1The Cambridge Executive MBA is a unique 20 month degree programme for senior executives. Delivered over 16 weekends and four week-long blocks, the programme is attended by people from all over the world and enables participants to continue working whilst earning a Cambridge degree.

The University of Cambridge has created this programme because we believe that whilst business and management education for junior and middle managers is generally very good, senior executives (including company owners, partners and directors) have not traditionally been well served. The Cambridge Executive MBA has been carefully designed to develop the hard and soft skills, and provide the practical, relevant knowledge necessary for senior executives responsible for leading their organisations.

2 3Programme objective and course structure

Corporate executives are typically employed, during the early stages of their career, on the basis of having a particular functional expertise or skill. However, as they progress through the organisation, this functional expertise becomes less important. At higher levels in the organisation, executives need to have developed a broad, comprehensive understanding of all the constituent functions in their organisation, not just their own. They need to have a strong understanding of the global business environment, in order to make well-informed strategic decisions for their organisation. They need to have well developed ‘soft skills’, in order to manage and lead others effectively. And they need to be part of a strong, global peer network that will provide the connectivity and advice to help them advance in their careers. This is not a typical MBA programme - the Cambridge Executive MBA has been carefully and deliberately designed to meet the needs of senior executives.

Core courses It is critical that those responsible for running an organisation have a thorough knowledge of its various component parts. The Cambridge Executive MBA provides a strong overview of the principal functional areas of an organisation. We ensure that our participants

Eben UptonTechnical DirectorBroadcom and Executive Director, Raspberry Pi Foundation, UK “The programme gave me a framework within which I could understand the challenges that were facing the Foundation, particularly around marketing, scaling and working capital flow. At both Braodcom and the Foundation, the EMBA gave me more confidence in negotiations and helped me think creatively in terms of structuring business deals.”

“I was surprised by how much I learnt about myself and how I interact with others. My weekly updates with our Chief Financial Officer are more insightful than previously. My own management practice has improved; I extract more value from team members and as such I have become a more effective manager”.

understand the role of different business departments, are familiar with their key tools and methodologies, appreciate the way in which they operate in the wider organisational context, and are fully conversant with the

language and terminology they use.

Global businessThe programme structure and content is designed to meet the needs of global business leaders, and attracts participants from around the world. Part of the programme is delivered overseas through an International Business Study Trip. The country visited is carefully selected according to current economic conditions and its relevance to the needs of the current class. The course covers internationalisation strategies and the class meets local business leaders and government officials, and visits leading domestic and international organisations to understand at first hand the varied responses to globalisation.

Practical We are committed to delivering a programme which is relevant and practical so you can apply your newly acquired knowledge and skills as soon as you return to work after a weekend session. Each course aims to provide ideas, insights and frameworks that will help you be more

effective in your organisation. We also offer a team consulting project, comprising a week-long group project where you work in a small team for a specific client on a live project. Client companies typically implement the recommendations and strategies developed during these projects.

CustomisableThe University of Cambridge is celebrated for its small class teaching and very personal approach to learning. The Cambridge Executive MBA programme can be tailored to your particular needs or can focus on subjects of specific interest through a variety of electives, as well as through an extended individual project supervised by a member of the University of Cambridge’s faculty.

Professional and personal development The Professional Development programme comprises a suite of discrete professional training modules, designed to impart critical practical and transferable skills. More importantly, a significant amount of time is allocated to Personal Development which focuses on the improvement of ‘soft’ skills, such as cultural intelligence, diplomacy and reflexivity which are critical to effective management of oneself and others. Participants are also able to work with executive coaches on a one-to-one basis.

Outcomes We measure the success of the programme by the outcome of its participants. Participants themselves have diverse requirements of the programme and measure whether or not these have been achieved, by a variety of outcomes. Some feel they have become better managers, some have achieved promotion, and others have started their own businesses. What can be said of all our alumni is that they have achieved the goals they set themselves and have generated greater wealth or success for themselves, and for the organisations for which they work.

16 Why Cambridge?

Cambridge is a world renowned seat of learning and is synonymous with research and teaching excellence.

The University has 190,000 alumni, 18,000 students and 5,000 academic staff, including numerous Nobel Prize winners and many internationally renowned figures. As a Cambridge Executive MBA you become a lifelong member of this powerful network. Cambridge is also Europe’s leading entrepreneurial and hightech cluster.
