ForewordThe Beyond Heroes Role Playing Game is based on a heavily revised derivative version of the rules system from Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd edition. It also makes extensive use of the optional point buying system as presented in the AD&D Player’s Option Skills and Powers book. My primary goal was to make this system usable in any setting, from fantasy to pulp to superhero to science fiction.
A spacecraft is a vehicle, or machine designed to fly in outer space. Spacecraft are used for a variety of purposes, including communications, observation, navigation, space colonization, planetary exploration, combat, and transportation of lifeforms and cargo.

Section 1: Spaceship DesignationsBattlecruisersThe battleship concept involves large, well armed and well-armoured starships of massive tonnage and capable of meeting almost any adversary. In a battleagainst a superior force, however, the battleship can flee using its own warp drives. The definition of a battleship is a ship which, due to its armament and protection, is capable of standing in the line of battle. When a battleship meets any lesser type of ship, its victory is almost guaranteed. When battleships on two sides meet, victory goes to the betterarmed, better armoured, and better directed ship.
CarriersAssault carriers serve as mobile bases for fighter squadrons. A carrier transports fighters to the scene of a battle, launches them, and recovers and re-arms fighters that survive the battle. Carriers are designed to carry large numbers of small combat craft, which in turn attack the enemy’s combatants or world surfaces. Carriers are used to defend fleets from enemy fighters. They can maintain a combat space patrol.
Colony VesselsColony ships carry more than enough equipment and colonists to set up a fledgling colony on a new planet. Colony vessels used a series of pods to transfer this equipment to the surface. Some types of colony ships can only be used once, as once colonization is complete, the colony ship itself will landon the planet to be dismantled and the materials used to construct the new colony's initial buildings.
Colony ships generally aren't very well armed, even if only because they tend to be outdated more often than not. They carry everything needed for a colony: equipment, construction materials, animal and plant specimens, living environs, and lots of colonists. A typical colony ship was unarmed and may be dismantled at its destination, in order to provide an initial material base for the construction of further colony installations.
DestroyersDestroyers are larger than heavy cruisersand a bit less manoeuvrable but with greater firepower. Their primary missionis to provide protection to other vessels.
DreadnaughtsA massive ship, usually the largest and most powerful ship in the fleet, bristling with big guns. The presence of just one of these in an area can influence strategic calculations.
EscortsAn escort is an often used term for any ships whose primary focus is on providing escort duty to either military or civilian vessels.
FightersFighters and bombers are small attack spaceships. They are fast and manoeuvrable but easy to destroy. Fighters can score hits on enemy minor combatants and degrade enemy escort strength. One squadron per escort is typical for massed volley fire. They can be used to finish weakened ships which have withdrawn from the line of battle for repairs. They can provide cover for boarding operations as well. They can provide close point defense by intercepting homing ordinance targeting

