What a great turnout we had this year of 63 Teams! The Michel Family would like to thank everyone that showed up to shoot at this year’s event and want to send out a few special shout outs to some of the individuals that helped make this year a success. Thank you to Patty Simpson who went out of her way to sell 50/50 Raffle Tickets and raised $1,038, 50% went to the lucky winner Freda Batten and 50% went to the tournament payout. Also, the Banks Lake Pub Staff did a great job with a full house keeping them busy throughout the 3 days. Sunbanks Lake Resort provided great room rates and also added to the tournament payout, the view at their resort is spectacular! Finally, to the tournament directors Gary and Sterling George who did an awesome job, it was pretty stressful at times but you two did a great job of keeping the bracket moving.

SACRAMENTO, CAThank you to everyone, players and spectators alike, for making the 46th Annual Reunion Tournament in memory of Terry Stonier such a special one as well as a great success. The field of 97 included top local players as well as some pros. Some great matches unfolded as the final 4 took center stage on Sunday. House player Chong Vang battled hard against Jaynard Orque but fell short to take 4th place.Amar Kang and Edgie Geronimo played a tight match in the finals and Edgie took home the Victory Cup and $2000 cash.We had a great field and an awesome finish. to Edgie Geronimo for taking home first place and the victory cup. Special props to our very own Chong Vang for such a strong showing. The kid has skills! I would like to also thank all of my staff for working tirelessly throughout the weekend and proving to me and everyone else that they are a great team. On Saturday and Sunday, April 4-5, 2015, American Legion Post #129 in Oak Harbor, WA, hosted its annual Partners 8-Ball Tournament. Free, secure Wi-Fi was, and is, permanently available. We scheduled these dates not realizing until too late that this was Easter weekend.

But we got lucky! 22 teams (6 more than last year!) played for $3,470 in prize money, awarded to 6 places. The players came mainly from Island, Skagit, Whatcom and Snohomish counties, with one team coming down from nearby Vancouver, B.C.

Our tournament was played on 4 - 4x8 tables, all located at the American Legion Hall. The races were to be to 7 in both the no-loss and one-loss brackets, with a single race to 9 set for the championship.

This field consisted of 8 Masters along with quite a few high A’s, and at least 11 of the 22 teams had a bona-fide shot at the title from the onset. So, the outcome was that most of the matches were hotly contended and often quite dramatic.

This year’s larger field size required two days of play and we brought back 8 partnerships to play on Sunday. The tournament ended in a two-way split for 1st and 2nd Places, by agreement of all concerned parties.

The split was done 50-50 by the “Hot Seat” team of Steve Holloway (Bellingham, WA) and Ryan Skaggs (Clinton, WA) with the One-Loss winners, Cody Clark (Everett, WA) and Greg Odal (Everett, WA). Ed Slade (Everett, WA) and Gary Christiansen played exceptionally well to come in 3rd.

4th Place was tied down by Randy Click (Anacortes, WA) and Larry Binschus (Burlington, WA). 5th and 6th Places were shared by two tournament surprises: the team of Ray Camacho, Jr. and Mark Cabral (both of Mt. Vernon) and the team of Leo Violette (Redmond, WA) and Cassie Francois (Lynnwood, WA).

Our gratitude goes to Chuck Hassler, who organized the tournament, and to the staff at the American Legion, most of whom were volunteers, for their wonderful support. And finally, our sincerest gratitude goes out to all of the players who took the time out of otherwise busy lives to come and visit our fair rural village.

March 31, 2015 (Denver, CO): On Sunday, March 29, 2015, 22 kids from three states arrived to support the juniors event of the 8th Annual Wyoming Open in Saratoga, WY. This special weekend jam-packed with divisions for every skill level treated the kids to the third annual youth event in loving memory of avid Wyoming pool enthusiast Steve “Nubbins” Doehling.

Three winners were crowned from each age division. In the 18 & Under division, 16-year-old Richard Gonzales of Casper, Wyoming defeated 14-year-old Sheign Krafczik of Kimball, NE without giving up one game in his final two matches. Krafczik was also last year’s runner-up. In the 12 & Under division, 12-year-old Alex Ingle also went undefeated to keep the title in Wyoming, eliminating 11-year-old Colorado juniors Aaron Krapes

The 8th Annual Wyoming Open Pool Tournament held at the Platte Valley Community Center in Saratoga, WY on March 27-29 saw a massive field of strong shooters compete for nearly $35,000 in prize money and calcutta money! The $10,000 added money event drew 206 players that filled the Expert, Classic and Sportsman divisions and seen another 24 players in the Masters division and 22 players in the juniors event.

