FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESKAt Blackpool’s Imperial Hotel on July 5 2011the curtain came down on the 19th verysuccessful World Eightball Pool Champi-onships, hosted by the English Pool Associ-ation.

The World Championships along with theWorld Masters event as always attractedmany of the best players on the planet andenabled participants an opportunity torepresent their country at the mostprestigious “World Rules” event on the cuesports calendar.

This year the event was highlighted by theintroduction of live streaming for the finalstages on the world wide web. It proved agreat success. The game was beamed intohomes, and in some cases, literally the palmof the hand, in countries that hadn’tpreviously enjoyed the championships untilthe distribution of DVDs a couple of monthsafter the event.

It was particularly good for Australia thisyear where ‘World Rules’ Eightball is themajor cue sport played. Enthusiasts wereable to organise gatherings in local clubs towatch their hero play in finals late at nightand in the early hours of the morning.Moving forward, live streaming will be agreat promotion for the game throughoutthe world.

During the Championships, the WorldEightball Pool Federation held its AGM formember countries. It was well attended andI am pleased to report some of the keyinitiatives that were supported by themembers for the future:-

● Increase prize money for both the 2012World Championships and WorldMasters events.

● Commitment to the active promotion ofWorld Rules Eightball in Africa.

● Support for the creation of the BritishLions squad which will tour each yearpromoting and playing internationalmatches overseas.

In October this year, the Lions will travel toSydney, Australia for a five Test match series

against Australia.

In 2012 it is hoped they will play in Africaand then in 2013 back to Perth Australia tocelebrate 20 years of the WEPF in the placewhere it all began.

In 2014 we have aspirations for them totravel and play matches in China.

● The WEPF members also approved fortalks to proceed with FFB, the major cuesports body in France, who were invitedto part ic ipate at our 2012 WorldChampionships. FFB representativesexpressed interest for their elite playersto be able to participate for our worldtitles. We would be very happy for themto participate and be part of the WEPFfamily.

On the subject of another matter whichseems to be very topical in Eightball circlesat present, I reported that in early June thisyear I was invited to attend a meeting inLondon on July 15, 2011 “Subject 8Ball’sFuture”.

Yes, of course I was interested. Butunfortunately the invitation closed byrequesting I “not release the information tothe WEPF or any of its officials” Faced withthis dilemma I could not accept. However,on a positive note, I make the statementthat the WEPF is willing to listen to anyideas which may result in the bettermentand promotion of the game of Eightball.

This may be by the pooling of humanresource with like minded organisationsworking together with the WEPF. Orlooking at rules of similar pool disciplinesand seeing if it is possible, with slightcompromise and change, creating a gameof Eightball that unifies and opens up thesport to one massive world population ofEightball Pool players.

Until the next edition I wish all readersmuch enjoyment playing pool and ask youto look out for the British Lions Test Seriestaking place from October 17 to October 22.

ALL’S WELL WITH THE WORLDWelcome to the second edition of WorldPool. And judging by the response ourefforts were well received which is alwaysgratifying to know.

However, we don’t intend resting on ourlaurels and will endeavour to makeimprovements with every subsequent issue.

Certainly, there has been plenty happeningon and off the table. Not all of it good butwe all have to take the rough with thesmooth.

Dissenting voices are usually the ones thatshout loudest while the rest simply knuckledown and do the hard work.

Certainly there has been plenty to getenthused about since the last edition ofWorld Pool. The Barcelo World 8-Ball PoolChampionships at Blackpool’s ImperialHotel were a great success despite theabsence of the customary recordedtelevision highlights on Sky TV.

Instead, live streaming was available for thelatter stages of the men’s singles andcertainly added to the excitementgenerated in the UK and overseas.

Like with most innovations, there are areasto improve upon but this particularconcept appears to have a lengthy shelf life.

There was certainly nothing wrong with themain product - i.e. the championshipsthemselves. Stoke’s Adam Davis was apopular and deserving first time winner ofthe men’s world title while EmmaCunningham finally got her hands on theladies’ trophy again after so long in SueThompson’s shadow.

Who would have forecast Thompson’srelative early exit or the 10-2 drubbing of

defending men’s champion Mick Hill by PhilHarrison in the semi-final? Indeed, Ireland’sthoroughly merited men’s team triumphwas to be applauded while the overallperformances of Australia showed they canbe power houses in the game.

The formation of a first ever British Lionssquad to travel Down Under is anotherwelcome innovation we are going to hearmore of in future months. Australia thisyear, South Africa and East Africa in 2012and maybe even China in years to come.Exciting times indeed.

Away from the international arena, domestic pool shows no sign of decliningin popularity. And he may have lost out ona fourth world title but Gareth Pottsremains the player to beat on the StrachanUK Tour.

You can read inside these pages how hesecured a 13th career Tour victory and washeading for a hat-trick this year andnumber 14 until he ran into Ben Davies.

Club Opens two and three have alsoprovided new winners in 2011, a trend thatseems likely to continue because of thestrength in depth of our game.

Indeed, despite the prophets of doompredicting the demise of the game, there remains a healthy appetite to potballs from grass roots through to thehighest levels.

Enjoy World Pool and enjoy the game forwhat it is.......

