THEBLACK BEAST

By

Edgar A. Bajana

When Evelyn and Emerson rose from the East River unto the pier, the shadow of the Black Beast covered all of Lower Manhattan in blood and darkness. They were the firstto return, since the Black Beast appeared.

"I can't make!" Emerson called to Evelyn who was a few steps ahead. She lookedover her shoulder and saw Emerson folded over on the pier. A cell phone lay next to himbroken and useless. Then, she stared at the chrome tower glimmering in the moonlight. They had to make it to the top of that building. Everyone was counting on them.

"We have to make it! I can't do this without you." She pleaded.

"I can't. My head hurts. It feels like a train running full speed between my ears."

"I know. I know."

"You don't."

" I do. It's how the Black Beast hunts. It messes with our heads, until we've lost allsense of direction. Then, it picks us off, like mice in a maze."

"Why not you?"

"I don't know. It doesn't matter. Get up! We're too close. Look." She pointed at thechrome tower.

"I can't!""We can. Think about our little girl. Think about what she means to you...to us...to

the world.""She gone!"

Evelyn saw the man she loved starting to break.

"The Black Beast ate her! It ate our little girl! It ate everyone it found!"

"Get yourself together!" Evelyn struck him across the face. There was a deep silence between them when they heard the wings of the Black

Beast echo through the night. Even though Emerson was scared, there was no turning back.

Evelyn and Emerson made it to the roof of the chrome building. It felt unstable, ready to folds on itself, like the man beside her. She noticed blood dripping from his earlobeand said nothing. She pulled out a picture of their daughter and placed it in his hand. But,Emerson fell unconscious and the photograph blew away.

Below her, the city was deserted and demolished. The moon flickered and she saw the silhouette of the Black Beast in the frame of the moon's eye. Her eyes widen with details. The Black Beast had wings, a tail and a spinemade of razors. It hovered there, until it sensed Emerson body.

Its wings roared through the night like fire from a dragon. The Black Beast was about to engulf them when the headlights of a commercial

airline shined on the tip of the building. The plane smashed into the beast driving it into theriver. Evelyn watched the beast drown under the weight of the plane. For a moment, Evelynwaited for the beast to shatter the moon calmly floating upon the water.

Suddenly, the moon flickered again, returning her gaze toward the night sky. Thistime, the moon kept flickering until all light disappeared, until Emerson disappeared, until allshe heard was the flapping of a thousand wings.
