That gave Cindy two championships in theonly two events she entered.Players not only had fun the week at the beach, butalso showed their concern for a fellow player. DaveSchelske who has played in WBCA events for yearswith CascadePool league andN o r t h w e s tPlayers League, has developed

Sherman, Sassy Campbell (back after a few year’s layoff) and CindyRosenthal, kept everyone one informed. Andrew Monstis, MembershipCommittee, gave away over $2,000 worth of prizes. Darryl Farley broughtin a crew of refs with national credentials who did an outstanding job. Notenough can be said about the job our Secretary/Treasure Joyce Gummdid in gathering and verifying the entries, getting out the checks in recordtime and answering all the little questions that needed answers. As always,Gary Benson and High Country Promotions did a great job of runningthe tournament and providing the tables. On The Break produced thefull-color tournament program this year. A huge thanks to goes to BCAPLMark Griffin’s national team for their support given here and nationally.Others volunteered many hours so that this tournament would runefficiently and people would enjoy the event. Again, thanks to all.As this tournament ended, it was very gratifying to hear the many positivecomments made by players and spectators. “I have attended many ofthe Western BCA’s regional tournaments, and this is the best 8-ball everheld,” one player said. Countless others echoed these sentiments. The caliber of pool continues to grow at the Western BCA tournamentsand when you add players of the caliber of National Grandmasters DanLouie and Mike Zimmerman the future looks bright. Next up is the Annual9-Ball Championship on October 23-28. About three years ago, I covered some vocabularyassociated with cue sticks. This time I’ll go oversome terms associated with play. Even if you area long-time player, check out the meanings asthere you may find some surprises.Swerve — When you hit the cue ball with sidespin, it doesn’t go in a straight path down the table.Instead it will curve some to the side of the spin. This curving is called swerve. It is like a mildform of masse. On regular shots, it is bothersomeand can cause you to miss, but if you need to getaround a ball, slightly, it can be very useful.Increase it by elevating, using more side spin, and using draw. Shoot softer if you want the

swerve to happen in a short distance.Throw — When the cue ball lands on the object ball, you would like theobject ball to go straight away from the cue ball. Many aiming systemsare based on this fundamental idea. Unfortunately, if the cue ball hasspin it can rub on the object ball and pull it off to the side a little. Thiseffect is called throw. This can also happen if the cue ball has no spinbut is cutting the object ball at an angle. In this case, the cue ball dragsthe object ball in the direction of its movement, a little. This latter kind ofthrow is also seen in frozen combinations that appear to be lined upstraight to the pocket, but if the first ball is hit across the second, the

second will be dragged some to the side.Skid — This is what happens when there is extreme throw betweenballs. It seems to be caused by chalk or some other substance at thecontact point between the cue ball and the object ball. Low speed spinshots seem to be the most common situation for it to strike. Theunexpected change in object ball angle can be up to 10 degrees or more, which is more than enough to cause a miss. You can also see skid on aplain soft follow shot when the cue ball jumps into the air on striking theobject ball and then doesn’t follow as much as expected. Skid is alsocalled “cling” and in the UK it’s called “kick.” In the US, to “kick” at a ballmeans to play the cue ball to a cushion before hitting the object ball.Slide — Sometimes people confuse this with skid. When the cloth isbrand new, the balls tend to slide on it rather than roll. This can be quitenoticeable when a striped object ball banks into the cushion and uponleaving the cushion it seems to slide for a long distance without anynormal rotation. When the cloth has a lot of slide, it is fun to play drawshots at an angle because you can get much wider curves than withnormal conditions. If you want to experience some of this on old cloth, apply a silicone spray such as ArmorAll to the ball. You can use thistechnique in your practice if you are going to a tournament that will havenew, slidy cloth but you can’t afford to replace the cloth on your hometable. The silicone spray will wear off in a few racks, so you will have toreapply it.Running — English comes in two major flavors. Running English refersto side spin that tends to make the cue ball go faster around the table. Ifyou shoot the cue ball from a corner pocket to the long rail by the oppositecorner, and you use English towards that corner pocket (right if goingaround the table clockwise), that is running English. If you have to hitseveral rails before the object ball, it tends to make the table play moreconsistently. Also called “natural” English.Reverse — This is the opposite of running English. It does not refer tobackspin, but rather to rubbing “the wrong way” on the cushion. Try thesame 3-cushion shot you played above, but try it with the other side spin. You will probably find that the wrong way rub slows the ball down, and

