The Big Ticketwith Linda Carter and Mike Zimmerman

Mike. When I asked someone whothe best people were for lessons, they directed me to Bill Cress andMichael at the famous 2-11 Club. Iapproached Mike for lessons andfrom then on we clicked.... And Ihave yet to get my lessons!”Mike has fond memories of the 211Club as well and spoke of hisexperiences there saying, “Wellthere were two 211’s. The first timeI started playing there was about1977 or ’78. That was JohnTeerink’s first one. Then in around’93 or ’94, all the poolrooms closedup around here. There were norooms except for John’s. Thenabout a year later the Casino Clubopened up, “Nardo’s” so we all wentthere because it was closer toHarry’s (Platis) house.”When I asked Mike if there was alot of action at the 211 Club hereplied, “When Harry was in theroom. Harry has been the action up

here forever. There was a littleaction besides.” Mike was also aroad player and went on the roadthrough the South and Midwest withDave Piona and later with ColeDixon and recounted a few storiesduring our talk, “I had a gun pulledon me once in Tulsa. The guythought I did business withsomebody but I didn’t so he walkedoff. Back then you could end up inthe swamps in the South. You hadto always look around you to seewho was talking. It wasn’t alwaysthe guy you were playing but theguy who was side betting. And ifthey gathered together and startedtalking you had to pay attention.Cole and I got chased out of a baronce, some guy ripped a beer canin half and was going to cut our hair(we had long hair). I saw him ripthe beer can, (Cole was playingsomeone) and he said somethingto his friend like “I’m gonna cut their (Carter-Zimmerman

hair” and we ran out of that place. We jumped in the car and spun outon the gravel and threw rocks intheir faces. We came around anddid it again, kind of like in themovies.”Pool has been a part of this coupleslife from the beginning. Lindastarted the Association ofCuesports for Women (ACW) in theNorthwest for women to competeon a semi-pro level. This evolvedinto what is now the NWPA, whichholds tour stops throughout theNorthwest and qualifies players forthe WPBA Women’s ProfessionalBilliards Association.Mike and Linda had the distinctionof being chosen to play for the ill-fated IPT. There were only twocouples that received the nod.Obviously they were excited aboutparticipating in what was beingtouted as a very prestigious tourand offered the pool players achance at legitimacy. When askedwhat they thought about the tour,Mike responded, “I thought it wasdream land.” And Linda said, “Thetour promised riches added to eachtournament likenever before. Itwas a crazyjubilant time.Hope was

Side PocketsBecause of the side pocket’s design and location at the middle of eachlong rail, certain scoring and positional moves can be made at the sidepockets that aren’t possible or feasible at the corners. Some are well

known, somearen’t.ScoringandpositionThe 8-ball at thetop isn’t quitestraight in. Theproblem for theplayer whowants to getposition on the9-ball at the

right end rail is that the 8 can’t be cut to the left. The solution is to cut itslightly to the right with topspin. The cue ball will follow a curving pathapproximately as shown. The action is fairly easy to get at close quarters, but difficult if the 8-ball is more than an inch or two from the rail.At the bottom, the 7-ball is touching the cushion. If it is not too far awayfrom the point, it can be driven straight into the pocket with a hard, full-in-the-face hit - the rubber simply bends out of the way.At the lower left corner is the same idea applied to a corner pocket -useful when any cut on the 6-ball would lose position.

Thank you Sarge for your time, effortsand sharing your abilities and most ofall your friendship.

choice.”As everyone knows all too well, the IPT is no longer a viable entity, operating in the players best interest and providing a venue that wasunprecedented in the pool world. Many of the tour’s players have beengreatly disillusioned and the promises of making a good living as a touringpro have all but vanished. Kevin Trudeau is still keeping hope alive bypromising the return of the IPT but the question still remains: Will theplayers return?Linda had some comments on that very issue, “To date, the players arestill divided. Many high-profile players think he was over-reaching in hisgrandiose schemes. Others curse the day they heard of the IPT andKevin Trudeau. A few great players hung up their cues for good, depressed and disillusioned with the state of pool. Legal teams havebeen at the ready to enforce payment, but the fact that Trudeau has nowpaid over half shows good intent. Never mind that he initially promisedfull funding from his pockets....and they are deep. The lawyers havefound his offshore accounts and they are well-funded!”Mike’s take on the situation was a little different, “Just pay me off. I’d goback in a heartbeat because I know next time all the money would be inescrow. The players wouldn’t mess up again. They wouldn’t touch it unlessthe money was in escrow and guaranteed that everybody was going toget paid. Pool players are broke and if they aren’t broke they find a wayto go broke.”You can see Mike and Linda most any night in the Seattle area playingpool and unlike some pool players that have been disillusioned they arestill out there playing pool and promoting the game and waiting for anotherchance to take it to another level - because it’s all about the game.I would like to thank Mike and Linda for taking the time to talk with me.The future of pool does not lie in the unfulfilled promises of any shadypromoter but rather in the outlook of the players themselves and whatthey pass on to the up and coming players in our sport. Each generationpasses along their experiences and passion to the next generation.

Carter-Zimmerman (continued from page 3)

Las Vegas, Nevada- Day 4 ofthe Billiard Factory WorldSummit of Pool was filled withexcitement with three topnotch matches. A sold outcrowd filled the newlyconfigured arena with onefeatured OlhausenChampionship Pro table. Firstup was Warren Kiamcomaking his ESPN debutagainst FranciscoBustamente, a veteran ofESPN events. Kiamco foundhimself fortunate with somerolls to take an early 3-1 lead, but as Bustamente provedthis past March at the US ProTour Championship, nodeficit could be too large forhim to overcome.

