THE HOLY SEASON OF ADVENT
THIS YEAR, ADVENT BEGAN ON NOV. 27 AND RUNS THROUGH DEC. 24
The Christian calendar begins with the holy season of Advent. Advent begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas and runs through Christmas Eve. Advent means “coming.” It is a time when we prepare ourselves for the coming of the Messiah. Through the centuries, Christians have observed the season of Advent as a time to wait, reflect, anticipate, and prepare for the coming of the Messiah’s birth at Christmas, and for the second coming of the Messiah in glory.
When Christmas arrives, we will celebrate the gift of God’s Son who has come, is coming now, and will come again. We will celebrate the incarnation -- God entering history as one of us – and we will anticipate the day when every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. When Mary was great with child, there was no room in the inn, so Jesus would be born amidst the animals in a lowly stable. The season of Advent makes Innkeepers of us all, asking each one of us to make room for the coming of Christ the King into our hearts and into our lives.

November 27th was the first Sunday of Advent, the first day of a new Christian year, and we began our Advent celebration with the Hanging of the Greens. In this celebration, we share with our forbearers the anticipation of Christ’s coming birth and his future coming in glory, as we adorn our sanctuary with the symbols of hope, peace, joy, love, light, and life. We adorn our sanctuary in this way, so that our children and non-believers will ask: “What do these things mean?” and we will answer: “God is with us; Jesus the Messiah is born, and Jesus the Messiah will come again in glory.” Let us prepare for his coming. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace and goodwill to all humankind.
The Advent wreath is an integral part of our Advent celebration. The candles of the Advent wreath are arranged in a circle, because a circle has no beginning and no ending; the circle reminds us of God’s endless power and love. The different colors of the candles are also symbolic. The color purple symbolizes royalty; the three purple candles symbolize the coming of Christ from the royal line of David. Christ comes as the King of kings, the Lord of lords, as well as, the Prince of Peace. The pink or rose colored candle symbolizes joy; we will light it on the third Sunday of Advent, as we proclaim joy to the world. The large white candle in the center is known as the Christ candle; white symbolizes purity and perfection, and the large Christ candle points us to Jesus Christ as “the Light of the World.”
Each of the four Sundays in Advent, we light a new candle, and each candle symbolizes a
different aspect of our Advent experience. On Sunday, November 27th, we lit the candle of
hope; Sunday, December 4th, we will light the candle of peace; Sunday, December 11th, the
candle of joy; Sunday, December 18th, the candle of love. Hope. Peace. Joy. and Love. The end
of the Advent season comes when we light the Christ candle on Christmas Eve, as we join with
Christians all around the world, rejoicing that God’s promise of a Savior, God’s promise of a
Messiah who will usher in God’s Reign on earth, has been fulfilled! We rejoice that the Light
of Christ shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it!
