News from the Nurse…

With warm weather approaching, and more time spent in the sun, please make sure your student has a water bottle to stay hydrated during the school day.

The sun is a great source of Vitamin D, but to avoid damage to your skin, use a broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 15 or above and limit your time in the sun during the hours of 10AM-2PM. Apply sunscreen before your student arrives at school.

PARENTS OF 5TH GRADE STUDENTS. Scoliosis screening begins for all 5th graders during their gym classes beginning the week of May 20th. Scoli-osis is a curvature of the spine commonly found during periods of rapid growth and can be identified by the following: -Shoulders are different heights-one shoulder blade is more prominent than the other -Head is not centered directly above the pelvis

-Appearance of a raised prominent hip

-Rib cages are at different heights, uneven waist -Leaning of entire body to one side

If left untreated, the condition can progress at a rapid rate. Remember, this is only a screening, not a diagno-sis. In order to visualize the back, girls are encouraged to wear a bathing suit top or sports bra under their cloth-ing. Students may be exempt with a letter from their parents.

IMPORTANT!!! Current 5th graders will need two immunizations to enter the 6th grade in September, 2019. These immunizations are: Tdap booster and meningococcal vaccine. Both of these are usually given on the 11th birthday. Please make a doctor's appointment for your child's eleventh birthday checkup and have the doctor administer these vaccines. Please bring or send the documentation that your child re-ceived the vaccines in to me before school begins in September. If your child's 11th birthday is after school begins in September, you may submit a doctor's appointment card to me by the beginning of school with the scheduled date for the immunizations. Thank you in advance for your cooperation, and If you have any questions, please contact me at 732-264-1107 extension 3003.

Kind regards, Pat Raphael, RN, CSN