Samm Diep

The “Right” ShotSamm Diep (c) April 2007 A few weeks ago, I was being a railbird at a local weekly big table 8 balltournament. This tournament is one of only a handful in town that is sure

to draw in all big dogs. As I watched and noticedthe choices many of these players made, I learned

some new perspectives. However, I was alsohappy to discover I played many of the samepatterns from my seat.In a semi-finals match, my friend Kris had ballin hand with three balls left. One of them was

tied up with his opponent’s only ball. Thecorner pocket nearest those two balls wasblocked by the 8 ball. Another one of hisballs was sitting near the neighboring sidepocket. With ball in hand, he could’veplayed that ball in the side and bumped thecluster and hoped for a shot. Or, he could’vestroked a different ball into the opposite

corner pocket and guaranteed a breakout with a shot at the ball in theside pocket.Instead of either breakout, he chose a defensive shot. His safety ultimatelyled to winning the game, but afterwards I inquired about his shot selection. The stroke shot in the corner seemed logical to me. It was slightlyaggressive but very make-able, especially with ball in hand. He respondedthat he had rattled a few balls in that corner pocket in earlier matchesand it made him a bit nervous to have to stroke a ball in there.I understood exactly what he was saying. Some may disagree, but Icould completely appreciate his decision. When Monica Webb wasrecently in town, the biggest thing she emphasized to me was, “Knowyour own game.” Know your own stroke and capabilities. Basically, playyour game and not someone else’s. In that moment, Kris saw the hairycorner pocket as a limitation and chose to play to his strengths. To him, shooting that ball in the corner for the breakout was, at the time, a lowpercentage shot. Instead, he chose the safety, which he knew he couldexecute.Of course, there’s always the “right” shot. That’s the shot that ties theentire run together. That’s the shot that if we just make it, the entire rackwill fall into place and be that much easier. That’s the shot that in a roomfull of pool players, 9 out of 10 of them would agree on that shot. However,is the right shot really the right shot when we don’t have the confidenceto execute it???There comes a point when, once we reach a certain level, we don’t alwayschoose the shots that the books/videos or our coach or our teammateswant us to. When we’re at the table, there’s only one person that knowswhat the real “right” shot is for us in that moment, in that game. Regardlessof whom you’re playing or what the score is, choose the shot that youbelieve in and believe in the shot that you choose.Samm Diep House Pro at Table Steaks East in Aurora, ColoradoAuthor of “You Might Be A D Player If... ACS Gains National Governing BodyStatus for Carom, Pool and Snooker

With the ultimate goal of gaining cue sport affiliation to the USOC - USOlympic Committee, the American CueSports Alliance (ACS) is verypleased to announce a very significant restructuring within the UnitedStates for all three recognized disciplines of billiards - Carom, Pool andSnooker.Firstly, both the USBA - United States Billiard Association (Carom) andthe USSA - United States Snooker Association (Snooker) formally agreedto be represented by the ACS within the international billiard structure.Having now met the requirements under IOC - International OlympicCommittee continental structural guidelines, the CPB - PanamericanBilliard Confederation accepted and notified the appropriate worldgoverning bodies of the ACS as its newest member. The ACS was thengranted a certificate issued on February 2, 2007 by the CPB that formallyrecognizes the ACS as the “governing body in the Billiard Sport in alltheir modalities Carom, Pool and Snooker, in the United States of Americaterritory.”The CPB represents the Americas in the international billiard structurethrough its confederation membership to both the world governing bodyfor carom - the Union Mondiale de Billard (UMB) and the world governingbody for pool - the World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA).As a next step, this now sets the stage for the CPB to lobby on our behalffor the inclusion of cue sports into the 2011 Pan American Games inJalisco, Mexico. The Pan American Games are produced every fouryears by PASO - Pan American Sports Organization, who within the IOChas represented the National Olympic Committees of all countries in theAmericas, since 1948.The ACS has a board composed of independent League Operators,Referees, Room Owners and the primary non-profit Cue SportAssociations such as the United States Billiard Association, the UnitedStates Snooker Association, the National Wheelchair PoolplayersAssociation and others, so that the future promotion of cue sports in theUnited States can work in unison for the common good.Further information on the ACS is available atwww.americancuesports.org.

