The Challenger Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I am so thankful and proud to be
your pastor. We have had some amazing things happening in the past month and so many awesome things to look forward to in the coming year. I want to take a few minutes to make sure you know about each of them!!!
First, our leadership team met and established four 5-year goals for our church. They are: 1) conduct a capital campaign to move us into the future, 2) welcome and integrate visitors, 3) deepen en-gagement and connection within our community, 4) develop a culture which welcomes, supports, and celebrates those with special needs. We’ll be forming focus groups for each of these (our capital campaign team is already up and running) soon and developing action plans and for achieving these goals!
Second, our Capital Campaign team has been working hard and is moving out to begin the Capital Campaign Feasibility Study with the help of our consultant John Hewett. We need your help with the study. You’ll be receiving a copy of our campaign vision and a survey soon! Please take time (at least 15 minutes) to prayerfully review the vision and respond to the survey! We know that your participation and support is vital for successfully moving forward and we want to hear what you are excited about and what makes Glyndon UMC a great church for you and your family!!
Third, we had a group of 13 people participate in Baltimore County Work Camp support. They were beautiful representatives for Christ! They cooked a fabulous meal for the opening night and have been asked to do it again next year! They built a new porch and did a major yard clean-up for two elderly folks in our county. Finally, they went above and beyond to do trash pick-up on the last (and hottest) day of camp from other sites. Their hard work won them the coveted “solid as a rock” award. Please check out the pictures of their efforts on the board in the lobby or on our website!
Finally, we had 70 children participate in VBS this year. I can-not adequately express how thankful I am for Terri, our VBS Director, for the 35 other volunteers who worked to teach and guide our chil-dren, and to all of you who purchased supplies and supported us in oth-er ways. The joy of seeing children learn that they are God’s superhe-roes, who have heart, courage, wisdom, hope and power to do good, seek peace and go after it filled my heart this week!!!
You are a vital part of all we do! Get involved. Offer your pray-ers, your presence, your gifts, your service, and your witness to Christ and then watch to see how God will do more than we can ask or even imagine!!!! With a heart full of joy, Pastor Dawn

Thanks to all our VBS Su-
per Heroes: the children who attended and the numerous vol-unteers who added their crea-
tivity, their energy, and their love of God into every interaction. We also send
thanks to all who donated snacks and supplies that made this week possible. We had over 70 children this year, and activities were going on in every area of the church. Sunday, July 30, was our big VBS Celebration Day and the faces on the children along with their stories about VBS week tells the story of a huge success! Terri and her team were truly dedicated to making this a safe environment and an enjoyable way of sharing God’s Word & Love with all our little VBS friends. And the message carried home with all the creations and stories shared. Please offer congratu-lations to all our heroes for sharing the message that Jesus is alive and active at Glyndon United Method-ist Church.

This Month’s Poem
By Ron Fouse
“DAWN”
There she was, standing there,
The look on her face was one of care,
It took me a while to talk to her.
She looked so serious in the chair.
Since we met, her being was pronounced,
Her devotion to him, was more than an ounce,
Her whole being was there for us,
Her caring, her manner was a total plus.
Each Sunday she preached from her lil pad
The pulpit sermon was not to be had.
She walks the aisle, keeping real close,
Her message is strong, she gives her most.
Have watched her walking among us,
Her caring shows, a real plus.
She does not dwell on a given point,
But moves along, showing her anoint.
How long, how long
can this poem go on,
It’s a lot like singing
a favorite song,
We’ll close for now
and only say,
Stay with us Dawn,
you make our day.
Church Office Coverage Just a note to let you know that our administrative assistant, Gayle, will be on vacation August 1 through August 9. The office will be closed on Fri-day August 4 as usual for the summer schedule, but Monday thru Thursday, the office is open from 8:45am to 1:15pm. Our wonderful team of office volunteers will be covering the office to address your needs and assist Pastor Dawn, but if coming in to the office, you may want to call ahead first to let them know you are coming in so you are assured of access. Bobby will also be around to assist!

