PLOT

Exposition

1. Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson went to Boscombe Valley to

investigate a murder.

2. Charles McCarthy was murdered at Boscombe Pool. His son,

James McCarthy, is the main suspect.

Rising Action

1. Moran, the gamekeeper, saw Charles and James going towards

Boscombe Pool.

2. Patience Moran saw them having an argument at Boscombe

Pool.3. James’ gun was found at Boscombe Pool. The police think that it

is the murder weapon.

4. James heard his father cry ‘Cooee!’.

5. Charles’ last words were ‘Aaat’ and ‘Raat’.



PLOT

6. James refused to reveal the subject of their argument.

7. He remembered seeing a grey coat near his father.

8. At a local hotel, Holmes, Watson and Inspector Lestrade met Alice

Turner, who believes that James is innocent.

9. Alice revealed that the argument was about her.10. Her father, John Turner, fell ill after the murder.

11. Holmes visited James in prison.

12. James loves Alice but he married a barmaid two years ago in secret.

Climax

1. The next day, Holmes, Watson and Lestrade went to Boscombe

Pool to look for more clues.

2. Watson discovered a set of unusual footprints which have square

toes.



PLOT

3. Holmes found the murder weapon. It is a heavy and sharp stone

which still has blood on it.

4. The murderer is someone who was from Australia.

5. He is tall, left-handed and walks with a limp on his right leg.

6. He wears a grey coat and heavy work boots and smokes Indiancigars.

Falling Action

1. Responding to Sherlock Holmes’ letter, John Turner went to his

house and confessed to killing Charles.

2. Holmes asks Turner to write a confession letter to be used if Jamesis found guilty. If not, he would destroy the letter.

3. Turner was known as Black Jack of Ballarat in Australia and did

things he wasn’t proud of.

4. He moved to England and turned over a new leaf.



PLOT

5. 20 years later, he met Charles McCarthy and he was blackmailed by

him ever since.

6. On the day of the murder, Turner overhears the argument between

Charles and James.

7. He feels that he has no choice but to kill Charles.

Resolution

1. Seven months later, John Turner passed away.

2. James McCarthy and Alice Turner were married.

3. Holmes keeps his promise to destroy the confession.
