If you entertain for a moment, in your thought, that there is good and evil, it must follow that you fear the evil. Whether that evil is in the form of sin or sickness or lack or war or depression, you must fear it, if you believe there is such a thing; but what happens, when you realize that the Christ ministry promises that, “I am come that ye might have life, and that ye might have it more abundantly;” that, “I will never leave thee nor forsake thee”? What happens to your fear if you have consciously, remember that, consciously, consciously, accepted the fact that God is the only power, God is the only presence, God is infinite; what becomes of your fear, then? What becomes of your doubts? Since the entire race of Adam has its beginning in the belief in good and evil, you have come into this world, even before you could think or speak or hear, you came into this world convinced of good and evil; and that has been growing in you. The more you judge by appearances, the more you must agree that evil abounds much more than good, and that the evil -doer seems to get much more out of life than the good, if you judge by appearances. We must learn to awaken in the morning with the conscious remembrance that, “I will never leave you nor forsake you;” that, “I am come that you might have life, and that you might have it more abundantly.” You must, while making your physical preparations in the morning, remember, “'He performeth that which is given me to do, today;' … 'He perfecteth that which concerneth me.' I do not walk out into this world alone. I am not facing this world with merely my wisdom, my strength, my health. … 'He that is within me is greater than he that is in the world;' … 'God's grace is my sufficiency;' … I need not fear what mortal man can do to me; I need not fear what human circumstance or condition can do to me. 'I and my Father are one;' …'the kingdom of God is within me;' … whom shall I fear? … What shall I fear?” Isn't fear atheism? Isn't that fear a conviction that there is no God? Does one have a God and fear, too? Is it possible to have God, and fear? Fear is atheism; fear is the conviction that there is no God; [that] God is not power: chance, circumstance, luck: these are powers. Spiritual students can never be hypnotized if they abide, consciously, in the remembrance that, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” Every word of truth in my consciousness is bread, meat, wine, and water. Every word of truth in my consciousness is the Resurrection, the overcoming of the “years of the locusts.” “Fear not. JOHN STEPHENSON: THE 2011 ASILOMAR RETREAT "Feeling the Presence of God," Session 6:

This world is often called “the Adam dream;” it has been called that by metaphysicians; it has been termed that for generations and generations. What does that really mean? What is the “Adam dream?” Are we living in a dream? The Eastern traditions say that, “This world is maya, it's illusion; so nothing is real. So why contend with anything, why do anything? It's all just on this cycle of karma, why not just let everything be, and eventually, you'll work your way out of it.” I wouldn't create a world like that! We create our worlds; we each create our own world; but it is not a personal thing. We're not responsible for the world that we see; but we are responsible for how we see the world; if we see the world through spiritual discernment, or if we see the world through our developed material sense, our intellect, our feelings.

We feel so much, in this world. So much of our dealing with the world revolves around our feelings: what pushes our buttons, what makes us angry, what makes us happy; what is satisfying, what is frightening, and what brings joy. All of those feelings are inseparable from our existence, and we wouldn't want to live without feelings. We would be just an empty shell; but those feelings are not self-acting, and those feelings, when we are functioning through a spiritual awareness, are directed toward God; they are directed toward Truth.

Now, I mentioned yesterday, from … Yeats (sic), “Truth is beauty, and beauty is truth; and that's all you need to know.” That connotes feelings. What, really, is beauty? Isn't beauty a feeling? When you see something beautiful, you have a feeling about it. If you had no feeling, you could go through this world, and you could see the most beautiful sunsets, and you could see all kinds of beauty, and if you didn't have any feeling, it would mean nothing to you. You'd turn, and say, “Oh, that's nice,” and walk away. I think kids, with their texting, they're missing out on the beauty of the Truth, because when we experience the beauty of this world, we are experiencing a degree of Truth; and when we apply the healing principles to those feelings that we feel of beauty, we are reinforcing this spiritual nature in the deep sense of our soul and our heart, where we feel.