Capital Campaign
Since being convened at the direction of the Church Council in March, and then meet-ing on eight separate occasions in April, May and June to identify and prioritize needs, draft a theme with supporting scripture, and interview three professional fundraising consultants, the Capital Campaign Planning Committee recently recommended the se-
lection of John Hewett of Hewett Consulting, LLC in Charlotte, NC to serve as counsel to and guide our cam-paign. Based on this recommendation, the Church Council voted unanimously on July 9 to engage Mr. Hewett. He will meet with the committee on Monday evening, July 24 to review the steps for an initial feasi-bility study to collect important information about GUMC, which will help us to plan and prepare for the campaign initiation later this summer. The official launch will be this fall and be tied to a church “homecoming,” which is tentatively scheduled for mid-November. This is a very exciting time for GUMC as we seek to “Restore, Renew, and Reach Out” and serve as beacons for Christ to those in our congregation, our area, and be-yond. Funds generated by the campaign will address pressing needs of repair and/or replacement of the slate roof on the main church building, installation of new carpet-ing in the sanctuary and hallways, and replacement of the concrete landing outside the lobby and the ramp and walkway down to the Community Bible Class building. Funds will also help us to enhance our facilities by adding a new audio system for the sanctuary and Dew Hall, which will be augmented by video capacity, upgrading our kitchen so that it passes the state certification needed to advertise to and serve members of the general public, and construct a pavilion and install new play-ground equipment in the rear portion of our property. There will be a wealth of activities to participate in and support the campaign, with many different volunteer opportunities.
GUMC is experiencing a renaissance under Pastor Dawn’s leadership, with new min-istries, affinity groups, and fellowship gatherings that enable us to achieve our vision of reaching others and making disciples for Christ. The Capital Campaign is evidence that GUMC is on the move, so stay tuned as events unfold!
Building Safe Spaces Friday, September 8th
Please mark your calendars and join us for our next Building Safe Spaces event.
We will gather on Friday, September 8th from 6 – 8 pm for dinner and some conversation around
race. This is part of our ongoing congregational effort to create a safe space for dialogue around challeng-ing, and sometimes divisive issues of our times. Please RSVP and indicate if you will need child care. To RSVP you may e-mail the church at [email protected] or text Elizabeth Phillips at 410-627-
8398.

Timber Grove Elementary Back-to-School Fundraiser
If you’ve been in a Walmart recently, you know that the back-
to-school supplies are filling the aisles—already! The sales
seem to start earlier every year. Again this year, in our on-
going partnership with Timber Grove Elementary, we will be
collecting school supplies for their students. The needs are
great, and funding is ever-shrinking. We want to do our best
to help! Two suggestions for accomplishing this are as fol-
lows:
A: Buy a quantity of the following items that teachers routine
ly purchase using their own money throughout the year.
#2 pencils—not mechanical
Glue sticks (no liquid glue)
Hardback composition notebooks, wide-ruled
**Scissors—Fiskars preferred
Crayons (max 24/box)
Highlighters—orange or yellow
2-pocket folders, assorted colors
Plastic supply boxes or pencil bags/pouches
B. On the glass display case in the glass lobby by parking lot,
on bright yellow paper, you will find a school supply list by
grade. If you are able, and this is suggested for people who
don’t already have children of their own that they’re buying
for, purchase the complete supply list for one student in one
grade. If you could put it in a bag marked with the appropriate
grade, it would be much appreciated. Also needed are back-
packs & lunch boxes for all age students.
Whatever you can do to help these children will be a blessing,
both to them and to you. Remember when YOU were so ex-
cited to have a book bag full of unbroken crayons, sharp pen-
cils, a beautiful school box or pencil case, and other miscella-
neous items in your book bag on that glorious first day? Let’s
give these kids that same happy memory!
A collection box is available in the glass lobby off parking
lot. A complete supply list is on page 9. Please have your do-
nations in by Sunday, August 20 so that we can prepare a dis-
play for a blessing of these supplies and our own kids’
backpacks by Pastor Dawn on Sunday, August 27.
THANK YOU!!!

