A Church That Makes A Difference!

Inside this Issue...

From the Pastor’s

Heart... Dear members & friends of

Broadman Baptist Church:

“In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of

your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now” (Phil.

1:4-5, NIV)

On Saturday, July 20th we celebrated the 50th anniversary of a truly

amazing event. On that day in 1969 a man named Neil Armstrong

stepped out of a spacecraft and, for the first time in history, a hu-

man being set foot on the moon. Americans across the country

and people around the world watched Buzz Aldrin join him as pilot

Michael Collins orbited the moon. The entire trip to the moon

lasted only 8 days, they were on the surface less than a day, and

the men spent merely 2 ½ hours actually walking on the moon;

however, the sense of wonder and accomplishment felt by an en-

tire nation lasts to today.

As I contemplate that event of 50 years ago, many thoughts come

to mind in how it relates to us as Christians and as a church. I

think of the thousands of people whose name we do not know, but

who made it all possible with their work. Then I remember all the

people in our church who work so hard but rarely receive recogni-

KINGDOM ON

WHEELS...

“If you love what you do,

you’re going to talk about

it,” says Philadelphia Ea-

gles quarterback Carson

Wentz. “I love Jesus … so

I’m going to talk about

[him]. But I’m not going to

force [Christianity] down

your throat, either.” That’s

why the pro athlete tries to

show his faith by “how I

live and what I’m about.”

Wentz started the founda-

tion AO1 (Audience of

One) to make a tangible

impact beyond the grid-

iron. With a local church,

he sponsors Thy Kingdom

Crumb, a food truck that

offers free meals to peo-

ple in the community. The

motto painted on the mo-

bile restaurant sums up

the message Wentz wants

to share with his

neighbors: “It’s on us …

CHRISTIANS...

Christians are like the several flowers in

a garden, that have each of them the

dew of heaven, which, being shaken with

the wind, they let fall at each other’s

roots, whereby they are jointly nourished,

and become nourishers of each other.

tion. I think of how things that

appear impossible become pos-

sible when people commit to

the mission and to one another,

and I know that can happen in

the life of our church by God’s

power. I think of the heart of a

nation lifted from the divisions

of Vietnam and the conflicts of

race and culture, joined to-

gether in the hope of such an

accomplishment. I think on that,

and I see how God can renew

our hearts as we set our hopes

and goals high for His glory.

Our nation has changed

greatly in these last 50 years, in

good ways and bad ways. What

amazed us technologically 50

years ago has become com-

monplace today. Yet, the most

powerful aspects of the moon-

walk will hold true – the power

of partnership and the possibil-

ity of what can happen when

people work steadfastly to-

gether for a common goal.

These lessons hold true for us

as well. As a church, our meth-

odologies may and must change

from what they were 50 years

ago, but our mission remains

the same…helping people find

life with God and walk with Him

every day. That is an even

greater mission and miracle

than sending a man to the

moon!

God wants to do great things!

Let’s get in on them!!

-Pastor Steve

(Continued from page 1) A DAY AWAY IN A QUIET

PLACE...

Maya Angelou said, “Each per-

son deserves a day away in

which no problems are con-

fronted, no solutions searched

for. Each of us needs to with-

draw from the cares which will

not withdraw from us.” Simi-

larly, when Jesus’ disciples

were consumed with ministry,

he urged them, “Come with me

by yourselves to a quiet place

and get some rest” (Mark

6:31, NIV)

The late days of summer might

be just the time to seek “a day

away” not only from problems

but even from ministry. While

serving God and others can be

energizing, we must balance

work with rest. God set that

example, resting after creating

the world; Jesus set that exam-

ple, calling his disciples away

— not just alone, but with

him — to be refreshed.

Spend a relaxing day at a lake.

Go on a scrapbooking retreat

or a leisurely hike with a friend.

Find a monastery that wel-

comes guests, and experience

48 hours of prayer and silence

there. Invite Jesus into that

time and space. And remem-

ber another message he

shared: “Come to me, all you

who are weary and burdened,

and I w i l l g i v e y ou

rest” (Matthew 11:28, NIV).

BOUND BY GRACE…

Grace binds you with far

stronger cords than the cords

of duty or obligation can bind

you. Grace is free, but when

once you take it you are bound

forever to the Giver, and bound

to catch the spirit of the Giver.

Like produces like, Grace

makes you gracious, the Giver

makes you give.

COMING UP ROSES…

A rose can be quite eloquent

When standing all alone;

It needs no vast accompaniment,

No pompous, royal throne,

For beauty is not always found

In suave sophistication,

But often stands just by itself

As simply God's creation!

—Peggy Ferrell

PRAYER MINISTRY…

The church office handles the FaceBook (FB) prayer group and

the email prayer list. If you wish to be included in the FB

prayer list just ask

To join the group, not everyone in the church is on the email

prayer list, only those that have asked to be on the list. If you

wish to be on the prayer list please notify Pat in the office and

include your email.

THE MASTER’S WORKS…

As a skilled inventor, John Muir was a prized factory employee

in Indianapolis. If not for an industrial accident in his 20s, he

may have spent his life making things indoors. But after recov-

ering from being temporarily blinded, Muir headed on a 1,000-

mile walk to “consider the lilies.” He then began doing that

literally, as a botanist.

To his résumé, the 19th-century Renaissance man added

naturalist, glaciologist, conservationist, founder of the Sierra

Club, and Father of National Parks. Yet when Muir was asked

what he did, he replied simply, “I study the inventions of God.”

RIVERBEDS...

I think of the love of God as a great river, pouring through us

even as the waters pour through our ravine at floodtime. Noth-

ing can keep this love from pouring through us, except of

course our own blocking of the river.

