HELP RELIEF EFFORTS IN PAKISTAN
Catholic Relief Services (CRS), the official international
humanitarian agency of the Catholic community in the
United States, is bringing critical aid to thousands of
people affected by the recent flooding in Pakistan. To
donate, please call 1-877-HELP-CRS, donate online at
www.crs.org or send a check to Catholic Relief Ser-
vices, P.O. Box 17090, Baltimore, MD 21203-7090. In
the memo portion of your check, please write: Pakistan
Flooding.
The Pastor’s Mutterings You see an ad for a car in a magazine but, strangely, there is no mention of the price, even
in the small print. Or you're seated in an elegant restaurant reading the menu, but notice there
are no prices associated with any of the entrès. A phrase coined by the wealthy industrialist
J.P. Morgan immediately comes to mind: “If you have to ask the price, you can't afford it.” He
was referring to the cost of a yacht in the 19th century, but his words also reach to the heart of
today's Gospel.
Jesus sets before us a clear and challenging picture of the cost of discipleship: “If anyone
comes to me without hating father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and
even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.” Perhaps we could lower the price by bartering a little bit, but remember
if you have to ask you can’t afford it.
To follow Jesus is to make some serious choices about the direction of our lives. It means we may not be able to
do business the way we have become accustomed. It might force us to give up our favorite resentments and grudges.
It would mean that even the money we have is no longer ours alone, but a tool to care for those in need. To follow
Jesus will surely turn upside down some, or most, or all of the things we hold dear.
But ultimately when it comes to the cost of discipleship, we discover that JP Morgan was wrong. We may have
some questions, doubts, fears, and apprehensions about following Jesus, but the truth is we can afford it. We have
what it takes. The cost is one life -- and each of us has one life.
Jesus turns around the wisdom of the world and says: if you choose not to hoard your gifts but give them away,
if you spend your life and give it away, you will discover it is no longer you who lives, but Christ Jesus alive in you.
And you will be happier than the wealthiest person in the world.

RESPECT LIFE NEWS
YOU are invited . . . to participate in our third annual Spiritual Adoption Campaign where we will pledge to pray
for an unborn, unknown child who is newly conceived and in danger of abortion. Be sure to pray for his or her par-
ents, too! Even our youngest parishioners can pray with their families. You can pick up a prayer card containing the
special prayer after all of the Masses on Sept. 11 and 12 in the Narthex. If you can’t make it on those dates, call Beth
Devane (773-239-2639), and we’ll deliver a prayer card to you. Pray this prayer each day for nine months. At the
end of nine months (June 2011), we will honor our “spiritually adopted” babies with a parish collection of baby items
for mothers in need. This past June, we honored our spiritually adopted babies from last fall with a Diaper Drive for
Birthright. Please take a look at the kind "thank you" note from Birthright posted on the bulletin board in the Narthex.

HEARTS OF ROCK AND SAND: THE SPIRITUALITY OF VULNERABILITY IN LAY LEADERSHIP IN PUBLIC PRAYER
A presentation on the spirituality of lay ministers leading public prayer will
be given by Avis Clendenen, D.Min., Ph.D., on Tuesday, September 7,
2010 from 7:00- 8:30 p.m. at the McDonough Chapel at Saint Xavier
University. This evening program offers insights into a spirituality of
personal vulnerability as the place from which lay ministers find the
courage and compassion to stand with others in their most vulnerable
moments. Please contact Kitty Ryan at 773-779-1166 ext. 226 or
[email protected] to register.

JOIN THE ST. BARNABAS ADULT CHOIR 2010-2011 SEASON
Music is an exciting and fulfilling ministry with the power to express what words cannot. Music touches the soul, heals the heart and enhances our prayer. It is a wonderful way to become involved in our parish as we give back to God the talents and gifts God has bestowed upon us. St. Barnabas parish is looking to continue developing a full, vibrant and energetic choir including both the young and the old gathered as one in prayer as we lead the song of the assembly at the 10:00 a.m. Sunday liturgies from September through May. We rehearse once a week on Wednesday evenings from 7:00—9:00 p.m.in the church. Anyone from high school age and up who loves to sing is invited and encouraged to join us. Men’s voices are especially needed! No experience is necessary! We are also seeking experienced instrumentalists who would be willing to share their gifts and talents with the faith community of St. Barnabas. Please consider joining us for a spiritually and musically uplifting experience! Rehearsals will begin on Wednesday, September 8th at 7:00 p.m. in church. Feel free to bring a friend. If you have any questions, please contact Kitty Ryan at 773-779-1166 ext 226 or by e-mail at [email protected]

JOIN THE ST. BARNABAS CHILDREN’S CHOIR 2010-2011 SEASON
Music is an exciting and fulfilling ministry with the power to express what words cannot. Music touches the soul, heals the heart and enhances our prayer and worship. The beautiful sound of children’s voices raised in song in praise of God is a very uplifting and moving experience. We would like to continue expanding our full, vibrant and energetic children’s choir at St. Barnabas to further enhance our liturgies.
Any student, in grades 3-8 in Fall of 2010, is invited to join the St. Barnabas Children’s Choir. Rehearsals will be held every Wednesday from 2:45 – 4:00 p.m. in the church beginning on Wednesday, September 8, 2010. As the Choir continues to grow we will be able to build on the foundation we have set by doing more work with the Orff xylophones and by adding more challenging music to our repertoire. The Children’s Choir will lead the music at various liturgies from September through May. A detailed schedule will be distributed at a later date.
Anyone who loves to sing is encouraged to join us in this fun, exciting and fulfilling ministry. It is a wonderful op-portunity for the young members of our faith community to learn more about their faith and to serve both God and our parish. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions at 773-779-1166 ext. 226 or [email protected] NAME: ______________________________________ SCHOOL: _____________________________________ GRADE_______________ (Fall 2010) RM___________ MOTHER’S NAME: ____________________________ FATHER’S NAME:_____________________________ ADDRESS: ____________________________________ HOME PHONE: ________________________________ MOTHER’S CELL PHONE:______________________ FATHER’S CELL PHONE: ______________________ EMAIL ADDRESS______________________________ PLEASE RETURN TO RECTORY ATTN: KITTY RYAN
