Dear Fellow Questers:
The holidays are behind us, and I assume we are all busy with Questers activities, and looking forward to the
Spring Convention meeting, Friday, April 11th!
In his inaugural address on January 20, 1961, President, John F. Kennedy said, “Ask not what your country
can do for you —- ask what you can do for your country.” … This is one of the greatest sayings ever! Let’s
now apply this to our great organization and say “What can you do for Questers?” It is somewhat alarming
to hear about dwindling membership in our great organization, and we hear about many clubs, organizations
or businesses that have not kept a close eye on or kept up with the pace of the rapidly changing world and are
also losing members. We cannot continue to rely on our past successes, our laurels, our memories, or the
great people in our organization before us. We must change and keep up with the times and BUILD! Please
consider stepping up to help your local chapter, attend your chapter meetings, do a presentation on your col-
lections, exhibit your passion, be a volunteer, become an officer, et al! Thanks to our Nominations committee,
Ginger Williams, Doris Palmer and Carolyn Click who have been hard at work filling the slate for new offi-
cers to be elected at the Spring Convention meeting. Thank you to Phyllis Sylvester from Granite Mountain
#1250 for taking the Historian position, but I am still looking for someone to fill the appointed position of
Cactus Bloom Editor, and hope someone will step up and assume this position!
Our International organization is working harder than ever to provide value and experience to your member-
ship with an up-to-date website and communications and an exciting International Convention coming up
April 24 through April 28, 2014 in Grand Rapids Michigan! I hope you are considering attending this year,
as the programs and tours all sound exciting! The registration forms are in the Quester Quarterly Winter
2013 issue, which was either mailed to you or is available on the International website,
www.questers1944.org Password and User ID are “Heritage”. Ask any member who has attended a
convention(s), and they will tell you, quite enthusiastically, that it was a wonderful experience!
Thank you to all who attended our Fall Council meeting, and who will be attending the Friendship Luncheon
on Friday, February 21 at Phoenix Country Club. We are fortunate and excited to have a very special pro-
gram for you ….. Craig Harris (Susie Harris’ husband) will be doing a presentation on his famous father,
Robert G. Harris’ career and artwork. Harris was a famous illustrator and learned art at the feet of early
masters such as Harvey Dunn and George Bridgman. He illustrated everything from crude pulps to refined
magazines for women. In 1933 he began doing colorful paintings of Western story covers for the magazines
flourishing at that time, followed by story illustrations for the leading women’s magazines, Saturday Evening
Post, Mc Calls, Good Housekeeping, Redbook, Cosmopolitan and Ladies Home Journal, as well as work for
national accounts, such as Coca Cola. Later he became a portrait artist. The Friendship luncheon is a wonderful opportunity to invite friends and acquaintances who are potential new Questers so please help grow our organization by extending an invitation to them.

Verde Valley #1467 (Camp Verde/Cottonwood/Sedona)
This fall the Verde Valley members teamed up to form
the Brickettes, a committee with the sole mission of re-
storing the fireplace at the Historic Hance house to its
original 1917 condition! The Bricketts stripped four lay-
ers of paint off, brick-by-brick, revealing the beautiful
original clay-fired red brick. During Fort Verde Days,
the Verde Valley Questers, dressed in period clothing,
showed off their hard work to the public. The Verde
Valley Questers have devoted many hours to the preser-
vation and restoration of the Historic Hance House.
This year they hope to refinish the original Douglas fir
wood floors.
Hayden’s Ferry #1245 (Tempe)
Hayden’s Ferry #1245 recently completed in-
stalling 13 room darkening shades at the Peter-
sen House Museum. Funds for this project came
from our seminars that we conduct every Febru-
ary. Over the past 20 years, we have upholstered
furniture, refinished floors, purchased antique
kitchen utensils, wallpaper, lamps, Wilton wool
rugs and copper trays for plants on the porch.
Our next goal is to select wall paper for the din-
ing room in the appropriate period. This will be
funded by the upcoming seminars held in Febru-
ary. For more info on the seminars, you may call
Julie Ramsey at 480-838-2414. A new Christ-
mas tree was purchased for the second floor and
the chapter made ornaments. The house is open
on a limited basis. If any Quester group would
like a tour of the house, please contact Mary
Miller at 480-831-6649. We are looking forward
to celebrating our 20th anniversary on March
11th..

The new officers will be installed at the State
Spring meeting.
We wish to thank each one who agreed to become
a candidate for an office of the Arizona Organiza-
tion of the Questers. Our appreciation is also ex-
tended to Lois Newton, state parliamentarian, who
served as our advisor.

