When the farmers arrived at the mountain, they saw

the boy laughing at them.

Later, the boy was bored again and shouted out

“Wolf!” a second time.

The boy laughed harder and the farmers were angrier.

But this time there really was a wolf, and it

attacked and killed many sheep.

The angry villagers said: “Don’t cry wolf when

there are no wolves in sight.”

Once again, all of the villagers ran to the mountain.

The third time the boy cried “Wolf,” no one came.

Language Target: Sentence construction, word order, sentence order.

Setting Up: This lesson requires a littlepreparation time – but this only needs tobe done once. Print out the worksheetthen enlarge the sheet as much aspossible on a copy machine. (It’s bestif the size can be doubled (or evenmore).

Prepare 14 small envelopes or zip-lock bags. Cut the worksheet intoindividual sentences – there are 14 intotal. Next, cut each sentence intoindividual words and put one set ofwords into each envelope.

Note : Each sentences uses its ownindividual icon (printed in the upperright corner of the word boxes) sothat the words can be distinguishedfrom the other sentences.

In class, write the following (orsomething similar) on the board:

in park. a dog Two took walkthe boys walk and

Assist students, if necessary, to putthe words into the correct order so that itreads: Two boys and a dog took a walkin the park.

Explain that they are about to do thesame thing with 14 sentences, and thatthe sentences also need to be put into thecorrect order. When they are finished, they will have a famous story.

Getting Started: Divide the class into pairsor small groups (no more than four).Tell the students that there are 14sentences and each sentence has from 9to 15 words.

Give each pair or group of studentsone of the envelopes containing thewords to one sentence.

Note: Give the sentences to thestudents in random order.

The students dump the words ontothe table top and arrange the words intothe correct order. When the sentence iscomplete, one or all of the students needto write the sentence on a sheet of paper. Then the slips of paper are returned intothe envelope which is then passed alongto the next group. Then each pair orgroup gets a new envelope.

Continue the process until all pairsor groups have finished all 14 sentences. The next step is for students to assemble

the sentences into the correct order (theyshould all be written down by now). Ifdone correctly, they will have a simplestory about the shepherd boy who criedwolf.

The teacher should check each pairor group for sentence accuracy bycomparing the story against the masterworksheet.

Variation 1: This is a lot more work for theteacher; prepare one complete set of 14envelopes for each pair or group in theclass. Give all of the pairs or groups allof the envelopes at once then tell thestudents to try to be the first pair/groupto finish the complete story.

Variation 2: With a large class, prepareonly one set of 14 envelopes and dividethe class into fourteen groups and giveone envelope to each group. (Or sevengroups and give each group twoenvelopes, etc.)

When groups have finished withtheir sentences, have them read theirsentences to the rest of the class, andtogether the whole class works at

arranging the sentences into the correctorder to complete the story.

Building Fluency: After all is finished andeach student has the complete storywritten on paper, begin a discussion ofthis famous folktale. Begin thediscussion by asking questions such as:

What does this story mean? What can this story teach us about

making false claims? Can anyone give additional examplesof “crying wolf”?

Writing Practice: This lesson is perfect as adictation practice activity. While pairs orgroups of students work with eachsentence, only one of the students writesdown the finished sentence. After all 14sentences have been put into order, thestudent with the “master” list dictatesthe sentences to the other students in thegroup.
