A boy stands on a lakeshore. Behind him is all he’s ever known. Ahead: a chance for love but a much higher chance of death. He’s had a happy life, and a sheltered one. But his father gambled away that life, the debt cannot be paid in money and it won’t be his father who pays. Childhood is over…

Dominic Kelly, Bridget Marsden & Leif Ottosson combine storytelling and music into a playful and gripping performance. They bring to life an ancient full-blooded fairy tale for modern audiences, weaving versions from Norway, Scotland, Ireland and India with contemporary Scandinavian folk music. Through it they explore the consequences for the young when older generations fail to make adult decisions.

When Moon and Stars are shining in your eyesThen I will sing to you a lullabyThe day is over now it’s time for bedBut with five More Minutes we can play instead?

Aimed at children ages 3-6 and their families, 5 More Minutes is a funny and magical show about bedtime for children and their grown-ups, in which we explore the fun, frustration and fantasy from that magical time between awake and asleep. Real world play will blur with the magic of dreams as we all try to settle down and finally get ready to say goodnight and go to sleep… unless that is, we can have 5 More Minutes!?

Beethoven - Leonore Overture No.3Saint-Saëns - Violin Concerto No.3Brahms - Symphony No.3

Sergej Bolkhovets - conductor Sophie Rosa - violin

Eyes down for all the threes! Dissatisfied with his original overture for the opera Fidelio, Beethoven ended up composing four versions. Leonore No.3 is one of them, and considered by many as the best and most dramatic. Of Saint-Saëns' three concertos for violin, the last one is the most popular, and for good reason. Dedicated to the composer-virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate, it combines technical fireworks with drama, melodic invention, and a beautifully serene second movement. Brahms wrote four symphonies but the renowned music critic Eduard Hanslick said that “the Third strikes me as being artistically the most perfect.” Full of the romantic drama you would expect from Brahms in the outer movements, the second movement shows Brahms’ more pastoral style and the third movement, instead of the rapid scherzo norm of the 19th-century, is an intensely lyrical Allegretto full of nostalgic yearning. For this concert, LMO welcome back the dream team of conductor Sergej Bolkhovets and violinist Sophie Rosa after their electrifying concert with LMO last season.

Liverpool International Jazz Festival 2019Liverpool International Jazz Festival (LIJF) was established in 2013 by Liverpool Hope University, and in previous years has included performances from some of Jazz music’s leading lights – artists such as Courtney Pine, Denys Baptiste, Roller Trio, Impossible Gentlemen, Kit Downes, Led Bib, Philip Catherine, GoGo Penguin, Troyka, Neil Cowley Trio, and Dennis Rollins’ Velocity Trio.

The emphasis of the Festival is on contemporary instrumental jazz in a variety of styles, taking audience members on a musical journey that traverses numerous genres and cross-genres. Along the way, there are support sets from North West artists, masterclasses, and workshops from Festival performers and after-events.

The Seventh Liverpool International Jazz Festival will take place from Thursday 21st to Sunday 24th February 2019 and is supported by LiverpoolJazz.

Over the years, Random/Control has developed a very distinct band sound and approach, adopting projects that transform different musical material to their very idiosyncratic instrumentation. For instance, the group began its life with interpretations of Austrian folk music and performances of Helbock’s original compositions.

More recently, the trio’s repertoire derives inspiration from the music of Helbock’s favourite jazz piano players, with arrangements of some of their most famous tunes. New, exciting versions of Watermelon Man by Herbie Hancock or Bolivia by Cedar Walton have emerged, but also soft, atmospheric pieces like Keith Jarrett´s My Song shine like new.

Formed of keyboardist Dan Nicholls (who has worked with Matthew Herbert), drummer Dave Smith (Robert Plant’s band) and guitar and synth man Matt Calvert (Three Trapped Tigers, Heritage Orchestra), Strobes has created, via their debut release Brokespeak, a sound that eschews genre and feels free from time-stamps.

They are an intensely high-octane group that fire off frantic tempos and intricate complexities, yet they also retain an accessibility through fluid grooves and an engaging sense of melodic intuition. Conjuring big beats and a vast array of sonic possibilities, Strobes’ music flickers effortlessly between the worlds of electro-improv, minimalist polyrhythm, Afrocentric grooves and distinctively original hooks. Built from collective composition, studio production, live sampling and improv jams, the music ranges from fiery, exhilarating odd-tempo loops, to polyphonic synth soundscapes and, according to TheArtsDesk, 'beats that make loose clothing shimmer and earrings rattle'.