that’s sometimes useful if you have to kill the speed on the cue ball, perhaps on a thin cut.Outside — This refers to the side of English “away” from the object ball.If you are cutting a ball to the left, right English would be outside English.Similarly, for a cut to the left, left English would be “inside” English. Notethat “inside” and “outside” refer only to how the cue ball contacts theobject ball, while “reverse” and “running” refer to how the cue ball rubson the cushion. It is possible to have shots with outside/running, inside/running, outside/reverse and inside/reverse. Can you set up shots witheach?Kill — This refers to any technique that removes speed from the cue

Words (continued from page 8)ball. Suppose you have a 30-degree cut shot down the rail and you wantto keep the travel on the cue ball to a minimum after contact. Usuallyyou need to use draw, low speed and outside English. The draw willslow the cue ball down on the way to the object ball. You want the drawto die out and almost turn into follow by the time it gets to the object ball. The outside English will allow you to hit the object ball fuller, since throwwill help the angle, and that fuller hit will take more speed off the objectball. Finally, the side spin will be reverse on the cushion to slow the cueball further.I hope that even if you knew most of the words above, this review gotyou to thinking about them in new, useful ways.

“Walking Highlight Reel” and 12-Time U.S. Billiards Champion Sole NomineeCOLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., March 2, 2007 - Sang Chun Lee, the South Koreanexpatriate who won 12 consecutive U.S. Billiard Association NationalChampionship titles between 1990 and 2001, will be inducted into the BilliardCongress of America’s Hall of Fame in a ceremony set forMay 15 at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.Lee, who died of stomach cancer on Oct. 19, 2004, at theage of 50, will be the second modern-day player knownprimarily for three-cushion billiards to be inducted into theHall of Fame in its Greatest Players division. The first wasRaymond Ceulemans of Belgium, inducted in 2001.“A tall, slender, soft-spoken and dignified man, Lee wasknown and admired around the world for his calm demeanorand his imaginative style of play,” billiard writer and BCAHall of Famer Robert Byrne wrote after Lee’s death in 2004.“He was self-taught and had worked out solutions to manythree-cushion problems that differed from those of otherworld-class players. He was a walking highlight reel.”Lee claimed 10 consecutive Korean national titles in caromsfrom 1978 to 1987, before leaving for the United States in1987 in hopes of re-popularizing the once common gameof three-cushion in America. Lee towered over U.S. three-cushion, winning 12 straight national three-cushion titlesbeginning in 1990. From 1990 to 1994 in U.S. national competition, he won 41straight games in the finals, eclipsing Willie Hoppe’s record of 36 set in 1941.His international titles included the 1993 Billiards Worldcup Association worldchampionship and several other BWA tournaments staged in Europe.Settling in the New York City area, Lee operated two poolrooms in Queens, N.Y.,including the currently operating Carom Café Billiards. He was active as a

tournament organizer and promoter, staging four Sang Lee InternationalTournament events in the 1990s that featured top international talent, as well as14 U.S. Billiard Association events from 1998 to 2002. Lee’s high-run was 28,and his best game was 50 points in four innings.

The BCA’s Hall of Fame Board voted for Lee’s induction in anelection held in late February. The Board consisted of 32members, including current Hall of Fame members, billiardindustry promoters and historians, and members of the billiardmedia. Working without an exclusive list of candidates, Boardmembers were allowed to vote for whomever they wished, andhowever many players they felt deserved immediate inductioninto the Hall of Fame.Lee received the most votes from the Board, appearing on 22 ofthe 31 ballots submitted (70.9 percent). Under current Board rules, the player receiving the most votes automatically would beinducted, followed by the next highest player mentioned on atleast 70 percent of the ballots. In this year’s election, the candidatewith the second-highest vote total was American Allen Hopkins, who was cited on 16 of the 31 ballots (51.6 percent) - not enoughfor induction.Lee will be the 51st billiard industry figure inducted into the BCA’sHall of Fame, which was established in 1966.Hustler-era tournament promoter George Jansco also received

a vote, although he was not eligible for the Greatest Players category. He will beeligible when the Board considers inductees for Meritorious Service in 2008, inaddition to candidates for Greatest Players and the new category of Veterans &Pioneers.

