Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
Some of you already know, but for those who don’t,
would you believe that at 52 years old, I’ve had a full hip
replacement 7 years ago? In fact, it was 7 years ago this
weekend, the “Ides of March”. It’s seems that when we’re
younger, we mark monumental moments in our lives by
things we’ve accomplished or arrived at; Kindergarten
graduation, Middle School and High School Graduations,
College, First Job, etc… Then, as many of us get older, we
mark other kinds of changes; surgeries, selling the family
home, relatives death, moving in with children and more. As
we listen to the stories in the Gospels during the Lenten
season, we might try to rethink some of our monumental
priorities. The story of the Transfiguration last week was
certainly a powerful one for the disciples. The woman at the
well and her encounter with Jesus is significant for her. The
raising of Lazarus from the dead would have been a
monumental moment for his sisters and friends. If you have a
few moments in the next several weeks of Lent for some
private time, whether quiet time at home, or drive time to
work, maybe you can think of some of the faith moments of
your life and how your encounter with our Lord has affected
your life. First Holy Communion, Confirmation and the
sacraments certainly, but significant times of prayer when
God has helped heal or direct your life. Let’s consider
reframing our life, not in terms of our accomplishments or our
decline, but in the ways that God has been with us, especially
on our journey through Lent.
We are continuing our parish’s historical
monumental moment this week with two more On Mission
Assembly meetings. This Sunday (3/15) will be our
second assembly at St. John the Baptist at 2:30 p.m. in
the Church with our third and final assembly at St.
Irenaeus Church Hall on Monday (3/16) at 7 p.m. Please
try to attend one. It’s much more important to get real truthful
information on how this merger will take place than some of
the misinformation that is often shared at local coffee shops
or parking lots.
Rich Myler is a parishioner who has been on one of
our Pastoral Councils and Super Pastoral Councils during the
On Mission transition since 2018. He has agreed to help our
grouping with the responsibilities of the Communication and
Technology Manager parish staff position that Brit Meli
recently held. He started on Tuesday this past week and will
continue to help us at least temporarily. You may also
recognize the name since his brother Brian recently entered
the seminary for the Diocese of Pittsburgh. Please welcome
Rich Myler to our parish staff.
In Christ’s love,
Father Kevin
P.S. My hip replacement was caused by a dog knocking me
down, coming from behind, while I was running outside.
Nevertheless, I continue to run and completed my first and
last Pittsburgh Marathon in 2018 with my artificial hip. I also
continue to preach that through all the accidents and
mistakes in our lives, God can heal even better than the best
medical science we can find.
Fr. Kevin Poecking
Administrator, OPV Catholic Churches
Our naming process is advancing well. As of this bulletin
printing, we had a close race between Most Holy Trinity, St.
Michael the Archangel, and Holy Family. Entries can still be
submitted through this weekend, but must be in a parish
collection or at a parish office on Sunday 3/15. The
Pastoral Councils will be meeting this week to finalize our
five that we will send to Bishop Zubik for his selection from
one of our five. Note that the highest vote doesn’t
necessarily get chosen. Only Bishop Zubik will choose from
the top five we submit. See some of the special artwork of
our parish children for possible new names for our parish
below.