STROBESFriday 22nd February 2019, 7.30pm £11.50

Dan Nicholls - keysMatt Calvert - guitars/synthsDave Smith - drums

The supporting artist for this concert is Kollega, a wonky electro-jazz quartet from Lancaster playing all originals. Fusing loops, irreverent samples, live processed bass and tiny analogue synths with acoustic drums and tenor sax they paint a uniquely organic futuristic soundscape over some big funky grooves creating works that are extraordinarily musical, animated and captivating.

MILAPFEST PRESENTS AFTERNOON RAGASSaturday 23rd February 2019, 1pm£6.50

Manish Pingle - Mohan veenaGurdain Rayatt - tablaJack Jennings - electric guitar

In this unique performance, three extraordinary musicians come together to celebrate the beauty of Indian Classical music and its long association with Jazz.

Manish Pingle is one of the world’s leading Mohan veena (Indian slide guitar) players. This world-class musician is a disciple of Ustad Shahid Parvez, the renowned sitar maestro. Joining him on stage is Gurdain Rayatt, a disciple of Pandit Shankar Ghosh and one of the UK’s leading tabla players, having accompanied many of India’s most prestigious artists. Completing the line-up is electric guitarist, Jack Jennings. Jack studied the sitar with Donough Sanfay, a disciple of Amarnath Mishra, and is known for his pioneering approach to the adaptation of Indian classical music for the electric guitar. The Trio will take the audience on a dynamic and exciting journey through the world of Indian Classical music. Whilst the music they play is in keeping with tradition, the innovative inclusion of the electric guitar embraces new timbres and melodic nuances without compromising the original spirit and intensity of the music. This is a rare combination of instruments and musicians from different backgrounds, celebrating the music that brought them together.

DOUBLE BILL: DOWNES & CHALLENGER AND WATTS & GREWSaturday 23rd February 2019, 4pmVenue: The Great Hall £11.50

Kit Downes is a BBC Jazz Award- winning, Mercury Music Award nominated, solo recording artist for ECM Records who has toured the world with groups such as Squarepusher, Troyka, Empirical and Nostalgia 77, collaborative projects such as ENEMY, Vyamanikal, and duo projects with Lucy Railton and Aidan O’Rourke. He has also collaborated with composers Matt Rogers and Mica Levi, electronic musician Leafcutter John, and drummer Seb Rochford.

After being asked by the Southbank Centre in 2014 to write a new work for the opening festival of the recently refurbished Royal Festival Hall Organ, he went on to work with Aldeburgh Music and Tom Challenger on a project called Vyamanikal, a series of recordings documenting extended techniques on various local church organs (often in various states of disrepair). Very recently, in 2018, he released his first solo album for the ECM label, an album of music for solo organ entitled Obsidian. He is joined for this very special concert by saxophonist Tom Challenger.

Kit Downes - pianoTom Challenger - saxophone

Trevor Watts - saxophone Stephen Grew - piano

Since the 1960s, saxophonist Trevor Watts has been at the forefront of many innovations within Jazz, World and improvised musical areas, both as a saxophone player, percussionist and composer. He is the only surviving founder member of the hugely influential Spontaneous Music Ensemble, and has, through the years, formed bands and collaborated with musicians as diverse as Don Cherry, Archie Shepp, Steve Lacy, Kent Carter, Rashied Ali, Steve Swallow, Bobby Bradford, Cyro Baptista and Stan Tracey. Currently his main artistic projects include a long-standing duo with pianist Veryan Weston, and work with the group Moire Music Drum Orchestra.

Pianist Stephen Grew is one of Europe's most dedicated and imaginative pianists. His playing, free from the constraints of traditional harmonic, melodic and rhythmic structures, is a virtuosic tour-de-force of dynamic extremes, percussive effects and spontaneous atonal flourishes, by turn surprising, witty and breath-taking. In 1995 he formed his band Grew Trio which went on to tour Europe extensively. Since then, he has gone on to collaborate with some of the leading figures in free-improvised music including Pat Thomas, Paul Hession, Keith Tippett, Evan Parker and Clive Bell amongst many others.