Several big name professionals that made the trip to Wyoming included Mika Immonen, Johnny Archer, Raj Hundal, Corey Deuel, Oscar Dominguez and Rodney Morris who unexpectedly made it after seeing his son, Zayden Rocket Morris, being born

competitive in the 3 game format in which players compete in 10-ball, Saratoga (a hybrid 8-ball & 10-ball game) and 8-ball. Corey Deuel shot great throughout the weekend recording wins over Marc Vidal and Mika Immonen in the quarters and semis but fell

short to Rodney Morris in the 10-ball title match. Morris notched wins over Oscar Dominguez in the quarters and defeated Johnny Archer in the semis. Johnny Archer emerged as the Saratoga champion with wins over Dominguez on the winners side before losing to Deuel for the rocking chair and then got a win over Morris to get back to Corey Deuel where they agreed to play one match for the final. Corey Deuel defeated Tom Thompson in the quarters and the up and coming Danny Olsen in the semis before dispatching Archer for the chair. Rodney Morris finished in 3rd place in the Saratoga competition. In the 8-ball event, it was hot shooting Marc Vidal who battled through the stocked field with wins over Mark Tadd and Chad Shoulders in the quarters and semis and then he took out the Hall of Famer, Johnny Archer in the finale. Archer got wins over Danny Olsen and Adam King in the quarters and semis to reach the final match. Hats off to amateur Adam King who recorded wins over Mika Immonen and Rodney Morris

before losing to Archer in a hill-hill match!

The Expert divison had 64 strong players from all around the Rocky Mountain region and it was a Casper, WY player, Perry Gilbert, who came out on top as he did his signature move and double dipped the smooth shooting Jeff Whitehead from SLC, UT for the champion plaque. Perry had wins over Ricardo Martinez, Matt Sanchez and Rich Haines before losing to Whitehead for the rocking chair. Whitehead notched wins over Todd Hatcher and the strong shooting, Sammy Cordova, before getting the chair from Perry. Ricardo Martinez of Rawlins, WY took third place honors and Denver’s Sammy Cordova took fourth place. Caela Huddleston, Denver, CO, claimed the top finishing female prize money.

The 64-person Classic divison title was claimed by Joe Richards of Ft. Collins who outshot Philip Canaday of Rawlins, WY. Richards had a semi-final win over Dave Maslowski while Canaday outdueled Bryan Bland on his side of the bracket to reach the rocking chair match. Aimee Peterson from Denver took the 3rd place spot, and the top

finishing female, after beating the dangerous Aaron Maki of Gillette, WY who got 4th place.

The Sportsman division saw a full field 32 players go at it and after the dust settled it was a Colorado shootout for the title and Isabel Gutierrez beat Alex Loma to claim the top spot. Isabel beat Chip Aanenson from Laramie, WY and Robert Hinton, another Rawlins, WY shooter to take the rocking chair. Loma beat the same two players to get a shot at the title before coming up s little short. Hinton took 3rd place while Aanenson claimed fourth.

The 9-ball Hard Luck tournament title went to Patrick Hayes of Colorado who beat Seth Krafczik from Kimbal, NE for in the title match.

The Junior’s event that was hosted by the Billiard Education Foundation (BEF) had 22 participants in the three different divisions. A big thanks goes out to Samm Diep-Vidal, the BEF Executive Director, for overseeing and running the junior’s tournament brackets. In the 18 & under division Richard Gonzales of Casper, WY took top honors followed by Sheign Krafczik from Kimball, NE in

The 12 & under bracket was won by Alex Ingle from Laramie, WY, it was Aaron Krapes of Golden, CO in 2nd place and Amanda Campbell of Arvada, CO in the 3rd spot. The Pee-Wee division was a Saratoga, WY shootout that was claimed by Bailey Glode who topped her very good friend, Piper Gray, in the championship match and the two kept right on playing after the match was decided!

Tournament Promoter, EJ Glode, was ecstatic with the record turnout for this year’s Wyoming Open and he just keeps making this event bigger and better each year! The players and spectators got treated to some world class pool playing performed by the professionals and other Masters and Expert players - the type of pool rarely seen in person in the Rocky Mountain region! There were several people who drove hundreds of miles that didn’t even play in the tournament but just came to spend to enjoy the spectacular play and the camaraderie of the professionals who took pics and signed autographs all weekend long. Another highlight of the weekend was the graciousness of all involved in raising money for a recently widowed Federal Marshall’s wife whose husband was just recently killed in the line of duty and is carrying their unborn child. A $500 pool stick, donated by John Goodman, that was autographed by all of the attending pros and several autographed cue balls were auctioned off and purchased by Philip Canaday and EJ Glode that totaled $2,000 and along with random donations $2,300 was raised for the victim’s family!! The pool brotherhood really came through - way to go pool players!

Anyway, the waiting lists for this year’s tournament is solid proof that it is time for this tournament to grow in some fashion so we’ll wait and see what EJ Glode has up his sleeve for next year!

Freeze an object ball to the rail and suddenly it becomes a “special” shot. Many players are afraid of rail shots. You hear all kinds of theories from other players:

“You have to hit the rail and the ball at the same time.” Wrong.

“If you use inside english on the cueball, the object ball will have inside english as it runs down the rail, and inside english makes the ball hug the rail.” Nope.

