BUE Research Bulletin June 2016

1

Foreword

This second issue of BUE’s Research Bulletin brings to light accomplishments which were done quietly in the past six months by BUE’s Academic Staff and Teaching Assistants. I am happy to see books published and awards grant-ed to Teaching Assistants alongside with their Professors in a strong statement of the quality of staff at BUE. This booklet is by no means a complete list of research accomplishments. It provides an update on the overall research per-formance at BUE and compiles notable activities and honours of BUE staff, including editorial board memberships, conference chairmanships, book authorships, received recognitions and won research grants. I invite the reader to visit BUE’s Research Portal and international data-bases for a complete list of publications authored

by BUE’s staff appearing in high impact inter-national journals and conferences. Without the stamina and enthusiasm of BUE’s researchers, the encouragement of BUE’s leadership and the support of BUE’s administration, these accom-plishments would not have happened. I am in-debted to everyone. In particular, I am thankful to colleagues who contributed to this issue of the Research Bulletin, to colleagues in BUE’s Re-search Administration Office and the Faculty of Engineering’s Editorial Office for publication of the bulletin in this fine form.

About the front cover: Portrait of Sir Isaac Newton, by Sir Godfrey Kneller, 1702. Newton (1642–1727) is one of the most influential science figures of all time. His scholarly work defined much of clas-sical physics and its associated mathematics for centuries, and remain essential in these fields today. A key figure in the Scientific Revolution, his contributions spanned the fields of classical mechanics, gravitation, optics, celestial mechanics, laws of motion, power series, analysis, and many others. He is credited (with Leibniz) for the development of calculus.
