ST. MARY’S CHURCH, ONEONTA

San Lucas Toliman Scholarship News… Dear sponsors and friends, In the first set of exams this year, twenty seven of your sponsored students came top of their class. We had a total of two hundred and sixty-seven students on their school honor lists. So good to see kids with far fewer resources than many in their class, taking advantage of the help you give them...

Easter week as always was a week off for the schools. Banks and business closed from Thursday onward. The making of the traditional "carpets" on the streets

involved people from all walks of life. Beautiful carpets are made, then destroyed as the procession passes over them. The villages also had their own processions. Pictures on the website... On Monday I start visiting sixth grade classrooms in the local Primary Schools. I will be looking at the students' marks and interviewing those who have done well. It's always fun to see the different teaching styles and the different atmosphere in the various schools. The hard part is I have to make decisions as to whom we will offer sponsorship for 2019. Young, eager students, some shy, some intent on telling me how much they need a scholarship, others wistfully hoping ... Many thanks to donors who have given us money for "incentives". Major donations have allowed us to help schools with computer tablets for classroom use, a couple of new computers for some schools. and event sponsorship. Because of a major donation, we are able to help sponsor such activities as Math Olympics, Spelling Bees or art festivals in or between schools. Attached photos of Easter celebrations, and inter school sports. Thank you all again, all best wishes, Dennis

Opportunities to Serve

Peace and Justice Committee

Peace and Justice Ministries includes two subgroups:

Hands Working for Christ and Action for Justice. Action

for Justice focuses on advocacy and collaboration to im-

prove structures and bring about social change. Hands

Working for Christ provides more direct service to individ-

uals and families in the attempt to meet basic needs. Both

Hands Working for Christ and Action for Justice focus on

local, national, and international needs. Parishioners are

invited to be part of one or both groups.

Liturgical Ministries Volunteers for the liturgical ministries of Reader, Eucharis-

tic Minister, Musician (Choir, cantor or instrumentalist),

Greeter, Server and Usher are open to all parishioners.

Preparation is provided.

Catechist

A catechist shares his/her faith in the Risen Lord and his/

her love for the Church by assisting parents in the faith for-

mation of our parish children and youth. Training for this

ministry is available in the parish at the Basic, Intermediate

and Advanced levels.

Lazarus Ministry The Lazarus Ministry will offer those who mourn the gift of

Presence and Time at all funeral liturgies. They provide

support through communal prayers and song of the Eucha-

rist; along with the priest, they represent the whole parish at

the death of one of our own. During the liturgy, they minis-

ter by receiving the body of our deceased, and welcoming

the family, as well as serving in the liturgical ministries of

reader, Eucharistic Minister and Acolyte.

Pastoral Care Visitors Volunteers connect the parish with the homebound and

those in healthcare facilities by visiting and bringing Holy

Communion to them. We offer preparation for those who

are interested in this ministry. For more information, con-

tact the parish office at 432-3920 .

Food Pantry Volunteers Volunteers assist people who come to the Food Pantry as

well as helping with the Regional Food Bank and Wal-Mart

food distributions.

Newman Community The Newman Community, located at 77 Spruce Street, in-

vites the student communities of Hartwick and SUNY One-

onta to participate in the life of the Church through spiritu-

al, social and service activities, as well as being involved in

Saint Mary’s Parish life.

Winter by Karl Ove Knausgaard

This Norwegian is waiting for the birth of

his daughter. While waiting for her arrival,

Knausgaard takes stock of the world, see-

ing it as if for the first time. He writes

about the moon, water, messiness, owls,

birthdays, snowdrifts and windows – to

name just a handful of his ordinary subjects

filled with…what might you see and think

of?

Every Noted Played by Lisa Genova

A powerful exploration of regret, for-

giveness, and the search for redemption as

you follow an accomplished pianist, Rich-

ard descend into the paralysis of ALS (Lou

Gehrig’s disease). A detailed expose of

what it is like to experience a debilitating

disease, caregiving, divorce, and the search

for wholeness.

The Prague Sonata by Bradford Morrow

Music and war are the twin motifs of this

novel which follows a young musicologist,

Meta Taverner in search of the parts of a

piano sonata separated due to World War

II. Is it a lost unknown masterpiece? Who

is the composer? A good summer read.

What are you reading? A couple of suggestions from the pastor…

Great Works: Encounters with Art by Michael Glover

Michael Glover is an art critic and writer who

contributes regularly to The Independent and

The Economist. He presents fifty works of art

in full colour, each accompanied by a short

essay of his unexpected and novel insights;

conjuring up surprising and delightful connec-

tions. This book of art requires no prior

knowledge of the subject matter; just a mind

open to look and see in different ways.

The Peace and Justice ministry would like to thank every-

one who helped make our Rummage Sale a success. We are

so appreciative for those who gave items for the sale, deli-

cious baked goods. A special thank you to those who do-

nated their time volunteering. May all of you be blessed.

SAVE Saturday, 22 September 2018

On that day at the Shrine of the North American Mar‐tyrs at Auriesville, New York just outside of Amster‐dam, Bishop Sharfenberger is gathering our diocese for a Eucharistic Congress. What is a Eucharistic Con‐gress? In our Catholic tradition, a Eucharistic Con‐gress is a gathering of the Catholic people to bear wit‐ness to the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. Congresses bring together people from a wide area, and typically involve large openair Masses, Eucharistic ad‐oration (Blessed Sacrament), and other devotional cere‐monies held over several days. Congresses may both refer to National (varies by country) and International Eucharistic Congresses. 2020 will see an International Congress in Budapest, Hungary.Let us gather to give public testimony to our Catholic Christian Faith in the presence of Christ in the Holy Eucharist and among his people.