ADAM IS FIRST MAN OF POOLDELIGHT FOR DAVIS AFTER BECOMING WORLD CHAMPIONAdam Davis was higher than BlackpoolTower after becoming Barcelo World 8-BallPool champion for the first time. The Stokestar survived a spirited fight back by 2009winner Phil Harrison to lift the trophy andclaim the £8,000 first prize.

Davis became the 13th different winnersince Geordie Kevin Wright lifted thetrophy following the inaugural tournamentin 1993. It was a superb display by theformer European champion who was neverbehind in a near three hour contest.

“I had so many demons in my headthroughout the match,” said Davis, whobegan the event seeded four.

“I twitched so many times but I just kepttelling myself to believe. Fortunately, I man-aged to hold myself together at the end.”

Davis, twice a semi-finalist, seemed to havebroken Harrison's resistance. He led 7-4after the Cambridgeshire window cleanerpotted his last yellow but also one ofDavis's red balls. However, Harrison hitback and tied the scores at 8-8. And therewere doubts creeping in as Davis concededthe 16th frame after missing the last yellowdown a side cushion.

Instead, he showed a champion’s resolve, opened up a two frame advantage andthen cleared up after Harrison kept hishopes alive in frame 19.

“I just tried to tell myself I was clearing upin the club,” smiled Davis at the memory ofhis winning clearance.

“It’s just a great feeling to be worldchampion. It’s something I’ve always

wanted to achieve and to do it at arelatively young age is fantastic. “It cer-tainly proves I was right to ‘jack’ in theteam to concentrate on the singles.”

Davis’s delight was shared by girlfriendGemma, dad Alan, mum Janet, stepdadTim, sister Amy plus a host of friends whobraved M6 motorway rush hour traffic toreach the venue.

“I really drew on their support when thingsstarted to turn against me,” added Davissucceeding Mick Hill as world champion.

“I haven’t thought what I am going to dowith the money. Save it for a rainy day, maybe?

Harrison, watched by toddler son George, admitted: ”I deserved to lose. “I tried myhardest but I couldn’t get anything downfrom the break. Adam took his chances andI didn’t.

“You never want to be second best, doyou? But I’ll be back next year to try again.”

Harrison reached the final in devastatingstyle, knocking out Hill 10-2, who had beenheavily tipped to retain his crown. Hilllooked subdued as Harrison turned on thestyle in a one-sided contest.

In contrast, Davis came from 5-2 and 6-3down to beat Australian Ben Nunan 10-8.

Bidding to become the first Australianwinner since Quinten Hann in 1999, Nunanshowed his class with some excellentprevious wins. He knocked out ClaytonAttard 8-3 in the last 16 after the Europeanchampion stunned second seed and threetime winner, Gareth Potts, 8-4 in the last32.

Potts took a gamble in deciding not toparticipate in the team event as in previousyears. The move worked for Davis but Pottsdiscovered too late that Attard possesses allthe credentials of a top player.

Qualifier Lee Anderson couldn’t quitematch Craig Waddingham’s display inreaching the last four in 2010. However, he

made it to the last eight before losing 9-6to Nunan. Potts and Gareth Hibbott (six)were the only top eight seeds to lose theiropening matches but Jason Twist (five) andMarc Farnsworth (eight) didn’t progressbeyond the last 16.

Newry cue queen Emma Cunningham regainedher Barcelo World ladies 8-ball singles title aftera six year wait at the Imperial Hotel

The 24-year-old second seed overwhelmed firsttime finalist Renata Delahunty 8-2 to pocket an£1,600 top prize.

Both players suffered nerves, especially AussieDelahunty, in a match that could hardlybe described as a classic. But that wasn’tCunningham's concern after four previous finaldisappointments against pre tournamentfavourite Sue Thompson.

“I am chuffed,” she smiled after being re-united with the trophy.”

“It was a struggle early on because both of uswere nervous. All those teenage years when Ihad no fear are gone,” she laughed. “Peoplewere telling me I was favourite but I didn’t seeit that way.

“I knew how well Renata had played through-out the week and the score line does not reallyreflect the match."

Cunningham won five successive frames after41-year-old Delahunty trailed only 3-2.

“I have suffered with nerves throughout mycareer,” admitted Delahunty. “Just when youthink you’re over them, they come back again.

“I had my opportunities but Emma is a worthyworld champion.” Cunningham's victory com-pleted a unique treble of World, World Mastersand European Championship victories.

“The only one I haven’t won was the ladiesteam and we lost 8-7 in the final! But Cun-ningham, an apprentice broadcast engineer, had little time to celebrate her success.

“I’m doing a degree at the moment and have acouple of pieces of work to hand in,” sheadmitted. “I brought my books to do somestudying. But I haven’t done much because I

kept winning.”

Delahunty became the first Australian for 18years to reach the ladies singles final. The 41-year-old from Adelaide stunned former WorldMasters champion Sharon Dickson 7-2.

Delahunty, whose husband Mick was amember of the Aussies’ 1996 winning men’steam, equalled the achievement of NatalieFroling beaten in the 1993 final by LindaLeadbitter.

“I’ve got big shoes to fill,” she said of formerAussie cue queen Froling. "But I am excited bythe prospect. It’s been a dream of mine to getthrough to the final and now I've made it.

“I put in a lot of practice before I came outhere," added Delahunty, a world championshipregular for the past five years.

“I kept dragging my husband out with me topractice.”

