Thoughts… Rev. Mike Hunter Senior Minister

I'm Not Waiting John 3:1-11

This Week’s Sermon

Only a handful of you have met our two daughters or their families. Other than the very beginning of my ministry out of college, this is the first call that has been without our kids. Both girls literally grew up on the campus of the churches we served. I’m glad to say both are very connected still to

local congregations. Cameron and her family are still in Lufkin where she teaches. We attended granddaughter Cadence’s dedication on Mother’s Day. Micah and her family have been in seminary the past three years, and in February gave us a grandson, Oden. But this week isn’t about daughters. It’s not even about grandchildren. This Saturday is Micah’s ordination. We’ve known since Micah’s eighth grade year that she has expressed a call to ministry. As a father, and someone who served the church, I must confess my initial response to that call back then was more protective than supportive. I wasn’t sure I wanted for my daughter what I knew was called of me. Over the past few years, more than once, I’ve confessed that I let my parenting get in the way of God’s call for her. On Saturday at East Dallas Christian Church I will confess my shortcomings one more time. I will watch elders and clergy gather around her, lay hands upon her and complete her ordination. Sometimes all this call language makes folks nervous. It shouldn’t. I don’t have to spend very much time with folks before I can usually discern their calling. Good teachers don’t teach for any other reason. It’s not the hours or the pay…it’s all about the call. Good elders don’t volunteer for the gig…in fact Godly elders often humbly accept the office, even though others have seen God’s hand on them for a long time. We all know a call when we see it…hear it…or feel it. Called folks are what make a difference in this world, clergy or otherwise.

This week, Marlene is away on a girls trip...

Which means, this week, I am a single parent...

Which means, this week, I come face to face with my weaknesses.

In the normal rhythm of life, everyone has moments of strength and moments of weakness. It is part of the human condition. When you have a two year-old, these moments tend to fluctuate far more than you'd hope or imagine. This is why it is so good to have a partner. When one is weak, the other can be strong and visa versa.

Yet, when we are alone, we have to confront these impulses. We face the reality of ourselves in weakness. It isn't always pretty. And while it is occasionally good to look in the mirror and seek to grow as a person, life wasn't meant to be lived alone. We need each other. We need friends. We need help. And we need mirrors.

Anne Lamont says the most powerful words in the English language are "Me Too".

Just having someone who understands is a tremendous gift. Having someone willing to walk beside you and partner with you is even better.

There's a famous poem call "Footprints in the Sand" that talks about Jesus carrying us when we feel alone. I think this poem has it all wrong. While that might make sense spiritually, the reality is that Jesus uses others to carry us. We need people who can be strong when we are weak...who can believe when we are unable...who can help carry the heavy burdens that life often brings our way.

Folk-rock band Mumford & Sons says it this way: "You are not alone in this. As brothers, we will stand, and we'll hold your hand..."

Perhaps wise Solomon said it best:

Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If they fall down, they can help each other up. But pity those who fall and have no one to help them up! Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. - Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

Who is helping carrying you? Who are you helping to carry?
