FAITH FORMATION REGISTRATION 2020-2021
Faith Formation registration continues this weekend for all returning students and students in Grades 1 through 9 who may be new to our program. Mike Fitzpatrick and Anne Ca-bral will be available in the parish center of Saint Thomas More Church to receive registrations and answer any ques-tions. Faith Formation materials for Grades 1 through 5 may be picked up following Sunday Masses in the parish center this weekend.
UPDATING OUR PARISH CENSUSâ
Last week we began a massive undertaking: up-dating our parish census. Recently, the Bishop mandated all parishes and institutions of the Dio-cese to use the same record keeping computer software for uniformity, efficiency, and better communication/sharing of information. This is an ideal time to update our parish records. We need to reach as many people as possible and in the most economical of ways. If you have not done so already, please take a new census form from the tables near the doors of the church as you leave Mass today. They are color coded by parish: St. Patâs â green; St. Louis â blue; and St. Thomas, pink. Complete the form and return it in the collection boxes when you return for Mass next week or mail it to the parish office (386 Lu-ther Avenue, Somerset, MA 02726). Eventually, we will mail and email those who are not with us at weekend Mass. If you know of any neighbors, family members or friends who should be enrolled in our census, please bring forms to them. Your assistance is very much appreciated!
St. Patrickâs Christmas Raffle
Even though we cannot host our annual Christmas Bazaar, Saint Patrick Parish is sponsoring a $1,000 grand prize raffle to be drawn the first weekend of December. Raffle ticket books will be available after Masses. Chances are $2.00 each or a book of 6 for $10.00. Please return your payment and the winning stubs in the collection box or to the parish office. Questions please call Ed Mendes at (508) 678-9141. Many thanks for your support!
November: Month of All Souls
Traditionally, during the month of November we pray for âthe holy souls,â our beloved family members and friends who have gone before us in faith. We pray our beloved dead into Godâs eter-nal embrace. In these pandemic days, to avoid spread of germs, we invite you to complete your own âmemorial page.â With todayâs bulletin you will find an insert to list the names of deceased family members and friends. There is no limit on the number of people you would like us to re-member in prayer. Please complete the list and return it to the parish office via the collection box-es or through the mail. During the month of No-vember, these pages will be placed on the altar and our beloved dead remembered in all the Masses celebrated in our churches. This year, our parishioners who have been buried from any of our three churches between Novem-ber 1, 2019 and October 31, 2020, will be remem-bered at our annual Memorial Mass on Saturday, October 31, at the 4:00 p.m. Vigil Mass.
Scripture Insights
Initially, todayâs first reading may take us by surprise. Cyrus? The Lordâs anointed? Cyrus was the Per-sian king who conquered Babylon during the exile, thus winning freedom for the Jewish people. Isaiah speaks of him as the Lordâs âanointedâ (literally meaning, âmessiahâ), the agent God used on behalf of his chosen people even though Cyrus did not âknowâ God â that is, was not in covenant relationship with him as a member of the chosen people. The Old Testament books of Ezra and Nehemiah recount the Jewsâ return to Jerusalem and the rebuilding of the Temple and the city, showing how the people appropriately ârepaidâ both God and the government their respec-tive dues. There was no doubt that God was God and that no other ruler was more supreme. In todayâs Gospel reading, the conflict between Jesus and the Jewish leaders continues. Today, the Pharisees are in the spotlight. Enlisting the aid of the Herodians, who were supporters of the ruling dynasty of Herod the Great and thus loyal to Rome, the Pharisees are trying to put allegiance to the government in conflict with covenant fi-delity to God. In effect, the Pharisees are playing both sides in order to entrap Jesus. In response, Jesus affirms the just claims of both. âRepay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.â What belongs to God is, of course, everything and everyone. How fittingly todayâs Responsorial Psalm acclaims âGive the Lord glory and honor . . . The gods of the nations are things of naught . . . The Lord is King.â Let us pray this day, for a heightened awareness that all belongs to God. Let us render the tribute that is rightly due. ___________________________________________________________________________________________
Prayer Before An Election As we look to our upcoming national elections, the Catholic bishops of the United States ask us to offer this pray-er: Lord God, as the election approaches, We seek to better understand the issues and concerns that confront our city/state/country, and how the Gospel compels us to respond as faithful citizens in our community. We ask for eyes that are free from blindness so that we might see each other as brothers and sisters, one and equal in dignity, especially those who are victims of abuse and violence, deceit and poverty. We ask for ears that will hear the cries of children unborn and those abandoned, and of men and women oppressed because of race or creed, religion or gender. We ask for minds and hearts that are open to hearing the voices of leaders who will bring us closer to your Kingdom. We pray for discernment so that we may choose leaders who hear your Word, live your love, and keep in the ways of your truth as they follow in the steps of Jesus and his Apostles and guide us to your Kingdom of justice and peace. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen!