“If you use outside english on the cueball, the object ball will be thrown a little off the rail, so it doesn’t bounce out away from the rail and miss.” Sorry.

“Shoot ’em with draw.” “Shoot with follow.” Doesn’t matter.

Yes, rail shots are more difficult than normal, open-table cut shots. For one thing, those corner pockets are at their narrowest from that angle, and because of that you are also more likely to jaw the ball. But here’s the really important difference: If the object ball is cut into the rail even a tiny bit (as opposed to cutting it down the rail), the ball is going to bounce out from the rail. Undercut, and you’ll miss.There are three possibilities:1. Hit the object ball (OB) before you hit the rail. In this

case, the OB always bounces out.2. Hit the OB and the rail at the same time. This is The

Big Myth. Countless players believe this is what they should do, and believe this is what they are actually doing. If you are sinking these shots, you are not hitting ball & rail simultaneously. If you do, the OB will throw into the rail every time. And if it goes into the rail, it’s coming out from the rail. This means you will miss, unless you are close to the pocket, or the rail gutter (the gully worn in the cloth next to each rail) is helping you.

3. Hit rail first. Believe it or not, this is what you actually have to do. The cushion is made of rubber. The cueball

(CB) sinks into the cushion until it strikes the OB. Wait – doesn’t this mean we’re overcutting? Yes, it does, but the fact is, the collision causes throw, which corrects for the overcut.

There are two ways to hit rail first and make the ball, so let’s go a little further. In the first case, as described in #3 above, the CB hits the OB on the way into the cushion rubber. If you hit the rail a little too far from the OB, you will miss by overcutting. However, if you hit a little farther up-rail than that, you may make the ball! This is because the CB is sinking into the rail and then hitting the OB on the rebound. In other words, in the second case, the CB hits the OB on the way out of the cushion. This is useful knowledge.Let’s summarize. There is no margin for error on the side of hitting OB first. All of the room for error is on the rail-first side. Don’t hit ball first or ball & rail together. Rail shots are difficult because if you undercut, you miss.OK, what about english? The players that are making a high percentage of their rail shots with inside or outside english are actually delivering the CB to the rail first. There is no such thing as “rail-hugging” english. They may be aiming to hit ball & rail together, but several effects – cueball squirt, swerve, spin-induced throw, and perhaps the effect of the spin coming off the rail – combine to produce the desired result, and the ball drops in the pocket. It’s useful to be able to shoot these shots with whatever english you need. However, the purpose of english is position. If you always shoot your rail shots with inside follow, for example, what do you do when position play requires something else? Sidespin complicates shots. Doesn’t it make more sense to learn to shoot these shots in a neutral fashion – no english – and then use english as necessary to get shape? Hint: yes.Here’s a great drill to practice rail shots: Freeze OB’s to the rail at every diamond, until you’ve placed all fifteen balls. With cueball in hand, begin shooting. Shoot until you miss, or until your cueball hits an OB other than the one you’re shooting. When you miss, set them up again and start over. Do this drill for 15 minutes. You’ll improve. Do it for a half hour, and you’ll be fearless and impeccable.

If you’ve been holding a cue for more than a week, then you have heard it a hundred times: “You missed because you stood up on the shot.” You’ve probably noticed others doing, too, and you told them as much. Right?So… what does that mean? Why is standing up during your shot a bad thing?Let’s start with looking at the mechanics of a well-executed shot: You have surveyed the layout, and chosen the ball you want to pocket. You visualize the shot in your mind, including the aim line. After chalking your tip, you approach the shot, lining up your cue on the line of aim. Everything looks good, as you plant your feet in a comfortable stance. Your head lowers over the stick, your back arm settling in at a beautiful right angle, perfectly perpendicular. You take a couple of practice strokes, and you’re confident the ball is going to go in. The only thing moving is your back arm; elbow and shoulder are locked in position. You deliver the stroke, the cue ball strikes the object ball cleanly, and the object ball finds the bottom of the pocket.It’s a beautiful feeling, isn’t it?Now, I want you to remember one of the many shots you took where you missed. I’m going to bet that somewhere in the sequence of events above, something was… off. You may not have followed your routine exactly, or your aim was a little off, or you didn’t take enough practice strokes. You might not even know exactly what it was, but somehow, your subconscious mind knew that you weren’t going to make it.And chances are you stood up.I have a friend who uses “body English” when she shoots sometimes… it’s quite humorous to see her do a little “rain

