The Camp Fire Promise

Young people want to shape the world. Camp Fire provides

spark, lift their voice, and discover who they are. In Camp Fire, it begins now.

2017 was another year of great progress for our Inland Northwest Camp Fire Council. We completed a 7-month long Strategic Planning Process. The Strategic Plan was adopted by the Board of Directors and identifies three priority areas: building a stronger business model, harnessing the potential of our camps, and helping more youth find their Spark. We are already making great strides in all three of these areas.

Camp Sweyolakan had a great summer. Thanks to many generous donors we were able to acquire a new wood chipper, chainsaw, hypoid saw and many new hand tools. We also replaced the old Kubota with a new Artic Cat Utility Vehicle. We added a “new” dock to the Echo Unit, installed a new pump for the water system and replaced over 50’ of sewer line. Camp was also the recipient of a 1988, 17-foot Bayliner Capri runabout that will save a lot of wear and tear on the Carbon Copy when transporting only a couple/few people between Camp and the Landing.

Permitting for the Dart-Lo Lodge renovation has taken longer than anticipated. The final plan to be submitted to the County is for a new septic system that services both the Lodge and the Flush. Construction is expected to resume soon and the renovation is expected to be completed before the start of the 2018 season.

A new focus on procuring grants resulted in grants awarded from the Carl M Hansen Foundation, the Chase Youth Foundation, the U.S. Bank Foundation, the Community Building Foundation, the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust, the National Resources Conservation Service, and the Inland Northwest Community Foundation, totaling $164,000. In addition, Spokane County United Way increased their funding to Camp Fire!

The American Camp Association made their on-site visit to Camp Sweyolakan this summer and renewed our Accreditation by the ACA. Less than one third of the camps in the nation meets ACA standards and receive Accreditation.

One of our Business Plan Strategies is to seek out more Community Partnerships. Our Community Partnership Program at Camp Dart-Lo expanded this year. In addition to children from the Martin Luther King Jr. Family Outreach Center, children from the West Central Community Center and the Southwest Spokane Community Center also attended Day Camp at Camp Dart-Lo. In addition, we partnered with Camp Twigs, a day camp program for children with Type I Diabetes. They had such a great experience that they want to make Camp Dart-Lo their permanent home.

Volunteers continue to be the backbone of our Council. Countless hours of time and talent are given to serving on the Board and Committees, maintenance at both camps, organizing the Archives at the Camp Fire Office, fundraising, professional design for our Lodge renovation, facilitating a Strategic Plan process with Board Members and community leaders, leading our Clubs, working in the kitchen or in program areas at camp, or serving as a buddy.

Camp enrollments continued to grow. 148 children attended Gypsy Week at Camp Sweyolakan, the largest one-week attendance in many years. A new Mini-Camp, 2 night-3 day experience, was offered with 30 campers attending. Heavy smoke in the area forced us to cancel this year’s Women’s Retreat. Camp Dart-Lo attendance grew by almost 30%. Hours were expanded to better serve working parents and an 8th week of Day Camp was offered.

Our Sustaining Membership Campaign continues to grow. The annual Campaign started 3 years ago to provide support for Camp Fire program costs that program fees alone don’t cover. This last year 139 donors gave over $55,000 to support Camp Fire programs. That was an increase of more than 50% over what was donated in 2016.

I cannot express my heart-felt thanks enough to the staff, Board, and countless volunteers that continue to make Camp Fire a relevant organization that is impacting the lives of countless youth across the Inland Northwest each year. I look forward to an amazing year in 2018 as we continue to change hearts and minds through your dedication and passion.

OVERNIGHT CAMP

Camp Sweyolakan provides an opportunity for kids to unplug from technology, explore the natural worldaround them, and connect with their peers in a rustic outdoor setting. Campers learn invaluable life skillsin an inclusive and diverse community. Our progressive education model continues to provide growthexperiences in activities like swimming, boating, nature awareness, outdoor cooking, crafts, archery, leadership and more. Here are some highlights from our year:

• Camp relations on the lake continue to strengthen and a primary benefit of this is that Camp Sweyolakan campers going into the 6th grade and higher are again enjoying the opportunity to overnight at Mica Bay Boater’s Park (formally known as State Park).