Bustamente wins 7-4.The Pagulayan/Bustamente semi-finals proved to be exciting andbewildering with Pagulayan taking a commanding 5-2 lead. Both playerswere in good spirits with laughter and joking echoing the entire match. But Bustamente again fought back to 5-4 before missing a 9-Ball to tiethe match and then Pagulayan tried to make the winning 9-ball with hishead turned facing away, that was an easy simple short straight in shot.He missed with a genuine look of shock on his face, but ended up makingthe shot when Bustamente missed the 9-Ball afterwards. The final match was a re-match between The Lion and the South DakotaKid. Van Boening trailed early on to Pagulayan, despite making just minorerrors. Alex stood at 5-2 lead once again with smiles and jokes, but a fewerrors and Shane's awesome break and fire power soon eroded thelaughing and the score stood at 5-5. Shane's break failed him in rack 11when he scrathed in the side off the break and Pagulayan breathed heavilyto run out out and broke and ran out to the 9-Ball in the next game.Making the final 9-Ball with a joyous yell, he soon stopped and screamed,"Oh no...yaaa!!" as the cue ball went two rails towards the side pocketfor a scratch....but the cue ball avoided the side pocket by an inch and arelieved Pagulayan threw his hands up in celebration for sure this timeas the new champion of the World Summit of Pool!

The Plus System for KickingBy: Bob Jewett of the SFBA

San Francisco Billiard Academy

Bob Jewett

In my October and November 2005 articles, Idiscussed the “Corner-5” diamond system whichallows you to calculate the line when kicking atan object ball along a side rail, end rail, side railpath. That system tells you where on the thirdcushion you will hit for any starting line to a sidecushion. (Those articles are available on-line atthe On The Break News web site. Click on“Columnists.”)Now let’s look at a system to use when you haveto hit the end rail first. In the diagram is a typicalproblem. A good safe by your opponent has leftyou locked up. The Plus System may be the key.The system is good for situations where you are

shooting from a side rail and need to hit the end rail first, then the far siderail to return to your starting side rail. It tells you where on the third railyou will hit.You begin by noting how far down the rail from the cue ball’s position youwant to hit. The cue ball’s position is given by where your stick crossesover the diamonds. In the example shot, I’ve made it at an even diamond. The system doesn’t bother to number diamonds along the first rail, sothere is nothing to memorize there. The next thing to note is how much farther down the table you want thecue ball to land on the same cushion. In the diagram, I’ve arranged for itto be exactly three diamonds further down, since the side pocket countsas a diamond. So, you say to yourself “3.” Then you shoot the cue ball tothe spot on the end cushion numbered 3 in the diagram. That’s all thereis to it. If you can subtract small numbers, and memorize the numbers onthe first rail, you can use this system.Well, it’s not quite that simple. Note that the 2 target is not quite where itshould be — up in line with the other spots. That’s because most tableschange angles a little when the ball gets closer to the corner. I haven’tmarked the 4 target as it is right between the 3 and 5. A better name forthis system would be the “3-5 System” since those are the numbers ofthe first two diamonds by the far corner.

The other problemwith the system is thatside spin has a largeeffect on the angles.I think you will findthat running (left inthis case) side spincombined with followwill get the mostconsistent results, butto make the numbers

come out right, youmay have to

vary the spinas the

angle ofthe cue

ball intothe first cushionchanges. There is noone kind of spin thatworks for all shotshere. That meansthat you need topractice the systembefore you use it in agame. If you’ve readthis column before, you knew thatdemand was coming.

Finally, on your equipment and with your stroke, the landing spot on thethird rail may be consistently high or low. That’s fine — just add in a littlecorrection to the calculations for your own conditions. You can find thosecorrections through practice.

I couldn’t figure out a way to send the photos that I took of the Frenchtable and it is so unique that I thought I would try again this month. Afterworking on Dr Puziss is an Orthopedic Specialist who couldn’t stay retiredand has developed several new treatments for worn out and tired jointson guys like me who have worn them out sanding cue tips and carryingslate. When I was doing my radio show Mike Shamos was nice enough to call

and we talked Old Tablesand I described theDoctors table and hethought it might be theoldest surviving table inthe World. It is not only anunusual table but a realpiece of art. I built a pooltable once to match a setof rails that were veryornately inlaid and savedas a picture frame for alarge oil painting fromAustria. The art dealerkept looking at the frameand thought it looked like

a set of billiard rails, sold the painting and brought the rails to me. Sureenough it made a 46 x 92 pool table. I built a Newport style frame and putthe rams head carved leg on and it passed as an Austrian piece offurniture. Unfortunately for us the French found out they were losingtheir heritage and not as many works are being sent to us.Out of all the satisfied customers I have had the privilege of working for,I finally have two unhappy ones. The Club Tavern in Okanogan becauseit has taken me so long to get their replacement rails for an American