On Saturday and Sunday, March 17-18, 2007, the American Legion inOak Harbor, WA, hosted its annualPartners 8-Ball Tournament, awarding $2,310 in prize money. The tournament was played on 7 -4x8 tables spread among theAmerican Legion, Harbor LightTavern and PW Murphy’s.25 out of the 27 teams that signedup, for a total of 50 players, showedup from as far south as Tacoma,WA, as far north as BritishColumbia, and as far east asSpokane, WA. This was one teammore than turned out at the sametime, last year, and 6 places werepaid! Some great matches were played and fun was had by all.1st Place was captured by Brent Babcock and Larry Binschus. RockyBaird and Dave Bersenadze hung on for 2nd Place. 3rd Place went to

Kelly Selhaver and JerryBogen.Into 4th Place slid Chuck andBen Hassler. Tieing for 5thand 6th Places were Dan Hartand Hans Nendsa with JimDavenport and Tony Chritten.Brent and Larry rolled easilyinto the hotseat, with their lasttwo matches going 7-0 and 7-1. On the other hand, Rockyand Dave played close to thevest, with their last threematches being characterizedwith extreme and extensive

safety play.As they knew Brent and Larryliked spread tables, quickrunouts and fast games,Rocky and Dave employed thesame drawn-out safety tactics, hoping to throw Brent andLarry off of their game. As aresult, Rocky and Dave won avery tight and elongated firstchampionship match to forcethe tiebreaker match. However, things went mucheasier for Brent and Larry inthe second and final match.Larry sewed things up with a greater than 90-degree-angle spin-kick-cutoff of the short rail (we ALL know this shot, right?), pocketing the 8-Ballfor the 7-2 victory and the championship.

Brent Babcock and Larry Binschus

Our deepest gratitude goes to Chuck Hassler, who organized thetournamwent, and to the staff at theAmerican Legion, most of whomwere volunteers, for their wonderfulsupport. We are now workingtogether with the American Legionto possibly improve tournamentconditions by bringing in at least fourtables for the large ballroom and, also, possibly adding more moneyto the tournament payout — keepyour eyes pealed for the nexttournament, which would be theannual 4-Man next February, 2008.

When people go out for a night of pool in Tucson, AZ it’s hardnot to notice league schedules, standings and sign up

informationon nearlyeverybulletinboard intown. The lastfive years hasseen an amazingexplosion inleague play. From pool hallsto neighborhoodbars, nearlyevery venue intown has a

league affiliation on some night of the week. However, no league hasbeen more influential to the promotion and advancement of poolleagues than local VNEA charter administered by Eagle Vending.Ten years ago, Gary Cabralstarted Eagle VNEA with a fewlocal bar owners in Tucson. Sincethen they have grown from just ahandful of teams to an annualmembership of nearly 500 players. With over 60 teams at about 35different venues, many of the topplayers in town flock to the VNEAleagues. The carrot at the end foreveryone involved is the annualinternational competitions in LasVegas. All VNEA members mayparticipate. The close proximity of Tucson to Las Vegas (408 mi.)allows the Eagle VNEA charter to send several dozen players to the

singles and team events. Tucson has definitely been leavingtheir mark on the money board, as well as having a growingnumber ofteams andindividualsclimbingthe ranks

of theintermediate andmastersdivisions. Lastyear a Tucsonplayer, MikeRogers, was afinalist in theVNEA worldspeed poolcompetition and the “Tucson Untouchables” finished 9th in the openteam competition. Also, Justin Whitehead finished 5th/6th in theindividual intermediate 9-ball tournament. This year the charter

expects to see 75 to 100 players make the MemorialDay weekend trip to the Riviera Hotel and Casino.Such achievements would never have beenaccomplished without the help of the bar sponsorslike The Buggy Wheel, Tommy’s Saloon, BrandingIron and Olive R Twist just to name a few. EagleVending has worked long and hard with each venueto provide the best possible facilities and atmosphere. Many of the locations also provide special support forevents such as the Tucson City Championships, andthe Annual Thanksgiving Open Tournament whereteams from alldifferent leagues

get to test their mettle againsteach other. If you are moving to Tucson andare interested in joining the VNEAleague, contact the Pool LeagueAdministrator, Eric Allen, at EagleVending at (520) 748-2955. Youcan also see the web site atwww.eaglevnea.com