CURLY WOODWIND WORKSHOP DAY (FEAT. ANDY SHEPPARD)Sunday 24th February 2019, 12noonVenue: Warehouse Theatre Free Admission To register, please contact Curly Woodwind on 0151 707 9468 or email [email protected]

The supporting artist for this concert is Manchester quintet, Artephis. Described by mentor Mike Walker (The Impossible Gentlemen) as having ‘an organic, collectively individual sound that always has an eye on the narrative’, the group has toured extensively throughout the UK. They are a Jazz North Northern Line artis, and former Jazz North Introduces artist.

Sixty years ago in 1959, Dave Brubeck recorded the internationally known and influential album Time Out. It is an album that, along with Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue, John Coltrane’s Giant Steps and Ornette Coleman’s The Shape of Jazz to Come, changed the direction of modern jazz. From it, of course, everybody knows Take Five, which came out in 1959 following the release of Blue Rondo a la Turk which was influenced by the classic Dave Brubeck Quartet’s ambassadorial tour of Europe and Asia.

As a 10-year old boy, Darius Brubeck was present with his father on that very tour and during this concert, he and his quartet, formed 12 years ago, will celebrate that musical and cultural journey with hits from Time Out, but also with many original compositions and Darius’s stories.

Sponsored by Curly Woodwind, Vandoren Sax Products, Yanagisawa Saxes and Trevor James Saxes.

Liverpool sax specialists Curly Woodwind host another action packed afternoon of workshops and demonstrations for all sax players and enthusiasts. This year, international sax superstar Andy Sheppard guests with an informative lecture on all aspects of his playing, practicing and performing – a great treat to gain some useful insights from one of the UK's finest. Curly Woodwind will also be hosting workshops throughout the afternoon for players to join in and learn instrument techniques and useful approaches to improvisation. Bring your sax and join in.

10 TRIPLE BILL: AFTER THE FLOOD, DEEP CABARET, ANCIENT INFINITY ORCHESTRASunday 24th February 2019, 1pm, 2pm & 3pm£11.50

After The Flood (1pm):Neil Campbell - guitarMarty Snape - guitarDes Murphy - keysRoger Gardiner - Overwater bassViktor Nordberg - drums

Imagine if the world was almost destroyed and there were just a few survivors left. With the goal of building a new positive world from the wreckage of the past what sort of music would surviving musicians make? ATF create a pan-global music where each musician is an equal part of the whole. Their music draws on minimalism, folk music, progressive rock, African, Indian and other indigenous musical styles, using polyrhythms, cyclical structures and tight arrangements but allowing plenty of space for improvisation and self-expression.

Deep Cabaret (2pm):Maja Bugge - celloSteve Lewis - vocals and guitarBen McCabe - drums and vocalsMatt Robinson - bass clarinet, baritone saxophonePaul Sherwood - hurdy-gurdy, bagpipes

Deep Cabaret emerged fully-formed from the intertidal mudflaps and cowbelly quicksands of Morecambe Bay creating an entrancement of riffs and drones. Desert blues improv and noir-drenched dronesongs; hurdies, bagpipes, cyzyk, cello , bass clarinet and bass drums make sparkling jazz, rooted folk and torching vocals that target your heart, spine, brain and feet. The music is fulsome and romantic one moment, edgy and disturbing the next. With lyrics sampled from literature, science, sit-coms, anything that has something interesting to say about being human.

Ancient Infinity Orchestra (3pm):Ozzy Moysey - bassElliot Roffe - bassJames Milligan - guitarEvan Davies - violinMatthew Cliffe - saxophone/fluteJacob Rider - saxophoneJoel Stedman - bass clarinet/flute/ percussionJoe Love - drums

Ancient Infinity Orchestra is a nine-piece ensemble hailing from Leeds. One of the group’s starting aims was to distance itself from the perhaps overtly technical aspects of academic music and to find expression in compositions inspired by elemental forces, social politics and devotional music. In doing so the ensemble retain a sense of joy and exploration through improvisations that run the gamut from singing bowl and gong soundscapes to full band conversations; from a whisper to a roar. They find themselves Influenced by artists such as Sun Ra, Pharoah Sanders and the Art Ensemble of Chicago and also draw influence from African, Indian and devotional music.