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THE THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT
READING I EX 17:3-7
In those days, in their thirst for water, the people grumbled against
Moses, saying, “Why did you ever make us leave Egypt?
Was it just to have us die here of thirst with our children and our
livestock?” So Moses cried out to the LORD,
“What shall I do with this people? a little more and they will stone me!”
The LORD answered Moses, “Go over there in front of the people, along
with some of the elders of Israel, holding in your hand, as you go, the
staff with which you struck the river. I will be standing there in front of
you on the rock in Horeb. Strike the rock, and the water will flow from it
for the people to drink.” This Moses did, in the presence of the elders of
Israel. The place was called Massah and Meribah, because the Israelites
quarreled there and tested the LORD, saying, “Is the LORD in our midst
or not?”
RESPONSORIAL PSALM PS 95:1-2, 6-7, 8-9
R. If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
Upright is the word of the LORD, and all his works are trustworthy.
He loves justice and right; of the kindness of the LORD the earth is full.
R. If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
Come, let us bow down in worship; let us kneel before the LORD who
made us. For he is our God, and we are the people he shepherds, the
flock he guides.
R. If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
Oh, that today you would hear his voice: “Harden not your hearts as at
Meribah, as in the day of Massah in the desert, where your fathers
tempted me; they tested me though they had seen my works.”
R. If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
READING 2 ROM 5:1-2, 5-8
Brothers and sisters: Since we have been justified by faith, we have
peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have
gained access by faith to this grace in which we stand, and we boast in
hope of the glory of God.
And hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been
poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to
us. For Christ, while we were still helpless, died at the appointed time for
the ungodly. Indeed, only with difficulty does one die for a just person,
though perhaps for a good person one might even find courage to die.
But God proves his love for us
in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us.
R. Alleluia, alleluia. JN 4:42, 15
Lord, you are truly the Savior of the world; give me living water,
that I may never thirst again.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
GOSPEL JN 4:5-42
Jesus came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of land
that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there. Jesus,
tired from his journey, sat down there at the well. It was about noon.
A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a
drink.” His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.
The Samaritan woman said to him, “How can you, a Jew, ask me, a
Samaritan woman, for a drink?” —For Jews use nothing in common with
Samaritans.—Jesus answered and said to her,
“If you knew the gift of God and who is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,
‘you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”
The woman said to him, “Sir, you do not even have a bucket and the
cistern is deep; where then can you get this living water? Are you greater
than our father Jacob, who gave us this cistern and drank from it himself
with his children and his flocks?” Jesus answered and said to her,
“Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again; but whoever drinks
the water I shall give will never thirst; the water I shall give will become in
him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” The woman said to him,
“Sir, give me this water, so that I may not be thirsty or have to keep
coming here to draw water.”
Jesus said to her, “Go call your husband and come back.” The woman
answered and said to him, “I do not have a husband.”
Jesus answered her, “You are right in saying, ‘I do not have a husband.’
For you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your
husband. What you have said is true.” The woman said to him, “Sir, I can
see that you are a prophet. Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain;
but you people say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem.” Jesus said
to her, “Believe me, woman, the hour is coming when you will worship
the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You people
worship what you do not understand; we worship what we understand,
because salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now
here, when true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth;
and indeed the Father seeks such people to worship him.
God is Spirit, and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and
truth.” The woman said to him, “I know that the Messiah is coming, the
one called the Christ; when he comes, he will tell us everything.” Jesus
said to her, “I am he, the one speaking with you.”
At that moment his disciples returned, and were amazed that he was
talking with a woman, but still no one said, “What are you looking for?” or
“Why are you talking with her?” The woman left her water jar and went
into the town and said to the people, “Come see a man who told me
everything I have done. Could he possibly be the Christ?” They went out
of the town and came to him. Meanwhile, the disciples urged him, Rabbi,
eat.” But he said to them, “I have food to eat of which you do not know.”
So the disciples said to one another, “Could someone have brought him
something to eat?” Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of the
one who sent me and to finish his work. Do you not say, ‘In four months
the harvest will be here’? I tell you, look up and see the fields ripe for the
harvest. The reaper is already receiving payment and gathering crops for
eternal life, so that the sower and reaper can rejoice together. For here
the saying is verified that ‘One sows and another reaps.’ I sent you to
reap what you have not worked for; others have done the work, and you
are sharing the fruits of their work.”
Many of the Samaritans of that town began to believe in him because of
the word of the woman who testified, “He told me everything I have
done.” When the Samaritans came to him, they invited him to stay with
them; and he stayed there two days. Many more began to believe in him
because of his word, and they said to the woman, “We no longer believe
because of your word; for we have heard for ourselves, and we know
that this is truly the savior of the world.”