A “Classic” Classic BilliardsBy Don “Cheese” AkerlowClassic Billiards, a mainstay in thePortland area, hasmade some majorchanges and youmight want to check itout. Paul Shorzman, owner of Classic’s,took the time out ofhis busy schedule totalk to me and showme the changes hehas made and whathe has planned for thefuture.Paul has ownedClassic’s for 22 yearsnow and it has always been an all

ages pool hall. After running thepool hall as totally non-smokingfor almost a year, Paul decidedthat it was time for a change. Heapplied for a beer and winelicense, separated his room intotwo separate areas, one forsmokers and one for non-smokers.The non-smoking area is anexpanded area with 8 pool tablesall Gold Crowns, five eight-footersand three nine-footers. This is anexcellent place to play if you’relooking for the non-smokingenvironment.The smoking area has undergonemany changes as well. Besidesadding beer and wine, Paul hasrecently added the OregonLottery. Paul commented, “This isjust an additional area that we aresupplying our customers with. It isa form of entertainment that theplayers enjoy. We feel it is the jobof our business to provide ourcustomers with what they want.”I noticed that one of the pooltables had been moved out of thearea where the lottery was and so

I asked Paul about that, “We weretrying to accomplish two things.

One was tocreate an openarea where thelottery machineswould be withoutbeing too close tothe pool tables. We have a lot ofvery good playersin the Portlandarea come in andplay on the fronttables. The onetable was awfullyclose so what I

chose to do was pull my 10'

Snooker table, move my12’Snooker in its place andmoved my 9’Gold Crown toapproximately where the 12'Snooker was. I’ve liked the

change. I’ve got two nice largetables for viewing. If people justwant to sit and watch the gamesor have a beer or eat there’s alittle area now where they can dothat.”Paul has a wide selection ofmenu items for the pool players. They serve fish & chips (cod orhalibut), chicken dinners, homemade pizza, polish dogs, hot dogs, corn dogs, and pot pies

just to name a few. Ice cream ison the menu for desert, alongwith all the various soft drinks,Sobe and Snapple etc.TV’s are the new thing in

Classic’s. Paulused to havejust one TV andcommented, “Idecided that itwas time to putin some niceflat screen TVs.I put in three and I’m in the worksof putting a fourth up. I thinkpeople have really liked them. You can watch the game and playpool at the same time.”Paul opened Classic’s in 1985with a partner. After a year or twoin business he was able to buyout his partner and he and hiswife have run the business eversince. Paul’s brother Nathan isthe on site manager who takescare of the day to day. Nathan notonly takes care of the pool hallbut oversees the Laundromat

next door.Paulremarked,“A lot of our

customersthat want todo theirlaundry willgrab a tableand they go back & forth. I wasable to hire my brother on fulltime after buying the Laundromat. He is a big repair person and ifyou know anything about theLaundromat business you betterhave somebody who is good at

repairs.” I would have reallyappreciated a pool hall right nextdoor to the Laurdromat where Iwashed my clothes! Never hadthe opportunity to take advantageof that.Classic’s has a great pool leaguefollowing among the players.Currently he has the CascadePool League and is looking toexpand the league action. He is

open to having APA, ACS or anyother league in there. Paul said,“We do have eight-footers andnine-footers and of course, ninefooters aren’t normally a leagueplay table. I’m planning on pullingone 9' Gold Crown and addinganother 8' Gold Crown. That waythe league players can play oneither side they want smoking ornon-smoking which is a big plus.”The non-smoking side ofClassic’s typically has a youngercrowd (15-mid 20’s) and Paul islooking to make more upgradesto that side and give it more of afeel like the over 21 area. Paulsaid, “The younger players havebeen inspired by the really good

players that we have coming inhere. They need to see how tofinish a game, or a match or seea good run out or see a greatshot, somebody pulling somethingout and that’s good. When they