dance” right after she shoots, trying to will the object ball into the pocket. Her subconscious mind told her she was off, but she didn’t listen, and tried to use the force to make the ball do what she wanted. Not only does she stand up, but she leans to the side, dances up and down, and sometimes even yells at the ball!Standing up on your shots is usually indicative of your subconscious mind screaming at you “NO, you’re going to miss!” It sometimes will act on its own, throwing in a little swerve of your back arm, or adding English to the shot, in order to compensate. Your head comes up, and you start walking back to your seat before the cue even hits the object ball.People will tell you “you need to stay down on your shot,” but that isn’t the whole answer. Standing up isn’t the actual problem. It’s a symptom of a larger problem. Your subconscious mind takes over to compensate, and makes you move your head, your bridge, your elbow, or your shoulder. Your hips might move as well. Standing simply exacerbates the problem by moving more body parts. And the more parts are moving, the greater the chance of the shot going awry. Listen to your inner voice. Don’t shoot the shot until he says he’s satisfied. Once your inner voice is ready, you’re ready to shoot with confidence. And when you shoot with confidence, you’ll find yourself staying down on the shot, watching the ball drop into the pocket every time.Then you can stand up, and high-five your teammates. TWISTING BANKSLast month I attended Allen Hopkins’ Super Billiard Expo near Philadelphia. If you live on the East Coast this is an event you should experience at least once. Among the many tournaments was a one pocket pro tournament. I played in it and the bank shots that came up reminded me how important spin on the object ball is if you want to manipulate angles beyond the simple mirror system of banking. “Twisting” the object ball turns those cushions into fun-house mirrors.Shot 1 is a fairly standard trick shot that shows the principle. Put the 1 ball right in the middle of the table exactly between the two pockets. For motivation, put the 8 ball as shown and say the 1 ball is your last solid. Place the cue ball in the line shown and about 12 inches from the 1. The remarkable 3-cushion bank is made as shown. Hit half of the 1 ball -- that is, aim your cue stick through the center of the cue ball straight at the edge of the 1 ball. No side spin is needed since the action of the cue ball rubbing across the 1 ball will put some spin on it.That spin on the 1 ball will make it bite into the first cushion a little and it will land “short” on the second rail after coming straighter off the first rail than normal. More importantly, the angle into the first cushion will cause a little left spin to end up on the cue ball. In effect, the spin you start with is reversed on the first rail.The left side spin then takes on the second cushion and starts to bring the ball back towards the side pockets. The spin may reverse on the second cushion as well, becoming right side spin. The one ball lands by the 8 ball for its third cushion and banks into the other side pocket.You may have to adjust the shot on your table. On very sticky equipment, you may be able to make the bank on two cushions. If the 1 ball comes back too quickly and hits the 8, either hit less of the 1 ball or move the cue ball farther back and still hit half the 1. Move the balls slightly up the table and the one cushion bank becomes possible even though the pocket seems to be in the way.At one pocket, such shots come up all the time and are practical. Shot 2 is how I left one opponent. My pocket (where I have to pocket 8 balls at one pocket) is J while his pocket is P. The onerail bank in this position will kiss as the cue ball will be moving too slowly to get out of the way.My opponent’s solution was to shoot the 2 ball to point A.

The cue ball then had enough speed to get out of the way. The 2 ball continued to B, back to A and then into his

pocket at P -- the same pattern as in the trick shot.In a later match I had the position in Shot 3.

Each ball is about one ball off the cushion and my pocket is P. The bank looks impossible again due to the kiss. The first part of the trick is to cut the 3 just enough that the cue ball will be right on the cushion as the 3 comes back so you avoid the kiss. The second part of the trick is to use a little right English on the cue ball to give the 3 ball a little extra left spin so that when it hits the cushion it bites and the angle actually reverses a little.In the diagram I’ve exaggerated the cut to make the action clear -- in reality the 3 ball barely clears the cue ball as it passes. I didn’t make the ball but I did leave it close to my pocket which is often good enough at one pocket.

Few pool players understand that their performance will reach a stalemate after they master various mental and physical aspects of the game. This “lack of improvement” occurs because they have not developed the ability to balance both their conscious and subconscious mind. The fact remains that you cannot play pool unconsciously. This is a very common problem that needs to be addressed—if you can’t clearly define where the problem lies in your mind, how can you go about solving it? It is like driving a bicycle through an obstacle course while wearing a blindfold. You just can’t do it!Furthermore, it takes many years to develop the physical skills necessary to become a good player. However, during this period of time we get defeated over and over again and it is quite possible that many of us have the physical abilities to play on a professional level but do not have the belief system necessary to maintain a high-level of play.A steady diet of hypnotherapy, positive affirmations, subliminal messages, and EFT can positively affect your game. They are all great ways to reprogram the way that you talk to yourself. After all, your subconscious mind controls your physical game. It controls the way you move your muscles and also controls the various elements of your pool stroke. This part of your mind also manages most of your day-to-day functions. It is what you use to drive to work or brew some coffee. This part of your brain also manages your physical abilities, which are sometimes referred to as your gross motor skills. In reality, it is capable of controlling your pool stroke too, but it should not. Pool players could spend most of their life trying to consciously guide their pool cue. However, the same players would also wonder why their performance is so poor. It is like a person trying to emulate the performance of a computer using a calculator. It just doesn’t work that way.The conscious mind is what we use to determine what path the cue ball will take, what speed the ball needs to be struck with, and what spin we need to put on the cue ball to get us to where we need to be for our next shot. Sometimes you may choose to think about a possible scratch, and you may direct your attention to that pitfall in an attempt to prevent some type of mistake. At the same time, when you are down on the shot you should only be concentrating on aiming at the contact point on the object ball, so you have to decide what specifically that you are going to focus on and when. When you learn how to control your focus, you are guiding your conscious mind. The alternative is to leave your mind open to negative thoughts that are unrealistic. This may result in your attention being divided between two or more things. Believing you cannot control your ability to focus could make you feel like you are playing a slot machine or buying a Powerball lottery ticket. In either case, you never know exactly what might happen, but in reality you know that the results more than likely won’t be good. In the pool world, your game can be limited by lots of clutter including troublesome thoughts and expectations. You should use your non-conscious mind to control your stroke and keep your conscious mind engaged with all of the decisions you need to make. These are decisions and thought processes such as “What angle do you have on the current shot?” or “What speed and spin does the cue ball need to be struck with in order for you to reach position on your next shot?” When you learn how to balance both your conscious and subconscious mind, you will start to experience what it feels like to play your best pool consistently. You can rest assured that you will never master the game of pool or conquer your mind, but taking the time to learn how to play the game with a positive attitude is certainly worth the time and effort.