TEAM IRELAND ARE KING OF CUES AGAIN

Republic of Ireland are the new men’s teamchampions after ending England's five yearreign as kings of cues.

Nerveless Simon Fitzmaurice sank the winning8-Ball at the expense of England skipper LeeKendall to complete an 8-5 success.

The historic pot sparked jubilant scenes asFitzmaurice's team mates jumped into thearena to spark wild celebrations.

It was Team Ireland’s first victory since 2005and prompted an eloquent victory speech bymanager John Magee.

“You don't expect to win when you are playingEngland because they have been the best teamin the world, said sporting Magee.

“However, sometimes they don’t always winand this time it was our turn. We made a vowat the start of the week to believe in ourselvesand stick together. We were a band of 11brothers out there.

“You can’t always play your best pool and wewere prepared to play dirty if necessary.“But the standard in the world is so close now.We won six of our matches 11-10,” addedMagee.

“So to come out on top is phenomenal.”

The new champions were behind only once asJohn Roe and Jordan Church gave the holdersa 2-1 lead. But the Irish led 4-3 at the end ofthe first session and managed to keep in front. The turning point came in frame 10 as NeilToms missed the final 8-Ball to level the scoresat 5-5. Robert Brady took advantage andthough Robert Mulcahy lost to Gareth Hibbott,Ronan Fay and Fitzmaurice ensured Ireland'svictory.

“We had enough chances to win two matches, never mind one,” said disappointed Kendall.“It was an extremely bad performance but Idon't want to take anything away from Ireland. They took all the chances we didn’t.”

England defeated Australia 11-8 in the semi-finals while Ireland, who only finished fifthafter the round robin stages, losing four oftheir nine matches, knocked out India 11-8.Northern Ireland’s Nigel Craig topped therankings with 19 wins from his 27 matches.

Scotland’s Darren Matthew, Keith Walls ofNorthern Ireland and India’s Videsh Sharbawalall achieved 18 wins from 27 frames while theRepublic’s David McQuillan clinched 18 from26.

Barbara Taylor kept her nerve as England'sLadies regained their team title.

Beaten by Renata Delahunty in the last eightof the singles, Taylor was left to play thedeciding frame after Jo Kent beat CarlySmith to tie the scores at 7-all. And afteropening the final with victory over WorldMasters champion and World finalist, EmmaCunningham, she came up trumps againstNatalie Madden. For Northern Ireland, itwas final disappointment for a secondsuccessive year.

They avenged their 2010 final defeat byWales in the last four while England put out2007 champions Australia.

Results from team final: Taylor bt Cunningham,Amy Beauchamp bt Michelle Rooney, Smith bt AprilRooney, Michelle Brown lost to Madden, SharonWright lost to Kent. Cunningham bt Smith, MRooney bt Taylor, A Rooney bt Beauchamp, Wrightbt Madden, Brown bt Kent. Beauchamp btCunningham, M Rooney bt Jackie Baker, Brown btA Rooney, Taylor bt Madden, Smith lost to Kent.

Defeat in the final was certainly disappoint-ing for the Ulster girls. They were the onlyside with a 100 percent record from theround robin stage, winning all seven games.

In contrast, England and Australia both

finished with two defeats. The hosts lost9-6 to Northern Ireland in the group phaseand also went down by the odd frame todefending champions Wales.

At the other end of the table, Scotland,Republic of Ireland and Malta only won onegame each. Certainly, the Scots havesuffered losing Sue Thompson and LynetteHorsburgh from their side in recent seasons.

England's Amy Beauchamp enjoyed thesatisfaction of sharing top spot in therankings with World Champion and WorldMasters winner, Emma Cunningham. Bothgirls lost just four of their 21 frames for anaverage of 80.95 percent.

Third place went to Welsh internationalCollette Henriksen who finished with arecord of played 21, won 16. Carly Smithand Sharon Dickson were joint fourth with a71.42 percentage from a 15-21 record.

Lauren Jelly attained the best record of theimproving Aussie squad. She played 19frames winning 14 while Renata Delahunty'srun to the singles final probably contributedto a record of played 17, won 10.

South Afr ica ’s best performer wasAntoinette Van Wyk who was 11th overallwith a 57.14 percentage. Van Wyk claimed12 wins in 21 starts.

LET’S BE FRANKCOSTELLO HAS WINNING HABIT

Frank Costello became only the thirdplayer to retain his WEPF World EightBallChampionship junior title at Blackpool'sImperial Hotel.

The talented teenager defeated Englishrival Joe O’Connor 8-5 in the final.

In fact, the match was a re-run of theirEuropean Junior Championship clash inMalta last February. Unfortunately forO’Connor the result was the same, a threeframe winning margin to the Londonwonder boy.

Just for good measure Costello alsocaptained England Juniors to victory in theteam final against Malta. Costello, whoplays in the Waterloo Pool League, joinedan exclusive club after his latest triumph.

Jordan Church was the last youngster toretain his junior crown with back to backvictories in 2003 and 2004.

Church’s reign followed on from DarrenMatthew's domination of the tournamentfrom 2000-02. I n d e e d , t h e n o wScott ish senior international is the onlyplayer to complete a hat-trick of victories.

Welsh hope Declan O’Callaghan was theonly non English player in the semi-finalsand suffered a 7-3 defeat against theeventual champion.

Former world champions Gareth Potts andChris Melling are previous winnersof the junior singles.