9 ball on the table for Kristie to pocket and win with a lead of5 - 4. With lots of stress and many things going through bothplayers’ minds they took a short break and soon, got down tobusiness. Kristie won the 10th game that put her on the hill, 6- 4. The 11th game there were 3 balls left on the table andKristie won with a final score of 7 - 4. Great job now only onemore set to go!Again the ladies took breather to relax and collect theirthoughts before starting the 2nd set. The 1st game got underway with Michelle winning the break. This game went backand forth with a lot of defensive shots, but when it came downto a 2 / 9 ball combo, Kristie got her first win with a score of 1- 0. The 2nd game Michelle sent the 4 ball flying. The cue ballmade contact with the 5 ball which sent the 9 ball all the waydown the table and into the corner pocket, tying up the game1 - 1. Beautiful shot Michelle! On the 3rd game Michelle hada 5 ball run out and a lead score of 2 - 1. The 4th game wasquite tense since both players had a few attempts at trying tocombo the 9 ball. They both went back and forth and eventually

Kristie tied the game up with a 3 / 9 combo making the score 2 - 2. With2 balls left on the table, Michelle won the 5th game and gaining a scorelead of 3 - 2. The 6th game, Michelle had a long kick at the 2 and madeit in the corner pocket. Kristie brokethe 10th game. With a pool player dream of abeautiful spread of the table Michelle ran the tableand gained the win with a final score of 7 - 3 bymaking a 7 / 9 combo. Sincethis is a true double elimination tournament Kristie will have tobeat Michelle two matches of a race to seven. The game got started with Michelle winning the lag. On March 3rd and 4th, theNorthwest Women’s PoolAssociation started its 2007Tour at The Parlor Billiardsand Spirits in Bellevue, WA.It’s hard to imagine therebeing a nicer pool room in thecountry. It was ranked #1 byBilliards Digest after all thetables had just been re-felted,even though the original feltwas in very good condition. The service was incredibledespite the difficult conditionsduring a tournament and thefive inch strip of ice along theforty foot bar is perfect for keepinga drink cold during a long days play.We had 46 players sign up and withat least that many spectators. Fordand I had our hands full just gettingfrom one end of the room to theother. A big reason for the crowdwas the presence of the #2 rankedplayer from Japan, Kyoko Sone, drawn here by the Parlors

$1,250.00 added which included apaid entry to the WPBA

Enjoypool.com 9-BallChampionships being held in LasVegas in May of 2007. She didn’tdisappoint, winning big to get to thepoint with a 7-1 win over JoWoodward, 7-1 over Linda Dick, 7-3 over Kathy Iwata, 7-1 over VikkieKnutson and 7-2 over Cindy Sliva. From the bottom half Shari Rossmade it to the point through hard

work, winning 7-6 over Kim Toops,7-5 over Deby Welfringer, 7-5 over

Liz Cole and a wild and highlywatched 7-6 win over KimJones. The point match hadKyoko still in control beatingShari 7-2.From the B side semifinals, the battle was on with CindySliva getting Mikki Small 7-6and Kim Jones over MaryHopkin 7-5. Kim and Cindy’smatch for 3rd was another nailbiter with Kim losing anotherhill-hill game by rattling thenine. Shari was ready and got

Cindy 7-4 to face Kyoko again forthe finals, but despite an early closescore of 5-4, Kyoko simply madeno errors and took the last fourgames to win 9-4.

We congratulate and thankKyoko and her coach/translatorPaul Potier for their excitement andclass. Thanks also to all the shotclock volunteers, the Parlor staff