Shuffle Board pool table and two Global tables. I finally got them doneand they are on their way, and Brendan Crooks in Santa Rosa Calif.Brendan wanted a perfect Gold Crown II and I worked hard to make hisone. The castings had scratches that I tried to buff out; however, much tomy surprise they were not like the old Aluminum castings but pot metalwith a thin chrome coat. Try as I might I could not get them right. Theyneeded a newchrome treatment.A word to you outthere who might tryto buff out the latermodels of the GCIIcastings, Don’t. Itried every type ofauto chrome paintand lacquer overcoat and struggledto the last minuteas I had my helperscover and pack therails. You know theold story “ if you want something done right, do it your self”. Well, Iinstructed Aaron to wrap the rails back to back and wrap them with Bubblepack. He put the bottom side to the face and of course the staplesscratched the mica that I had spent hours shellac sticking and polishing. They did a poor job of covering one of the rails so I guess that on my wayto southern California where I am heading in July I will stop off and redo.If any one wants me to stop we will be heading almost to San Diego andover to the Phoenix area.Give me a call @503 313 8646 we will try to see you. Also the owner ofthat beautiful Medalist table in Palm Springs that wanted me to stop whenI was anywhere near, I lost your info but if you chance to read this issue, give me a call. Until August, Keep you head still and follow through.

Shotze’s of Everett just finished it’smost memorable tournament todate. I believe we need to renamethis tournament to “THE MONSTERMASH”. For the first time in its 12year history, this tournament filledwith (64) players, (9) of themwomen, and wow, what a field.Players from Oregon, EWashington, Idaho, surroundingareas, and also Canada, Mexico, and Japan, made up this yearstournament. Our tournaments in thepast have drawn the named playersbut this one was defiantly full of themall. This is, to date, the toughest fieldI have ever seen for any tournamentin a very long time.Shotze’s opened its doors at 9am on Saturday morning and immediatelythe players started pouring in. After checking in with Ford and myself, those paying the tournament fee as needed, the tables became primeterritory to get it as much practice as possible before the players meetingand board being drawn.Eddie Mataya, Tacoma, is a player I have been seeing in differenttournaments over the last couple of years. He has always had a goodgame but it has improved along with his confidence. It sure showed overthis weekend. His first match was with Richard Geiler (7-4), and thenmoved on to Lonnie Payne (7-1), Scott Thurston (7-3), Mike Dooley (8-4), Jim Conway (8-1) and then the loss to Paul Potier (2-8) in that allimportant point match. But his weekend wasn’t over yet.Paul Potier, from Canada, pretty much flew thru the board with whatseemed not much difficulty. His matches were Jimmy Olson (7-0), NickLopez (7-1), Randy Camantigue (7-4), Mike Zimmerman (8-6), RafaelMartinez (8-6), and then the point match against Eddie Mataya (8-2).Eddie came back from a (3-5) deficit to defeat Rafael Martinez (6-5) andput himself back into the finals against Paul. That’s really hard to do onits own against a player of Rafael’s caliber but when there are 30-40people watching, its makes it just that much more difficult. I think it wasa perfect way for him to come into the rematch against Paul with a mindset of knowing that he is more than capable of beating these players andthat gives him a foot up right from the beginning. As in our past tournaments, the finals is one race for all the marbles.

This one was no different. One raceto (9) seems like such a short racewhen both players are more thancapable of running out at any giventime. Again with a deficit, this timeof (3-6) and looking like there wasno way Eddie was going to pull thismatch out, he seemed to go into adifferent mode and calmed himselfdown. Then ever time Paul made amistake, Eddie was right there tocapitalize and make everything workto his advantage. The final score was Eddie (9) andPaul (7). Fabulous tournamentEddie! On the second side of thetournament, there were (9) women

competing to be named Hi-woman. This was defiantly no easy task inamong the caliber of men that this tournament had within it. But oneyoung lady stood up to be counted, from Japan, and her name is Kyoko. She came very close to doing what only one other woman, Hsin, hasdone in any of our past Open tournaments and that was to get into theactual money brackets. Kyoko was only one match away when hertournament finished. Kyoko’s matches were Dick Trichler (7-2), ScottThurston (4-7), Sam Hoff (6-1), Lonnie Payne (6-1) and then the last oneagainst Randy Camantigue (1-6). Fabulous tournament Kyoko!!!All the finishers for the tournament, are as follows:1st $1,090 Eddie Mataya2nd $700 Paul Potier3rd $500 Rafael Martinez4th $375 Richard Geiler5-6 $275 Dan Louie & Jim Conway7-8 $200 John (JD) Doherty & Todd Marsh9-12 $150 Mike Dooley, Mike Zimmerman, Randy Camantigue & Naoki13-16 $125 al Alvardo, Jeff Jimenez, Tim Paget & Mike SentzH-W $125 KyokoEveryone who participated, Ford and myself want to thank Darryl, Davidand the rest of the staff for having this great tournament.Mark your calendar on the September 15th and 16th for our WashingtonState 8-Ball Championship Tournament. Information will be in the AugustPaper. Contact Ford or Shotze’s ASAP to get your name in early.Have a safe rest of summer. Rose and Ford (Tournament Directors)

