IN THE CARE OF THE AUGUSTINIANS

Readings for next week 2nd February: Malachi 3:1-4 Hebrews 2:14-18 Luke 2:22-40

One of the common ways for God to communicate with human beings, as related in the Hebrew Scriptures, is through

dreams—Abraham, Jacob, Joseph and Hannah are famous examples. In this text, God communicates to Joseph the

importance of this child and the integrity of his mother, Mary, using God’s favoured method. Being intuitive to the

voice of God is an important aspect of faith.

Australia Day falls on a Sunday this year which allows us to celebrate it liturgically this weekend at all our masses. As we celebrate our national day with pride we also pray for our country, its leaders and citizens as we begin a new year together under the skies of the Southern Cross.

PRAYER FOR AUSTRALIA DAY

May the fire of the Spirit be in our thoughts

Making them true, good and just. May it

protect us from the evil one.

May the fire be in our eyes. May it open our

eyes to share what is good in life may the fire

be on our lips, so that we may speak the truth

in kindness. May the fire be in our ears. We

pray that we may hear with a deep listening so

that we may hear the flow of water and of all

creation. Amen.

parish schools.

Our own schools are full and the number of young children has

increased beyond anticipation.

Secondly, a number of our own catechists who have served for

many years are no longer able to continue in the role. If you could

spare an hour a week to assist to go to a classroom on a weekday to

assist it would be of great benefit and help us. Please contact Ricki

Hayes through the parish office.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK Third Sunday of the Year (A ) 26-01-2014

‘Immediately they left their nets and followed him.’ Matthew 4:20

At school: Am I eager to talk to Jesus even when I’m busy?

At work or study: What net entangles me, keeping me from following the way of Jesus?

In my family life Are we as keen to follow Jesus as we follow our favourite Football team?

Discipleship this week! String up a net near a door. As you go by, pray to follow Jesus!

The year has begun in earnest with holidays now a memory and school bags being dusted off for another new term. While there has been sadness with a number of recent bereavements in our community there is also cause for thanskgiving with the farewell for Fr Tony Banks next

weekend, February 2nd and the celebration of Fr Abel van der Veer’s Golden Jubilee later in the month on the weekend of February 22/23rd. As parish groups and committees resume their meetings and activities hopefully refreshed and enthused it is a good time to take stock of a number of important issues that impact upon us. Our parish State School Catechetical Program while not in crisis is a real concern. Despite the generous ongoing efforts of our dedicated team of catechists, the increased number of children in our local schools and a number of retirees from our catechist ranks is placing a severe strain on all concerned. The simple story is that many children of catholic families will not receive religious instruction unless we have more volunteers to help share the burden. Jesus’ words, “My yoke is easy, my burden light” should bring some comfort. The next few months will see the renovations at St Kieran’s also realised after a protracted length of time again interrupted by the festive period. In conjunction with this work we will also conduct a Mini Planned Giving Campaign as it is now apparent our income is again dropping significantly since the Thanksgiving Program of two years ago. All in all, much to engage our interest in the coming few months.

PRAYER FOR OUR NATION

Father God. Sovereign Lord who rules over all. We thank you for this land in which we live its awesome beauty and its

rich resources. Give us wisdom so that we might be good stewards of what you have entrusted to us. Help us to

respect and care for our environment. We believe you are the creator and sustainer of our land, so we ask you to

bless it. In particular, we pray for rain in those areas that have been affected by drought. Creator God, give us a

fruitful land, we pray. We pray too for those affected by floods comfort and keep them in your love.

Father, bless our land and its people; guide our leaders; enable us, your church, to walk across this land and among its

people in the spirit of Jesus giving grace, doing justice, bringing peace and honouring You. Amen.