There was also an English winner ofthe Under 21 title. Nottinghamshire’sAshley Radford held his nerve to beat

Scottish rival Ryan Fleming 8-7. Indeed, itwas an emotional victory for the 20 yearold from Hucknall.

Radford dedicated his success to friendWayne Parsonage who died in a roadaccident last winter.

“Wayne was a great guy and is sorelymissed,” said Radford. “This win was forhim.”

Radford reached the final with victory overMaltese hope, Maverick Zammit. At theother end of the age scale, Tony Kaydefeated Australia's Terry Bond 8-6 to winthe over 50's crown. Andy Rigby cued hisway to victory for Wales in the wheelchairsingles final, defeating England's TheresaSheridan 5-3.

There is so much happening at the moment Ijust don’t know where to start.

I am delighted to see the second issue of WorldPool magazine. The first issue was a greatsuccess and enjoyed excellent reviews.

The 2011 WEPF World Championships inBlackpool were again a huge success. This wasdown to a dedicated team of organisers led byTournament Director Alan Benton and AdvisorGeorge Harwood, the backroom staff of MikePerkins, Paula Landers, Yvonne Armitage, StanGrant (Table Engineer), Sue Mitchell, JasonDavies and of course the Referees.

The work this team put in was, as always, phenomenal and on behalf of the EPA, I wouldlike to thank them all.

On the playing side it was refreshing to seedifferent teams and individuals winning. Thebiggest shock was surely Sue Thompson's earlyexit from the Ladies singles.

We must commend the commitment of theoverseas teams for their continued support ofthe Championships and we relish their returnnext year. Although the tournament wasn’ttelevised, it did go out on live streaming andwhat a success that was.

The Australian teams certainly commentedhow fantastic it was that family and friendsback home were able to watch them play live. This was a major move forward and the WEPFand EPA will look into further development oflive streaming.

At the Championships’ presentation eveningcame the announcement of the formation ofthe British Lions. What a fabulous opportunitythis is for all players to be part of a team thathas the chance to travel to Australia in 2011,and hopefully Africa in 2012 and maybe evenChina.

The development of the Lions could alsoincorporate Ladies, Over 50's and Youth teamsin future years and provide players anopportunity to travel the world and play pool. The qualifiers for this year’s event have nowbeen completed and the English representation

is made up of grass roots county players.

What a great advert for our county set-up andjust goes to show that the opportunity is therefor everybody. Congratulations go to all theplayers who have qualified for the inauguralBritish Lions Team.

The time of year is now upon us again when avast number of EPA members make theirannual pilgrimage to Great Yarmouth for twomore weekends of pool. In October, theInterleague Knock Out Cup takes place and hasonce again been over-subscribed.

Our tournament organisers have had a majorheadache in reducing the 170 plus applicationsdown to 96 places. It’s a big problem but a niceone to have.

This is followed in November with theChampion of Champions event and the Ladies’Knock Out Cup competition. Early indicationsare showing that both could have record entrynumbers.

With EPA ID card membership also hitting newhighs the development of the World Rulesset-up just moves on and on. The same canalso be said for our counterparts in Scotlandwhere the growth of the SEPF continues toamaze all with new Regions joining andmembership numbers on the increase.

The EPA, led by the Executive Committee, hasa strong infrastructure and continues to buildon solid foundations. The ExecutiveCommittee works hard for its members, developing and promoting the game of pooland providing competitions that you, theplayers want to enter.

All of the above is only possible with thecommitment of players, officials and organisersalike, and I would like to saythank you to everyone foryour support.

Regards

Geoff WilsonEPA Chairman

The development continues...

MALTA HUNGRY FOR MORE INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS

After winning the European Men’s TeamChampionships in 2002 and 2008 and the1999 European Juniors, Maltese pool playersdeveloped an appetite for capturinginternational honours.

As a result there have been two furtheroutstanding achievements so far in 2011.

L a s t F e b r u a r y , a t t h e E u r o p e a nChampionships hosted in his own country,Maltese number one, Clayton Attard, left hismark on the singles event, beating formerworld champion Carl Morris.

In doing so, Attard became the first Maltesepool player to win an international singlesevent. Since a young age, Attard’s talentswere evident and thanks to continueddedication and passion for the game, herealised his dream of becoming Europeanchampion.

Now a member of the Strachan IPA Tour andthanks to his Euro triumph, he has beenaccepted as a guest member of the inauguralBritish Lions team travelling to Australia laterthis year.

In addition to Attard another impressive resultwas achieved this year by the Maltese Under21 team at the WEPF World Championshipsin Blackpool.

For the first time ever the Maltese boys werecrowned world title winners beating 8-Ball

pool heavyweights England in a thrilling final.

Maverick Zammit produced great formthroughout the tournament and withexcellent support play from, Thurston Grixtiand Matthias Mallia, they helped engraveMalta’s name on the perpetual trophy.

There have also been other encouragingresults achieved this year. In the EuropeanChampionships, four Maltese teams: Under18’s, Under 21’s, B Team and Masters’ teamsreached the final of their respective category.

And at the World Championships, the Under18’s (juniors) side progressed to the finalbefore losing to England. All in all anexcellent year so far with the promise of moreto come in the future.

Politics may continue to divide the pool fraternitybut rival bodies in Wales have pledged to worktogether for the betterment of the sport.

