The Challenger Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I cannot begin to express

my thankfulness for all God has done in and through this church and my hopefulness for all I believe God will do in the decades to come. We stand poised to kick off our Capital Campaign to Re-new, Restore, and Reach Out. Our journey is spiritual and practi-cal, reflecting our Wesleyan heritage. As we examine our hearts and our faith commitments, we will also examine our financial commitments, knowing that the work of the church and use of the building requires our faithful financial support. You will be asked to prayerfully consider going the extra mile to offer a 3-year pledge to our capital campaign for the purpose of preserving and restoring our building for ministry for the next 50 years. We will consider how we reach out into our local community to be the hands and feet and witness of Christ in our world.

I’m truly excited to announce that we will have our FIRST Glyndon UMC homecoming and ministry celebration on Sunday, November 12, 2017! Please mark your calendars now and plan on spending the day celebrating our church and its ministries and joining in fellowship and fun with your church family! Our minis-try celebration will be held in Dew Hall from 9:30 – 11. Come for brunch bites and learn about all the ministry efforts of our church community. We’ll have a wonderful Homecoming worship from 11 – 12:15ish with all of our choirs, some memories from history, and an inspiring word from one of your previous pastors! Then our Homecoming and Ministry Celebration Team will host an amazing fellowship lunch and afternoon fun and fellowship for people of all ages!

We’ll wrap up our stewardship journey with our Commit-ment Sunday on November 19th as we reflect on the ways we and our building have been revived by faith. Please begin to prayer-fully consider all God has done for you, how Glyndon UMC has nurtured your faith journey, and how God is calling you to finan-cially support its ministry in the coming years.

One last announcement: We have an extra special word planned for you on Laity Sunday, October 15th. You will hear some beautiful, creative reflections from a cross-section of our laity! They will offer poignant and powerful reflections on their roots in life and faith. I know you don’t want to miss it, so please join us for this special worship experience.

I give thanks for you, your faith, and your service! With grace, peace, and hope, Pastor Dawn

Coffee Hour Hosts

We love to gather on Sundays be-

tween services so people can stay

after the first service or come ear-

ly for the late service and still en-

joy fellowship together. Michelle

Stranger coordinates the hosts

who provide snacks and juices for

this activity, and she needs people

to sign up for a Sunday, so we

don’t lean on a small few to cover

so many weeks. Please consider

signing up for a week on the bul-

letin board in the lobby or contact

Michelle via email at

[email protected]. Thanks!

Feeling Left Out of Communications Since Internet Isn’t Your Thing?

We have so many activities going on and we want everyone to know about them so they don’t miss out. So if you want a hard copy of the monthly Challenger, they are at the back of church on shelf with Sunday bulle-tins, in an acrylic brochure stand & also on the Memorial Shelf in lobby by parking lot. We can also discuss the Friday News & Highlights weekly email and bulle-tin & insert if you can’t make it to church. Just contact Gayle in the church office (410-833-2033)

FIVE YEAR GOALS As a result of our July church leadership retreat, we decided that we want as the body of Christ to (1) develop a culture that welcomes, celebrates and supports those with special needs, (2) deepen engagement of our current congregants, and (3) welcome and integrate newcomers to the church. To that end, we are holding a focus group around each one of these topics. The purpose of the focus groups will be to set the actual goals for engaging each of these three groups and talk about how to get there. We are asking you, our church family, to consider whom you have a heart for engaging in the life of the church and attend one or more of these meet-ings. Please join us for one of the following focus group meetings: Develop a culture which welcomes, supports

and celebrates those with special needs: Thursday, October 5th at 7 pm Deepen engagement and connection within

our community: Tuesday, October 10th at 7 pm Welcome and integrate visitors Tuesday, November 14th at 7 pm

Monthly Poem Submission By Ron Fouse

Once upon a time, I wrote a story

It was all about our God’s Glory.

As I started to write ...I had to cease,

For all about me was quiet and peace.

It was then I found how tough it was,

To put into words, all about His Love.

For if you really know His peace.

You know your worries are going to cease.

Oh My, oh my, who’s writing this poem,

I don’t know and I don’t care.

It doesn’t matter, if HE is there.

