Welcome to summer! So, have you finished enough jigsaw puzzles, have you played enough games, have you read enough books, have you binged enough TV? One thing we gardeners never get enough of is GARDENING! My life has been all about our new turtle island in our koi pond. We kept buying more turtles as we thought they had escaped only to find them hiding under driftwood in the pond. Now we are enjoying the antics of three turtles. We are also watching our resident squirrel, stretching and hanging upside down to eat the jelly put out for our birds. I hope your yard is providing you with beauty and wildlife wonder. Please enjoy this newsletter with inspiring photos from your fellow members gardens. As Bella Collina is closed with no plans to open anytime soon, our June Installation Luncheon is officially cancelled. Parliamentary Impact of Coronavirus from Greg Pokorski, CGCI Parliamentarian “In order to keep our organizations functioning, some actions may need to be taken that are notin strict compliance with bylaws. I share the inputof a paid professional full-time parliamentarianthat the fundamental concerns in any organizationand with respect to parliamentary issues are: 1)does everyone know what’s going on?, and 2) areanyone’s rights being violated? If everyone knows what is going on andnobody’s rights are being violated, then it maynot matter that all the I’s are not dotted and all theT’s are not crossed. If organizations need to takeemergency actions that are not provided for intheir bylaws or are contrary to bylaws, be sure tobe transparent and communicate fully to the boardand/or membership, as applicable, and documenteverything you do, with a record of any such actionsgoing into the minutes for the next meeting.”

From Launa Gould, SCGC Parliamentarian: The Executive Committee met by Zoom on May 20, 2020 and due to the COVID-19 restrictions with circumstances not of our making and out of our control, some actions were taken that are not in strict compliance with our bylaws (voting in person for officers). Executive Officer positions remain the same as last year except for Secretary. The nominating committee presented an uncontested slate of officers. The new board was accepted by acclamation at this Zoom board meeting. Natives In My Cornerfrom Kris Ethington, Garden4NatureGOT Milkweed? How about California native milkweed? If you haven’t already started to transition your butterfly garden to growing our local native milkweed (Asclepias fascicularis – Narrow Leaf Milkweed), May/June is a good time to plant it. It won’t begin dormancy until November so there is time to get it established and support the 2020 breeding season of Monarch butterflies. Typically, the winter-deciduous plant will emerge in early February and grow quickly to 2’ to 4’ tall. In this photo, a Monarch female discovered this milkweed volunteer in May. After flowering late summer last year, I shared with some of you the seeds and left some of the pods to split and disburse. I was delighted to identify five new volunteers by Spring! You can buy nursery plants at Tree of Life Nursery and Roger’s Gardens. Both sell only native milkweed. Unfortunately, other local nurseries haven’t yet opted to offer native. If we as consumers resist adding new Tropical Milkweed to our gardens and ask these nurseries to offer Narrow Leaf Milkweed instead, the supply will increase. This will require a change by consumers. Did you know that this local native can be found in the undeveloped hills of San Clemente/Talega! Wild native milkweed does grow naturally in our region. For scientific evidence-based Western Monarch Butterfly Conservation strategies, please refer to the Xerces Society: https://xerces.org/western-monarch-call-to-action You can read the detail there on why Tropical Milkweed is “No Grow,” especially in our Southern Calfornia gardens.

As you may be aware (understatement!), there is a nasty virus going around, and it appears to be especially problematic for older people. Please contact me if you’d like a hand with grocery shopping or picking up a prescription. I’m happy to help out. Give me a ring at 949-547-4693.

Our long-planned adventure to visit our son and family in Sammamish, Washington, then take a road trip to Alaska took a different twist. We left home in our RV the week COVID stay-in-place order was announced. Staying isolated in our RV, cooking all meals and taking Highway 395 through remote towns, we made it safely into the arms of our welcoming family. We rented a cute cottage just a two-minute walk down a pretty lane. They are working from home with lots of house projects in the works, and we stay busy helping with the projects and the children’s distance learning. The surrounding area is beautiful with lots of wildlife, horses, beautiful trees and flowers. I brought sweet pea and gourd seeds and planted them with the children. I’ve heard lots of people talk about missing their Rhodies when they move to California. Well, the Rhododendrons are beautiful and blooming everywhere now. I am surprised, being a CA native, that they are such a huge plant. I am reminded of home with a small patch of CA Poppies blooming in front of the cottage. If all goes well, we may still be able to do the Alaska trip in late summer. We will wait and see. I knew I would be missing all my garden friends and events when planning this adventure, but the COVID has softened that feeling as life as we knew it together is not happening. I would love to hear from you. I post a few photos occasionally to Facebook, if you are interested in seeing more. Hope to see you in the fall.