friendly fleet assets. They are invaluable for planetary assaults and are critical for marines to survive. Close fighter supportallows assault capsules to land, supplies to arrive and wounded to be evacuated. Fighter strikes are used to smash hard targets so that marine forces can bypass centres of resistance and maintain an accelerated offensive tempo vital for their style of assault.
Freighters and LinersFreighters are civilian commercial ships with hulls designed for transport of bulk materials from one planet to the next. They often operate over well known, long establish routes. They are usually lightly armed, if at all.
A Liner is a civilian commercial ship designed for passenger transport. intended to carry both passengers and a small amount of freight.
FrigatesA Frigate is a class of ships smaller than a Cruiser and with even lighter armament. A Frigate's primary mission is a defensive role. Providing extra security for merchant ships against pirates and light raiders. The frigate generally mounts enough firepower to defeat most armed merchants, but not enough to threaten a Cruiser or similar warship. Unlike an Escort, which is expected to be able to at least assist in combat with larger warships, most frigates are not. Their ubiquity lends them to being applied to other missions, including piracy suppression, raiding, and ground support missions.
Heavy CruisersHeavy cruisers are among the slowest and least manoeuvrable starships. Heavy
cruisers are being phased out by some races in favour of modern battleships. In battle, Cruisers support and reinforce capital ships which are present and which form the main line of battle, generally from the flanks.
They also perform independent operations, often forming the centre of task forces which have no capital ships. Cruisers are also put to use as independent ships. Cruisers are more lightly armoured and less heavily armed than battleships. Cruisers are assigned tosupport battleships and carry combat to areas where a battleship is not considered necessary. Light CruisersLight cruisers tend to be fast and well-armed, but cannot absorb as much damage as a heavy cruiser or battleship. A light cruiser is as fast as a destroyer with the range of a heavy cruiser. They are not intended to last on the line of battle versus heavier ships. They are used to escort carriers, troop transports, tankers and logistical ships. They are also used to lead groups of destroyers. They scout ahead of main fleet elements and protect the flanks of large fleets.
ScoutsScouts have less firepower than an escortbut greater speed. They can also serve asrescue ships and combat vessels. Although armed their goals is to get information and not to fight.
ShuttlesShuttles are small ships that can land on the surface of a planet and take off again. They can fly into orbit around planets, fly between planets and in some cases between stars. Shuttles are the least expensive spaceships to build.

Shuttles are used to transport passengers and supplies from starships or space stations to a planet's surface, and from planets to ships in orbit. Shuttles range in size from very small for smaller vessels to vessels capable of transportinghundreds for vessels with very large crews. The are usually streamlined for inatmosphere operations, and may have light armaments. This is particularly truefor ships operating in border areas, where they might fill a due role as an ad hoc assault transport.
Space StationsAlso known as orbital stations or orbital space stations, these are spacecraft capable of supporting a crew, which is designed to remain in space (most commonly as an artificial satellite in lowplanetary orbit) for an extended period of time and for other spacecraft to dock.
A city in space where people live and work, usually fixed in orbit around a planet or at a particular point in space. They have a tendency to be very large, sometimes housing an entire city. Many have adopted a wheel design for a centrifuge-based system of gravity (unless Artificial Gravity is employed), but this is not obligatory. If sufficiently large to support a sizable permanent population, a space-station may be referred to as an "orbital habitat" or "space colony". A space station is distinguished from other spacecraft used for human spaceflight by lack of major propulsion or landing systems. Instead, other vehicles transport people and cargoto and from the station.
Outposts can serve as fortresses defending planets and important areas ofspace.
Specialty VesselsThese are specialized vessels outfitted for either Medical, Survey or Repair work. This class includes three different types of ships; Medical, Survey and Repair.
TransportsAn Assault Transport is a combat lander whose primary roles are to suppress the enemy and to ferry troops, vehicles, and combat materiel from space to the surface. These vessels specialize in supporting ground operations, and usually are associated with the delivery of troops in combat zones. They also serve in other combat support roles including combat resupply, medivac, communications, and direct/indirect fire support.