11Atom String Quartet is one of the most intriguing string quartets in the world, and also one of best Polish jazz bands. The group combines the capabilities of a string quartet (i.e. two violins, viola and cello) with improvisation in its broadest sense. The set of instruments of a chamber music ensemble, which is most classic and firmly established in music tradition, enables the artists to search for new sounds and forms. It is difficult to define the musical style of the group which, besides jazz, is inspired by Polish folk, music of various regions of the world, and also contemporary and classical music. The Atom String Quartet was established in Warsaw in 2010 and, since doing so, has performed at most of the world's major Jazz Festivals, produced four original albums, and collaborated with artists such as Branford Marsalis and Bobby McFerrin (amongst many others).

12 VEIN FEATURING ANDY SHEPPARDSunday 24th February 2019, 7.30pm£15

Andy Sheppard - saxophoneMichael Arbenz - pianoThomas Lähns - bassFlorian Arbenz - drums

Since Swiss trio VEIN was formed, it has regularly joined forces with guest musicians in horizon-expanding and ground-breaking projects. Their longstanding collaboration with the astonishing British saxophonist Andy Sheppard makes for an exciting and unconventional quartet and a meeting point for four musicians with great chemistry.

Just as the trio has created an almost symbiotic interplay by bringing together its background, its stupendous musical togetherness and its concept of maximum equality for all members, it never fails to find an incredibly inspiring addition in Andy Sheppard.

Sheppard, with his distinctive and modern style that is always respectful of tradition, is one of the most important saxophonists of today's Jazz scene. He masterfully moves through the groove-heavy, lyrical, rhythmically and harmonically complex and open pieces and passages of the quartet's repertoire, which mainly consists of their own compositions, and brings to them the spirit of great Jazz playing.

DiN Records, one of the UK’s premier ambient electronic labels, presents an evening of modular synth music. These instruments have made a real comeback in recent years and provide the performer with all the building blocks for them to create their own custom system. As such, every performance is a unique sonic event.

d’Voxx is a live electronic music duo and will be launching their debut album, Télégraphe (DiN58) in 2019. Their music both looks at the past with its tightly choreographed, Berlin School inspired sequence lines but wraps this in a gorgeous blanket of modern ambience.

Ian Boddy (DiN label boss) and Nigel Mullaney are seasoned electronic music performers and will be pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved with modular systems in a live setting. Mullaney’s rhythmic excursions provide the backdrop for Boddy to improvise using fascinating electronic instruments such as the Resonant Garden & French Connection Ondes Martenot keyboard.

It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to The Angel Field Festival, 2019.

ANGEL FIELD FESTIVAL 2019

The Angel Field Festival is a new addition to Liverpool’s cultural calendar - an international, combined arts festival situated in the Everton district of Liverpool, which sets out to delight, challenge, beguile and thrill with its content and events. It will feature music, theatre, dance, film, visual art and storytelling from around the world as well as that found much closer to home. We offer a hearty welcome to our audiences as we seek to provide excellent arts for all - for our mind, bodies and spirit.

Liverpool Hope University’s Angel Field Festival builds upon the rich tradition of the Cornerstone Festival and will run from 22nd – 30th March 2019, with our newly renovated Creative Campus as its hub and its highly-commended Angel Field Garden at its heart; its programming will also reach out across the historic, cultural city of Liverpool through collaboration with our many cultural partners.

2019 marks the 50th year since the first moon-landing, 30 years since the demolition of the Berlin Wall, 30 years since the end of the Ceausescu regime in Romania, 100 years since the Bauhaus and, from March 2019 of course, the commencement of Brexit. These historic events will inform some of the shape of the festival’s content.

Performances and events will feature collaborations with Tate Liverpool, FACT, National Museums Liverpool, RLPO, Milapfest, IMMIX Ensemble and The European Opera Centre, alongside performances from students and alumni of Liverpool Hope University.