After some tough negotiations and a lot of workby hard working individuals, the Pool Federationof Wales and the Welsh Pool Association haveannounced a merger for “the benefit of poolplayers in Wales.”

A joint committee has been set up to co-ordinateall pool events in Wales irrespective of their rulescode. This major breakthrough is seen asstrengthening the ‘World Rules’ squadrepresenting the PFW at the 2012 WorldChampionships.

The committee will also work to develop theladies and Under 21 teams and bring them underthe same umbrella.

We would like to thank the World Eight Ball PoolFederation and the European Eight Ball PoolFederation for their support advice and timeassisting the merger talks, especially GeorgeHarwood and Alan Benton.

The PFW website has now been re-directed towpa8ball.co.uk for purposes of information andcompetition details. Further information aboutour new qualification systems can be obtainedvia Wayne Smith at [email protected]

C’mon Aussie, C’monThis year’s WEPF World Eightball PoolChampionships proved to be one of themost successful ever for the Australiansquad in 19 years participating in thetournament.

Every team made at least the semi-finalswhile the Senior side became worldchampions. Unfortunately, apart from theSeniors who defeated England in the final, all the other Aussie sides lost in the lastfour to the old enemy. 3-1 to the Poms!

All the more reason we can’t wait to havethe British Lions Team on Australian soil inOctober this year to avenge these defeatswithout having to wait for next year’sWorld Championships.

The British Lions - Aussie Test Seriespromises to be a great promotion forAustralian Pool and hopefully is enjoyed bypool enthusiasts around the world on livestreaming.

It will be played during a time when thecream of Australian Eightball players cometogether for the Mitchell BilliardsAustralian Championships in one ofAustralia’s most beautiful cities, Sydney.

Live streaming will take place throughout10 days of competition at the Nationals ona feature table every day and each final onOctober 27.

Another feature of the Championships willbe the return of the New Zealand Seniorsteam for a Test series during the sameperiod.

Individually, Australia also prospered at theWorld Championships.

Ben Nunan became the most successfulAustralian individual men’s player byreaching the semi-final since Quinten Hannwon the title in 1999. And there was nodisgrace losing to champion Adam Davis.

Renata Delahunty emulated Natalie Frolingas the most successful individual womanplayer in our World Championship historyby making the final.

Another highlight for Australian Eightballwas to see Tracy Wessling refereethroughout the championships.

Although Eightball “World Rules” is by farthe most participated cue sport played inAustralia, New South Wales - where thispool festival is taking place, is the Statewith the least participation, but member-ship levels are increasing.

Hence, it is ideal that we showcase thisinaugural British Lions event. It will takeplace in an elegant auditorium, The Cube, with lots of passing patronage to amassive adjoining Community Club.

From these National Championships,Australian team selection will take placefor the sides to travel to England for the2012 World Championships.

Teams will be announced on presentationnight on October 28 with team names onthe AEBF website the next day.

If the mid-year Australian Eight-BallFederation meeting of delegates was anyindication, there is a good chancethat Australia will increase its travellingsquad to the 2012 Worlds to include anUnder 21s Team. This would ensurerepresentation in all team events.

A decision will be ratified at the AEBFAnnual General Meeting on October 29,2011.

Australia continues in its commitment tosupporting the World Championships andthe WEPF.

Ireland on top of the World! The Irish Men's Team are the 2011 WorldEight-ball Pool Champions following theirhistoric win over defending championsEngland in this year's World Championshipsfinal. The win saw Ireland claim a secondworld title in six years and who would betagainst them repeating the trick in 12 monthstime?

This year's Championships was the mostthrilling for years with the group stageswitnessing stunning comebacks, closematches and a significant rise in the generaloverall standard.

After the group stages Ireland faced NorthernIreland in a play-off match and just squeezedthrough.

At 9-5 up Northern Ireland missed an easyblack and the match turned in that instant.Ireland came storming back and won in athrilling decider to set up a semi final clashwith India.

A great start saw Ireland advance into a 4-0lead and though India came back into thematch they were never to catch the Irish whoadvanced to their third final in six years.

The other side of the draw saw Australia over-whelm Malta in a play-off before being pippedin a high quality semi-final clash with England.

As often happens the standard in the final wasa little below that of the group stages, thoughIreland weren't be too bothered by that.Players on both sides struggled in the earlypart of the match to acclimatise to the bigger8-foot table and to the pressure of playing infront of the cameras.

It's fair to say, however, that Ireland copedbetter than England with the occasion andtook a higher proportion of the chances thatcame their way. Leading 4-3 at the mid-session interval, they went on to win 8-5.

Te am Manag e r J o hn Mage e wa sunderstandably ecstatic afterwards. "This isjust awesome. Every team dreams of winningthe World Championships and there is simply

no better way to do that than to beat Englandin the final.

“England are the standard-bearers for thegame and are always the team to beat. We arethrilled and delighted as we have worked sohard for this.

“Last year we lost to England in the semi-final,so to come back in 2011 and win is verysatisfying. This shows what is possible withpreparation, hard work and a professionalapproach.

“I’m so pleased for the Irish players whoarrived in Blackpool ready to make the hardyards and give ourselves a chance. We had aplan and we stuck to it”.

The Ireland team consisted of: Robert Brady(Captain), John McMahon, Rod Clifford, PaMoorhouse, Simon Fitzmaurice, Barry Hough,David McQuillan, Robert Mulcahy, Ronan Fayand Karl O'Donoghue.