Have you ever had a match when you were playing well, then started missing for no apparent reason?

Did you have any indication this was going to happen, were there any shots that just “wobbled in” that may have been a sign that something needed to be calibrated in your aiming, or stroke?

I focus most of my attention on the cue ball after getting down on the shot, just glancing at the object ball (to make sure it’s still there), then back to the cue ball. Then, when I take my back-swing I switch my focus to the object ball and watch it go into the pocket (without moving my head, just my eyes) - I am aware what part of the pocket I hit and calibrate it to how it “feels,” especially the acceleration performed.

When I slightly undercut or over-cut that shot I will adjust slightly (speed/toi/left foot) for the next shot. My philosophy is that I need to treat all shots the same to reach my highest level, so if I undercut one shot slightly I take it for granted that I will slightly undercut all the future shots.

This makes me re calibrate my shots

IMMEDIATELY, instead of waiting to actually miss a shot - my mantra is “the 3 C’s” - Constant Consistent Calibration

After a period (the time differs) I won’t have to adjust anymore and will be calibrated to the center of the pocket every time. I see players that are happy just to make the ball, even is it “wobbles in” and don’t make any adjustments.

Almost without fail they will start missing shots and not understand why. Usually these misses can be traced back to several shots BEFORE that are nearly missed, neglecting to make any adjustments.

Controlling the cue with BOTH HANDS is essential to playing flawless pool. There is very little margin of error, so you must keep the cue on a “groove/slot” so it has no chance of deviating left or right - then you are at the caliber that “The 3 C’s” are vitally important to winning tournaments, league playoffs, or major championships.

Jackie Karol (formerly Broadhurst) has been a pool player for as long as she can remember. She was born in Richland, WA and then moved to Philadelphia as a child. In her teen years, when some kids were looking for minimum wage jobs, Jackie was trying to setup money matches in addition to working. From Philadelphia, she moved to Denver, CO and has a degree in Biology from the University of Colorado at Boulder and supported her pool career along the way as a restaurant/bar owner, consultant, black jack and poker dealer and car salesperson.

After years on both amateur and pro tours and numerous tournament wins including both an 8-Ball and Trick Shot National Championships, Jackie has refocused her talents toward helping others reach their dreams in pool. Moving to Chico, CA in 2010, she provides demonstrations and challenge matches for festivals and fundraisers around the country. Along with her “Angels of Billiards”, Jackie has entertained and won over crowds with her personality, skill and ability to make pool accessible to men and women of all ages.

At the Chico Billiards Academy, she offers private and group lessons as well as structured courses to help people go from beginner to competitive player. She also operates a pro shop and carries cues, cases and many other supplies for both players and pool halls.

THE MAKING OF A BILLIARDS CHAMPIONPart 2: Fundamentals

T he Angel of Billiards

FUNDAMENTALSLearning the proper fundamentals is the most critical aspect of a player’s pool game. Mechanics will affect every shot executed. By learning the proper techniques first, you will be able to build upon them easier and be the best that you can be in the shortest amount of time. There is much to learn about having proper mechanics, this article is about the three most critical.

BRIDGESA “bridge” is the hand on the table. It’s purpose is to provide a smooth and stable place for your cue stick, so that you can make your intended contact with the cue ball. For example, if you are right hand dominant, your left hand would be your bridge hand. If it is not stable and smooth, you will hit the cue ball inconsistently, and therefore, will get random results of aim, english and “deflection”.

An “Open Bridge” is the easiest to learn and has its advantages and disadvantages. It allows you to see the shot better because your index finger is not covering the top of the stick. And, by bending your knuckles, you can get more height with this bridge for a high/follow stroke. At the Boys and Girls Club, this is the first bridge I teach. Once they see how easy it is to form that “little V” between their thumb and knuckle, they can quickly make more shots on the table. A disadvantage of an open bridge is that there is a chance that the stick can move upwards because your index finger is not covering it.