June 9 - 10The AWBT’s 5th stop was held up in the cool pines of Prescott Valley atone of our favorite rooms, On the Snap! This was a WPBA Qualifier, presented by J. Pechauer Custom Cues. The Qualifier Spot was for theWPBA Florida Classic to be held Hollywood, Florida June 27th throughJuly 1st.25 ladies made the trip up on Saturday. The field consisted of womenfrom all over the State of Arizona as well as several ladies from California,Nevada, Mexico and even Wisconsin! The top 8 ladies came back to play on Sunday, all bright eyed and bushytailed. On the A side was Susan Mello vs. LeAndrea Gaff and SusanWilliams vs. Holly Sholes. On the B side was Kristin Haney vs. MichelleTrevino and Hydred Makabali vs. Jeri Engh.Susan Mello and Holly Sholes both won their first matches of the dayand met up for the hot seat match. As expected, it was a very tightmatch. Holly made it to the hill first with the score 6-5 then quickly wonthe next game which won her the match and the hot-seat.Mello went on to play Kristin Haney for 3rd place. At this point, sinceHolly had already won her spot into to the WPBA Florida Classic at thelast AWBT WPBA Qualifier, and since Kristin did not pay to play for thequalifier spot, that meant Susan Mello had already won the Qualifierspot in this tournament! So any wins from that point on would just be forfun and bonus money! We knew this match would also be a tight matchand we weren’t disappointed! After game 10 it was tied at 5. Kristin puttogether some great runs, won the last two games and won that match 7- 5.After a really long day with many long matches, Holly finally had anopponent. Kristin and Holly hugged and began their match. Since thiswas a true double elimination format, Kristin would have to beat Holly in2 sets of a race to seven. The match started off rough for both girls. Thefirst set was Kristin all the way. She easily won the match 7-2.The ladies took a break and started the 2nd set. Kristin won the lag andsnapped the 9 on the very first break! The very next game, Holly broke, the 9 almost went but hung in the pocket with an easy 1-9 combo, whichshe made! Just like that tied 1-1. Then, Kristin snapped the ball again towin game 5 and Holly turned right around and snapped the nine to wingame 6! At that point the match was 4-2, with Kristin in the lead. Hollyran the rack in game 7 which made the score 4-3, then a 3 ball run outtied up the match 4-4. Then game 9, Kristin broke, almost made the 9-ball again, but left it hanging, then made an awesome 1-9-cross-table-carom to make the 9 which earned her the lead back 5-4. Holly cameright back and made a great run and won the next game, which tied itback up 5-5. Game 11 was a game of great safes and great hits. FinallyHolly got an edge and made a difficult cut shot and ran the rest of the 3balls to win the game and put her on the hill. Kristin came right back andwon the next game which made the game hill-hill! Kristin broke andscratched. The game went back and forth until they were down to the 7ball. Holly plaid an awesome safety which made Kristin have to kick atthe 7. Kristin kicked and hit the 7 ball but didn’t make it. Then Hollymade the 7 and 8 but missed the 9. The crowd gasped. Kristin calmlywalked up and made the 9 to win the game, the set and the Match!Congrats to Holly Sholes for 2nd place and $195 in prize money, Congratsto Kristin Haney for winning this tournament and the $295 in prize moneyin prize money! Congrats to Susan Mello for her WPBA Qualifier win tothe Florida Classic during this tournament! All of Arizona will be routingfor you and Holly in Florida! As a side note....Man these women can play! I know I’ve said it before, but these women make it look so easy! If you’ve never had a chance tocome out watch one of the AWBT WPBA Qualifiers, as mostly a spectator,I can tell you, you really should come! These women are fantastic and I

The Northwest Junior Qualifier was a small tournament but was BIG ongreat pool shooting!19UB (19 and under boys)Our local players were honored to see the performance level that Chuckie

Holyoke brought to us! What ashining star Chuckie is. For thoseof you that have not yet seen orheard of this young man, keep youreyes and ears open because he ISthe next big name in Billiards, andI’m not just talking Juniors! Chuckieis a quite player. But it is loud andclear that he has paid his dues andhas put in his practice time. Most15 year olds would be happy withjust making a shot, not Chuckie. Each shot was made with thoughtand precision and nearly flawlessthroughout the tournament. Everyonce in a while I could see Chuckieshake his head for a missed leave(only by inches) but he would quickly

regroup to finish the run.Chuckie easily walked through thefield to take first place. But becausehe already earned a spot forNationals the previous weekend, thequalifying spot went to second placefinisher, Levi Meyer. Here’s how the event unfolded:Chuckie (Mt Vernon, WA) had winsagainst Zak Biggs (Spokane, WA)9-3, Nat Biggs (Spokane, WA) 9-1,and Levi Meyer (Boise, ID) 9-3.Levi’s march to the finals includedwins against Josh Moore (Boise, ID)9-7, and Brian Phillips (Boise, ID)9-7. Levi went to the B side with alose to Holyoke 9-3. On the B side Levi defeated Zak Biggs 9-3, to getback to a rematch with Chuckie. The final match between Holyoke andMeyer ended with a strong finish of 9-1 for Holyoke. Well Done! ChuckieHolyoke is sponsored by Dr. Cue Billiards.14UBThe finals for the 14 and under boys event put brother against brother. And what a match it was. Logan Parker, 13 and Alec Parker, 11 took thebrother match to the limit. It started out with one game to younger brotherAlec. Logan quickly tied it up at 1-1. Well, it went on like that only asbrothers can do. At 7-7, after it being tied several times up to this point,Logan won to make it 8-7 in a race to 9. The next game went back andforth just as the match had gone. Just when we all thought it was over,Logan missed the nine and scratched. Alec had a ball-in-hand on the

