Bites of Bread from Bob I’ve heard it so many times that I’m sick of hearing it. It seems like every newsletter I read says it. I hear it on the radio. I hear it from my friends. I hear it from my family. I hear it from complete strangers in the store. I’ve sworn I’m not going to say it or write it.

I am not going to say, “I can’t believe Christmas is here already.” I’m not going to say, “It seems like Christmas comes earlier every year.” I’m tired of hearing it. Oh, I feel that way...but I’m just tired of hearing it. It is over said. And not just this year, but every year. As long as I can remember, I have heard people say this. Logically, one would assume after a few years people would quit saying it, because people would adjust their expectations and realize that Christmas comes quickly every year.

My concern is not that Christmas seems to come earlier every year. My concern is that Christmas doesn’t last long enough. It seems you no more than get the boxes out of the attic marked “Christmas” and it is time to pack them all away again.

Another expression heard at this time of year in advertising is “the gift that keeps on giving.” I think those ads appeal to our desire to make Christmas last longer. If we are going to go to the trouble of getting a gift for someone, we want it to last longer than the pine needles on the tree.

That should be our concern as well. Our concern should be in making Christmas last longer and longer.

Our concern should be that that Christmas itself is the gift that keeps on giving. The gift of God, in Christ, doesn’t need to be stuffed away in the attic with all of the ornaments and lights.

What a shame to let the spirit of Love, Peace, Shar-ing, of closeness of family and friends—all those things we associate with Christmas—what a shame to have those only during the Christmas season.

God Bless, Pastor Bob

Sunday Sermons Pastor Bob Hanna

December 8– (Second Sunday of Advent) Matthew 3:1 - 12, “On the Road to Bethlehem: Prepare for Him.” If you read the Gospel stories of the beginning of Jesus’ life, you can not help but run into John the Baptist. He may seem a little embar-rassing and out-of-date, but his message of repen-tance is essential for the reception of Jesus.

December 15– (Third Sunday of Advent) At 8:30 am and 9:30 am services: Luke 2: 21 - 40, “On the Road to Bethlehem: Wait for Him.” Two seldom-mentioned characters in the birth story of Jesus are Simeon and Anna. They teach us important lessons about waiting for God.

At the 11:00 am service, the children are presenting a musical called, “Aloha Christmas.”

Children and Youth A Little Light from Laurie The Advent Experience Faire is a fun annual family event at our church that helps children and their fami-lies experience Advent through crafts, music, and sto-ries. We strive to make this a meaningful time for families to slow down and enjoy a special time with each other. The crafts are thoughtfully planned to en-hance the idea of giving to others from our hearts. The story is carefully selected to help children have a better understanding of what Advent is about.

Sunday, at our Advent Experience Faire, the children helped Betty tell the story; then they made a special wreath and took home a bag of Advent candles to be placed on the wreath and lit (or turned on) each week before Christmas. They each made a gift jar contain-ing an M&M friendship brownie mix to be given away. (One was even given to me!) They also were given an Advent paper chain to help count the days until the birth of Jesus. After they put the paper chain together, each day they can pull off a ring of paper and follow the printed suggestion for that day. Many of our children also made Christmas cards and prac-ticed with Christine, Judy or Ms. Kim for the Christ-mas play, “Aloha Christmas,” to be presented during the 11:00 am service on December 15.

The Advent Experience Faire is a time well spent with the children. Thank you to all who donated M&M’s for the gift jars; to Nancy, Dena, Dennis, Betty, Kim Resch, Kim Otis, Jessica Snyder and clan, CJ, Joe and Daniel Dyer, Maddy K. for your dedica-tion; and to the parents and grandparents who came and helped. It was a good day!

The more time we can take to slow down and think about that special gift God brought us, the less time we spend on the stress the world brings us.

Don’t forget to come to the 11:00 am service on December 15 to be blessed by our children.

Grateful hugs, Laurie

Ramblings from Riane Thank you to all the youth who participated in the nativity scene for the Advent Walk! We had a great turnout and lots of fun reenacting the night Jesus was born. Luckily it was not as cold as in years past, but it sure was windy!

Middle school youth who are interested in attending the lock-in at Silverton First Christian Church Satur-day, December 7, will be meeting at the church at 3:15 pm. If you live closer to Silverton and would prefer to meet at the Silverton First Christian Church, we will meet you there at 4:00 pm. Laurie Dyer will be driving the youth to the church on Saturday and I will bring the youth back to the church Sunday morn-ing in time for the 9:30 am service. Please bring forms, $10 for registration, and overnight supplies for the lock-in.

Sunday, December 8, is the first Sunday we will have youth group during the new time from 12:00-1:30 pm. Julie Towery will be providing lunch. There was an email sent out to the parents of the youth with important information regarding upcom-ing events. This information can also be found on the youth bulletin board near the bathrooms on the main floor as well as on the calendar posted in the youth room.

Since the time of youth group has been changed to right after church, we are looking for people to pro-vide lunch for the youth. If you are interested in do-ing so, there is a sign-up sheet at the information booth in the narthex. There is also a sign-up sheet there if you are interested in being a youth sponsor. The youth would love to mingle with other members of our congregation!

Let the Christmas Season begin!

Christmas Offering Supports Region The Oregon Region receives your gifts throughout the year through your contributions to the Disciples Mission Fund (DMF). Over 60% of the funds received in Oregon to DMF are returned to Oregon for ministries here.

Once a year, the Christian Church in Oregon receives an offering that goes exclusively to its ministries in Oregon. We hope you will participate in this offering to extend the witness of your regional church.

Some of the programs and services the Christmas offering supports: • Summer Camps • Women’s Ministries • Mission Partnerships • New Church Ministries • Training New Ministers • Services to Congregations • Regional Assemblies

We Need Books! Books, games, puzzles, videos, CDs, DVDs, tapes, and office supplies are needed for the Christian Women’s Fellowship (CWF) Book Sale in February. Proceeds go to CWF mission projects.

Bring your donations to the Fellowship Hall now! No encyclopedias, please.

If you have questions, contact: Penny Blackwell, 503-399-0371 or Joyce Zook, 503-385-1607.
