Debra Hintz' paintings are instantly recognizable. She has won numerous awards over the years for her unique and colorful palette knife work including the prestigious Gold Medal Award from CAL in 2012. Her paintings are powerful and always evoke a mood.

Debra has also been a dedicated member of CAL and served on the Board of Directors for 5 years. We are very excited to have her demonstrate for us on Tuesday, June 18, 2013!

Cezanne's Cool Sunlit Path

Debra was born and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan and discovered her affinity for art in early childhood. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Western Michigan University and moved to Los Angeles in 1985 to pursue a career in graphic design. While doing so, she came to the realization that fine art was still an equally vital and integral part of her life that could not be stifled.

Cool Refuge

While she moved forward in her graphic design career, Debra continued her fine art education at Mission: Renaissance where she studied for five years under Joe Severino. There, she learned the methods and skills of the Renaissance and Impressionist painters. This education gave her a strong traditional foundation in drawing and painting and it was during this time that Debra discovered her love for landscape. Her strongest influences are Courbet, Cezanne, Inness, Monet, and Van Gogh. Debra paints strictly in oils using palette knives and builds up many layers of paint on the canvas to create her emotionally-driven paintings.

Shadow Days

Fade to Red

Debra’s work is held in private collections across the country and has been shown in juried exhibitions and group shows in Southern California and Arizona. She had her first solo exhibition at Infusion Gallery in downtown Los Angeles and is currently represented by Red Brick Gallery in Ventura, CA. Debra is also a member of the California Art Club, Oil Painters of America, and Women Painters West.

Journeys Open Exhibit and Membership reportby Ken Ronney, Membership Chair

The response to our Open Exhibit Journeys by current and new members was excellent with189 entries submitted by 74 artists. This included paintings and drawings in oil, acrylic, watercolor, and ink, plus sculptures in stone, glass, bronze, mixed media, and several other categories. A total of 27 new artists joined and one former member rejoined CAL as part of their entry to the exhibit. New members include residents from as far away as Alaska, Ohio, Arizona and Manitoba, Canada.

Our Juror, Robert Burridge, faced an imposing task: He had to winnow the selected pieces down to under 100 to fit the gallery space. The final count of accepted works, from 50 artists, was 89. Eighteen of that group were new members, one was a current associate, and one was a former member who rejoined. All four of the out-of-state residents were selected toexhibit one or two paintings.

With the addition of the new members, our total membership is 170, the largest in the last ten years, and probably the largest ever. One of the goals of the Open Exhibit was to bring both new members and new vibrancy to our group, andwe believe we have succeeded.

The jurying process for this exhibit was an additional opportunity for any member to become an exhibiting member of CAL. Anyone who was selected by the juror has become an Exhibiting Member. The following new and current associates have become Exhibiting Members:

Nancy Angelini Crawford, Adria Becker, Maggie Cabral, Dan Cashman, Laara Cassells, Susie Choi, Karren DeGorricho, Stevie Denny, Candace Doub, Lynne Fearman, Andi Gonzalez, James Goodridge, Lesley Goren, Tricia Kaman, Kent Lauer, Susan M. Melly, Rea Nagel, Dody Rogers, Julie Snyder, and Ruben Yadao.

In addition, the following new members will be eligible to participate in our next jurying session: Lana Blades, David Hasse, Arline Helm, Teresa LeClerc, Regine Legler, Ginger Linden, Lyle Everett Rushing, Eugene Seregin, Margie Schunk and Carmen Stiffelman.

Thank you to everyone who entered the Open Exhibit, congratulations to those who will be exhibiting, and a special welcome to all our new and returning members.

Pastimes of a Lifetime!!CAL Member (and Sponsor) Linda Wehrli's Pastimes of a Lifetime has been extremely busy lately! On Monday, June 3, 2013, she will be having a reception for her student art show at Carter Sexton located at 5308 Laurel Canyon Blvd., North Hollywood, CA 91607. The show will run from June 1–June 7, 2013.

Over one hundred student drawings and paintings from Pastimes for a Lifetime were on exhibit over Mother's Day Weekend, May 11 and 12, 2013. Students, ages 5-1/2 to 84 years old, displayed works in graphite, charcoal, oil pastel, chalk pastel, watercolor, acrylics and oils. Students received a Certificate of Merit signed by the Rotary Club president, with photos taken with their work, for their portfolios. A complete photo album of work from the show can be viewed online at the school's Facebook Fan Page for families to enjoy and share.

https://www.facebook.com/PastimesInc

Although student paintings were for exhibit only, many received inquiries from guests asking if their work were for sale. This is so exciting for students. It gives their confidence and self-esteem a big boost.

This show has been hosted by the Studio City/Sherman Oaks Rotary Club for over 30 years at Moorpark Park, Studio City. Booth fees go directly to charities supported by the club including the Braille Institute and women's shelters.

Linda Wehrli is the founder/instructor of Pastimes for a Lifetime, Inc., Art and Piano School. She has been teaching art and piano since 1989 and has participated in this Mother's Day Weekend Show since the 1990s. For more information on Linda and her school, please visit her website at www.pastimesinc.com

Dot-ism

By Marjorie Sarnat

Dots create appealing textures in paintings. Whether you work representationally or not, think of dots as bits of color your eye will mix.

Dot Your Eyes

Study shading by painting a simple subject like a pear or a face by using light and dark dots to show form.

Work onto a middle-toned surface and think of your dots as short brushstrokes. Use light and dark values to depict main lights and shadows. Mingle dots to create morevalues. Spacing dots closer and further apart creates additional values. Use any colors if their values are right. Your subject will look surprisingly realistic from a distance because dots mix optically.

Angelo Franco creates a contemporary version of the style in Floral Abstraction Tangier (pictured, bottom right).

Original Aboriginals

Australian Aboriginal Dot Paintings have slightly raised dots painted over flat earth-colored shapes. The artists depict animals and nature, using color symbolically: yellow = sun, brown = earth, red = sand, white = clouds and sky.

Heavy paper or any board works well. Avoid springy canvas. Using acrylic paint, cover your substrate in large areas of flat color. Apply uniform sized dots over background areas, letting them flow across areas to unify the composition. Add smaller dots for details, larger dots for emphasis. Concentric dotted circles and dotted outlines around shapes are typical of Aboriginal Dot Paintings. The paint application itself will cause the dots to be slightly raised.

Good dot-maker tools are backs of brushes and pointed-tip squeeze bottles of paint. Experiment to find the tools and paint viscosity that works best. Gloss dots over matte backgrounds add drama. Adapt this indigenous style through your own subject matter and colors.

If you haven’t thought of dot-painting until now, it can be a fresh new way to approach your art.

Marjorie is the author of the Art Studio Secrets series of books, available in paperback and eBook formats. Her website is www.sarnatart.com.

Quinton Bemiller is a painter based in Chinatown, Los Angeles.

He received his Masters in Fine Art from Claremont's Graduate

Painting Program. He has recently demonstrated for one of

CAL’s monthly meetings. He says, "My paintings are created in

layers of subsequent events that unfold into stories. These

stories are not literally rendered but are alluded to poetically

through color and form. Spatial effects, sensations of time and

suggestions of physical environments exist in my paintings. I

create scenes that live in my imagination, yet are inspired by

the naturalism and reality of our world."