Northwest Jr Qualifiersnine to tie it up one last time. The lack of experience and nerves of along, long match proved to be too much for Alec and he missed the nine. After each Parker brother shot at the nine a couple more times, Loganwas able to play a nice rail shot to end this intense match once and for

all. The final scorewas 9-7 older brotherover younger brother.Tracie Parker, Loaganand Alec’s momdeserves a medal, ora trip to a day spa, forbeing able to sitthrough such anintense match!Although, Logan wonthe match, they are

both winners in mybook. The Parker’sare true gentlemenand treated eachother with the greatestamount of respect.GirlsThere were only twogirls present for thequalifier, Anna Thorne15 (Boise, ID) andMercedes Pendleton9 (Boise,ID). They played a set between them to get in some tournamentpractice. Even though Mercedes is only 9, she shot real well. Shemanaged a win against Anna 5-4. Mercedes is excited to be going toNationals again. She attended Nationals in Tuscan, AZ last year where

she was the youngest player of theentire Juniors event.Thank you to Pool and Game TableStore (Boise,ID), Poolhead.com,Jim Jenkins, Greg Hampton, andBoise State University for all yoursupport. Thanks to those of you thatcame from out of town to participatein the qualifier. I hope to see you allagain next year. Thank you to all theparents for coming and supportingthese young players. I have afeeling we haven’t seen the last ofthem yet! Maybe they will be the nextMax Eberle or Lori Jon Jones! Onecan only hope. Good luck to all theJunior players at Nationals. By Stephen Spivack, Tournament ManagerCity Lights proudly hosted the firststop of the Rainier 9-Ball Tour, June16th and 17th, the field was full ofchampions, including RafaelMartinez, Dan Louie, Todd Marsh,Hsin Huang, Kyoto Sone and manymore, 30 players in all showed upto compete for a $1700 total purse. The races were set to 7/7, BCA, cueball foul only rules.Early on this tournament belongedto Rafael Martinez, taking outCanada’s own Alan Ima in trulystunning form (7-0), in just under 9minutes. Mike Zimmermanknocked off women’s championHsin Huang (7-1), Jeff “Hill-Hill”Jimenez showed us why he earnsthat nickname, knocking off thetour’s director, Junior Tolentino (7-6), then Junior Sardoncillo (7-6), buttruly all eyes were on the top of thebracket as Rafael continued todominate and destroy everychallenger he faced, his race to thepoint, brought every greatchallenger to their threshold, he

took on Eddie Mataya, and won (7-1), he then played Japan’s NaokiWakimoto and he too was sentpacking (7-1), his race to the pointwas everyone’s envy, Arlo

Walsman, had chances but, misseda tough cut 9 ball to lose, (7-2),playing for the point in a winningrecord total of (28-4), Rafael cutdown the ever so surging ToddMarsh (7-1).The one-loss side was filled with theonslaught of destruction fromRafael’s path, Dan Louie, whoseshort-ended loss to MikeZimmerman, put him on the 17th -24th spots, only Z-Man’s trip on thewinner side was short-lived, gettingdefeated by the kid, Arlo Walsman,(7-5), on an incredible, no thoughtgotta make behind the back jumpshot, Zimmeman’s dreams weredashed just like that. Alan Ima, whoearly on suffered a loss on thewinner’s side to Rafael, proved

what a strong player he really is,coming back from the bottom of thebracket, to win seven straightmatches to wait in the third spotwhile Martinez, sent Todd Marsh

packing to the 3rdplace match withAlan who had winsover Gary Garvin (7-1), Michael Jensenof Beaverton, OR (7-3), Pat Vice, (7-6),Tim Paget (7-2),Mike Shannon (7-3),Arlo Walsman (7-3),and Raul Abenojar,(7-4). The other side of theone loss bracket was

run by local favorite Raul Abenojar, early on he suffered a hill-hill lossto Junior Sardoncillo, only to comeback in full force winning his nextsix matches, putting Junior Toletinoto rest (7-1), Joe Chun back tosome one-hole (7-3), Eddie Matayaback to the drawing board (7-4),Mike Zimmerman back home earlyto Linda (7-5), including a rare 9 ballsnap, and Jeff Jimenez (7-4), onlyto face-off with the also surging AlanIma and in a strongly controlledmatch, Raul was back home with4th place, while Alan moved handilyon to face Todd Marsh. This match-up was one for theages, each player trading rack afterrack, but in the end it was just ascratch on the 8 that broke Alan’s

back and left Todd, the ball in handthat he needed to win.The finals set at one race to 11 wasall Todd Marsh needed to strikeover Rafael, early on taking acommanding 8-2 lead, only after ascratch Rafael eventuallyhammered the match out to 8-8, butin true Marsh-mallow fashion, Todd, with his hammer breaks andmastery of play, pulled away tocapture the Rainier 9-Ball 1st StopTour Victory (11-8).30 players X $40 Entry = $1200,plus Tour Add $250, City Lights add$250$1700 total purse1st Todd Marsh $6002nd Rafael Martinez $3303rd Alan Ima $2004th Raul Abenojar $1605th Jeff Jimenez $100