How do you tell folks of His Love.

When they won’t listen, their brains in a glove.

Just live your life the way he taught,

Keeping him in every thought.

If you do this, I know your life

Will help others see His light.

There’s faith in money, cars and stuff,

But this really is just some fluff.

Th eonly place to put your Faith,

Is in His Holy caring face,

For after all is said and done,

We’re just waiting for Him to come.

For on that day, in the twinkling of an eye,

He’s taking us all up in the sky.

If they don’t buy it, it’s a real good bet,

That in the end, they shall really sweat.

The monthly Challenger newslet-ter is one of the best ways to keep up with all the upcoming activi-ties, changes in worship sched-

ules and getting details for upcoming small group studies and being the first to hear about the up-coming sermon series. So be sure to submit arti-cles are your group’s activities, and send some pictures of your team, too! Article submission deadline is the 15th of the prior month, so the deadline is October 15th for the November issue.

Join In the Fun!

Help us finish up our mission work at First Fruits Farm on Sat, October 21st.

From toddlers (with parental supervision) to senior citizens! Many volunteers are blessed by this rich experience in the fields knowing that the Lord’s bounty will be shared with our brothers and sisters in need. It is a wonderful opportunity for our youth to earn service hours, too, as we pick the crops as they ripen.

We will depart from the church parking lot at 8:00am and return between 1:00 and 1:30pm. Training will be provided and lunch, too, so sign up in the church lobby so Robin has a count for food! You can contact Robin Krell (Cell_443-871-6389 / Email: [email protected] for questions or to confirm that day if weather is questionable.

Cold weather is just around the corner!

Please consider donating new or gently used items for those in need: coats, jackets, sweatshirts, sweatpants as you begin to transition your closets for colder weather please consider donating new or gently used cold weather clothing items through November. They will be distributed to the homeless and people living in shelters such as The Baltimore Station, where 87% of residents are veterans. Your donations are greatly ap-preciated! You can drop them off in the church lobby inside the parking lot entrance, for us to box up for delivery. Share warms clothes to those in need, as well as God’s love to warm everyone’s souls.

FRIENDS HELPING FRIENDS ON WILKENS For the past two years about 10 church members have been providing a variety of casseroles, salads, and/or brownies for the residents near the very impoverished area at the corner of Monroe and Ramsey Street in Baltimore City. Homeless men, women and children, alcohol and drug addicted, sex trafficked, mentally ill, and hungry souls were fed weekly by Angels of Addiction. The mission group has closed and two of the previous members have begun a new ministry called “Friends on Wilkens” to continue serving those who need to experience the hands and feet of Christ in action. Robin Krell, Pastor Dawn, Karen Sakkof, and Bob & Kathy Rittler have served the donated food to 100 to 140 area residents. On the third Thursday of each month, we could use your help with donations of easily prepared casseroles, store bought cookies, salad mix and ranch dressing. You may also join us to actually serve the food from 9 to 11 pm in Baltimore, if you’d like to do so. Contact Kathy Rittler @ [email protected].

Carroll County Christian Men’s Annual Prayer Breakfast Join us for the 21st Annual Carroll County Christian Men’s Prayer Breakfast on Saturday, October 7 from 8:00-10:00am (doors open at 7:30am) at the Pleasant Valley Community Fire Hall, 2030 Pleasant Val-ley Road South in Westminster. The Keynote Speaker is Tom Joyce, who graduated from the U.S. Naval

Academy in Annapolis and had a very active, rewarding, and dangerous career as a fighter pilot and was even Commanding Officer on board the USS Kitty Hawk. Holiday / Worship Celebration

With the fall season here, many of our Sunday School programs are beginning again, and we take on the responsibility of raising our young people in the faith of Jesus Christ in his church. Confirmation is an im-portant sacramental step in the journey of any person who wishes to publicly profess faith in Jesus Christ, but it is especially important for our younger members. Studies have shown that what we believe about Jesus by the age of 13 remains largely what we believe as adults.

Our kick off meeting was Sunday, September 24 but if you couldn’t make that, you are still welcome to join us. We will be meeting at church on Sundays from 5pm-7pm and dinner is included. Listed below are the dates and locations.

