Tennessee PTA—Advocating Everyday, in Everyway for Everyone July 2020 Edition 3 Tennessee PTA—Advocating Everyday, in Everyway for All Tennessee Students
The 2019-2020 school year was very interesting to say the least. Before we venture into the new unknown, Tennessee PTA would like to celebrate the many accomplishments of 2019-2020. It was great to see the amazing things happening within our local and council PTAs throughout Tennessee. Included in this newsletter are the Tennessee PTA annual reports that you would normally receive at the state convention. 2020-2021 will provide PTA with many challenges and new opportunities. The mission of PTA is to make every child’s potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children. Although the setting is different our mission remains the same. We are here to help! Tennessee PTA is working hard to provide virtual training and resources for PTA leaders and members. Visit our newly designed website at tnpta.org to view the statewide leadership training sessions, the COVID-19 page, and many more resources. There are lots of exciting things happening this year so watch for upcoming emails and newsletters, follow us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.
Kim Henderson,. Tennessee PTA President

“Advocating for Every Child”
On February 12, 2020, Tennessee PTA had an invigorating day with over 350 students from across the state as we conducted our
annual “Student’s Storm the Hill”. Students along with their chaperones were given the opportunity to meet with legislators from their
own districts, along with taking guided tours of our State Capital. Students were given the opportunity to choose and conduct a person-
al topic during mock sessions, with the students taking the lead as both “Representatives” and “Speaker of the House”. Observing
students having such passion for advocacy and experiencing the importance of how their vote, was an overwhelming experience for
all. Do not let another year go without making this part of your life experience, make plans now to attend this inspiring event February
2021.
With such a changing and challenging year, Voter’s Voice has proven to be more valuable than ever as an excellent platform in reach-
ing our members. From education budget cuts, the Education Saving Account and then the closing of all schools for the remaining part
of the 2019/2020 school year. Tennessee PTA was able to reach registered members across the state, through Voter’s Voice, encour-
aging them to contact their representative, and voice their opinion and advocating for the best interest of all Tennessee Students.
Tennessee PTA Legislative Priorities 2019-2020
Excellent education is not possible without adequate resources and time for implementation. Fund education first! We support full funding of the Basic Education Plan 2.0 (BEP 2.0) Tennessee PTA is in agreement with the Tennessee School Board Association's (TSBA) position that "Prior to
any state or federal intervention based on a School’s or district’s failure to meet performance or accountabil-ity standards, governments’ should ensure that local schools and districts receive the necessary resources, support and time to improve."
Parents should be empowered with real choices, as long as the integrity of public schools remains intact. We acknowledge high-quality public charter schools can improve student achievement, but our support is re-
stricted to design principles outlined by National PTA’s position statements. We oppose diverting public funds or tax dollars to private and parochial schools through vouchers or similar ef-
forts. We recommend that all schools receiving public funds be held accountable to the same standards and require-
ments.
5
Strong public support for higher standards helps raise the bar for education. • We will continue to
support and educate parents about Tennessee’s higher academic standards and their implementation. We support the establishment of a timely deadline for reporting assessment results. We support a study into TNReady testing to ensure that reliability and accuracy is maintained in the ad-
ministering of the test platform across the state. We believe school districts should have the flexibility to choose high school standardized assessments
that align with the ACT College Readiness Benchmarks and meet the criteria for determining students to be college and career ready.
Children can achieve more when they and their families are healthy, and they are safe.
The health and well-being of our students must be a top priority to continue to rise academically and be ready for colleges and careers.
We will continue to work at the local, and state levels to enhance the nutritional health of our children and families.
We will request that every school in Tennessee establish student mentoring programs involving parents, school personnel, law enforcement and the community
Early education development should be effective and available. We believe that early education for children from birth to age five should be adequately funded and devel-
opmentally appropriate. We support state incentives for quality childcare and preschool programs that are affordable and accessi-
ble, coordinated at all levels (federal, state and local) and ensure quality in teacher training, health and safety standards.
We believe that early education for young children must include the social/emotional skills, physical skills, as well as academics to ensure that education and life skills include the whole child.
We support empowering parents as advocates for implementation of an age-appropriate, well-rounded educational program for all students.
National PTA Legislative Conference 2020
In March 2020, Tennessee Representatives, Tammy Crowe, (Knoxville) and Kim Henderson, (Franklin) attended the National
PTA Legislative Conference in Washington DC, uniting with hundreds of fellow PTA members across the nation, advocating
for one cause, the importance in health and well-being of all children. Despite the onset of the Covid-19 hitting the states are
rapid speed, they were able to meet with Congressmen Roe, Fleischmann, DesJarlais, Rose, Cohen, Kustoff and Cooper or
their representatives, discussing at great length, the issues most important to PTA.
Improve the Federal School Meal Program through Child Nutrition Reauthorization
Include schools in any comprehensive infrastructure package
Increase the Statewide Family Engagement Centers to $15 million.
In all, leaving our Nation’s Capital confident, that the voices of so many were heard, amongst our Senators and Representa-
tives. With a changing world and a new “normal” underway, PTA remains steadfast in their mission, “to make every child’s
potential a reality”.

What has your Tennessee PTA Board of Directors done during the 2019-2020 year?
Tennessee PTA had a busy and unusual year. The Tennessee PTA Board of Directors has represented you well. The
PTA voice has been loud and clear. We have spent numerous hours across the state speaking about educational issues
affecting students, parents, communities, school staff, school districts: rural, urban, & suburban. Tennessee PTA has also
traveled to the corners of the state offering leadership training and helping new and seasoned PTA leaders at all levels.
The Tennessee PTA Board of Directors meets quarterly as a whole group. The 18 members of the Board collectively
logged in more than 2000 hours just during the meeting portions of these weekends. Each member sits on three or more
state PTA committees and some also serve on additional statewide educational boards and committees. They work in
between meetings doing such things as: working on legislative issues, tracking membership, starting new PTA’s,
approving bylaws, running the Reflections program, answering units questions, visiting local units & councils, planning
events and conferences, contacting units with reminders and writing newsletter articles. As a reminder, Tennessee PTA
Board members are all volunteers just like you.
Tennessee PTA has also be working on developing partnerships through two National PTA grants to spread the message
out across the state on the importance of parent engagement and educational data.
With the challenge of COVID-19, Tennessee PTA has worked on redesigning communication and training to reach out and
provide personal service to our leaders and members via virtual options and social media. We have increased virtual
options, expanded our social media presence, added a COVID-19 resource page and are in the process of redesigning
the Tennessee PTA website.

2019-2020 Tennessee PTA Membership
The membership theme for 2019-2020 was “Building a Stronger PTA Together”. We
want you to know that we as a state board really believe that. Each member brings
something important to the table, whether it is leadership skills, volunteer time, moral
support, or additional insight. Thank you for your membership in PTA and I encourage
each of you to keep asking others to join and to return as you make plan for your
Membership Drive for 2020-2021!
We believe that working directly with each of our Local Units, their Presidents, and
Membership Chairs/Vice President that we can work tighter in 2020-21 and start growing
our membership!
I would like to thank EACH of you, our members, Local Unit, Councils, and all the
members of the membership committee and especially the Region Directors for their
hard work this past year. Although we have had a statewide decline in membership, they
were able to reach out to many existing units helping them to develop new leadership,
reach out to new members, and encourage more diversity in membership. The region
directors also helped to create 6 new units.
There are many amazing units and councils that have tremendous membership success
and are doing many great things. Also, thank you to all the local and council membership
chairs for their work in reaching out to grow membership.
For those of you interested in the numbers, let me share them with you. These are the
final numbers for the year as reported to National PTA.