• The Dining Hall received a structural upgrade pre-season with the complete rebuild of the west end staircase. Campers now enjoy a safer entry into meals and activities with 5 strong supports bearing their weight. Thank you to Steve and Lori Howard for your time and expertise.

• Spark Time exposed campers to new activities and allowed them the opportunity to learn new skills that they might otherwise not have known they enjoyed. Sparks included: beach yoga, nature exploration, fire building, hand lettering, dream catchers, camp songs, soccer, and many more.

• 21 junior and senior high school students participated in Camp Sweyolakan’s Leadership Development Program (Counselor in Training) with 7 graduating this summer.

• The Kuktu (small canoe) returned to the waters of Lake Coeur d’Alene this summer. Out for repairs since 2013, this 1939 acquisition needed extensive repairs. A special thanks goes out to the Canoe Restoration Committee, Mike & Lorinda Travis, and Fred & Teri Akins, for their hard work on getting this canoe back in the water for the enjoyment of campers now and in the years to come.

DAY CAMP

Camp Dart-Lo offers youth the same outdoor experiences campers would receive at overnight camp but in a day camp environment. Day Campers participate in age appropriate activities like environmental education, swimming, cookouts, crafts and archery. Like Camp Fire’s other programs, our staff focuses on youth development and leadership. Here are some highlights from our year:

• 31 Counselor Assistants joined staff members in providing unforgettable experiences to our campers this season. This leadership development opportunity gives teens hands-on experience leading young campers through the fun and learning of camp!

• Keller Williams joined with Camp Dart-Lo to provide a day of service - RED DAY - in May, bringing over 70 realtors out to the camp to re-gravel the lot, open the pool, thin tree groves, maintain trails and build flower boxes.

• Whitworth University Community Building Day in September brought the Whitworth University Football Team to shut down the pool complex, clean up camp, and prepare for winter.

• 60 youth from the Martin Luther King Jr. Outreach Center participated in camper sessions funded by Spokane County United Way. In addition, we expanded our Community Center partnerships, welcoming kids from West Central Community Center and Southwest Spokane Community Center to camp this summer.

• Coordinated by one of the Council’s upcoming Wohelo recipients, Maggie Bailey, the Third Annual Kids’ Off-Road Triathlon grew by 11 youth athletes. 39 participants swam, biked and ran through camp with the support of 25 volunteers (photographers, lifeguards, trail monitors, finish line helpers and parking attendants) who all cheered the youth on! This year saw an increase in event sponsors and brought in $1,314.25 for the event.

Camp FireCLUBS

Our Club program is small group mentoring led by volunteer leaders who work with Camp Fire curriculum which follows five trails: the Trail to Knowing Me, Family & Community, Creativity, the Environment and the Future. It is programming done during out-of-school-time hours. Our clubs also go on field trips and do many community service projects. Here are some highlights from our year:

• Camp Fire hosted a hot cocoa station at First Night Spokane near Riverfront Park.• 128 club kids sold 19,325 packages of candy to support Camp Fire programs, fund club

activities and earn their way to camp.• In March we celebrated Camp Fire’s 107th Birthday at River Park Square Mall.• Clubs participated in the National Art Experience. The medium was paint. Our club

members made different painting projects – ranging from painting on canvas, painting on glass and other mediums.

• Clubs participated in the St. Paddy’s Day Parade, the Valleyfest Parade and the Jr. Lilac Parade with a float built by club volunteers. The float won first place in our division at the Jr. Lilac Parade, for the second year in a row.

• Club kids stuffed plastic Easter eggs with dog treats to help Spokanimal get ready for their annual Easter egg hunt for dogs in the community.

• Over 40 blankets were made for Project Linus. The blankets were delivered to the local chapter to be given to children in need.

• Fly-Up and Grand Council Fire were held in May. Youth going into Kindergarten, 3rd grade, 6th grade and 9th grade flew up into the next program level.

• Candy Camporee was held in June for those youth who sold 375+ packages of candy.