Samm Diep (c) May 2007After having taken a personal hiatus from my pool

training these past few months, I’m back to basicsthis week. I’ve just been shooting a ton of stopshots and just making lots of balls. The Monkcalls it “piling rocks.” That’s when you throw allfifteen balls on the table and run them and runthem and run them. I love to pile rocks. It’s really

quite demanding of your attention andfocus actually. It’s so easy to get lazy andlackadaisical if you don’t have a plan.Other variations of piling rocks includeshooting every ball with your oppositehand, using the bridge on every shot, drawing every ball, following every ball, shooting every shot as firm as you can,

shooting every shot as easy as you can, or trying not to bump into anotherball. These are all just some variations to spice up your practice a little. On this particular hot summer night at Table Steaks East, I was pilingrocks, shooting each shot with a firm punch stroke. Then I decided toselect only the more difficult shots, versus just shooting the connect-the-dots layout in front of me. In doing so, I began noticing a pattern. I caughtmyself second guessing my decisions. I noticed that I wasn’t fullycommitted a couple times to shooting this not so obvious shot. That’swhen it came to me. I’m sure I’m not the first to think of it, but I’m callingit The Plan B Exercise.Obviously, Plan B is what we resort to when our Plan A fails. In thisexercise, throw all fifteen balls on the table to run in no particular order.Start with a not so obvious, more difficult shot and play shape for a specificball and pocket on the table. Once you get there, turn around and nowshoot a completely different, much more difficult shot. Repeat. Theobjective is to become accustomed to committing to and pocketing anyshot, not just the one you planned for. You’d be amazed at how thisforces you to just suck it up and shoot.Have you ever gotten out of line and now you’re faced with a more difficultshot than intended, or maybe even have to choose a different shotaltogether? It’s so common to then miss because we were so consumedwith the disappointment that we were distracted from our task at hand, which is making the shot. My Plan B Exercise is just a simple little way ofpracticing overcoming the change of plan and resetting yourself for thenew plan and shot you’re facing.I’m sure I’m not the first to think of it. Give it a try and I welcome yourthoughts on it. As always, thanks for all your continued support.Samm Diep, “Cherry Bomb” - House Pro at Table Steaks East in Aurora, ColoradoAuthor of “You Might Be A D Player If... LAKE SAINT LOUIS, MO (June 18,2007) - Sports Illustrated hashighlighted the positive impact theAmerican Poolplayers Association(APA) has made on the sport of poolin a recent article by Jon Wertheim.Wertheim addresses pool’s “seedyreputation,” but also notes thesuccess of the sport at therecreational level - due in large partto the APA.Here’s a small excerpt from thatarticle:“Much of the credit for this growthis owed to the AmericanPoolplayers Association (APA), aMissouri-based outfit that claims aquarter of a million players asmembers and sanctions weeklyamateur leagues in 9,000 differentsites. If the group’s official missionis to organize and standardizerecreational pool — serving as agoverning body for amateur pool —the unofficial mission is to serve asa public relations vehicle for thesport. For one, there’s a strictprohibition in gambling. (“That’s notthe view we want others to have ofus,” says APA President ReneePoehlman.) Women are welcomeand comprise nearly one-third ofAPA membership. And thanks to anin-house handicapping system, TheEqualizer, ball-bangers (beginners)can play alongside the most skilledpractitioners. “We don’t want to beconsidered the pool of yesteryear,”says Poehlman.”

To read Wertheim’s entire article, click the link below:http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/jon_wertheim/06/15/pool.image/1.htmlThe APA, based in Lake SaintLouis, Mo., sanctions the world’slargest amateur pool league, knownas the APA Pool League throughoutthe United States and as theCanadian Pool League in Canada.More than 260,000 memberscompete in weekly 8-Ball and 9-Ballleague play. The APA is generallyrecognized as the Governing Bodyof Amateur Pool, havingestablished the official rules, championships, formats andhandicap systems for the sport ofamateur billiards. The APA is proudly sponsored byCuetec Cues, Valley Tables, ValleyUltra Teflon Cloth and AramithBilliard Balls. For more information about theAPA, visit the official APA Web siteat www.poolplayers.com.

LOOKING BACK AND FORWARD!By Kit DennisYes it’s that time of year again. Time to turn our attentions to the 2007/2008 league season. After just having returned from Las Vegas andshortly before that the PACS regionals at Little Creek, I can honestly sayI’m excited to begin the new ACS year. The organization as trulydeveloped itself into the premier association and has been named as thegoverning body for all cuesports (pool, carom and snooker) into the USOlympic Committee. This was evident this year in Vegas as they hadthe American/Canadian Snooker Challenge going on in one of the sideareas. They held clinics for the pool players at no cost. Boy, if you thinka pool table is big, try playing on a snooker table!!! It gives you a wholenew appreciation for that game. Also, during the tournament, they hadthe ESPN Televised World Summit of Pool as well as “challenge thepros”, where during the Beer and Chips mixer the Billiard EducationFoundation sponsored an event to “challenge” the pros. One of theladies beat Corey Duell and the crowd went wild. The actual event itselfcouldn’t have been better. The competition was great and as usual,High Country Promotion did a fantastic job of running the tournament. Many of our local Northwest players did great, in fact taking top honors -but I won’t go into that here. I’m sure the results will be publishedelsewhere in this paper. One change this year was a new scotch formatwhere you played both races in 8 and 9 ball. It was a new twist andquite fun! In addition to the main events, second chance tournamentwhere offered with no entry free and added money in all 8-ball events.Mini tournaments were also running non stop. If you’ve never been to anACS national tournament, I’d encourage you to mark your calendar fornext year.Well, enough about the nationals. I’d like to turn your attention to thelocal action and the Pacific ACS. We have secured the Little CreekResort and Casino in Shelton, Washington again this year for thetournament. Of all the people I talked to after this year’s event I honestlycan’t say I heard a single negative thing. The facility was excellent andthey really appreciated all the pool players. The tournament was runflawlessly, again with the assistance of Gary Benson of High CountryPromotions (a recurring theme here?). I’m really excited to be part ofthis organization as we enter our 4th year. Speaking of the upcomingyear, leagues are beginning to form. We’ve got leagues underway fromEugene up to the North Seattle area. We expect the northern area to