• Sunday, October 22 (at GUMC from 5pm-7pm)

• Sunday, November 26 (at GUMC from 5pm-7pm)

• Sunday, December 10 (we will be attending a service at Lovely Lane church in the morning and take a tour—more details coming soon)

• Sunday, January 28 (at GUMC from 5p-7pm)

• Sunday, February 25 (at GUMC from 5pm-7pm)

• Sunday, March 25 (at GUMC from 5pm-7pm)

• Friday, April 20 to Sunday, April 22 (Retreat)

• Sunday, June 4 Confirmation in Church Sanctuary

Member Highlight—ruth mayr Ruth Mayr has been very active in the life of Glyndon Church since she joined our church family in the spring of 1969. Over the years, she has used her many talents to welcome, teach, organize, support, feed, and care for peo-ple, both near and far away. She is truly a Christian servant who works to bring the light of Christ to others. Two of Ruth's favorite things about Glyndon Church are the wide variety of programs that offer lots of things to do, and the Missions and Outreach activities that provide support to people in need all around the world. Most of all, she says, "I love the people here." Ruth taught Sunday School to 1st and 2nd graders for an astounding 37 years and was an active member of the United Methodist Women. She has long been a member of the Hospitality Committee and has coordinated funeral luncheons and receptions at our church since 1998. She has worked as a re-ceptionist with Mission of Mercy for 13 years.

Ruth sings in the Chancel Choir and participates regularly in bible studies. She is currently a member of the Capital Campaign Committee as well as the Congregational Care Team. In her own Card Ministry, she sends cheer and love through the mail to people in our church family during times of celebration. sorrow and struggle. She is part of the Community Bible Class Quilting Group and has made "Linus" quilts for young children, lap quilts for nursing home residents, quilts for hurricane victims, and dresses and shorts for children in areas of need around the world. Ruth is a moth-er of two and grandmother of three. She was an Elementary School teach-er and taught 1st and 3rd Grades in Fullerton and Owings Mills. After she retired from teaching, she worked at a dress shop in Towson for 17 years. She is a very talented seamstress. On several occasions, she made some beautiful American Girl® doll clothes that "brought a pretty penny" in support of the UMW's Silent Auction. The dolls that wore Ruth's crea-tions were certainly the best dressed dolls in town! Through her many ef-forts, Ruth Mayr has contributed immeasurably to the life of Glyndon Church, and touched the lives of several generations of Glyndon Church members as well as the lives of countless people all over the world. She has been, and continues to be, a humble servant and "the hands and feet of Christ" in the world.

Thank you, Ruth, for all you do! You are an example for us all to follow.

Family Fellowship is back on for our Second Sundays from 5:00pm – 7:00pm. Join us on October 8th for potluck and game

Do you ever wonder how the Prayer Team works at Glyndon UMC? Here’s some information that may help you learn about our prayer team and maybe you will feel called to join our team.

All information given as a Prayer Request is Confi-dential for use by Team Members and the Pastor on-ly.

1. Process: Prayer requests are given to PMT Coor-dinator, Joan Poling, by Pastor Dawn, a church member, or a Prayer Team member.

2. The Coordinator then updates the team members and the Pastor.

3. Any church member can be a Prayer Team mem-ber. There is just one phone call for each prayer reuest to a PMT Team member, who then shares it with their partner. They may then pray togeth-er, and also each will continue the prayer until notice of a resolution with that particular request.

4. We pray compassionately for each request given to us.

5. Intercessory prayer is a most valuable tool for effective prayer—and A GIFT for the one who is the subject of the prayer.

Prayer is a “sweet aroma” to God.

If interested in joining the prayer team, you can con-

tact Joan Poling ([email protected])

to meet our church members and staff, and learn more about Glyndon UMC.

We need 6-8 people to help out with food & games in Dew Hall We also need all the people available with cars to purchase candy and distribute from their

uniquely decorated trunks to our little friends. We also need people willing to donate individual bags of chips/cookies/goldfish etc. for food.

If you can volunteer your time and services, please sign up on the bulletin board in the lobby by parking lot entrance, or contact Terri ([email protected]).