The presence of God is a feeling; we're aware of it. It's a sense: spiritual sense. This sensory part of us, which is seldom ever used – and it can't be measured. So the scientists, really, have not started probing around. Spiritual sense is a sense. Our soul, which is God incarnate – the soul of man is God – what are our soul-faculties? What do we experience through the soul? We experience joy, we experience peace, we experience a oneness. All of those are feelings. The experiences that we have, how we relate, is a feeling; it is not intellectual. When we start judging a feeling with our mind, when we start putting our concepts onto a feeling, we take those feelings out of the Spirit, and we put them into “this world;” we put them into the dream. In the dream, the Adam dream, we still have all these feelings; but they shift, they change from being this experience of the Divine, of heaven on earth, into this realm of conflicting forces, where we have opposites; and then, we become fearful. If we are feeling good, there's something in the back of our mind that, “This isn't going to last, and we're going to feel bad.” If we are in a joyous relationship – I know people who will never say how happy they are, because they are afraid that the moment they say they are happy, it will go away! Now, isn't that ridiculous? That's superstition; it's not very far below the surface of us. When we see all of this world as a dream, as hypnotism, we can put into context how to deal with this world. Now, in dealing with the dream, we wake up. Dreams – some of them are good, and some are not. … What kind of reality does the dream have? A dream can have reality if you start taking action on what came to you in a dream, and you can make it relevant in your experience. Most of the time, they're just little snippets of whatever is going on in consciousness. … Joel, in [“What Did Hinder You?”] … is talking about hypnotism, which is what a dream-state is, in a way, because “this world,” if it is the dream, Joel terms it “hypnotism.” For Study: THE ART OF SPIRITUAL HEALING, Chapters 5 and 14.

Remember that Jesus didn't give the Sermon On the Mount to the multitudes, he gave it to his close followers; and it says, “And seeing the multitudes, he went up to the mountain, and when he was seated, his Disciples came unto him, and he opened his mouth and taught them. 'Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.'” We could almost say, “Blessed are those that are poor in the spirit of this world. They don't enter into the games of this world, for “theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” I know that many of you have had days of mourning over conditions of the world, but “the Comforter,” the Christ, comes to us in that state. “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” The meek are the humble; those who are listening. I guess that the biggest attribute of a meek person is someone that listens; they listen to others. They're not anxious always to impose their thoughts and their opinions on others. A meek person listens, and that listening is an act of love. The result of that act of love is that they “inherit the earth.” Everything comes to those who listen, because if you listen inwardly, you gain understanding. If you listen outwardly, to the outer, you gain understanding of that point of view. So, in your listening, what do you gain? Understanding; and what is required of us is an understanding heart, isn't it? Because we live between two worlds, we're acting as that mediation of the Christ. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled.” That needs no explanation, does it? That means hungering and thirsting after the right understanding, the righteousness that exceeds the Scribes and the Pharisees. There is a higher righteousness, righteous judgment. It's to be able to see this invisible Reality that is operating, and how we can cooperate with it. “Blessed are the merciful,” the loving, “they shall obtain (love) mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” The pure in heart are those who are always turning within, they're always asking, “What would you have me do, Father? You lead the way. This is your life. You reveal your Self.” That's the pure in heart, and I can tell you, that does lead to seeing God, because in my God-experience, that was the one thing that came to me, there was only one thrust in my life, was to understand and know the way of the Lord, to do His will. And that's the pure in heart; and you do see God. “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called 'the sons of God.'” And all of you are peacemakers, if you will listen, if you will not react to the outer world, whether it is good or bad. If you'll just be “hid with Christ in God,” that peace will flow from you at all times. As you go along and meditate, and feel that unspeakable peace, that will become the most important activity in your life, maintaining that presence of peace, because that is maintaining your relationship of oneness with God. “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness's sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Believe me, people do not like this lesson that we've had this morning. It's not a popular lesson, and lots of people run from it. “Blessed are you when they revile you, and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you, falsely, for my sake.” And I have had lots of that said. “Rejoice, and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven … . You are the salt of the earth. If the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.” Now, salt was used in the Middle East, at that time, as coins; and the word “salary,” “solarius,” comes from the root of “salt.” The way they collected their tax money, someone had a salt pellet, like that, and when they came to the border, they dipped the coin of salt into water, and it lost some of the salt. [The salt] went out of it, and it became smaller. This is what he's referring to, because you know, salt, if it is left [alone] becomes more briney, it never loses its flavor. So this is what Jesus is referring to, that “you are the salt of the earth,” you are the valuable asset to the earth, but if you allow this to be drained from you, these commandments, or this [spiritual] way of life to be drained from you, you will lose everything, because this gives you your purity and strength; and salt, also, is a purifying agency. “You are the light of the world, a city that is set on a hill, which cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lamp stand, that it gives light to all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men that they see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

It isn't such a difficult thing to be on the Middle Path, if you have the help of the word “is,” because always, if you are tempted to do something to improve the scene, you can come back: “Now wait a minute. Wait a minute! It already is. IS is the only truth.” Is …IS! Hold to that IS. Then you'll lose the temptation to make it become so. Do you see that?