THE WASHING UPFriday 22nd March 2019, 3pmVenue: The Warehouse Theatre £6.50

With original songs and stories, The Washing Up takes an absurd look at the politics and practice of this every day act. Audiences have told performers, small performance adventures, that the show is “bonkers and brilliant”. Join them to explore what lies beneath the surface bubbles and find out whose turn it is to do the dishes and how they should be done. Every kitchen sink has a story to tell, of power struggles and pots and pans, of greasy plates and moments of quiet contemplation…

The Washing Up was premiered at Your Place, Brighton Festival in 2018 and has also been performed in a range of community settings including Brighton Youth Centre, Hurstpierpoint Church, Pavilions (Brighton’s Drug and Alcohol service provide) and The Railway Land Trust in Lewes. The piece is a collaboration between small performance adventures, a theatre company working with artists and participants in addiction recovery, and Cascade Creative Recovery, a peer led creative support organisation working to support recovery.

LMO welcomes back conductor Jonathan Small to conduct its March concert, which has a French thread running through it. The Belgian playwright Maurice Maeterlink, although Flemish, always wrote in French. Sibelius wrote incidental music to his 1892 play Pelléas et Mélisande in 1905. Music of great contrasts, it is perhaps best known for the opening movement At The Castle Gate which is the theme of the world's longest-running TV programme, The Sky at Night. Chopin was just 19 when he composed his Piano Concerto No.2. A year later he finished his formal education and went to live in Paris, eventually becoming

a French citizen. Chopin’s style was already becoming apparent and the majestic opening movement is followed by what one critic called a movement of “indescribable beauty”. The Rondo finale has all the technical demands you would expect of Chopin, which soloist Luke Jones will undoubtedly handle with aplomb. Finally LMO will perform Francis Poulenc’s delightful Sinfonietta. A pupil of Erik Satie, Poulenc was one of the group of young French composers known as “Les Six”. The four movement work is typical of his orchestral style and is light and full of dance rhythms, bringing the concert to a very French end.

2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY Sunday 24th March 2019, 4pm£5 (door)

2001: A Space Odyssey is a 1968 epic science fiction film produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick. The screenplay was written by Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke, and was inspired by Clarke's short story The Sentinal. A novel also called 2001: A Space Odyssey, written concurrently with the screenplay, was published soon after the film was released.

The film, which follows a voyage to Jupiter with the sentient computer HAL after the discovery of a mysterious black monolith affecting human evolution, deals with themes of existentialism, human evolution, technology, artiticial intelligence, and the possibility of extraterrestrial life. The film is noted for its scientifically accurate depiction of spaceflight, pioneering special effects, and ambiguous imagery. Sound and dialogue are used sparingly and often in place of traditional cinematic and narrative techniques. The soundtrack incorporates a number of pieces of classical music, among them Also Sprach Zarathustra by Richard Strauss, The Blue Danube by Johann Strauss II and works by Aram Khachaturian and Gyorgy Ligeti.

THE DEATH OF MR. LAZARESCU Monday 25th March 2019, 1pm£5 (door)

The Death of Mr. Lazarescu is a 2005 Romanian dark comedy film by director Cristi Puiu. In the film an old man (Ioan Fiscuteanu) is carried by ambulance from hospital to hospital all night long, as doctors keep refusing to treat him and send him away. The Death of Mr. Lazarescu enjoyed immediate critical acclaim, both at film festivals, where it won numerous awards, and after wider release, receiving enthusiastic reviews. However, the film did poorly in international box office. The film is planned to be the first in a series by Puiu called Six Stories from the Outskirts of Bucharest. In 2017 it was named the fifth best film of the 21st century so far, by The New York Times. The film is in Romanian with English subtitles.

TALES FROM THE GOLDEN AGETuesday 26th March 2019, 12:30pm£5 (door)

Tales from the Golden Age is a 2009 Romanian omnibus film. It was screened as part of the Un Certain Regard section at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival and is composed of six whimsical yet blackly comic short stories, each one set in the late communist period in Romania and based on urban myths from the time, reflecting the perspective of ordinary people. The title of the film refers to the alleged "Golden Age" (by communist propaganda) of the last 15 years of Nicolae Ceausescu's regime. Each episode concludes with "legend tells us ... ", each item being legend because, of course, no such thing could have happened during the "Golden Age". The film is in Romanian with English subtitles.

