THAS on County Linx Radio

The THAS were given permission to set up a display ofour archives at The Hazlitt Theatre, Maidstone forJames Hurn’s fantastic show Hancock & Co on 22nd June. This show featured two of James’s own shows plus arecreation of Sid James’s Dad. As always, James’s showwas brilliant and the audience loved it.

There was a great deal of interest in our Society fromthe archive display as is usual at these types of events.

But one audience member this evening, Steve Kent from County Linx Radio (on holiday in thearea from Skegness), was in the audience and requested that THAS gave an interview.

The interview covered Tony in general, James’s fantastic show plus a run through of thearchive items that we had put on display.

Any reader who wants to hear the interview, it can be heard on County Linx radio (atwww.countylinxradio.co.uk) and is expected to be broadcast in the programme MidweekCounty Life which airs between 4pm and 6pm. At the time of writing, we don’t know if theinterview will be broadcast on 10th or 11th July.

From East Cheam to ClitheroeBy Tim Elms, Archivist

Many of us who love Hancock are of course also fans of other vintage comedy. I know from speaking tomembers that The Goon Show is a favourite, as is Round the Horne. And it is with this wider love of BBCoutput from the 50s and 60s that we have some good news to report. We were contacted earlier in theyear by Danny Halewood from Lancaster who had found us on the internet and had some reel to reel tapesthat had laid untouched for some decades. Some of the tapes were marked “Hancock”, some containedmusic and others were not marked at all. “Would we be interested?” asked Danny. “You bet your life” wereplied!

Danny kindly handed over the box of tapes for us to arrange for them to be played. We then had an ago-nising wait for the tapes to be heard. Would they contain a lost episode of Hancock’s Half Hour? Or anoriginal off-air recording without the subsequent edits? Well, no they didn’t. The Hancock episodes wererecordings of edited repeats and these are all in the archive. But there was a fantastic surprise. There werealso recordings of The Clitheroe Kid and one was a missing episode!

The Clitheroe Kid ran for 16 radio series between 1958 and 1972. It starred James Robinson Clitheroe, bornin 1921, who never grew beyond 4ft 2in, enabling him to play a naughty schoolboy. At it’s peak, it drew 10million listeners. In a remarkable coincidence, he was born in Clitheroe, Lancashire. The missing episodewas number nine from series seven, The Gathering of the Clan, broadcast on 5 January 1964. Two of theguest stars will no doubt be instantly recognisable to members: John Laurie, who comedy fans fondly re-member as Dad’s Army’s Private Fraser, and Deryck Guyler, who worked with Hancock in The Man WhoCould Work Miracles, starred in Men from the Ministry, appeared in Sykes as PC Corky Turnbull, and evenpopped up in A Hard Day’s Night! The recording has been repaired and restored, and safely sent to BBCRadio 4 Extra. As the episode is a Hogmanay special, it is possible that it may be broadcast at the new year.

Finding the tapes has also been very exciting for Danny and his wife Michelle. Michelle’s late mother, Nan-ette, was a concert pianist and the tapes contained recordings of her playing. We were delighted that as asmall way of saying thank you to Danny and Michelle, we have been able to send them digitised versions ofall the recordings so that Nanette’s playing will be enjoyed for years to come. Particularly cherished will bethe recording of Nanette playing Moonlight Sonata.

We are grateful to Danny for getting in touch and entrusting the tapes to us. In another remarkable coinci-dence, Danny was born just a few miles from Clitheroe! Don’t forget, we are always on the look out forreel to reel tapes from the 50s and 60s – get up in the loft now!

@east_cheam_lad‘s Twitter round-upThe @east_cheam_lad Twitter account now has over 8,500 followers and here’s some of the things that fans havebeen tweeting about.

A tweet from @archivetvmus71 provided a link to his clip of Mike Yarwood impersonating The Lad from January1977 which he had uploaded to YouTube. We at Hancock Towers had not seen this clip before and it has now beenadded to our digital archive. Members can watch the sketch atwww.youtube.com/watch?v=w3Kc6wZ9ULY&feature=youtu.be

The tweet also sparked a discussion about who voiced the Hancock puppet in the ITV series Spitting Image. It wasthought to be Hancock fan Steve Coogan but the IMDB website credits Hugh Dennis with the role. It’s possible theyboth voiced The Lad in different episodes but we cannot find confirmation. Can any member help to resolve this?

In the Hancock’s Half Hour episode, The Gourmet, Sid orders a pint of horse’s collar and @shakenstick asks what itis. It could be slang for a beer, or it could be a fictitious brand name? Any ideas THAS members?

Finally, for this round-up, how’s this for a lookalike from @rich_pd? A distinct resemblance between Rik Mayall play-ing Lord Flashheart in Blackadder Goes Forth, and Bill Kerr as Flight Lieutenant HB Martin, DSO, DFC, AFC, in TheDambusters.