In the mental science days, it was taught that “being is becoming.” Being can't be becoming: Being IS! IS! IS! It may be coming to our awareness, just as the child, the youngster, each day learns something about this world, and to its sense it is as it were becoming so, to our sense, no, it has always been that way. That child is merely becoming aware of that which is. So we, spiritually, may be learning new truths each day, or thinking we are, but actually we aren't. We are becoming aware of that which IS.

So, healing work, really, is constituted of the recognition of the Christhood of individual being, which already IS. Well, you certainly don't need any “God” to make it so. You don't need any God power to make it so. All you need is your own vision to behold Christhood. Never attempt to make it so. Never attempt to bring it about, either by healing or reforming. Never! Stand fast in the Middle Path of the realization of Christhood, and let the good human and the bad human be what they are at any given moment; let the sick human and the well human be what they are at any given moment. Don't feel elated about 98.6 temperature, because it can change, down or up, at any given moment. We have no “temperature,” we have only Christhood. Don't be elated about the luck going down, and don't be alarmed about the luck going up. You have nothing to do with luck, you have to do with Christhood. Your vision is not the changing of physical conditions, your vision is a vision of eternal, infinite Christhood. “I am with you. Before Abraham, I am with you; I am with you until the end of the world.” This Christhood is a permanent identity. It is not one that someone can heal us of or make us into. Not even Jesus Christ coming to earth could “make” Christhood. Christhood was the established Being. He revealed it to the ignorant thought, just as Mrs. Eddy revealed it, and Mrs. Fillmore revealed it, and we are revealing: Christhood. The only thing is, at this particular stage, our Work is going a step beyond those, in the fact that we are not concerned with mental causes for physical disease, we're not even concerned with moral causes for physical disease. We are not interested in changing humanhood. We have now come to the point of the Master's revelation where he said, “My kingdom is not of this world. … Who made me a judge over you? … Who made me a divider?”

There's a secret about forgiveness: there isn't anything or anybody that can forgive us. Therefore, there isn't any possibility of ever being forgiven, except under one condition, and that is when there is no possibility of the offense being repeated. In other words, no matter what it is we have ever done, as long as there is the potentiality in us of it being repeated, we are not forgiven. Think that over a minute, because this is very, very deep, but it is very, very true. The idea is this: just let us suppose, for a moment, that I am God, and that you come to me, and you have confessed your fault, and you want forgiveness; and I say, “What? Forgiveness to do it over again?”

“Oh, no, it will never happen again! Oh, it couldn't happen again. I've realized the wrongness of it. I've realized the nature of it. It just couldn't happen again.”

You actually believe it. But don't forget this: I, being God, I don't. I see right through to the center of your heart, and I know that the same thing that made you do it once could make you do it again, if the same circumstances arose. And so, in my omniscience, I say, “Uh-uh. It's still there. It's still a block within you, and you are still under the penalty of it until you are completely purged of it.” So you go your way, and you ponder it, you meditate, you think; you see it upside down, from every angle, and all of a sudden, you do catch a clear picture of, not merely the wrongness of it, but the fact that only the state of consciousness that made you do it in the first place could make you do it in a second, and that state of consciousness doesn't exist anymore; that man died, daily, until it was thoroughly dead; and now you have been reborn of the Spirit. Then, you come back to God and say, “Forgive me,” and I say, being God, “I don't even know who you are anymore. I don't see anything wrong in you to forgive!”

Now, we have the idea of forgiveness. There really isn't any “God” to forgive. When the state of consciousness has died that could be guilty of resentment, anger, jealousy, malice, whatever it may have been, there not only is nothing to forgive, and nobody to forgive, there isn't even a remembrance, or a memory, or a sight, or even a “smell of smoke.”