Do you sometimes feel that you have got to the end of your

love for someone who refuses and repulses you? Such a

thought is folly, for one cannot come to the end of what one

has not got. We have no store of love at all. We are not jugs;

we are riverbeds.

ATTENDANCE AND MORE... RECIPE OF THE MONTH…

What ‘Tithe’ Means

Malachi 3: 10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that

there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now here-

with, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows

of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be

room enough to receive it.

Proverbs 3: 9 Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with

the firstfruits of all thine increase: 10 so shall thy barns be

filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new

wine.

KJV

In English, the word tithe means ten percent or ‘a tenth of’. It

is translated from the Hebrew word mah-as-ar or mah-as-raw

which likewise, of course also means a tenth (part) and from

the Greek word de-ka-tay which again means a tenth (as a

percentage).

The tithe is not just a tradition or commandment of Moses but

a precept God instructed His people to follow from the earliest

times. God calls us to give a tithe and with His call He prom-

ises blessing and protection for our material affairs.

We should not tithe as a matter of keeping the Law or adher-

ing to Old Covenant conditions. We should have valid reasons

as Christians in the New Covenant for giving our tithe. We

should tithe because:

It is a good foundation for sound personal finances.

It links our material well-being with our relationship with

God.

By it we are acknowledging God’s presence in our material affairs.

It gives us an opportunity to prove God on His promises

about the tithe.

Father, thank You for the opportunity to give offerings. May

my joyful heart and sacrificial gifts be pleasing to You.

School supplies will be our focus for the month of August for

OCC shoeboxes. When shopping, remember that large items

such as spiral notebooks and folders will not fit in the boxes, so

concentrate on items that will fit. The kids that attended VBS

donated quite a bit of things during VBS week and that is a big

plus. We are really on our way to meeting our goal of 300 shoe-

CHRISTIAN SYMBOLS…

GRAPES…

As the fruit used to pro-

duce wine or juice for

Holy Communion, grapes

represent the blood shed

by Jesus on the cross.

Grapes also symbolize

fruitfulness (or lack

thereof) in the life of ancient Israel and, by extension, of a

Christian. “My beloved had a vineyard on a very fertile hill.

... he expected it to yield grapes, but it yielded wild

grapes” (Isaiah 5:1-2, NRSV).

AUGUST MISSIONS ...

The Broadman Beacon A Church That Makes A Difference

Page 7

AUGUST MISSIONS FOCUS…

Central Community Church continuing (Operation Christmas Child)

The mission of Central Community Church is to be Christ-like in our daily living by emphasizing total commitment of life, personality,

and possessions to the Lordship of Christ in the inner-city of Akron and to be empowered by the Holy Spirit to share Christ with as

many people as possible in our church, community and throughout the world.

Along with the continuing mission (Operation Christmas Child), the Mission for August is for our congregation to help Central Commu-

nity Church, a small inner-city Southern Baptist "sister" church in Akron, to reach out to local families for Christ. Each year, in August,

they host a free "Back to School Backpack Giveaway Carnival" to help meet the needs of less fortunate school-aged children in the

area. Up to 250 disadvantaged families can show up for this event. The Church serves food & drinks, plays games, has make & take

crafts and distributes backpacks with supplies to underprivileged children... all free of charge to the families. Last year they gave out

a total of 204 backpacks to needy children in the community, praise God! I would like to thank those of you here at Broadman, who

donated backpacks, supplies, money & your time in order to help make it such a great witness for Christ. You are so appreciated!

Thankfully, Summit Racing Equipment has generously agreed to donate again this year. They will be donating 146 backpacks filled

with school supplies! Like last year, however, these backpacks will be filled with supplies for older children. So, smaller backpacks

and supplies for younger children, grades K-1, are still so desperately needed (see list). Our goal & mission is to help them in any way

we can. They intentionally, intensely & immensely love the Lord & others and they do SO much for the surrounding community. God is

blessing them in many different ways! Let us also be a part by donating backpacks with supplies and even opening up our wallets to

give monetary support throughout the entire month of July & into August to help them cover some of the cost it will take to have this

wonderful community-wide event. Also, please mark your calendar for August 24th to come help them out at the carnival.

Many blessings,

Wendy Staats

In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak,

remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.' " ~Acts 20:35

Therefore we ought to support people like these, that we may be fellow workers for the truth. ~3 John 1:8

EASTER

2019

GROOVING FOR GOD...

Fifty years ago this summer, as the

Woodstock Festival in upstate New

York became a symbol of the coun-

tercultural movement, another

groundswell was occurring: the

Jesus Movement. In 1970, teen-

ager Greg Laurie was baptized af-

ter a bunch of “Jesus freaks” intro-

duced him to the Savior. The lost

kid whose mom had been divorced

seven times finally felt part of a

family.

Laurie, now pastor of a megachurch and author of Jesus Revolu-

tion (Baker Books), says the Millennial generation is ripe for an-

other major faith movement. During a time of division and unrest

that mirrors the late ’60s, people are longing for what’s “real” and

relational, he writes. Our “weary, chaotic, selfie-saturated culture”

needs “a big, ravishing, transcendent, and transformational vision

of who God really is,” adds Laurie. “That’s what happened fifty

years ago. It can happen again today.”

CHOIR NEWS…

Hope you are enjoying the summer. REMEMBER: mark your

calendar for our fall choir retreat on Saturday, August 24 from 9

to noon. We will then return to our regular rehearsal schedule

of the last Wednesday and first Wednesday of the month. Come

praise the Lord with us.
