During the season of Lent...

Lent is the Christian observance of the liturgical year from Ash Wednesday, February 18th this year,  to  Holy Week, marking the

Death and Resurrection of Jesus, which recalls the events of the Passion

of Christ on Good Friday, which then culminates in the celebration on Easter

Sunday of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. As a form of penitence many of the faithful commit to fasting or to giving up certain types of luxury during Lent.

Beyond fasting:10 tips for a more meaningful Lent

Lent is a time for self-reflection and deepening one’s relationship with God in Jesus Christ. For many this season leading up to Easter will be weeks of giving up something they enjoy as a sign of contrition for mistakes they have made. Others will spend extra time in devotions and prayer, while a few more will carry a cross or nail in their pocket as a reminder of the sacrifice Jesus made for them and the whole world. Consider adopting one or more of the following creative uses of the days between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday.

1. Apologize to someone2. Perform random acts of kindness3. Delve into a book of the Bible4. Serve people in need5. Visit the lonely6. Read Wesley’s sermons about the Sermon on the Mount7. Tell others you love them8. Throw a party for everyone9. Serve in worship10. Say “thank you”

Pray your calendar If you are concerned about having time, pray for it. Pray through what the day ahead will bring – your meetings, children’s events, doctor’s appointments, and the like. A few moments in prayer may be just the right medicine to still your spirit despite a hectic schedule. Spending extra time in Bible reading and prayer is a great way to observe Lent.

Make an appointment with God Set aside a specific time to pray. It may be first thing in the morning, in the evening, during your lunch break, your commute, or time spent waiting for the kids. Be creative. Then put the appointment in your calendar and keep it.