March 10, 2020
Dear Parishioners of our East Region,
Blessings to you and your families during our preparation for Easter. The Catholic Schools Regionalization initiative in the Diocese Pittsburgh is
entering an essential phase, and the themes of Lent take on special meaning for all of us as we work to come together in exciting new ways to sup-
port Catholic Education for our children.
After much consultation and study with clergy and lay leaders, we are moving forward after the closing of two beloved schools in our region: St.
Maria Goretti and East Catholic. Through this process, we have heard from parishioners throughout the region about the need for an update on the
regionalization effort for our schools and our strategic plan moving forward. Bishop Zubik and our education support team at the Diocese of Pittsburgh
are fully committed to working with us to create vibrant new school models that provide competitive learning opportunities for our children infused with
the character-building nature of our faith.
Please continue to watch for letters like this that will contain helpful information as we journey together to build Catholic schools that light the way
for our children and our faith communities!
Right now is a good time to get reacquainted with the basics of a Regional School Board, and get to know the people who make up the leadership
of the Pittsburgh-East Regional Catholic Elementary Schools.
What is a Regional Board?
The PERCES board is made of up both clergy and lay members with a representative from each of the parish groupings in a specific region. The
board meets at a minimum of once a month with the mission of helping to develop a strategy for Catholic education in a region through analyzing
critical factors about the school’s programs, financial, demographic information, and more. They have appointed a Regional Administrator and a Re-
gional Business Manager to facilitate the day-to-day operations in each of our schools.
The Board also visits buildings in the region regularly to allow members to become more familiar with unique school environments and to better un-
derstand the strengths and challenges of each school.
Ultimately, the PERCES board is responsible for offering recommendations and decisions on how to best structure the schools in the region for
success to help ensure the future viability of Catholic education.

OPV CATHOLIC INFORMATION
MEET THE STAFF
Barb Pronio
OPV Receptionist /
Safe Environment Coordinator
Barb began working as the Receptionist,
Office Administrator, and Bulletin Editor at
St. Irenaeus in September of 2006. With the OPV
church grouping reorganization, her office is now at Our Lady of Joy.
Before her employment at St. Irenaeus, Barb taught third and fourth
grade at Immaculate Heart of Mary School in Pittsburgh and was the
Director of a child care center. When her children were younger, she
was a Substitute Teacher and PTG President at St. John the Baptist
School.
Barb lives in the Rustic Ridge section of Plum with her husband, Joe.
They have four children. April, their oldest, lives in Virginia with her
husband, Casey. Their son, Mark, lives in Fox Chapel. Last July, their
daughter, Angelina, married Kyle, and they presently live in Pittsburgh.
Marissa is their youngest and she is a student at Pitt.
One of Barb’s favorite things to do is to go tent camping at Kentuck
Campground at Ohiopyle. She also enjoys hiking, swimming, and
anything that involves spending time with her kids. One of Barb’s
current positions is that of OPV Catholic Receptionist. All calls to any
of the churches in our grouping first go to Barb and she then transfers
them accordingly.
Barb is also the Safe Environment Coordinator for the five churches in
our grouping. Safe Environment is a diocesan program that requires
all church personnel and volunteers to obtain certain certifications and
background checks for the purpose of providing a safe environment
for children. If you are interested in volunteering at one of our
churches, please call Barb at 412-793-4511 and she will help you to
complete the steps in the Safe Environment Program. If you are an
existing volunteer, please remember that the Child Abuse History
Clearance and the FBI Fingerprint Clearance or waiver expire and
need to be renewed every five years. Please feel free to contact Barb
with any questions about the Safe Environment Program. She may be
reached at 412-793-4511 or by email at [email protected].

the reallife friendship that develops between Mr. Rogers

by Emmy awardwinning actor Matthew Rhys) who finally
overcomes his skepticism and pain by learning about love
and forgiveness. This is a lesson in kindness and mercy

MEDITATION ON THE JOURNEY TO THE RESURRECTION
THROUGH THE STATIONS OF THE CROSS
From the earliest of days, followers of Jesus told the story of his passion, death, and resurrection. When
pilgrims came to see Jerusalem, they were anxious to see the sites where Jesus was. These sites
become important holy connections with Jesus. Eventually, following in the footsteps of the Lord, along
the way of the cross, became a part of the pilgrimage visit. The stations, as we know them today, came
about when it was no longer easy or even possible to visit the holy sites. In the 1500's, villages all over
Europe started creating "replicas" of the way of the cross, with small shrines commemorating the places
along the route in Jerusalem. Eventually, these shrines became the set of 14 stations we now know and
were placed in almost every Catholic Church in the world.
Jon Fesz of St. Irenaeus Parish photographed all of the Stations of the Cross in all five of our churches. A booklet for our parishioners
was created that places these beautiful illustrations with reflective prayers for those who may be homebound. This booklet is available
to anyone interested by contacting Sister Lynn at (412) 793-4511 X203 or [email protected].
¿CÓMO VIVIR LA CUARESMA? (segunda parte)
Encontrar el propio desierto
Reflexionar.
