Mass Times 8:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., 12:00 noon

Dear Brothers and Sisters of Our Lady of Mount Carmel,

Welcome! Today is Palm Sunday, the beginning of Holy Week, our highest of Holy Days. Thank you for being here today and I hope you will be able to join us several more times this week.

On Thursday at 7:30 p.m. we will celebrate Holy Thursday, recalling the Last Supper and the great gift of the Eucharist. Celebrating the Eucharist together is our principal act of Catholic worship. We have Eucharist every day and we ask you to come every week, all because Jesus gave us this gift and this mandate on the day we call Holy Thursday.

Holy Thursday is also the day when we carry out another of Jesus’ mandates – that we serve one another and symbolically do that by washing the feet of our fellow disciples. I most sincerely ask every single one of you reading this letter to consider the following invitation. Would you be willing to let us wash your feet on Holy Thursday? Some parishes wash every person’s feet. Here at OLMC, I invite everyone, adult and child, man and woman to come forward and allow your priests and deacons to wash your feet.

If you are open to this, of course you have to come prepared to remove one shoe and one stocking and permit the minister to pour water and then dry your feet. I beg you not to consider this a joke. Rather, I view it as the most poignant of Christian symbols. We would be humbled and honored if many of you would participate in this Holy Thursday ritual that was mandated by the Lord Jesus.

On Good Friday we will participate in the Tenafly Ecumenical service at 1:00 p.m. and then we will hold our own services at 7:30 in the evening.

There is only one Mass on Holy Saturday and that is the Easter Vigil Mass at 8:00 p.m. The highlight will be the reception of three members of our parish family into full sacramental participation: Dr. Brian Aslami, Oresti Gjini, and Marko Gjini have been preparing all year for this great moment. They will be baptized, receive the Eucharist for the first time and be confirmed, all in the same Easter Vigil ceremony. Special thanks to Sr. Regina Chassar for all her good works with these catechumens throughout the last year.

Easter Sunday we will gather again three times: at 8:00 a.m., at 10:00 a.m. and at 12:00 noon.

I hope we will see you often during our Holy Days. Sincerely yours in Christ and Our Lady of Mount Carmel,

fr. Dan [email protected]

The Church Offices will be closed on Good Friday.

A PRAYER FOR HOLY WEEK

At the cross her station keeping, stood the mournful mother weeping,

close to Jesus at the last. In the passion of my Maker, be my sinful soul partaker,

may I bear with her my part. Of his passion bear the token, in a spirit bowed and broken

bear his death within my heart. May his wounds both wound and heal me,

he enkindle, cleanse, and heal me, be his cross my hope and stay.

CHURCH DECORATORS

NEEDED!

We will be decorating our church for Easter and need your help! Whether you have an eye for decorating or just hands to help, you are invited to beautify our altar and church for Easter. We will begin decorating about 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 26th and hope to finish by noon. Any amount of time you wish to give is appreciated. Please contact Mary Ann at the Church Office at 201-568-0545 or [email protected].

Perhaps the most striking thing about the first saint of our Church is that too little is known about him. The blessed Andres from Canada was a humble man who never learned how to read or write, however, he dedicated his life to serve others in the name of Saint Joseph and was able to erect (based on donations) the greatest church of Canada – the Basilica of Saint Joseph in Montreal.

It’s curious that Saint Joseph doesn’t appear as a physical image in many churches. Perhaps his manifest humbleness has defined him in such a way that many times we forget about him.

He had to live through an immense responsibility. It is possible that he didn’t know the universal significance that the caring of the Son of God was going to have in the future of our lives, generation after generation, however, he did it with a unique obedience to the Lord, but above all, with the love and responsibility of a father and husband ready to face and give everything for his family.

Despite the exodus, difficulties and fears with which Saint Joseph had to struggle, I have no doubt that he influenced the personal growth and education of Jesus. For instance, if we ask him for a guide, or just simply to accompany us in our lives, we would be surprised at the effect that he can have on us.

Thank God we have a beautiful image in our church and I don’t think it is a coincidence. This image reminds us that he is open and wiling to listen to us in the same way he listened to Jesus, to give us support that in many occasions we need.

I would like to invite you to discover that the man, who assumed the role of father of Jesus on earth, can also assume the role of father, brother, friend, “buddy,” or however you would like to call him, to us. He is there, humble and modest, waiting for you.

– Jose A. Luna

Jubilee Year of Mercy

December 8, 2015 – November 20, 2016

Lord Jesus Christ,

you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him.

Show us your face and we will be saved.

Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money;

the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness

only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal,

and assured Paradise to the repentant thief.

Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman:

“If you knew the gift of God!”

You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all

by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world,

its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness

in order that they may feel compassion

for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after,

loved, and forgiven by God.

Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing,

so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be

a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm,

may bring good news to the poor,

proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind.

We ask this through the intercession of

Mary, Mother of Mercy, you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit

for ever and ever.

Amen.