BERLIN: SYMPHONY OF A GREAT CITY Tuesday 26th March 2019, 7.30pm£10 (£5 students)

REFLEKTOR2:Jan Kopinski - saxophoneSteve Iliffe - piano

Walter Ruttmann’s definitive ‘city film’, Berlin: Symphony of a Great City (1927) is a dawn to dusk portrait of 1920s Berlin combining documentary with abstract and lyrical imagery. With Karl Freund's masterly camerawork and the film's assured editing, the film was hugely successful on its release, and that rarity - a film both popular and avant-garde.

Berlin: Symphony of a Great City contains moments of poetry that have seldom been equalled in film. The lyrical tone is set from the start with the opening shots of a dawn train journey towards the city. A subtle arching of time throughout the acts and seamless editing foreshadows the documentary style of later films. Beneath the immediate sense of objectivity to the film, there are touches of engaging warmth as Ruttman revels in the tapestry of human ingenuity, creativity and flow of life in the big city. The editing and sheer breadth of detail merges the documentary and visual narrative into a masterful film achievement.

Saxophonist Jan Kopinski and pianist Steve Iliffe perform their original score live to the film and follow its five acts of the daily diary of a city moving from the rhythmic to the abstract. Mirroring the pace and dazzle of the editing, the music responds to the human curiosity and the wonder of how we find ourselves in the modern world. Their composing and improvising skills, together with a sense of detail to sound and interaction in performance, bring real empathy to silent films. With new detail appearing each time they perform to it, the piece seems to create a subtle poignancy at every viewing.

Even without the film, this is music that swims in history, sombre and richly allusive CODA

HENRY V - THE KING’S KNICKERS (OR MADE IN ENGLAND) Wednesday 27th March, 6pmVenue: The Warehouse TheatreFree Admission

What do you think about when you think about England? Henry V kicking ass at Agincourt? Or great big M&S knickers? Part history, part story-set, and part straight-up rant, The King’s Knickers wilfully picks at the loose elastic of national identity, asking what a hard-drinking, battle-hardened hero king - and really big knickers - can tell us about being English today. Stephe Harrop is a contemporary storyteller, spitting out new words and playfully re-spinning old tales to try and make sense of a crazy world.

One of the punkiest storytellers I know. Really cheeky and always properly in the room and talking to actual people who get on buses and eat pizza and shout at the telly. Alys Torrance, Story Jam

This electroacoustic music concert, hosted by Dr Manuella Blackburn in collaboration with Kenneth Baird (European Opera Centre), will focus on electroacoustic repertoire that engages with musical borrowing.

All the works in the programme directly borrow, reference and cite from the world of opera, namely compositions from Rameau, Puccini and Leoncavallo.

Blackburn and Baird will introduce each work with a commentary providing insight into the original operatic context, borrowing behaviour, expression and significance. The concert and discussion aims to lay the foundation for further investigation and research into the fusing of electroacoustic music and opera.

THE LIVES OF OTHERS Thursday 28th March 2019, 3.30pm£5 (door)

The Lives of Others is a 2006 German drama film, marking the feature film debut of filmmaker Florian Henckel von Doonersmarck, about the monitoring of East Berlin residents by agents of the Stasi, the GDR's secret police.

Released 17 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, marking the end of the East German socialist state, it was the first notable drama film about the subject after a series of comedies such as Goodbye Lenin! and Sonnenalle. Many former East Germans were stunned by the factual accuracy of the film's set and atmosphere, which accurately portrayed a state that merged with West Germany and ceased to exist 16 years prior to the release. The film's authenticity was also considered notable given that the director grew up outside of East Germany and was only 16 when the Berlin Wall fell. The film is in German with English subtitles.

SONG OF THE SEA Saturday 30th March 2019, 11amVenue: The Warehouse Theatre£5 (door)

MOON Friday 29th March 2019, 1pm£5 (door)

Moon is a 2009 science fiction film directed by Duncan Jones and written by Nathan Parker from a story by Jones. The film follows Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell), a man who experiences a personal crisis as he nears the end of a three-year solitary stint mining helium-3 on the far side of the Moon. It was the feature debut of director Duncan Jones. Rockwell's performance found particular praise as did the film's scientific realism and plausibility. It won numerous film critic and film festival awards and was nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best British Film.

