1800 Presidential Election Results

"Democratic-Republican Thomas Jefferson defeated Federalist John Adams by a margin of seventy-three to sixty-five electoral votes in the presidential election of 1800. When presidential electors cast their votes, how-ever, they failed to distinguish between the office of president and vice president on their ballots. Jefferson and his running mate Aaron Burr each received seventy-three votes. With the votes tied, the election was thrown to the House of Representatives as required by Article II, Section 1 of the U.S. Constitution. There, each state voted as a unit to decide the election.

Still dominated by Federalists, the sitting

Congress loathed to vote for Jefferson—their

partisan nemesis. For six days starting on

February 11, 1801, Jefferson and Burr es-

sentially ran against each other in the

House. Votes were tallied over thirty times,

yet neither man captured the necessary ma-

jority of nine states. Eventually, Federalist

James A. Bayard of Delaware, under intense

pressure and fearing for the future of the Un-

ion, made known his intention to break the

impasse. As Delaware’s lone representative,

Bayard controlled the state’s entire vote. On

the thirty-sixth ballot, Bayard and other Fed-

eralists from South Carolina, Maryland, and

Vermont cast blank ballots, breaking the

deadlock and giving Jefferson the support of

ten states, enough to win the presidency."

Dear Friends:

For many years between my yard and my neighbor’s yard there has been a red fence. It was there when

I moved in over thirteen years ago. I have seen many neighbors come and go, but the fence remained.

On the advent of past spring seasons, I used to think to myself "I am going to replace that fence with a

vinyl one as it has seen better days." I had thought about this for at least ten years but never took the

time. Recently some strong winds knocked the fence over and I was forced to replace it. So one evening,

I began to dismantle the fence, and not being very handy I knew that it would take a long time. Fortu-

nately my sister, brother-in-law, and their children came to visit and upon seeing my state of calamity,

came to my assistance. Something that would have taken me hours to accomplish alone was done in

about thirty minutes. However, the process of building a new fence is a lot more laborious than the proc-

ess of breaking it down.

This incident made me reflect on the growth of the Calumet Chapter of the IMA. While I certainly try, I

don’t know that we thank you enough for being members of the Calumet Chapter of the IMA. I am glad

that you have continued to support the chapter, and continue to refer like minded professionals who

may benefit from membership. Unfortunately we see many people come for a year or two and get dis-

tracted. However, we really want everyone to stay and find value in our chapter, so if there is anything

we can do to make the experience better for you please let us know. You can always e-mail me at

[email protected]. As we plan “Our Biggest Night of the Year” on Tuesday March 19, 2012 at Zuni’s

in Crown Point Indiana, we are seeking 4 volunteers to take part in a Q and A session with our members.

We are also looking for some door prizes, so if you can help us out please let me know.

Our November tradition is a two hour ethics presentation that will meet the CPE requirement for all the

holders of CMA certification. It is our hope that you will join us on Tuesday November 13, 2012 at

Theo’s in Highland Indiana as this will be the last regular meeting of 2012. Prior to enjoying a wonderful

Thanksgiving meal with your family, consider joining your fellow members of the Calumet Chapter of the

IMA for a wonderful meal and ethics presentation. Together I know that we can build a future for our

chapter that will reach the sky.

Thank you for your Continued Support.

The Institute of Managerial Accountants (IMA) represents more than 60,000 accountants and financial professionals worldwide. The majority of these professionals work inside businesses and organiza-tions. They comprise the essential elements of financial management, organizational development, integrity, ethics and governance, and short and long term business goal management.

The Certified Management Accountant Credential (CMA) offered by the IMA is an advanced profes-sional certification that reflects the necessary accounting and financial management skills demanded in today’s business environment.

The CMA exam was first offered in 1972. Today over 30,000 accountants and financial professionals have earned this highly recognized and global title.

Professionals who have earned the CMA hold key management roles at top multinational firms and offer their companies the real world relevance, critical knowledge, and leadership abilities to compete in today’s dynamic global business environment.