The Irish team was bowled over by thereaction the win received back home. This wasthe first year the event was streamed live anda lot of credit goes to the Stream Team whoallowed family, friends and pool fans in Irelandto follow what was happening in Blackpool.

Attention now turns to the 2012 EuropeanChampionships which will be held in Dublinand the question of whether Ireland can claima European crown?

The event is certainly wide open, withEngland, Malta and defending championsWales sure to be right there in the mix. Itpromises to be very exciting.

Men’s Team results:

Play-offs: Australia bt Malta 11-3, Republic ofIreland bt Northern Ireland 11-10.

Semi-finals: England bt Australia 11-8,Republic of Ireland bt India 11-8.

Final: Republic of Ireland bt England 8-5.

LIONS ON THE PROWLIN AUSTRALIA

It’s seven years since an English 8-Ball Pool team played theAustralians on their own tables.

But the Brits are going back Down Under later thisyear and the Aussies will be ready for them.

Organisers have confirmed the old sportingfoes will play a series of Test matchesin Sydney this October when theBritish 8-Ball Lions will re-start the

long standing rivalry between theproud nations.

The Lions squad will be fully representative ofthe UK plus a little help from Europeanchampion, Clayton Attard from Malta, who willguest for the team.

This will be the first of annual trips by theLions to other continents as part of thedevelopment plans of the World EightballPool Federation as they support theirworldwide membership.

In 2012, the squad will go to South and EastAfrica followed by a return trip to Perth,Australia in 2013, to celebrate the 20thanniversary of the foundation of theworld federation. Plans are also advanced

to take the Lions to China or an Asiancountry in 2014.

The concept of the Lions is not just about the elite players, it will give the grass rootpool players an equal chance to become an important part of the project.

There will be changes in the future as the plans develop but the format used this yearwill continue to be a vital part of the how the squad is chosen.

The top level of the 2011 squad will come from players who are supporting theirnational teams, with tour leader Wayne Smith and Paul Hawkins coming from Wales.

There was a qualifying event organised by the English Pool Association involving theirnational team members plus the leading player from each of their counties.

Remarkably it was the county players who came out on top with Gavin Lomax ofLeicester and Scott Waring of Gloucester. winning through to the Lions squad.

For amateur players, another qualifier was held in 19 leading pool clubs throughoutBritain to provide a further three members, representing the grass roots of the game.

With no professionals allowed entry, the response from the amateurs was excellent, giving them an opportunity to reach the national finals and a place in the lions squadfor Australia.

After hard fought national finals, the qualifying players were: Darren Matthew fromAberdeen, Liam Stanley of Nottingham and Bradford’s Jason Murgatroyd.

The eight strong British Lions squad will depart Heathrow for Sydney on October 14th

to start a new chapter for the sport.

The team will play four test matches against Australia at their National finals, not aneasy task for the players but one that they will remember for a long time.

Details of the programme and Live Streaming times will be published onwww.wepf.org.

Qualifiers for next years Lions trip to Africa will commence in February 2012with the final squad announced at the World Eightball Pool Championships,Blackpool at the end of June.

Full details of venues and times for qualifiers will be published on all of thewepf websites.

RAYBONE MASTERS WHARNETO SECURE WORLD CROWNBlack County cue star Neil Raybone madea notable career breakthrough inBlackpool by becoming World Masters8-Ball Pool champion.

Raybone from Willenhall defeatedStafford’s Robert Wharne 10-5 in the finalat the Imperial Hotel.

The 26-year-old West Midlander has beenone of the game's most consistent playerswithout ever landing a major title.

However, despite a gruelling schedule,Raybone came out on top to claim a£5,000 first prize.

“My first thought is just one of relief,”said Raybone clutching the trophy.

“I’ve been so close before, including fourIPA Tour finals, so to win this tournamentis a great feeling, I was desperate to getover that line.”

Raybone, beaten 8-7 by Phil Harrison inthe World Championships at the samevenue, couldn’t complete his semi-finalagainst Mark Bowen on Sunday eveningas expected and had to return this morn-ing.

But the delighted IT account managerreturned to win 9-7 but only after Bowenrecovered from 5-0 down to level at 6-6.

Wharne stunned Dudley's worldchampion Mick Hill 9-2 in his semi-final.But apart from a brief flurry by recoveringfrom 4-1 down to level at 4-4 he couldn'tstick with Raybone.

“I’m pleased for Neil because he has beendue one,” said Hill. “Now, he’s won Idon’t feel too bad about my defeat."

Such is the open draw format of thecompetition that the leading contendersaren’t guaranteed an easy passage to thefinal. And so it turned out.

Hill knocked out Phil Harrison 8-5 in thelast 16 while three-time world championGareth Potts removed another dangerouscontender, Tom Cousins, 8-6 at the samestage.

THIRTEEN NOT UNLUCKY FOR GARETH

TOUR TWO REPORT

Lee Kendall doesn’t subscribe to the theorythat history never repeats itself. But theEngland captain has firsthand experience thatlightning really can strike twice.

So remarkably for a nationwide event thatattracts nearly 200 players, the opening twoStrachan IPA Tour finals featured the same twocuemen. Sadly for Kendall the results of bothwere the same-defeat to Stoke on Trent rivaland friend, Gareth Potts.