Section 2: The Galactic Federation of Planets
In the early years of the Galactic Fleet, their mission was purely exploration andnot military in any sense, except for weapons designed for defensive capabilities; until the retrofitting of most of their ships and the incorporation of the United Earth Military Command Operations, after the Sathar attack on various Federation ships.
Over time the Galactic Fleet adopted a more traditional military role and assumed its regular place as both the exploratory and the defensive arm of the Galactic Federation of Planets. It also handles scientific, and diplomatic missions, although its primary mandate remains peaceful exploration in the search for sentient life.
Fleet AcademyGalactic Fleet Academy is where recruits to Galactic Fleet's officer corps are trained. The Academy's motto is "Ex astris, scientia" – "From the stars, knowledge." The main campus of the Academy is located on or near Galactic Fleet headquarters on Earth, but there are also other campuses around the world. Admitted students undergo a four-year program of academics and training, after which they are typically commissioned as ensigns.
Fleet ColonialThe GFP Council has to grant permission before a formal settlement is established on any planet. Finding planets suitable for colonization and successfully placing settlers on them is the major goal of the Colonial section, usually implemented under the auspices of the Galactic Fleet. In interplanetary terms, a colony is a settlement on a planet of non-indigenous peoples, generally – though not always – on worlds devoid of native sentient life and where civilian outposts are established for agricultural or commercial purposes.
Within the GFP most colonies begin small, often consisting initially of only a few hundred settlers. Over time, some ofthese colonies expand and grow to support a significantly larger population.Sometimes, however, Colonial has to forcibly relocate settlers because of threats to the colonists' survival or because the GFP had surrendered controlof a colony planet.
Fleet CommandFleet Command is the headquarters/command centre of Galactic Fleet, with its main headquarters in Bern, Switzerland. They are responsible for planning defensive strategies, as well as engaging in weapons research and development.
Fleet Diplomatic CorpsThe Fleet Diplomatic Corps (sometimes referred to as the Fleet Diplomatic Service) is the division of the FederationDepartment of the Exterior which is responsible for negotiating treaties with foreign states and maintaining inter-staterelations and diplomacy within the GFP. It is composed of ambassadors, and executes the foreign policy set by the

GFP President, GFP Council, and GFP Secretary of the Exterior. The Diplomatic Corps are widely considered to be obstinate and an impediment to the effective implementation of foreign policy by many in the GFP government and fleet. Nonetheless, its negotiating skills have proven invaluable in maintaining relatively good relations with many foreign states.
This division also grants diplomatic immunity for many ambassador-grade emissaries and dignitaries, including those of normally hostile governments conducting relevant business with the GFP. However, it is uncommon for military officers to be accorded immunity. A corollary to this immunity ensures safe passage within GFP space.
Fleet Engineering DivisionThe Galactic Fleet Engineering Division is tasked with solving specialized engineering problems. They have a galaxy-wide reputation, including amongthe GFPs' enemies as the undisputed masters of technological adaptation and modification.
Fleet Exploratory ServiceThe Galactic Fleet Deep Space Exploratory Corps is responsible for the charting and exploring of space in and out of GFP territory.
Fleet Judge Advocate GeneralThe Galactic Fleet Judge Advocate General (or JAG) is the branch charged with overseeing legal matters within Galactic Fleet. A Judge Advocate General (often shortened to JAG) within Starfleet was an officer who advised Starfleet on and administered courts martial, as well as overseeing other Starfleet legal matters and personnel.
Legal counsel within Starfleet reported to the senior JAG officer as part of the department known as the Judge Advocate General's Office (or simply the"Judge Advocate's Office").
Fleet Interstellar RescueA specialized small force within the fleetdedicated to emergency response anywhere within the galaxy. Detailed information can be found here. Last minute emergency rescue vehicles. With the GFP pushing further and further into the unknown and uncharted areas, the challenges of space exploration, energy development and scientific technology and superiority are equaled by the dangers that they face. To that end a special rescue force with their own specialized vehicles and equipment was created tasked with spearheading dangerous missions and answering last chance distress calls. Interstellar Rescue are ready to challenge the impossible, defy the most perilous odds and take untold risks in defence of the galaxy.
Fleet Marine CorpsThe Galactic Fleet Marine Corps is the branch of Galactic Fleet that is responsible for ground based military engagements, doing everything from storming beaches to storming planets and spacecraft.
Fleet MedicalFleet Medical is the medical branch of Galactic Fleet.
Fleet Security IntelligenceThis section is an intelligence agency of the Fleet. It is entrusted with foreign anddomestic espionage, counter-espionage, and state security.