From toddlers (with parental supervision) to senior citizens! Many volunteers are blessed by the rich experi-ence out in the fields and knowing that the Lord’s bounty will be shared with our brothers and sisters in need. It is a wonderful opportunity for our youth to serve and earn service hours.
We will depart from GUMC at 8:00am and return no later than 1:30 pm. Lunch will be provided. Contact Robin Krell (Cell: 443-871-6389 / Email: [email protected] to sign up and/or confirm if work is still on if weather is a question that day.
Baltimore Co. Christian Workcamp Thanks to all who participated in the Baltimore County Christian Workcamp in July. The heat was a challenge, but didn’t deter our dedicated team of volunteers. The recipients of our services were deeply appreciative, and friendships were built with the presence of Jesus at work in the midst of interactions. GUMC was well represented! Work included building a new porch and overdue landscaping spruce up.
Granted our workers were weary by the end of each day, but in the midst of the work there were nu-merous opportunities for fellow-ship, laughter, tears, and gather-ings with other volunteers.
It’s amazing how tired one can feel, yet still blessed by the experience in bring-ing others some much needed support to address needed repairs and normal maintenance of their homes, beyond their abil-ity to do it alone. Seeing the relief in the eyes of those we served was touching. It was a time to re-joice and makes us realize why Jesus calls us to serve others. We all learn and grow from the experience. Kudos and much thanks to those who became the hands and feet of Christ to Love. Pray. Serve.
Volunteers needed—It’s Growing Season! no experience necessary!
Mark your calendars now to join us as we gather together to help the First Fruits team pick fresh fruits and vegetables as they ripen. Upcoming SATURDAY dates are as follows: August 19 September 16 October 21

want to stay connected!

Summer Book Club
It’s not too late to join our Summer Book Club. For August, we’ll be
reading A Man Called Ove, by Fredrik Backman, a Swedish writer. The
book explores a number of themes including depression and aging, relat-
ing to others, the challenge and power of community, and more. You
can purchase a copy of the book at Amazon or pick it up at a local book
store. We hope you’ll join us Wednesday, August 23 at 6:30 pm in
the parlor for some great conversation.
FRIENDS HELPING FRIENDS ON WILKENS For the past two years about 10 church members have been providing a variety of casseroles, salads, and/or brownies for the residents near the very impoverished area at the corner of Monroe and Ramsey Street in Baltimore City. Homeless men, women and children, alcohol and drug addicted, sex trafficked, mentally ill, and hungry souls were fed weekly by Angels of Addiction.
The mission group has closed and two of the previous members have begun a new ministry called “Friends on Wilkens” to continue serving those who need to experience the hands and feet of Christ in action. Robin Krell, Pastor Dawn, Karen Sakaff, and Bob & Kathy Rittler have served the donated food to 100 to 140 area residents. On the third Thursday of each month, we could use your help with donations of easily prepared casseroles, store bought cookies, salad mix and ranch dressing. You may also join us to actually serve the food from 9 to 11 pm in Baltimore, if you’d like to do so.
Family Night at the Ball Park (RSVP by Aug 6) Join us on Saturday, August 12 for the Frederick Keys ballgame at Harry Grove Stadium in Frederick. We will start off with a tailgate party at 4pm and then the game starts up at 6:00pm. Advance purchase tickets are:$10/adults, $7/youth (12 and under), $7/seniors 65 and older) plus 2yrs and younger are free (still need a ticket). If interested in joining the fun, contact Dan Marshall: Phone: 443-463-7036 / Email: [email protected] If we get 15 or more advance sales, we can get an additional discount, so RSVP to Dan ASAP!

Glyndon United Methodist School Registration
For 2’s, 3’s, & 4’s The summer is quickly disappearing and we are now focusing on our new incoming and returning students for preschool. The first full day of pre-school is Monday, September 11.
The word is spreading and one of the most gratifying statements from parents that we hear repeated over and over again is how they love that at our preschool students (referred to as “little friends”) learn so much more then some other places that seemed more like “baby sitting” environments rather than teaching environments. Our teachers ensure our little friends learn at an amazing rate! So spread the word to anyone you know that is searching for a quality preschool before we are totally filled up and have to turn people away. That is never fun to do. Tours can be scheduled, so remind interested peo-ple, that it is first come, first served for registrations. They can contact Terri Dotterer, Preschool Director, via email at [email protected] with questions or to set up a tour. We are also hiring 2 additional assistant teachers this year, so if you know of quality candidates who would be interested in interviewing for our Tuesday & Thursday morning classes, please have them contact Terri as well to set up an interview.
Sunday, Sept 10
Deadline for submission of articles for
the September Challenger is Tuesday,
August 15. Email or drop them off
(pictures too) so everyone will know
what’s coming up in our very busy
month of September! Thanks oodles!
