Fr. Kevin Poecking Administrator, OPV Catholic Churches

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,

At some of our fall “Town Hall” meetings, several people asked for more prayer for vocations to the priesthood. As a parish grouping, I have established a Vocation Council comprised of parishioners from three of our five parishes from suggestions from our clergy team. If anyone at St. Irenaeus or St. Januarius are interested in participating on helping to foster vocations in our youth, please let me know.

Next weekend, seminarians from our Diocese, men who want to be your future priests, will be joining us for Masses at St. John the Baptist and Our Lady of Joy Churches for the 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. Masses. They will also be

visiting some of our Religious Education classes that Sunday morning. It would be great for parishioners from all of our parishes come to one of those two Masses and support these young men at such a challenging time for priesthood and also to find out more about what seminarians are like today. The seminarians travel to different parishes each month. Because one of the seminarians, Brian Myler, is from one of the parishes (St. John the Baptist), they will be visiting as one of their special visits. There will also be doughnuts provided after those two Masses. Note that while Bishop Zubik is in the photograph with the seminarians, he will not be joining them to visit us. One of the seminary faculty priests will be having that Mass and preaching about vocations and our young men studying for priesthood. Bishop Zubik will be coming back with the seminarians later in Lent to celebrate a fish fry and Stations of the Cross. There are many ways each parishioner or family can help foster vocations in our parishes. Here are some of those ways:

SEMINARIAN POSTER & PRAYERS – We have a poster of all the seminarians studying to be a priest in our diocese in every church and school in our grouping. In every church the poster is on the back wall inside the nave of the church on the

left side as you face the altar. Please take a moment to check out the poster and pick a seminarian each time you pass it to pray for that young man at church.

TRAVELING CHALICE FOR VOCATIONS One of our parishes has had a tradition of passing around a traveling chalice to individuals and families for a week of daily short prayers for vocations. The Vocation Council recommended spreading this to the entire grouping of parishioners. The experience is an opportunity to pray for intentional vocations for our young people, not just for priesthood, but for other holy vocations, marriages and calling in life of service to others. Very simply how it works is to sign up for a week by calling or emailing one of our Vocation Council members, Suzy Adamonis (412) 793-64110 or [email protected]. We’d like to establish certain months that the chalice rotates through some families at each church so that it can be picked up and returned to that church for a few weeks in a row before moving to another church. If you sign up for a given week, you will receive a reminder email or call prior to your week to confirm what church in our grouping you will pick up the chalice from the sacristy. Take the chalice home with you after Mass, pray as many of the weekday Prayers, provided in the booklets, as possible for you or your family, and return the chalice to the gift table at church the following week. When gift bearers bring up the bread and wine at Mass, you are to bring up the chalice with them and give to the priest, who will use it for that Mass.

TRAVELING STATUE OF OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE While this traveling statue is not specifically to promote vocations, it works much the same way as the traveling chalice and encourages every household to become filled with prayers for our Blessed Mother Mary, to watch over all those in every home. Contact Solimar Iorio (724) 757-3393 or [email protected] to schedule a week to pick up the statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe and pray for her intercession in our lives that week.

More information on vocation councils and vocation promotion can be found at this website: https://serraspark.org

In Christ’s love, Father Kevin

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THE SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

READING I SIR 15:15-20

If you choose you can keep the commandments, they will save you; if you trust in God, you too shall live; he has set before you fire and water to whichever you choose, stretch forth your hand. Before man are life and death, good and evil, whichever he chooses shall be given him. Immense is the wisdom of the Lord; he is mighty in power, and all-seeing. The eyes of God are on those who fear him; he understands man’s every deed. No one does he command to act unjustly, to none does he give license to sin.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM PS 119:1-2, 4-5, 17-18, 33-34

R. Blessed are they who follow the law of the Lord!

Blessed are they whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the LORD. Blessed are they who observe his decrees, who seek him with all their heart.

R. Blessed are they who follow the law of the Lord!

You have commanded that your precepts be diligently kept. Oh, that I might be firm in the ways of keeping your statutes!

R. Blessed are they who follow the law of the Lord!

Be good to your servant, that I may live and keep your words. Open my eyes, that I may consider the wonders of your law.

R. Blessed are they who follow the law of the Lord!

Instruct me, O LORD, in the way of your statutes, that I may exactly observe them. Give me discernment, that I may observe your law and keep it with all my heart.

R. Blessed are they who follow the law of the Lord!

READING 2 1 COR 2:6-10

Brothers and sisters: We speak a wisdom to those who are mature, not a wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age who are passing away. Rather, we speak God’s wisdom, mysterious, hidden, which God predetermined before the ages for our glory, and which none of the rulers of this age knew; for, if they had known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. But as it is written: What eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, and what has not entered the human heart, what God has prepared for those who love Him this God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit scrutinizes everything, even the depths of God.

R. Alleluia, alleluia. MT 11:25

Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth; you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the kingdom.

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

GOSPEL MT 5:17-37

Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place. Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do so will be called least in the kingdom of heaven.

But whoever obeys and teaches these commandments will be called greatest in the kingdom of heaven. I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.