Song of the Sea is a 2014 animated fantasy film that follows the story of a 10-year-old Irish boy named Ben (David Rawle) who discovers that his mute sister Saoirse, whom he blames for the apparent death of his mother, is a selkie who has to free faerie creatures from the Celtic goddess Macha. The film, whose animation is hand-drawn, began production soon after the release of The Secret of Kells (2009), premiered at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival on 6 September in the "TIFF Kids" programme. The film had a limited release in certain countries, but received acclaim and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature at the 87th Academy Awards.

MUSIC FOR THE MIND AND SOUL: JOSH FEINBERG & KOUSIC SEN Saturday 30th March 2019, 1pmFree Admission(Please book at www.milapfest.com)

Josh Feinberg - sitarKousic Sen - tabla

Performing together for the first time, this concert features a unique collaboration between sitarist Josh Feinberg and tabla maestro Kousic Sen.

First introduced to classical music as a child, Feinberg trained in piano and bass violin (with Jazz studies) with Dan Weiss. Building upon his passion for improvisation, he was introduced to North Indian classical music and decided to continue his musical journey with the sitar. He trained under Vijaya Sundaram and Ust. Ali Akbar Khan, and at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston and has regularly toured as a sitarist across the USA, Canada, India and Europe. He has collaborated with a wide range of artists, including tap dancer Savion Glover, saxophonist Patrick Lamb and jazz drummer Richie Barshay. He is also a dedicated teacher and author.

The Music for the Mind and Soul concert series welcomes the return of its Artist in Residence, tabla artiste Kousic Sen, a percussionist sought after by musicians of the highest calibre. Having performed across the globe, he has earned the nickname “the Master Drummer from Kolkata”. His unique mastery of rhythm elevates concert experiences to new heights.

2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the first lunar landing - that epic voyage into the unknown marking a "giant leap for mankind." One way in which the Angel Field Festival will mark this historic event is with a collaboration between one of the UK's most innovative new music ensembles IMMIX and the composer Stephen Davismoon in partnership with Chatsworth Community College, Salford, to create a soundscape reflecting upon the beauty and delicacy of our home planet inspired by the words of astronauts.

27Physically exhilarating and touchingly poignant, Knot is the internationally acclaimed circus and dance work by Nikki Rummer and JD Broussé. These talented performers use hand-to-hand circus skills to tell the tale of an impossible choice: How can we be honest with ourselves without hurting those we love? Knot is a finely crafted theatrical journey through the struggles of commitment.

Created in collaboration with award-winning choreographer Ben Duke of Lost Dog Dance Company, Knot is a very modern affair told with delicate sensitivity through breath-taking acrobatics and heart wrenching dance.

Surprisingly funny. The true success of Nikki and JD’s Knot lies in the sensitive portrayal of a strong and dynamic human bondEve Ryan, North West End

ANDREW POPPY - HOARSE SONGS, A COSMIC OPERA IN 10 SONIC SCENESFriday 12th April 2019, 7.30pm£11.50

In the 1970s Andrew Poppy studied music at Goldsmiths College, London University where he began performing Glass, Riley, Cage and Feldman and composing. He later attended a summer school with John Cage and started col-laborating with other musical artists, choreogra-phers, theatre makers and performance artists. He signed to Trevor Horn and Paul Morley’s maverick pop label ZTT releasing his first album The Beating of Wings in 1985. He continues to make projects which evade classification.

Hoarse Songs is his latest album. It is also simulta-neously a performance and a cinematic 'happen-ing'. Previewed at the Barge House, London, in September 2018, the piece is an opera without opera singers or a traditional narrative. But the thematics develop around contemporary ideas and issues: the veiled intimacy of couples, the introspection of space and the fluidity of gender.

Half of Me is an emotive work that brings together a cross genre of dance and theatre performed by highly charismatic Bharatanatyam dancers with modern choreography, using a poignant story-line and spellbinding music by Praveen D. Rao, a versatile composer from India who creates a new genre of music, connecting classical music with modern sensibilities.

Singer, songwriter, painter, poet, activist and voice of a generation, Joni Mitchell is an essential part of the soundtrack to the 20th Century. She grew up with folk music in the 60's, she railed against injustice in the 70's - she turned her autobiography into song in the 80's and reinvented herself in the 90's. Court and Spark - The Joni Mitchell Songbook will take you on a musical journey that will probably mirror your own journey through life, from Ladies of the Canyon, Clouds, For the Roses, Blue and Court and Spark, to the cool, evocative sounds of The Hissing of Summer Lawns, Hejira, Mingus and Turbulent Indigo.