A “Closed Bridge” takes time for the muscles in your finger to wrap around the shaft of the cue in a way that is tight enough that it doesn’t move around, but loose enough that it does not inhibit your stroke. In school, I used to practice this with my pen, until my muscles were trained to do it without thinking about it.

STROKING ARM The purpose is to move the cue stick through the ball while keeping it straight and level. Therefore, your arm should be at 90 degrees before contact. If you hold it closer to the ball (less than 90 degrees), you won’t be able to follow through enough. If you hold it farther away from the ball (more than 90 degrees), it is extremely hard to keep it level.

To test to see if you have a consistent, straight and level cue. Place an empty soda or beer bottle on its side on the table. As if the bottle opening was the cue ball, do some practice strokes into the bottleneck without touching the sides of the bottle. You should be able to follow through all the way to the bottom of the bottle without touching it.

STANCEThe objective of your stance is to be stable and solid, while executing your shot. Many times, when nervous about a shot or result, players tend to jump up during the critical point of contact. And as a result, the stick moves unintentionally, and the shot is missed. You can either treat the symptom or treat the source. For quick results and for someone that only plays occasionally, practice staying still until all the balls stop rolling on the table. For the more serious player, treat the problem at the source for lasting results. Your stance should be forward weighted to help prevent your head from popping up.

In the next month’s article I will talk about a stun shot. This is the most basic of shots and should be mastered before learning other shots.

I always look forward to the Tom Scott and there are several reasons for that. One, it is close to where I live and easy to get to. Two, it is pretty darn inexpensive at $35 for you buy in and another few bucks for a room and some grub. Three, and this is one of the best aspects of the tourney, the great players that come each year to have fun playing 8-Ball.

This year marked the twentieth year the tournament has been going and over the years, just like every other tourney in the country, it has had its ups and downs. This year saw a lower turn out than in other years with the men’s division coming in at just under the desired 64 and the ladies division came in with 8 players.

Among the favorites to win, and bid up heavily at the Calcutta, were Jeff Boucher, Harold Prine, Wade Thompson, Cowboy Bob Kollash and Joe Horner. On the ladies side the bidding was just as intense with Amber Foster, Phyllis Fernandez and Madalina Moreno drawing high bids and favored to win.

Friday night went like most every other pre-tournament night with mini tournaments, getting to know each other and greeting old friends and drinking plenty of beer. Did I mention that there was a lot of beer drinking… ouch! Play would begin as usual with two flights for the men’s division on Saturday. The draw was set by Friday night and schedules were handed out so you could make your plans to be at the VFW by

early morning or afternoon. Some were pretty thankful for getting the afternoon flight as many didn’t even get to bed until the wee hours of the morning. Did I mention there was beer involved?

Play was hot and heavy on Saturday with everyone vying for a spot in the top 16 to go to the Sunday finals. Most of the favored players made the cut and a few that were unexpected. One player, Paul Deluna, was at the tournament

for the first time and ended up taking 5th. I’m sure that he will be back as he had a dead stroke but lady luck just wasn’t on his side. It came down to Wade Thompson having to beat Jeff Boucher but the task proved too much and Jeff, once again, prevailed and took the top prize. Talking with Jeff during the day on Saturday he told me that he had won the tournament 7 or 8 times. Well we can add another notch to his case as he shot lights out.

On the ladies side of the equation Rita Hutchinson, Christy Morgan, Cheryl Rosean, Carla Horner, Patty Luedecke, Amber Foster, Madalina Moreno and Phyllis Fernandez fought it out with some very good cueing. The matches came down to Amber Foster trying to knock out Madalina Moreno to no avail as Maddy went on to win and face Phyllis in the final. Maddy had the hammer for the final match and was shooting well. She was relaxed and had found her rhythm and Phyllis had to come in and beat her in two races to 5. Phyllis bore down and came away with the victory but the high level of pool played by all the ladies was fun to watch for sure.

Next year in Libby, Montana is going to be a gathering of players to once again honor Tom Scott and play some amazing pool. Let’s get some new names in the winner’s circle and make some new friends along the way. The tournament is always the one of the last weekends in March so mark your calendar now and let’s play some pool!

The Cue BallSALEM, ORThe April edition of The Cue Ball’s “Win Jim’s Money” saw 44 players turn out for the opportunity to take 1st place and the prize of $260. We had a series of upsets and 4 new winners.

1st place was won by Keith Wolhar, who defeated Kyle Seltmann twice, who had been undefeated on the day. Wolhar also defeated Tricia Heintz who claimed 3rd and Jon Mesa who settled for 4th place.

On Wednesday, April 22nd at Chinook Winds Casino and Resort located in Lincoln City, Oregon, the competitors arrived, took out their cues, chalked them up, and started warming up for the scotch doubles event. When the last ball fell, Dave Randell and Shirley Morgan were the champions of the Masters Division and Roy Chevalier and Denice White were the champions of the Open Division Scotch Doubles. Our first champions of the 11th Annual Regional Tournament have now been crowned and the tournament is officially underway.

