  • Biblical foundation and truth

    • Hebrews 1:1-2 “1 In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.”

    • Written around 63/64 AD • Addressed to Jewish Christians • The point of this text: The Bible is God’s “spoken word”

  • The “spoken word” written and preserved First Five Books Status / description

Genesis 1:1 – 2:4 God dictated to Adam

Genesis 2:5 – 5:4 Adam’s “written” record handed down to Seth

    Exodus to Deuteronomy Moses

The Torah • First five books

of the Tanakh or canonical collection of the Jewish text

    • First five books of the Bible

  • What is the Bible?

  • The Biblical stand on God and creation

    • Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth”

    • The Bible declares: • There is a God • We and the world we live in are created by God • We were created whole and not through a process (i.e. evolution)

  • The Biblical stand on the plants and trees

    • Genesis 1:10 “Let . . . dry ground appear” • Genesis 1:11-12 11“ . . . Let the land sprout with vegetation. . . 12 The

land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

    • The Bible declares: • God created the plants and trees • It was good (i.e. perfect)

  • The Biblical stand on man and his food

    • Genesis 1:27 “. . . God created mankind in his own image. . .” • Genesis 1:29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on

the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.

    • The message: • God created man and gave him the type of food to eat • It was specific - our original diet was to be plant based

  • The Biblical perspective on nutrition #1

    • We are designed to need food • The designated food is plant based

    • Our gastrointestinal tract was designed for plant intake • Plants are more than sufficient to fulfill our requirements

    • God created the microbiota • Plants and microbiota go well together > microbiome

    • Even though there was no death, food was given • No meat or meat based source (i.e. no killing of animals, fish or insects)

  • Evidences of the value of plant based diet

  • Ancient evidence

The first recorded scientific trial was on

    nutrition

  • Background: • King Nebuchadnezzar planned to rule

his kingdom through the “locals” – Daniel and his friends represent the Jews

    • They are to undergo training seminars in the palace

    • The students will have the best including the king’s food and wine

The Problem • Daniel and his friends prefer to obey

God (=eat vegetables and water) • The supervisor’s concern Proposal/Methodology • They eat vegetables and water while

the rest - the king’s food and wine • Observation period = 10 days Result: • They looked and performed better Conclusion: • They were allowed to eat the Jewish

    diet – “vegetables and water”

  • Today’s evidence • Preventive medicine • Prescribed plant based

    diet • Effects on cardiovascular

medicine (a lot of patients were doctors who did not want “bypass” surgery)

    • Weight loss • Healthy lifestyle • Adviser to presidents • Steve Jobs was one of his

    patients

  • Today’s evidence • Saddleback church,

California • Rick Warren - senior

    pastor • Church members

adopted Daniel’s diet plan - plant based diet

    • Reported on effective weight loss

    • Reduction of obesity rate • Healthy lifestyle

  • Today’s evidence • Church Pastor • Developed the Hallelujah

diet – a plant based diet • Reaction to his mother’s

    experience with colon cancer chemotherapy

    • Refused chemo and adopted a healthy lifestyle

    • Lived for another 37 years without chemotherapy

  • Today’s evidence • Biochemist • Studies on nutrition effects

on long term health • Advocacy of a low-fat,

    whole foods, plant-based diet

    • A vegan • Senior adviser to American

Institute of Cancer Research • Adviser to the US National

    Academy of Sciences

  • There is food that causes death

    • Genesis 2:17 “but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”

    • You know what followed

  • The Biblical record on the fall of man

    • Genesis 3:19 “By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food
until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken;
for dust you are and to dust you will return.”

    • The message: • After the Fall death came (everyone will die) • Man has to work to eat and agriculture is not easy • Adam transferred authority over creation to Satan – he became the

god of this world (Matthew 4:8-9; 2Corinthians 4:4)

  • The Biblical record on the effect of man’s fallen nature

    • Genesis 6:13 So God said to Noah, “I am going to put an end to all

people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth.

    • Genesis 6:17 I am going to bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy

all life under the heavens, every creature that has the breath of life in it. Everything on earth will perish.

  • The Flood Evidence

    The Grand Canyon, Arizona

    Fossil Butte, Utah

  • The Biblical record on the post-flood era

    • Genesis 9:1 Then God blessed Noah and his sons . . • Genesis 9:3-4 3 Everything that lives and moves about will be food

for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything. 4 “But you must not eat meat that has its lifeblood still in it.

    • Bible message about food: • We can eat everything except meat that still has lifeblood in it

  • The Biblical perspective on nutrition #2

    • The original diet was plant source • After the flood God officially allowed man to eat everything except

meat that still has lifeblood in it • Today if we classify man according to his diet:

    • Vegetarians • Fruitarians • Meat eaters • Fish eaters • Insect eaters • Combinations (depending on the supply and culture)

  • How long will we live?

    • Genesis 6:3 Then the Lord said, “My Spirit will not contend with humans forever, for they are mortal; their days will be a hundred and twenty years.” (Noah’s record)

    • Psalms 90:10 Our days may come to seventy years, or eighty, if our strength endures;
yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away. (Moses’ prayer)

    • Time difference between Noah and Moses = 1,500 years

  • Old Testament - The nation of Israel

    • When Moses received God’s commandments in Mt. Horeb he also received instructions for the way of living and feeding that meets God’s standards

    • Book of Leviticus 3 and 11 – Israelite “Diet Manual”

    • As chosen people the nation of Israel have to keep standards dictated by God

  • The Biblical perspective on nutrition #3

    • We may be allowed to eat everything • But there are animals, birds and fish that are considered “unclean” • Why? “ground dwellers?”, “dirty?”; I have really no idea