Jessica hauledin the hardware in no fewer than six(!) divisions of play - Women's 9-Ball Singles [2nd], Women'sMasters 8-Ball Singles [1st], MasterScotch Doubles [1st], Women'sOpen 9-Ball Team [2nd], Women'sMaster 8-Ball Team [2nd] andWomen's Speed Pool [1st].Bar whiz Jesse Bowman (E. Moline,IL) rebounded from lackluster 2006singles results to claim the Men's 9-Ball Singles title, but again placed outof the money in the Men's Masters 8-Ball Singles - won by newcomerShannon Ducharme of Winnipeg,Canada. Katrina Dennis (Ridgefield,WA) scored the Women's 9-BallSingles crown, and claimed a strong3rd place in the Women's Open 8-BallSingles as well. Injuring her leg intransit to Las Vegas, JeanBartholomew (Portland, OR) continuedto add on to her impressive resume inthe Senior Women's 8-Ball Singles byclaiming yet another national title.Blake Byrket (Muscatine, IA) tookdown the Men's Standard 8-BallSingles title, while his seventeen yearold daughter, Rachel, took 4th in theWomen's Open 8-Ball Singles and 1ston the winning Leisure Time Bratzteam in the Women's Master 8-BallTeams. The FCB Willis team fromOmaha, Nebraska claimed both theMen's Open 9-Ball and Men's Open 8-Ball team titles, while Canadian teams

In the 2nd Annual"Can-Am Snooker Challenge," TeamUSA avenged its 2006 defeat by TeamCanada on the beautiful 12-foot greenbaize to claim the challenge trophy bya 12-8 margin over Team Canada.Canada regained some sense ofsatisfaction when its 2-man team ofAlain Robidoux and Don Chomiskitook down the $500 winner-take-all"UPA vs. Canada" snooker challengeover pro 9-ball and former pro snookerplayers Tony Crosby (UK) and LeeChenman (Hong Kong). by Michelle Barkdoll, League Operator APA Pierce County, WATwo from thirty 9-Ball teams qualified June 1 thru June 3, through theirtop performance at the Local Team Championship (LTC), to compete at

the 2007 APA 9-Ball NationalT e a mChampionship(NTC) in LasVegas. Tacoma’sCity Lights Spirits& Pool in Tacoma,WA was the hostto this event. These teams willbe vying for anational title andfirst place prizemoney of

$15,000. The tournament takes place at the Riviera Hotel & Casino August17-20.A team has two ways to earn eligibility into the annual LTC tournament.1. End a regular session as ‘high point finisher’ within their division.2. Win a division play-off therefore becoming a ‘division champion’.Since the LTC format is modified single elimination, all teams areguaranteed to play twice. With this tournament format, when teams getto the third round, it turns into single elimination.Vi Suga Arse (contrary to their sarcastic team name) has been acompetitive team for many years. The team just qualified at the end ofthe spring session for LTC’s by finishing third highest in points in theirdivision, placing them in the session play-offs. The team continued throughplay-offs defeating HHH Crew in the semifinals and The Thizzzle in thefinals match to earnthem the ‘divisionchampion’ title anda seat into the 2007LTC’s.This is the first yearthe team will becompeting at theNTC. Since themajority of the teamworks at the RightSpot in Fife, theyalways have to dopeople shuffling tohave enough players to play in the LTC tournament and still haveemployees to work! :) Having little sleep from closing the bar on Fridaynight, the team played their first round at 8 am on Saturday morning. After winning that match, they were scheduled to play their next match at

11. The team was defeated by the 9 Ball Runners, Steve Franco (capt.)from the Log Cabin Pub & Eatery in Sumner; therefore putting Angie’steam on the B side of the tournament board. Vi Suga Arse continued todefeat their opponents for the next 3 match’s earning them a seat in thefinals match. The finals match was to be against The Other Team, GaryLamb (capt.) from Denny’s in Lakewood, WA, a team where the majorityof the players won the LTC for 8 Ball in 2005. Also, one of their teammates, Kenneth Hendrickson, just got back from the APA National SinglesChampionship in Las Vegas. The match went down to the 5th gamewhere LenEkenman (ownerof the Right Spot)had to play SteveClardy (both skilllevel 6). The scorefor the two teamsentering in the 5thmatch was 46 to34, in favor of TheRight Spot team. This meant Lenhad to only get to23 points before his opponent needed to reach the skill level points of46. After an exciting match between both players, Len led the team tovictory with a final game score of 23 to 37.If the Right Spot has a ‘gone fishing’ sign on its front door from August 17to the 20th ... you’ll know why!