The singles events continued on Thursday and Friday with 9-Ball singles and 8-Ball singles. The Masters 9-Ball singles was won by Steve Peterson with Ken Cavener taking 2nd and Dave Randell finished 3rd and Doug McMullin was 4th. The Open 9-Ball singles was won by Brian Knapp with 2nd place going to Roy Chevalier, 3rd – Joe Evinger, 4th – Mike Eklund, 5th/6th – Michael Knight and Michael Morang. In the women’s 9B division, Linda Carter won the Masters, with Becky Mowdy taking 2nd and Eva Hill finishing 3rd. In the Open 9B Division Cathy Duenas was 1st, Denice White was 2nd and Helen Hahn was 3rd. Master Mens 8B Division was won by Steve Peterson with Dave Randell taking 2nd, Ken Cavener was 3rd. On Saturday morning we began our Main Event – TEAMS. First place team was JUST 4 FUN, with team members Jay Coomes, Roy Chevalier, Steve Peterson and Wes Hough. Second place was BANKERS & HOOKERS consisting of Eddie Chastain, Vince Mills, Leonard Blaine, and Bryan Skinner. Third place went to MISFITS with members Brian Knapp, Steve Hay, Tony Newman and Rico Lim, and Fourth place was NITEHAWK with Jay Collins, Bill Fuller, Steve Pulido and George Colo’n.

The Womens teams was won by COUV COUGS consisting of Deb Young, Eunice Sleight, Lourdes Campbell and Eva Hill. Eleanor has played pool for over 18 years and through her hard work, dedication, and experience has become the #21 ranked WPBA player in 2015. She demonstrates that through perseverance and strong will, you can become a top competitor!

It is also because of her love for the sport that she contributes her time with the TWCWT board as their budget and finance director. With over eight years of accounting experience, she utilizes her strong financial management skills with budgeting and reporting all income and expenses for the tour. Kevin is the tournament director for this upcoming year. This is his third year on the board. In the past two years he has helped with the refereeing, raffle and break pot, updated states on the website, helped edit articles, acted as substitute tournament director, and acted as WPBA liaison. Emilyn has been playing on the tour since 2003 and is a national pool competitor. She has actively supported the tour for several years by helping to run tournaments, recruit new pool rooms and players alike. After directing the tour in 2014, her main focus this year is to make all players feel welcome and to make the tour a positive and motivating experience for everyone. Cony has been part of the pool community for 16 years. She has competed in many venues including BCA Nationals, ACS Nationals, our tour, and through the Diablo Valley Pool League. She is an avid promoter of TWCWT and also the sport of billiards in general. She runs local leagues and tournaments for men, women, scotch doubles, and co-directs the Piona Memorial. We have a new winner! Ron Miller, came to The Cue Ball to slake his competitive juices. Worked his way back through the loser’s bracket taking out eventual 4th place winner Tony Tipton. Tipton had the game winner on the hill match, but missed the 9 and Miller managed to convert to win the match.

He met Niles Kapuniai for the 3rd place prize or the chance to meet Rocky Bergquist for W. Niles had waited a little too long and lost his stroke. Miller prevailed to meet Berquist. Miller took out Berquist in short order, claiming the $ 210 1st place price. Bergquist took home $125 for his day spent on the hot seat. Kapuniai took $85 for 3rd and Tipton won $45.

The Pocket in Boise, Idaho held it’s 4th Annual Steiner classic 9 ball tournament Sat April 25. The 40 players who came out had some great Steiner 9 ball competitive “moments” . There were 6 women in the tournament with Mita Luangxaysana and Robin Face finishing in a tie for “top women shooter”. But the most anticipated match of the evening was between Josh “Smitty “ Smith and Jason Melm. Smitty has held the winning title the last three years, and was looking for a fourth win. The two battled fiercely. and Jason Melm grabbed the title. Thanks to all who participated in honoring a great man and the great game of pool. See you next year !

Live streamed from Cue-Topia Billiards in Lakewood WA, Tommy Sliva takes the tri-annaul 220 Open division once again. This is Sliva’s second in a row win in the 220 Open division. Sliva started out in the first round in 1st position over Tom Snider by 2.97 points. From here the top 75% of the field moved to Sudden Death round. Al ong with Sliva to the Sudden Death round came Tom Snider in 2nd position, Larry Francisco and Steve Abraham.Sliva slayed the Sudden Death round once again holding the 1st position by 29.97 points over Snider. This round moved Sliva and Snider to the final round of two matches. The best of the two final matches takes home the title. Sliva shot a 75 in his match which put him 10.85 points over his average. Snider struggles bringing in 27 in his first round. Snider had to bring it to his second match in order to nudge Sliva out of the 1st position. The second round Sliva shot a 62 and Snider stepped his score with a 36, but ended up shy by 5.12 points taking 2nd place