  • New Testament - Jesus Christ

    • Jairus – synagogue ruler

    • Very sick daughter died while he was seeing Jesus

  • “Give her food”

    New Testament - Jesus Christ

  • Biblical perspective on nutrition #4

    • When He raised a dead girl back to life – His first instruction: “Give her food”

    • Principle of “EARLY FEEDING” is Bible-based • After being dead for some time and becoming alive again > early

enteral nutrition is commanded • After resuscitation in the ICU, early enteral nutrition is beneficial • “ERAS” principle > after major surgery early feeding has better

    outcome

  • Spiritual Nutrition

  • Jesus Christ

    • John 4:34 “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work”

    • Jesus’ raised the level of food/nutrition • Nutrition is now attributed with commitment and purpose

  • Jesus Christ

    • John 6:51 “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”

    • Jesus has raised food to a spiritual level and ascribed nutrition to Himself – the source of eternal life

    • “To eat” is to be “one with Him”

  • What Jesus did – salvation for all

  • What Jesus did – salvation for all

    PRAYERS

  • “Being one”

    • 1 Corinthians 8:6 “and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live”

    • Colossians 1:17 “He existed before anything else, and he holds all creation together.”

    • Colossians 2:19 “For he holds the whole body together with its joints and ligaments, and it grows as God nourishes it.”

  • Book of Numbers: God’s favorite symbol

  • Laminin

Laminin seen under the electron microscope

  • Basement membrane: • Binds everything together • Gives shape • Gives strength • Distributes water, electrolytes,

    nutrients • Communication (hormones,

    sub-cellular factors)

  • Thanks to Louie Giglio

  • Jesus Christ

    • John 6:54 “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day”

    • To be one with Jesus means accepting Him as Lord and Savior of your life

    • Jesus will come back as King of kings and Lord of lords on the last day

  • Jesus Christ’s Resurrection

  • Jesus Christ’s Resurrection

    • Matthew 28:6 ”He is not here; he has risen, just as he said.” • Mark 16:6 “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was

crucified. He has risen! . . .” • John 20: 19 … Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace

be with you!” 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side.

    • Message: • Jesus is the Savior and Lord, He is God • All authority in heaven and earth is given to Him

  • Jesus’ resurrected body

    • Luke 24 41 And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate it in their presence

    • The Bible showed us: • There is a resurrected body – Jesus is the first • He eats – He is not a spirit

  • New Testament - The Holy Spirit Acts 10: 9-12 • Peter in a trance saw

    this: • White sheet filled

    with unclean animals

    • He was hungry

  • New Testament - The Holy Spirit

    • Acts 10 13 Then a voice told him, “Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.” 14 “Surely not, Lord!” Peter replied. “I have never eaten anything impure or unclean.” 15 The voice spoke to him a second time, “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.” 16 This happened three times, and immediately the sheet was taken back to heaven.

    • The message: • Through Jesus sacrifice and death on the cross, God has cleansed

everything including those that were restricted from Moses time up to the time of Peter and the apostles

    • Officially all is declared clean

  • The Biblical perspective on nutrition #5

    • Once raised back to life, enteral nutrition is given • To have eternal life, be one with the Lord - “eat My Flesh and Blood”

(=nutrition is not just physical, it is spiritual union with the Lord) • Being one with the creator is manifested in our physical bodies • We will not only have spiritual nutrition, we will also have spiritual

bodies > Jesus’ resurrection showed this – we become “new creations”

    • The Holy Spirit also re-emphasizes that all food is declared clean through Jesus work

  • The Invitation

    • Revelation 3:20 “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.”

    • The door handle is inside • Being one with the Lord is described as an “eating fellowship” or a

    “feast”

  • The Future: The Bible tells us there will be a role for nutrition

  • Revelation 20:1-6 (one thousand year rule of Jesus) • Jesus is the King of kings and Lord of lords • There is perfect justice, but He rules with a rod of iron • The world is in perfect peace (Micah 4:3) • Agricultural prosperity (Amos 9:13) • Pre-Flood Nutrition (= plant based) • Everyone is in complete health (no more disease) with long life span

(Isaiah 35:5-6) – but there is still death • Nature of animals change, fear of man disappears (Isaiah 11:6-8)

    Jesus will establish the Millenium

  • The new heaven and new earth

    • Revelation 21:1-2 1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2 I saw the Holy City, the New Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God.

    • Revelation 21:23 23 The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp.

    • The Bible shows: • There will be a brand new world

  • The new heaven and new earth

    • Revelation 22:1-2 1 Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb. 2 down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.

    • Message: • In the brand new world nutrition will be there! • Everyone will eat from the tree of life (12 crops; one crop/month)

  • Biblical perspective on nutrition #6

    • In the millennium nutrition will be plant-based once again • After the final judgment there will be a new heaven and a new

earth • Water of life will be there, this time it is a river • Tree of Life will also be there providing fruit for food and its

leaves for healing • No more death - living with God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) “forever

    and ever”

  • Ultimately there will be two groups

Group 1: • Those whose names are in the Book of Life (Revelation 20:12-15) • Those who accepted Jesus as Savior will be in the new heaven and earth

enjoying the fruits of the tree of life (John 3:16; Revelation 22:2)

Group 2: • Those whose names are not in the Book of Life (Revelation 20:14-15) • They will burn unceasingly in the lake of fire and brimstone with their

primary diet consisting of torment, pain, regret and gnashing of teeth forever and ever. (Revelation 19:20; Revelation 20:10; Revelation 20:14-15)

  • Question 1: “Are you on the side of

eternity where you can enjoy your food forever?”

  • Question 2: “Will you be on the side of eternity where your food is

    bitter regret and unquenchable thirst?”