There is, then, no such thing as one forgiving another, or God forgiving us: there is only a dying daily to the state of consciousness that accepted good and evil and acted upon it. When that is thoroughly dead, so that we have come to a place of self-completeness in God, where I know that ,“'I and my Father are one.' … 'All that the Father hath is mine.' … I am a child of God. I am an 'heir of God, joint heir, with Christ, in God,' now I can look out on you, and on all this world, and there isn't a thing that you have that I want. There isn't a sin you could commit that I hold you in condemnation for, or criticism for, or judgment for, knowing full well that the state of consciousness that did it isn't really you, it's an imposed one; and when I am fully and completely aware that “I and my Father are one,” and I no longer have a desire for person, place, thing, circumstance, or condition, I am “reborn of the Spirit,” and have carried with me none of the sin, none of the state of consciousness that could result in sin, none of the desires that could result in sin. Now I am purged. It didn't take a “God” to do it, to forgive me, it took a dying and a rebirth; and in this new state of consciousness, I need no forgiving, because there is no sin.

For Meditation: “Take every single phase of error that is presented to you, and lump it; lump them all together, and call them 'carnal mind,' if you want. Call them 'mortal mind;' call them 'hypnotism;' but then turn around and say, 'Yes, but you are the “arm of flesh .” Out with you!' Then, if you'd like, go out to a movie, or turn on your television for an hour, just to prove that you are not afraid of the Devil. But don't sit around there, watching, because that will indicate that you are afraid of – if you are orthodox, it will be 'the Devil,' if you're metaphysical, it will be 'mortal mind.' Don't do that! There is a healing principle. … The healing principle is this: God is one, and God is the very I of my being, 'closer to me than breathing, and nearer than hands and feet.'” – Joel, From the Recording

You see, you have to keep going back, over and over, to remind yourself, even if very briefly, every time there is an appearance, a temptation, that there is only one Power, there is only one Presence, and all the wisdom, all the knowledge is God; and therefore, it's all you, it's all within you. “That which I am seeking I AM; I already AM.” That's what we have to become aware of. You're seeking some truth? “But I AM the truth!” You have to have an awareness of that; and you can't get it in any way except in prayer, in meditation, in that silence. That's why it is a life by prayer; it's a Way of life. Our praying is a continual abiding in this truth, so that we don't get away from it long enough to let any temptation in. There isn't anything to heal, and if you think there is, then you are looking at it from human consciousness. You're judging by appearances if you think you have some thing that needs to be healed. You don't have such a thing. You have an absence of conviction that God is all there is. So that's what you have to work with, is to attain that conviction, a deeper conviction, not try to get rid of a lump or a fever. Work on your consciousness. Let it deepen. Get that total realization that God is all there is to you, and God doesn't have any lump or any fever; therefore, neither do you! All we have is what God has, and nothing else. “God made all that was made, and all that He made is good.” And there is nothing else outside of everything, that's all there is. So, it takes work, because we have all these centuries of conditioning behind us, saying that there are a million powers out here, a million things can go wrong with you; but they're all built on this false belief that you're the body, and you're not the body! So it doesn't matter all these beliefs they're saying about your body; it's all built on sand, on nothing.

All of human belief about you and your body is all based upon that belief in two powers, and there aren't two powers. So you just pay no attention to it. It isn't talking about you, it is a dream somebody had, and everybody bought it; but we don't have to. We have to turn around and judge not by the appearances. It has nothing to do with us; it's an illusory sense of body and world, and we have to see beyond that horizon, not look at this world out of that belief in two powers.

There's good, there can be good, in the human [picture], of course! But it's not permanent, and it's not permanent because it has two sides to it. It's made up of good and evil. It's a belief. It's a coin with two sides, and if you get the coin, you've got both sides of it. Even if you want to carry it around with the good side up, it's going to turn over; you have the other one there, too. You can't have just human good, because human belief is always pairs of opposites, and even if the evil isn't showing, at the moment, it will before long, because you have it. So we have to go beyond that. We have to go beyond that human level, and we have to do it every time we are faced with a temptation. Sometimes they're tougher than others; but whether it takes a split second or a couple of hours, you have to tell it to get behind you. You pay no attention to it; and when you can get to that point of no reaction, whatever, to it, it's not there; there's nothing there.