“I should have won,” reflected the 41-year-olddad of one whose last Tour win came in 1997when he defeated Darren Appleton 8-7.

“I was 5-1 up but lost 8-5 in the end.”

However, it was a welcome return to form forthe ‘Fox’ who came close to quitting lastseason. “I was losing to players I shouldn’thave done,” he admitted.

“So, I said to myself either you pack in. Or youput in the practice and give yourself a chance.

“I took the latter option. I started practisingabout five hours a day, usually locking myself inthe room, trying to sort out my cue action.

“Occasionally though I’ll get in a few of thelocal lads like, Rob Wharne and LiamWhite, togive me a game. Even though I lost bothfinals to Gareth, I go into matches believing Iam going to win rather than I’m probablygoing to lose.”

For Potts, it was Tour title number 13 of hiscareer following on from Tour One when heestablished a new record for the number ofTour victories. He now has two more thanKeith Brewer and four more than Mick Hill andDarren Appleton. And Potts has chalked up hisbaker’s dozen in just seven years. “It’s a bigachievement for me,” he said. “Hopefully, Ihave got a few more left in me yet.

“It was amazing that Lee and I both reachedthe final again.” Potts has triumphed in at leastone Tour every season since 2004 apart from abarren year in 2006. He enjoyed a relativelysmooth passage to the title, including animpressive 7-2, last 16 win over Ronan

McCarthy, a 7-3 quarter-final success againstGareth Hibbott and an 8-5 semi-final successover Ben Davies.

Kendall, who also won Tour events in the1993-94 season, beating such legends as SteveSaunders and Wayne Fryer, knocked out OlyBale 8-2 in the semis.

He also enjoyed a confidence boosting 7-6 last16 victory against fifth seed Lee Clough. PhilHarrison, the last player before Potts to claim aTour win.

RIMINGTON FALLS TO JJ IN TOUR FINALE

CLUB OPEN TWO REPORT

JJ Faul is no stranger to winning Club Openevents. But it’s just been a long time betweentitles for the Liverpool based, South Africanborn cue man.

Nearly nine years after his previous success, theexperienced 34-year-old triumphed again. Hedid so with a 6-5 final win over JasonRimington after an equally close deciding semi-final frame success over Rob Wharne.

“The Club events are obviously not as hard towin as the Main Tour,” said Faul who runs JJ’sPool Club in Fazackerley.

“First to four or five gives you a better chancethan if you’re playing a good player over alonger distance.

“But there are still some very good players outthere so I was pleased to win. There are a lot ofyoungsters coming up though I don’t feel tooold just yet.”

Faul, who first joined the IPA Tour after comingover from South Africa in 2001, won the lasttwo frames after trailing Bolsover basedRimington 5-4.

In his semi-final against 2011 World Mastersrunner-up Wharne, he led 4-0, survived hisStaffordshire rival’s terrific fight back andedged into the final.

Faul reckons his final win was his fourth Clubcrown with the other three coming at the startof the decade.

And he’s looking for a few more wins beforethe end of the year after returning to Touraction in 2011.

“There are quite a few lads at the club who areon the Tour and so I decided to give it anothergo,” he explained.

“I’d also like to get in the top 64 on the MainTour,” he stated. “Even though I run my ownpool club it isn’t always easy to find time topractise.

“But I do try and find time to hit a few balls.Fortunately the club is going quite well.“It’s been open now about 18 months andword is getting out that we’re around.Fortunately, there was no trouble round herewhen the riots were on in Liverpool.”

Frankie Costello, winner of Club Open One,went down 4-3 in the last 64 to Craig Kendall.Runner-up and former snooker professional,Richard King, reached the quarters beforelosing 6-4 against Rimington.

Malta’s European champion, Clayton Attard, suffered a 4-1 defeat against Jack Whelan, alsoin the last 64. Whelan progressed to the lasteight before becoming one of Faul’s sevenvictims.

DAVIES DENIES POTTS TOUR TREBLE

TOUR THREE REPORT

39

Ben Davies ended Gareth Potts’ bid for a thirdconsecutive IPA Strachan UK Tour title. And noone can say the Welsh star didn’t deserve hissuccess after a gruelling weekend of pool atDaventry.

The 26-year-old from Swansea held his nervein a tense final frame to score a famous 8-7win. In doing so, he denied Potts a Tour hat-trick after beating Lee Kendall in the first twoevents of 2011.

Indeed, it was Potts’ first defeat in a Tour finalsince losing 8-6 to Jason Twist in 2003.Thirteen victories followed before this Daventrydefeat. However, Davies thought he’d blownhis chance of a maiden Tour triumph andavenging an 8-5 semi-final defeat to his Stokeon Trent rival.

“I was 7-4 up but came up with two drybreaks,” he recalled. “Gareth did three suc-cessive dishes and all of a sudden it was 7-all.

“And when he potted a ball off his break in thedecider I thought I had lost my chance.”

Instead, the triple former world champion wasforced with a tricky final clearance. Eventually,he snookered himself and subsequently missedthe eight-ball to allow Davies back to the table.

Davies didn’t need a second invitation with histwo visits to get his hand on the trophy after acouple of previous near misses.

“I couldn’t really believe I won in the endbecause I’d played as poorly earlier in thetournament than I think I’d done in any event.“Several players should have put me out butdidn’t. Phil Harrison, for example, had a blackto beat me 7-5 in the last 16 but I escaped thatone as well.”