The captain of AllRacked Up, SecretWong, is no strangerto the 9 Ball NTC; shecompeted with a teamin 2005. Her currentteam qualified thisyear for LTC’s duringthe summer sessionby winning divisionplay-offs. In the fallsession, the teammade it to the finals

match and this spring session made it to the semifinals. The majority ofthe team is used to playing together since 4 of the 7 members also playedas a team in the 8-ball format. All Racked Up was defeated in their first match against the Too FunCrew team; therefore, putting the team on the B-side of the board. Theteam won their next 3 match’s earning them a seat in the final match.Their opponents, Bastanados, Christal Haesel (Capt.) from the UnicornSports Bar & Grill in Ruston, WA has had a phenomenal league year. The Bastanados finished high point’s finisher 2 of the 3 session, won thefinals match for the summer and fall sessions and finished in 2nd placefor the final’s match of the spring session. Christal’s team also won theirfirst four matches’ of the LTC tournament to seat them in the final’s match. That made for some tough competition for the All Racked up team! The match ended up going to the 5th game with the score being 41-39,in favor of Secret’s team. The winner was going to be determined by

experience quite a bit of growth as Little Creek is, in essence, in theirbackyard. If you’ve wanted to play ACS but haven’t been able to find aleague, that is quickly changing. To qualify to play in all ACS eventsyou must play 8 weeks in a sanctioned league between June 1st andMay 31st of the upcoming year. You can play in as many leagues andleague sessions as you’d like. Your membership dues ($20.00) coveryou for the entire year. The PACS is more than happy to sanction anyleague, or dual sanction leagues with whichever organization you arecurrently playing under. I know this has been an issue for some of you inthe past and frankly, I don’t understand why some of the other leaguesare dead set against this. We are happy to work with you to make thishappen. We want all pool players to be able to play as much pool asthey can and participate in as many events as their schedules allowOne of the things that we as an organization feel we could do a better jobat is communicating with you, our members and future members.Unfortunately, or fortunately as the case may be, your Pacific ACS boardis made up of pool players, not journalists. This year I will personallycommit to you to communicate on a regular basis and keep you informedof how you can participate in our leagues and events. I will be asking allour league operators to keep me abreast of their leagues so I can sharethis information with you. It breaks my heart to think there are some ofyou out there that want to be a part of the organization but have beenunable to do so in the past because of a lack of knowing how to getinvolved. So, stay tuned each month for more information and contactinformation for leagues in your area and be part of the association run bypool players for pool players. For a current list of league operators, please visit our web site at pacificacs.org and click on the “leagues” tab.

Summer JamboreeSummer JamboreeSummer JamboreeSummer JamboreeSummer JamboreeHard Times Billiards, Sacramento CABy Tom Suarez, tournament directorThe Big story for the Jamboree 9Ball and One Pocket events was theaddition of the World famous playersattending. Francisco Bustamante,Rafael Martinez, Marlon Manalo,Bobby Hunter, John Schmidt, IkeRunnels, Chris MacDonald andTony Chohan all traveled from theirhome towns/countries to play in theJamboree.Francisco Bustamante didn't justwalk away with all the prizes, but itsure looked that way. The 9 Ballevent had 72 players with races to9 on the winners side and 7 on theone loss side. Bustamante drew a1st round bye and played JohnSchmid (who also drew a first roundbye) and won a close match 9-7.John then took the long way to thefinals winning 10 matches on the leftside to gain the rematch with Bustyin the single race to 11 in the finals. It was not an easy win for Francisco,John was on a mission and wasleading 8-7 in this race but came updry on the break in the 16th rack, and Busty caught a gear and wonthe next 4 to send John home with2nd place money.1st $3000 Francisco Bustamante2nd $2200 John Schmidt3rd $1500 Tyler Edey4th $1000 Marlon Manalo5/6 $500 Geraldo Jimto and Edwin Montal7/8 $350 Louis Ulrich and Jose Parica9-12 $250 Bobby Hunter, Austin Murphy, Tony Chohan, Jeff Gregory

The One Pocket event had 53 players in the double elimination event. Arace to 3 on both the winners and one loss side made for interestingmatchups by all entrants.Once again the random draw matched two great players up in the firstround. Rafael Martinez and Francisco Bustamante played great againsteach other and it was unfortunate that this match up was so early.

Francisco won 3-1.This turned out to be just the firstmatch of Francisco's undefeated runto the finals. In the Hot Seat match,Tony Chohan took the early lead andthen was on the hill whenBustamante found what he neededto make the run for the finals. Bustywon the next two games and sentTony to the left side. This match tookall of 35 minutes. The first 4 gameswere over in 20 minutes.Tony met Colorado's David Grossin the finals of the left side. Davidput up a struggle but Chohan wason a mission and wanted to get backto the finals in the longer race to 5against Busty. Tony won 3-0 againstMr. Gross to gain his chance again. The finals started out all Tonywinning the first game. Busty cameback to squeak out the secondgame but Tony bounced back andwon the next 2 to make the score 3-1. But, then Busty slowed down andstarted taking the better percentageshots and playing more safetiesthan in the first few games. This newstrategy turned the table around andBusty won the next 3 games tomake the score 4-3. With Tony

breaking on the next game and Busty missing a cross bank, Tony got theeasy win to tie the score 4-4 and set the stage for the single game final.Busty broke, Tony turned the table layout around and had most of theballs now in front of his pocket. Francisco took a lot more time in thisgame than the previous games and it paid off. Bustamante kept playingsafe and taking ball out of the front of Tony's pocket and sending themup table and keeping Tony scrambling. The final ball count for the lastgame was 8-5.1st $3000 Francisco Bustamante2nd $1500 Tony Chohan3rd $1000 David Gross4th $600 Jose Parica5/6 $400 Louis Ulrich and Ike Runnels7/8 $300 Joey Gebron and Chris MacDonald9-12 $200 Bobby Hunter, Tyler Edey, Mark Haddad, Russ Webster
