Health and Wellness Day and Graduation • May 19, 2016On May 19th, the 2016 L.E.A.D. Class spent their final day on health and wellness. They took the opportunity to tour the developing Sarah Cannon Cancer Institute at HCA Midwest Health, the City of Independence’s Sermon Center and enjoyed lunch and a presentation on healthy eating habits at Terra Health & Wellness Market. The group ended their day at Main Event Entertainment with a “Clean Eating” presentation by Jillian Miranda, RD, LD, and last but not least, their graduation ceremony.

While every L.E.A.D. Independence class is unique, this one was especially memorable. In the 9 months of this 20-person class, 5 found new jobs, 3 moved out of Independence, 2 had babies, 2 sold their houses and one completed her doctoral degree (congratulations to Dr. Lynette Wheeler). So, out of 20 people, 10 had life changing events happen in the last 9 months!! That is just a little bit amazing. Congratulations to all 17 L.E.A.D. graduates and good luck!

L.E.A.D. 2016 Class except those in Europe or having a baby.

Sign Up Now for the 2016 - 2017 LEAD Independence Class Our 2016 L.E.A.D. Independence Class graduated on Friday, May 19 with a fun lunch and ceremony at Main Event Entertainment. That brings the total to 589 people that have graduated from L.E.A.D. Independence.

The class members loved the networking within the class, with the speakers, and with the facilitators. The L.E.A.D. Class meets one day a month each month from September to May. It is a leadership, education, and development class. Bankers, assistant branch managers, CEOs of companies, insurance agents, Fire Chiefs, police detectives, lawyers, librarians, principals of schools, and office managers have all been through the class along with hundreds of others who wanted to know more about Independence.

Legislative Briefing Recap

Legislative Hearings

We had 6 State Representatives join us last month to recap the 2016 Legislative Session. Among those were Ira Anders, Mike Cierpiot,Billy Kidd, Jeanie Lauer, John Rizzo, and Rory Rowland.

Members desiring to address the Public Policy Committee during one of the scheduled public hearings are asked to contact Lois McDonald at [email protected] or 816-252-4745 (ext. 2) to secure a time slot on the agenda.

The input received from the public hearings forms the basis for the items or issues considered by the Chamber for inclusion in the Chamber’s 2017 Legislative Agenda. Items identified through this process will be explored, debated, and prioritized by the members of the Public Policy Committee during the early fall and forwarded to the Chamber Board of Directors for final consideration in November. The approved 2017 Legislative Agenda will be published and distributed to all members of the Chamber.

The Public Policy Committee has again set dates to receive recommendations for needed legislation or legislative changes from our membership and strategic partners. Testimony is being sought on issues that will or should be considered by the legislative bodies of the City of Independence, Jackson County, the Missouri General Assembly, and the United States Congress.

Legislative Hearing Dates have been set for July 18th and July 25th

Each scheduled hearing will last from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm and be held in the Chamber Boardroom. Presentations will be scheduled in 15-minute intervals beginning at 4:00 pm.

REMINDER: Legislative Hearings July 18 • July 25

LEADERSHIP QUOTE OF THE MONTH

“The only safe ship in a storm is leadership.” Faye Wattleton

$25 Invoice from MetroMedia Dear Chamber Member,

You may have received what looks like a $25 invoice from MetroMedia referencing the Independence Chamber. Please note you are not obligated to pay this invoice. This is an opportunity for you to purchase a digital version the 2016 Independence Chamber Business Directory and have it accessible on your phone as an app.

The letter notes this as a “Hyperlink Activation.” This is in reference to the app mentioned above. Your business is already listed on the Independence Chamber of Commerce’s website for free - once you join the Chamber, you are automatically placed on the online Business Directory and have the ability to get the directory on your phone via the MemberPlus app. We apologize for the way this is being handled. We did give MetroMedia permission to offer the app to our members if they would like to purchase it for $25. It is not required and the Chamber is not okay with it being offered to you disguised as an invoice. Please don’t pay, unless you want this app.

We truly apologize for the confusion. If you have paid the $25 and do not want the app, please send us a note and we will work with MetroMedia to collect the $25 back for you.

Thank you,The Independence Chamber of Commerce Staff