Inspired by Satinder Kaur Chohan’s play by the same title, Half of Me is based on a modern day theme which shares often unheard stories of young people born through Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) and draws parallels to a similar storyline based on motherhood from the famous Indian epic The Mahabharata.

LIVERPOOLJAZZ PRESENTS JEREMY SASSOON’S “RAY CHARLES PROJECT”Saturday 11th May 2019, 7.30pm£22 Originally launched at the Manchester Jazz Festival in 2009, Jeremy

Sassoon’s tribute to the music of Ray Charles captures the imagination of Jazz, Blues and Soul audiences alike. Since then the show has gone on to headline Ronnie Scott's, The Jazz Cafe, Bluesfest at the O2, Manchester Jazz Festival, Ribble Valley Jazz & Blues Festival and most recently the 2018 Wigan International Jazz Festival.

The late, great Ray Charles produced an immense repertoire of memorable tunes spanning several decades. Singer-pianist Sassoon reflects this with a set that include Ray Charles classics (Georgia on my Mind, What I’d Say, I Gotta Woman, Hallelujah I Love Her So) and some lesser known, but equally compelling musical gems from the catalogue (The Jealous Kind, I Don’t Need No Doctor, Hardhearted Hannah).

The Ray Charles Project always showcases the UK’s finest musicians and this concert, featuring a 17-piece band, is no exception. Mike Walker features on guitar (Impossible Gentlemen, Mike Gibbs, George Russell), multi-instrumentalist and local legend Steve Parry plays lead trumpet, and all arrangements come courtesy of tenor saxophonist and MD Iain Dixon (BBC Big Band, Michael Brecker, Bryan Ferry). The show is further lit up by Jeremy's stunning trio of backing vocalists, the “Jaelettes”.

This concert is presented by LiverpoolJazz.

Drum roll please - introducing not one but two soloists from the LMO, a new work from a member of the LMO and all conducted by two young conductors from the RNCM, Andrew Casey and Mark Edwards. Mozart’s ominous overture to Don Giovanni will be followed by his joyous Exultate Jubilate sung by Louise Dickinson. Next comes the première of a new work from LMO violinist Wendy Dickinson dedicated to the memory of LMO's much-missed colleague John Cook, member and Treasurer of the orchestra for over 40 years. Principal oboist, Michael Shennan, will then perform one of Albinoni’s many oboe concertos. Finally, to bring this aptly named concert to an end, Haydn’s penultimate symphony, No.103, known as the “Drum Roll” because of the opening roll on the timpani, is choc full of Haydn’s normal liveliness and melodic invention.

2019 marks the 20th anniversary of John Etheridge’s Sweet Chorus debut album. The band was formed by guitar legend John Etheridge as a personal tribute to Stephane Grappelli, arguably the greatest jazz violinist of the 20th Century. Etheridge accompanied Grappelli on numerous world tours between 1976 and ’81 and appeared on four discs, including two with Yehudi Menuhin and Grappelli – the famous partnership which had such phenomenal success in the 70s.

When Grappelli died at the age of nearly 90, Etheridge, who had played with the great man at his last concert in England (Cheltenham Jazz Festival ’96), was moved to pay personal tribute. Sweet Chorus was formed initially just for a short tour, but became so immediately successful that it has continued to this day.

The music is inspired by the classic sounds of Django Reinhardt and Grappelli, whose legendary partnership galvanised European Jazz. But in the spirit of these two giants, who were forever looking forward, this is no slavish imitation.

Etheridge and Garrick are musicians of broad experience and sensibility and they bring their range to the table here – so expect a dazzling and varied display of acoustic jazz rather than ‘Hot Club’ mimicry. The repertoire consists of a mixture of standards, American swing, Latin American and original compositions played with wit, humour and virtuosity and propelled by the propulsive drive of Kelbie and Crowdy. Another feature of the concert is the affectionate and often funny reminiscences of John’s time with Grappelli – a man who was eccentric, inspired, and highly individual.