In fact, from the last 32 onwards, Davies wasinvolved in a number of monumental matches.Knocking out 93rd ranked Lee Grout 7-6,Davies then edged past 2009 world championPhil Harrison 7-6. Another tough battle ensued

in the quarter-finals against 2010 worldc h amp i o n s h i p s em i - f i n a l i s t , C r a i gWaddingham-Davies prevailing 7-5.

Fellow Welsh international Tom Cousinsblocked Davies’ path to the final. Once againthe match almost ran its full course with theeventual champion on the right side of an 8-6score line. Then came the final and ultimatelyvictory. “I was actually hoping to blitz theframes,” he explained.

“Swansea’s Championship play-off finalagainst Reading was on the television and Iwanted to watch.”

Davies missed the Swans’ early goals but it wasa day of double celebration as they went on tocomplete a 3-1 victory. Davies also hopes tomix it with pool’s Premier Leaguers after hisTour triumph. “Hopefully, I can go on and wina few more titles.

“The win will improve my ranking and pushme towards the top 10 which is where I wantto be.”

Asked if he knew of Potts’ outstanding Tourfinal record, Davies smiled, ”It’s about time helost one then, isn’t it.”

PARKIN’S PROGRESSPHIL’S FIRST CLUB SUCCESS

WELCOME TO THE TOUR 2

Phil Parkin admits his success in Club Threecame totally “out of the blue.”

But the 20-year-old former England Juniorinternational skipper hopes it will be the firstof many wins.

Parkin had never progressed beyond the last16 of any previous Club Opens he’d contested.

However, having made the breakthrough bybeating Amos Wright 5-3 to reach the quarter-finals, he continued to improve.

Dundee’s Marc Fleming, a semi-finalist in ClubOne, was knocked out 5-3 in the last eight anda 5-2 success over Jack Pople took Parkin intothe final.

Opposing him was one of the game’s bestjuniors, Frank Costello. Indeed, the 17-year-oldLondoner would leave Daventry and travel toBlackpool to successfully defend his WEPFWorld Junior crown.

However, Parkin, whose successes includeworld junior team wins, scored a famous 6-5victory though he reckoned the result wasnever in doubt.

“I was 4-1 up but Frankie won the next fourframes to go 5-4 up,” explained Kenilworthbased Parkin.

“I wasn’t too worried though and managed totake the next two.

“I know Frankie is a great player but I don’tthink I have ever lost to him. It’s a good recordto have.

“However, I was surpr ised to win the

tournament. I’d never previously done well inthe Clubs.

“But something clicked this time and I justmanaged to stay focused and concentrated allthe way through.”

Parkin, who first started playing pool at the ageof six, is back on Tour this year after a seasonlong break.

“I couldn’t afford it last year,” he admitted.“But hopefully this time I can get some goodresults and make it worthwhile.”

JJ Faul, a winner of Club Two, fell victim toDominic Ashworth in the last 64 to prove howtough to win these events can be.

FIRST COUSINS - TOM TOPPLES HARRISON TO WIN GRAND PRIX

PROFESSIONAL EVENTS

44

Tom Cous ins c la imed his second IPAProfessional title with victory at the VauxhallGrand Prix. And no one could deny Cousins hissuccess following on from last year's victoryover Adam Davis in the Professional Cup.

He defeated 2009 world champion PhilHarrison 9-7 in the final, newly crowned worldchampion Davis in the last eight and three-timeBlackpool winner Gareth Potts in the last 16.

Potts was brushed aside 8-5 in the last 16while Cousins also accounted for former worldchampionships semi-finalist, Gareth Hibbott,8-2.

“I have got more confidence now when I playthe top guys,” said Cousins.

“I know I can beat them and when you knock-out players of their calibre it only gives you aboost.

“I think I was always behind against Phil in thefinal until I managed to get 7-6 up. After thatI just got over the line,” added Cousins whobeat Davis 9-8 in 2010 to lift the ProfessionalCup.

“In practice, I’m probably playing the best Ihave ever played. It’s just taking that intotournaments.

“I’d love to win a Tour. It’s about time becauseI have been trying long enough. “I got to afinal last year so hopefully it’s my turn soon.”

Cousins, beaten by eventual champion BenDavies in the last four of Tour Three, also hasanother pressing match occupying histhoughts - a money game with MarcFarnsworth.

“It’s a minimum £20,000 each,” revealedCousins of the forthcoming clash at the PlayersPool and Snooker Lounge in Newcastle-under-Lyme.

“I think the most I’ve ever played for is £2,000so it’s a bit daunting. “But I am sure I will be

fine,” said the Great Hockham based pro.

Cousins has a shot at another professional titlewhen the Professional Challenge resumes laterthis year.

And it's chance to gain another moral boostingvictory over Potts who is relieved to still be inthe competition. He defeated World Masterschampion Neil Raybone and Ian Hubbard toreach the quarter-finals while Potts had twomarathon contests in his previous two games.

Both his matches against James Croxton andJason Twist went the full distance with Pottscoming out on the right side of an 8-7 scoreline.

Potts is one of three players still involved in theInternational Masters and the ProfessionalChallenge. Also still in contention areFarnsworth and the ever reliable worldchampionship runner-up Harrison.