by Jean BartholomewThe weather was lousy, (until Sunday), but the facilities at Little CreekCasino and Events center were great! All of the comments I heard wereterrific. The rooms were nice and the service very good. The wing mostof the players stayed in was brand new.Gary Benson, Judy and the capable staff had the tournament running sosmoothly, there just were not any problems. This had to be one, if not,the best regional the Pacific ACS has had, with many more in the future. There were some expected winners and also some unexpected upsets. The most outstanding of these was the 9-ball master singles matchbetween Glenn Atwell, (on the point), and Bob Zack. Amazing! Glennhad made it to the hill, 8-5 in a race to 9. Glenn broke the 9th game andhad no shot, and let Bob to the table, who promptly ran out. With themomentum going his way, Bob proceeded to finish things off with a 9-0second set for the win. A great display of skill between two top players.Hats off to both! They are both winners and will continue to be for manyyears to come. There were many wonderful wins and some pretty heartbreaking lossesfor a few, but over-all I believe everyone really was satisfied. There wassome grousing over players not being rated where they should be, butthat will always be the case. It is never going to be to the completesatisfaction of everyone. A solid rating system just doesn’t exist andsome actually encourage “sandbagging”. This is my personal belief, and I know many people have other ideas, but that’s life. This subject willbe around when most of us are gone anyway.Everyone liked the idea of being closer with a better drive to the LittleCreek facility. Freeway almost all the way. We all look forward to thenext one. Watch this paper for information or ask your league operator.Qualifying for the fall will start in June, most places. Eight weeks in asanctioned league is all it takes to qualify for not just regional PACS, butthe National ACS tournament in Las Vegas. Join now and enjoy the funof a sport that is truly for the players.

THE PACIFIC ACS REGIONAL 8-BALL AT LITTLE CREEK

Bill Mildenberger is in Yuma, AZ with serious health problems andcouldn’t return for this last PACS tournament. He was missed very muchby all. He has had two surgeries to date and will recover a little beforehaving a third one. We miss him and hope for a speedy recovery. It wasvery different without him, but actually went very well. Thank you Judy,Gary, Kit and all who handled things very ably. Get well Bill.Sincerely, All of your friends. “The Break” would like to also extend ourgood wishes to Bill for your speedy recovery.

Editor-Gary Wing, Chicago Poolplayers NewsI just got back from the Blue Chip Casino where they held the Midwest

only women’s tournament in2007 and it is the second stopof the tournament (NorthCarolina is the first). In factmost of the regular top womenplayers didn’t make it to thefinals. I did meet up with Ga-Young Kim “The Little Devil”who ended up taking 3rd place, behind us in the white is VivianVillarreal “Texas Tornado”.Xiaoting Pan took 1st andThornfeldt 2nd place.I was hoping for a rematch ofthe first tournament in NorthCarolina where Ga-Young

played Xiaoting and won but that didn’t happen. ESPN was there filmingthe semi-finals & finals for viewing in the near future, we will keep youposted when that airs. The casino entrance is unbelievable as you can’t tell that your going ontoa boat as there is no ramp like most river boat casinos. You feel likeyou’re in the building the whole time, for those of you who have not beenthere you have to check this casino out it’s great! The weather was great which made the ride there enjoyable, also I wasable to get gas for $2.37 unheard of in Chicago. For those of you whodidn’t make it you have to go next year as this is a great tournamentstarting out with 64 of the top women players. What makes it nice is thatthe room is small and you get a great view from anywhere you sit andafter the tournament the women players are very personable givingautographs on whatever you have and picture taking opportunities; theyalso have many items for sale: posters, shirts, cues, cue balls, etc. themost unique item I thought was Jeanette Lees autographed mini cue(about 36" when put together) with a case for $40.00. The APA wasrepresented and one of sponsors of this tournament.Visit our web site www.custom-studios.com

By TR OlsonOn March 7, 2007 the Northwest billiard communitylost one of its finest players and most fiercecompetitors. Shannon succumbed to a short butvaliant battle with cancer at his family’s residencein Anaconda, MT. He was born August 15, 1963 inConrad, MT and lived in Great Falls most of hislife, until the last year or so he had spent workingand living in Wolf Point, MT. He spent most of hisadult life working as a floor-laying contractor. Heenjoyed all forms of the outdoors, especially rock-climbing, but the true passion of his life wassummed up on the pool table. In the early 1990’s Shannon had alreadyestablished himself as a formidable local player inand around the Great Falls area, but in about 1994he decided to broaden his horizons. Him and Istarted traveling as far as time and money wouldallow us to, which meant nearly anywhere, nearlyevery weekend. Anywhere meaning wherever therewas the slightest hint of pool action or tournaments. Often times sleepingin our cars if we had to. For nearly three years we played every doublesor team tournament available and when that era ended we continued toseek out action wherever it could be found. He excelled at an incrediblerate in the singles competition and was more than a formidable opponentto anyone he faced for the last 10 or 12 years. Among his greatest personalaccomplishments was winning the Salmon, ID open tournament andplacing top 3 in many other top level tournaments all throughout the US.His true love was straight-pool, as is mine, and we often joked aboutbeing born a few generations too late for the hey-day of that game. It

