The community spirit ofLanchester is alive andwell as demonstrated byall the people who cameto the green in suchappalling weather tosupport the Lions VillageCarnival. The day was not withoutchallenges but many truefriends willingly offeredadditional support andother facilities which wereextremely helpful. It was disappointing thatthe Parade did not takeplace especially for the‘Pirates and Princesses’,and all those whoprepared for it, but due toan administrative error byTraffic Management theroads were not closed. Ascompensation to theLions, they have offeredto close the roads nextyear without paymentwhich will save the clubseveral hundred poundswhich may be used forgood causes. However, the Carnivalwas not without a greatdeal of success andenjoyment for the brave,

When Jim Potts retiredfrom the police force, acelebration seemed inorder. Fortunately he is acricketer, and his nieceFiona Selby, aided andabetted by husbandRobbie, a committeemember of LanchesterCricket Club, organised asuperb party in the clubhouse. All the family wasinvited, including somefrom Scotland, and ofcourse Jim’s friends andcolleagues. Presents piledup, mostly in liquid form.Jim was serenaded withhis favourite kind of musicby the North TynesideSteel Band, who had theirown marquee. A displayof photos illustratingJim’s cricketing career
filled a large swathe ofwall, together with askilfully mocked-upversion of the EveningChronicle’s front pagewith the fictional headline‘Veteran Potts DisgracesClub’. In fact Jim played800 games for the cluband scored 10,000 runs.Jim’s nearly 30 years inthe police force starting‘on the beat’ at Consett, then the CID and the‘major crime team’,followed by work withprisoners, was related bythree of his supervisors.Sergeant Bob Gardner, detective inspector SteveMurray and detective-sergeant Andy Coward allgave a graphic andsometimes scurrilous
account of Jim’s career, with the emphasis onentertainment. Theentertainment continuedwith a karaoke disco, during which Jim gavewhat he declared was thefinal rendering of ‘TwoLittle Boys’.During the evening acollection was made forSt Oswald’s Hospice inappreciation for its careof the family’s uncleGeorge, who died ofcancer in April. Fiona alsoorganised a raffle andauction and raised over£1000.A lot of trouble had beentaken to make this a reallysplendid party, which wasfully enjoyed by Jim andhis friends and family.

An intriguing title for awonderful mammothproduction of a musical, atLanchester EP School, which described the life inthe Amazon Rainforest andthe dangers which threatenit. All children in the juniorschool took part in thiscolourful, animated, performance with delightfulsinging, choreography, andvery clear excellentcontributions from themany narrators. The story was told throughthe eyes of the Yanamamotribe who inhabit this area.Their life revolved aroundthe forests, which theyworshipped and dependedon, to keep their inherentlifestyle. The evening wasabsolutely delightful frombeginning to end with the‘living trees’ singing sosweetly and later growingso gracefully, to the soldier
ants, heavy footed, marching across the stage. In addition we saw theJungle Garden with morewonderful singingfollowed by crazy monkeysswinging and movingaround with so muchliveliness. Some wonderfulscenes of the forest werecontinually shown on alarge screen as abackground to the stage.Duets were performed bythe lazy tired old sloths, and by the unloved, lonelyjaguars. After an interval whichincluded wine andrefreshments, the scenemoved on to the city andthe devastation of therainforests. The cowboys, who sang so well wereready to move in their cattleto the cleared areas, whichincluded moving, brilliantly choreographed, scenes of the fires, which
caused the final sadness. The final song, entitled‘The Sad Land’, pleadedfor the trees to remain forthe continuing life of theYanamamo. The costumes weresuperb, the choreographybrilliant and the musicprofessional. The scenerywas simple but effectiveand the lighting andprojection on the largescreen brought out thecolour and set the scenefor the musical. Theprogrammes had thecreativeness of talentedartistic children.Space prohibits naming allthe people who took part, but Head Teacher, JaneDavis, who contributed somuch herself as Director,Producer and Pianist waswarm in her thanks to thechildren, staff and all thehelp from volunteers andfriends of the school.

This wasfollowed by KevinDoonan with his fiddlewho treated the audienceto a mixture of Irish musicof lively jigs and airs andAmerican Blue Grassmusic. The choirconcluded the first half ofthe evening withnostalgic songs, the firstof which was sung at theInaugural concert, thesecond in the 10th concertin 1978, and the third inthe 20th in 1988.Kevin Doonan’s secondspot after the interval, aftera lively introductory twosongs by the choir, included a tribute to hisfather as he played theIrish tune “An Coolin”, atune which his father hadplayed as soloist at thefirst Lanchester MVCconcert. As confidently predictedin a previous issue of theVillage Voice, the bowlsclub has started to getsome excellent resultsnow we get into the middleof the “summer”. In factthe teams have not lostsince the last edition ofthe Village Voice. Theonly blot on the copybook was a game we hadto cancel because wecould not make a team(perhaps fortunatelybecause it poured with rainthat day). The Wednesday teamfinished off the season infine form. They won eachof their last three gamessix nil to make up fordisappointing earlyseason form. Currentlyour best hope of honourslie in the Monday triplesleague. If we do well invital matches againstAnnfield Plain and Diptonwe may be in with a chanceof winning the league. The Saturday team were
delighted to get a drawwith South Moor, alwaysa hard team to play. Thegame all came down toour last shot. AlanWharton playing skip, with 31 pairs of eyes onhim and a lot of shortwoods in his way, pulledoff a superb draw shot toturn around a six shotdeficit to take the matchaggregate. A contenderfor shot of the season Ithink. On Sunday 22nd June, forthe first time for a numberof years, LanchesterBowling Club entertainedthe Durham BowlsPresident’s team. Despitewinning three of the fiverinks we just lost overallby the narrow margin often shots. Equally asenjoyable as the gamewas a fine tea held in theSocial Club afterwards. In another friendly on thefollowing Friday wewelcomed BarnardCastle. On this occasion
we were able to win thematch quite comfortablyand look forward tovisiting their green nextyear which is in thedelightful grounds ofBowes Museum. I must admit to notwanting to go - we havebeen before, a long timeago and it was AWFUL- but there have beenlots of positivecomments andobviously there hasbeen a change ofmanagement. TheEquestrian Centre at KipHill is now quiteimpressive. We were there on a verycold May Day and it waslovely and warm and sowas the reception. Wewere seated at what welike best, a lovely roundtable where the
conversation can flow - itwas off to a really goodstart and then folks - thefood! They have a verycomprehensive menuwith various optionsincluding a pensionerspecial, which on thisparticular occasion wedecided to pass on andwent instead for 2courses for £9.95.We sampled lasagne, chicken curry withluscious chunky chipsand scampi, following bythe puds - an amazingbrandy snap basket filledwith mousse, mixed
berries and cream toppedoff with chocolate andfudge, a chocolatebrownie with crème dementhe, cream andvarious other delightsserved in a sundae glass- the comment was‘WOW’ - and meringuewith fruit, cream andchocolate. All thisfollowing by a good cupof coffee and shortbread.A really good mealexperience which we allthoroughly enjoyed. Not a horse in sight, butdefinitely the place for agood human nosebag!