Lost Dutchman #1244 (Leisure World/
Mesa) It has been a busy time since we reconvened in No-
vember with the meeting held at the home of Julie
Roering. Show and tell of antique jewelry by mem-
bers proved most interesting. Plans were finalized
for participation in the Leisure World 40th Anniver-
sary Activity Fair on November 15. President Bea
Ball arranged a most attractive display table with
contributions from members of antique crocheted
table cloths, depression glass sugar and creamer,
photographs, a family heirloom christening dress
from the 1880’s, old jewelry, and books on antique
clocks and kitchen wares. The chapter scrapbook
was available to peruse. Much interest was shown
by members of the community. In December Iris
Van arranged a bus trip to Phoenix where we toured
the Rosson House and Doll House Museum at Heri-
tage Square followed by lunch at the Rose and
Crown Pub. Members and guests had a most inter-
esting and enjoyable time. We are sad to report the
recent death of Paula Rudy Gordon, a relatively new
and enthusiastic member. She will be missed.
Desert Sage #1287 (Phoenix)
In November, Desert Sage #1287 members toured
the Sanderson Ford Museum, and then joined the
Phoenix Firebirds #629 on December 17th for their
annual Holiday luncheon and auction.
Desert Sage members also traveled to Wickenburg
on January 8th and joined Wickenburg Pioneer
#1495 members for a Ghost Tour and lunch at the
Golden Nugget Restaurant.
They are looking forward to hosting the Friendship
Luncheon at Phoenix Country Club on February 21.

fascinating presen-
tation on ―Human
Adornment Since
Cavemen‖
Thumb Butte # 1284 (Prescott) Thumb Butte has been very active during 2013 in the P&R arena.
The Antiques on the Square events that our chapter sponsors bi-
annually have generated enough funds to allow a $7500 contribution
to Sharlot Hall Museum’s ―Porter Engine‖ restoration project. The
small locomotive was once used at the Congress Mine. The engine
will be moved to the museum’s new entrance location – in time for
Prescott’s Sesquicenten-
nial celebration.

Also benefiting from
our antique show
profits (and also in time for the 200 year celebration) is Pres-
cott’s historical Citizens Cemetery, the first cemetery in
Prescott and the oldest in Territorial Arizona. A $2000 dona-
tion has been made to the Yavapai Cemetery Association,
which will be used to repair the white bronze grave markers
at Citizens.
Thumb Butte has enjoyed a spurt of new member growth and
renewed enthusiasm for doing the important work of
Questers – plus having fun and learning, too. Our educa-
tional programs have included topics such as miners’ candle-
sticks, an evening with one of Arizona’s first Culturekeepers
and Prescott citizen Elizabeth Ruffner who presented an
―Arizona Territorial Review‖, a presentation by Pat Ireland-
Williams author of the recently published book
―Underground Prescott‖, and a trip to the nearby Bronze
Smith gallery and foundry, where exquisite bronze sculptures
are created. TB Questers are definitely making a difference
in Prescott!

Pleasures 'N Pastimes, #1286 (W Phx)
Our chapter lost our devoted member and president, Ruth
Catalano, on August 19, 2013.
Ruth shared her numerous collections with us over the
years from paper dolls to quilts to her Christmas vil-
lage. She even taught us CPR (just in case). She is loved
and missed.
In September, we met at Dorothy Houdeks' home for her
presentation on advertising gimmicks.
She gave us the history & showed her collection including
Coca Cola World War II airplane spotter playing cards,
Fuller Brush letter opener, Shell Oil fan, American West
Airlines frisbee
and yoyo, First Federal Savings piggy bank and APS
Reddy Killowatt. Members brought their own examples.
In November, we met at the home of member Jane
Rigby. Her granddaughter, Jessica, presented us with the
history of women super heroes of comic books. She made
us super women glasses and our refreshments were deco-
rated with super heroes. We all look at these
gals differently than we had before.
We look forward to learning and sharing this
new year.

Sedona #1337 (Sedona)
Sedona Questers have had a busy new season since the
first meeting in October. We learned about mourning jewelry in
its various forms over many decades. We then were treated to a
history of the sewing machine from its early development when
women were discouraged from using them (it was not lady-like
for a woman to use any machine) to the present day when almost
every household has one, even if it’s not being used. December
brought a potluck salad luncheon, a white elephant gift exchange,
and a Christmas quiz…who were the seven characters and what
did they do in ―A Partridge In a Pear Tree‖?
The Chapter is excited about supporting the Sedona
Heritage Museum in its acquisition and restoration of the hundred
year old building that is the only surviving part of the Old Sedona
western town movie set. This ―Telegraph Office‖ will be used as
an educational exhibit interpreting Sedona’s rich movie history.

Arizona Questers continue to support the Opportunity
Drawing in a big way! The AZ State P & R fund is
$1,337 wealthier thanks to the generosity of members who
purchased tickets and donated raffle items.
Nineteen chapters donated items such as a jewelry chest
filled with treasures and $100.00 in cash. A Waterford
biscuit jar was a big hit as well as a collection of vintage
Las Vegas gaming items. Always welcome are donated
items from individual Questers. For example, Buzz New-
ton thoughtfully gave us his beautiful book, America’s
National Parks, with official stamp issues.