was however his practice game ofchoice and also the game thatmade him the strong player he was. That Salmon tournament makesme laugh; however he didn’t, untilmuch later anyway. I arrived inSalmon the night before thetournament and Shannon phonedand told me he was having cartrouble, but he would be there come

hell or high water, and I was to bid on him in theCalcutta up to $200 I think it was. Being anotoriously high dollar Calcutta I told him OK, butyou know I probably won’t get you that cheap. Thenas the bidding got underway I got into a $1500money match with Tom Baker from Utah andmissed when Shannon sold for a mere $20. Whenhe arrived I sheepishly told him my error, butinformed him that I had managed to get half of itoff from the guy who bought him, he obviouslydidn’t know how good of a deal he had gotten.Long story short, Shannon went undefeatedthrough the tourney and was only due half of theover $5000 first place Calcutta money. He oftenribbed me about the time that I cost him $2500.Oh yeah and Tom beat me 15-0 in the moneymatch, what a bust, nothing like a little salt in thewound. I promised him nothing like that would everhappen again, of course he never sold for $20

again.Over the years before that and since we traveled thousands of mileschasing the 8 Ball if you will and I have more memories than I could everwrite down from our exploits. I will however live with them in my heartforever. I hold memory of a good friend, outstanding pool player, a truestudent of the game, and one of the most worthy road partners a guycould ever ask for. Until that big tourney in the sky my friend, have agood journey and say hi to all the boys, especially Billy, and my girl, if youget a break from the green room that is.

10th Annual World Fingerpool ChampionshipFebruary 11, 2007 was a night in Fingerpool historyat the New California Tavern in Marysville, WA.Sherm ”The Professor” Card went undefeated to winfor an unprecedented 5th time in the sports shortten year history. Also in the historic vein - this was our first year withofficial sponsors! Special thanks to The NewCalifornia Tavern, Transition and Development

Solutions & Bad Man Tees which allowed us to havea cash purse for the first time.More history as “Gramma John” Boykin (pastchampion and second place finisher this year) hadhis third eight ball break! Not an easy task withyour finger. Third Place went to Fingerpool noviceRick Thompson. Growing every year, we lookforward to a bigger championship next year with

more sponsors,bigger pursesand biggercrowds.

A record 20 players participated in themonthly Straight Pool Tournament at Sam’sBilliards March 4th. The luck of the drawput Bob Zack, Willie Gin, Sam Rabito, ArtMay and Scott Robinson into one group, all players who have previously finished inthe finals. In the February finals Bob beatWillie 50 to 5, but Willie beat Bob in thistournament 50 to 41, as well as the rest ofthe players in his group to advance to thefinals. In the finals Willie beat newcomer Chad

Kurokawa, who fell prey to a questionable 3-foul penalty. Chad calledhimself for 3 fouls, misunderstanding that the fouls must be consecutive, but that wasn’t clear until the game was over. The consecutive 3-foulpenalty is a 1 point penalty for each foul plus an additional 15 point lossand the offending player must rebreak with the opening break rulesapplying. Nonetheless Willie beat Chad 50 to 8, so the confusion maynot have altered the results. In the other bracket of the finals Justin Liljebeat Norton Johnson to face Willie. Justin went undefeated all day, including the game against Willie. He had the high run of 35 for the day,as well as the second highest run of 28. Although Wayne Milke, Scott &Stephanie Robinson came in from Goldendale, Washington, the playerfrom the furthest away was Gilbert Bouc from Germany. Many thanks toeveryone for participating. The next first Sunday tournament is April 1st, no fooling. See you then.1st $80 Justin Lilje 2nd $65 Willie Gin3rd $50 Norton Johnson 4th $30 Chad Kurokawa