“You have heard that it was said to your ancestors, You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgment. But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; and whoever says to his brother, ‘Raqa,’ will be answerable to the Sanhedrin; and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ will be liable to fiery Gehenna. Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar, and there recall that your brother has anything against you, leave your gift there at the altar, go first and be reconciled with your brother, and then come and offer your gift. Settle with your opponent quickly while on the way to court. Otherwise your opponent will hand you over to the judge, and the judge will hand you over to the guard, and you will be thrown into prison. Amen, I say to you, you will not be released until you have paid the last penny.

“You have heard that it was said, You shall not commit adultery. But I say to you, everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one of your members than to have your whole body thrown into Gehenna. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one of your members than to have your whole body go into Gehenna.

“It was also said, Whoever divorces his wife must give her a bill of divorce. But I say to you, whoever divorces his wife - unless the marriage is unlawful—causes her to commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

“Again you have heard that it was said to your ancestors, Do not take a false oath, but make good to the Lord all that you vow. But I say to you, do not swear at all; not by heaven, for it is God’s throne; nor by the earth, for it is his footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. Do not swear by your head, for you cannot make a single hair white or black. Let your ‘Yes’ mean ‘Yes,' and your ‘No’ mean ‘No.’ Anything more is from the evil one.

LA ADORACIÓN EUCARÍSTICA (Carta del Cardenal Norberto Rivera, primera parte)

….Continued

All families are invited to a Spring Vacation Bible School Day at

St. Joseph Parish! March 7, 2020 from 3:30-5:30pm

This afternoon will be a blend between a FIRE Night and Vacation Bible School stations that many kids love!

We will spend some time together as a family as well as break apart into kid groups and an adult group. The kid groups will rotate between various stations while the adults hear a speaker. At the end of the day, we will come together for

dinner before heading to Mass at 5:30PM.

There is no fee for the day and all ages can participate! To register, please email Steph at [email protected] with the number of people attending and please include the names and ages of children.

Thank You for Supporting SJBS Nite at the Races

Thank you to all of the parishioners, parents, friends, and alumni who participated in this year's annual Nite at the Races.

Through everyone's generosity, the event & Football Pool raised $5500 for the school. A huge THANK YOU to Marie & Rob

DiLonardo for coordinating this event! We also want to thank our Table Sponsors and all of the volunteers who put in many hours

to ensure a great time for everyone!

OPV CATHOLIC INFORMATION

SAM – Substance Addiction Ministry

The next Substance Addiction Ministry Rosary for Recovery will be Wednesday, February 19 at St. John the Baptist, 444 St. John St., Pittsburgh, PA 15239.

We will meet at 7:00PM in the church for the Rosary followed by an informal gathering for all who are afflicted or affected by addiction. It will be a safe, confidential place for people to seek education, referral and support.

For more information please contact Noreen at 412-296-1709.

DISPOSAL OF PALMS:

While last year’s Palm branches are used to make the Ashes for the beginning of Lent, it is a

messy process and we prefer to purchase the ashes from companies that do this for us.

Please put any blessed palms from last year or this year in your favorite garden at home. Do not bring your old palms to the Church. Thank you.

Winter Bugs! & Cry Rooms

Please note that with the annual winter concerns about influenza and other viruses, in addition to the global coronavirus scare, no one should be offended if the person standing near you does not want to shake hands at the Sign of Peace. They may have low immunity due to age or medical concerns, but we want them to feel comfortable at welcome at church. Please note also that CRY ROOMS are not meant for older folks or others who are ill and don’t want to be in a crowd. If you don’t have young children or special needs adults, you should NOT be in a cry room during Mass. Cry rooms should always be available to welcome those who occasionally have fussy children and still want to be at Mass with us, even for short moments during Mass. So, please don’t take their space! Ushers should kindly ask unaccompanied adults to sit in the church and NOT in a cry room. St. John the Baptist has a cry room for families, and also a balcony for those who seek to sit separately. We also livestream every 9 a.m. Mass. If you are ill or worried about traveling in the winter conditions, consider the many options to worship God in our community while respecting the needs of others.

In order to gauge how many people would willing to commit to taking this class, please call Diane at 412-798-9147 to register before March 15, 2020.

MEET THE STAFF

Patty Mahr OPV Parish Accounting

Patty became a member of Our Lady of Joy when she married and moved to the area almost 32 years ago. She resides with her husband, Steve, in the Holiday Park area of Plum. They have two sons, Phillip (22 yrs.) who lives in Baltimore, MD and Adam (20 yrs.) who attends the University of South Florida in Tampa.

Patty volunteered in different areas of the Parish over the years but was mainly involved with her family in the annual Parish Festival. Her love of children led her to becoming a Kindergarten Catechist which she enjoyed for 15 years. During that time, she began working part-time as a secretary in the CCD office and helped out during most CCD sessions and functions for almost 9 years. In July, when her position was eliminated due to the reorganization of our church grouping, Patty took a full-time position as the bookkeeper for the three Plum churches. Despite adjusting to full-time work, she really enjoys her new role within our OPV grouping.

In her spare time, Patty enjoys shopping, gardening at home and at the church, and traveling with her family. In 2005, she had the opportunity to travel with OLOJ former pastor, Fr. Al McGinnis, to Chimbote, Peru and holds that trip and the people of Chimbote very close to her heart.

At this time, if you are in need of your 2019 contributions for tax purposes, you can contact Patty at ext. 105 or email her at [email protected].