behind Sliva. Congratulations Tommy once again.The 198 division was exciting for sure. In the Intermediate division we had a fierce fight for the first place slot. 12 year Tyler Reygers from Cue-Topia Billiards put the heat on bringing in a 57. Add in his handicap of 88.65 gave him a total of 145.65. Hot on his heels was Ken Smith from the Golden Fleece. Ken’s best score from the 1st round was a 52. Add in his handicap to bring his total to 144.39 for second position. Fran Johnson stayed right in the running shooting a 42 plus her handicap of 98.28 for a total of 140.28 points. That put the top three players from round one within 5 points of one another. Other players that advanced to the Sudden Death round were Ryan Reygers and Elaine Eberly.The sudden death round is just one match. Coming out of the Sudden Death round and moving to the finals were Fran Johnson and Ryan Reygers. Fran’s final top score in the finals was 138.27 points which left Ryan Reygers coming just 2.71 points short to take Johnson out. A spread of only 2.71 points and could have ended up anyone’s game. Doesn’t get much closer than that. Congratulations Fran Johnson and Ryan Reygers.

Now down to the final event, 198 Open division. This was neck to neck all the way. Fighting for the best of three matches it came down to Tom Snider sliding into 4th position with a 135.46. Alan Berglund shot a final score of 140.10, but got nudged out of 2nd place by Tom Miyahira by a mere 0.38 of a point. Miyahira landed second place with Larry Francsico taking home the title shooting 98 point scratch score for a grand total of 155.24. Congratulations Larry. In 2004, the Billiard Congress of America (BCA), sold their league system to a private individual who obtained the rights to use the call letters bca in his league name bca pool league (BCAPL). However, the letters bca do not stand for anything. The Billiard Congress of America wanted to place their focus on the publishing of the World Standardized Rule Book and the production of their annual trade show. This is their main objective.

John Lewis, who ran the BCA/ACS National league systems for 25 years, was hired by disillusioned former Billiard Congress of America league operators to form American CueSports Alliance (ACS), which wanted to continue the “Billiard Congress of America” standard with more attention on the players. We are a national organization which follows the same guidelines and rules as the Billiard Congress of America had. Pacific American CueSports (PACS), is our Regional Association that is run for the players, by the players. We currently have leagues in Portland, Beaverton, Bend, Medford, Olympia, Longview, Vancouver, and Oregon City. The PACS Regional Championships are annually conducted in the Spring at Chinook Winds Casino in Lincoln City, OR. The ACS National Championships are conducted at the Tropicana in Las Vegas on The

Strip every mid-May.In response to a growing number of concerns and comments from

players as to the health of our sport, which we all love, we are in the process of implementing “Dual Sanctioning” of individual players.

What this means is:That if you are currently playing in a league, whether it be a National

league or a City league, you may “Dual Sanction” with the ACS/PACS simply by providing PACS with a “Dual Sanction” application along with $30 ($10 for Nationals, $10 for the Association, and $10 for a processing fee). The Dual Sanction form is available on the PACS website at PacificACS.org

Each “Dual Sanctioned” individual player would be responsible for providing the Association with a league standing sheet displaying individual player performance every week via email to prove the player has played a minimum of 8 weeks in one session in order to qualify for the Regional PACS tournament and be qualified to play at ACS Nationals.

These players will be listed separately as Pacific American CueSports “Dual Sanction” players. If two players from the same team within a league they are playing in “Dual Sanctioned” together, this would give you the two person core for putting together a team for the Regional Tournament.

If you do not have two players from the same team, you would be eligible to be picked up by other teams within the Pacific American CueSports league system.

Our Goal is to accommodate those players who cannot play 3 or 4 nights a week, or those who have families and do not want to play that many nights a week. This way you can play one league and be qualified to attend tournaments in several organizations. This will work if we all work together and do our due diligence to make sure that we take responsibility to ensure that we follow the guidelines. We want to have this in place for the upcoming pool season which runs from June 1st to May 31st. We have just completed our 2014-2015 league season. We are looking forward to an even better league season starting in June, 2015. Currently, we have leagues in Portland, Oregon City, Beaverton, Vancouver, Longview, Olympia, Bend and Medford. Several of the leagues will be starting in July the first week after the 4th of July.

We are instituting a new and exciting thing for the new league season, dual sanctioning of individual players. Be sure to check it out. Hopefully the new change will put the game of pool back in the hands of the players and give them more options.

We greatly appreciate the loyal dedication of our league players and their continued support.

THE BREAKROOM UNDERGROUND - FAIRBANKS, AKSammy Brown went undefeated in the tournament and became the 18 & under Alaska State Jr 9 Ball Champ. He will be representing Alaska in the Jr Nationals in Vegas. He received a McDermott cue from McDermott for winning the tournament.Ethan Westlake took 2nd in the tournament and won a Star cue, free from McDermott. He finished highest in his age category and became the 14 &

under Alaska Jr 9 Ball Champ. Ethan will also be representing Alaska in the 14 & under boys division at nationals.Brandon Sammons took 3rd in the tournament and won a Lucky cue free from McDermott.