Fleet ShipyardsThe Galactic Fleet has multiple shipyards. On earth they are 12 with 1 inorbit. There are 2 on Luna, 12 on Mars, 1 on Phobos, 1 on Deimos, 10 on Venus,100 around Jupiter, 50 around Saturn, 10on Uranus, 1 on Miranda, 8 on Neptune, and 1 on Triton.
Galactic RangersAlongside the growth of human activities in space, criminal activities also grew, and the new colonies requireddefence against various threats. The Galactic Rangers were founded to cope with these tasks with their headquarters on Mars. The Metacyber Series-V Brain Implant, is the closest mankind will ever get to merging with cybernetics. It is a fifth generation implant first used by Metachannellers in the 21st century and enables a dramatic boost of innate abilities due to its unique conversion of bio-electrical power. So far it has provencompatible with all GFP member races and the organization has grown to 5000 rangers.
Their missions tend to require a level of administrative and technical skills that make them more akin to an auditor or investigator and a ranger, in providing knowledge and assistance to settlers whomay be in over their heads--and checking up on those who may be up to no good. What differentiates Rangers from Soldiers? Mainly, their M.O. is to see justice prevail, they're not looking to recoup a profit or corporate interests. Many times this mandate can even put them at odds with private sector objectives. This role often requires them to be equal parts spy, detective, and withmany skills obviously identical to the soldier. However, Rangers are much more like free-wheeling investigators
and independent marshals of the law andless so a straight-up fighting force.
Due to the varied nature of missions and sparse Ranger population for a given jurisdiction, they're used to working soloor in small groups. While they can operate in a larger force, they typically are assigned to smaller task forces (as the only Ranger) or partnered with someone who complements—rather thanmirrors—their own abilities. Galactic Rangers are highly skilled, expertly trained, and well-equipped marshals of justice who operate in outer space and non-terrestrial bodies. They are deputized by the local/ruling space authority to perform a wide range of duties including: law enforcement, investigation, search and reconnaissance,rescue and/or retrieval, a variety of high-risk, tactical missions, and more.
Galactic Rangers also have full knowledge of the ruling galactic authority's government structure, function, and related protocols. The psychological profile of Rangers is typically self-determined individuals who would rather work independently orin a pinch give orders, rather than take them. Their tactical training and firmly, unflagging self-confidence, and belief that their appointed task is for the greatergood, affords the Rangers an added benefit of personal integrity.
Legion of Galactic GuardiansIn the 26th century, the galaxy is a crowded place. There are thousands of inhabited worlds and intelligent species, and very few of them get along with each other. However the Galactic Federation of Planets believe that a united galaxy is the best solution for everybody. Founded in 2307 its initial

purpose was to aid in the then war against the Tsaurid Empire. After the war ended it was retasked to handle conflicts between systems, and defeat meta powered enemies. Membership fluctuates but there are currently about 30 members. The Legion has its own small fleet (currently about 5) of specially built light cruisers, known as Legion cruisers. Whenever new technology is created for the fleet the Legion vessels are among the first to be upgraded.
Main FleetThe Main Fleet consists of all the starships of the GF fighting forces. Its mission objectives are to transport smaller vehicles and troops to the battle zone as quickly as possible, to engage enemy starships in battle, and to act as command platforms for mecha and troops operating in the battle theatre.
The Main Fleet is divided into 10 Command Fleets each consisting of a Battlecruiser as flagship to approximately 1000 starships. Each Command Fleet is divided into two Tactical Fleets each under the command of a Destroyer. Tactical Fleets consist of 500 starships. Light or Heavy Cruisers are in charge of mission specific Task Forces within the Tactical Fleets. Each Task Force consists of 100 starships.
The Command Fleets are rarely called together unless a large-scale military operation (such as an all out assault on an enemy race during a war) or an extreme emergency arises. Otherwise ships within the fleet can perform a widevariety of specific missions within a sector of space, within a solar system, or in orbit of or on the surface of a planet.

Basically a mobile shipyard these carry large quantities of spare parts, raw materials to manufacture spare parts and trained personnel to handle the actual repairs. The main purpose is to support afleet away from its base by allowing for more intensive repairs to be done on the spot rather than requiring a ship to returnto base and in extreme cases patching upa badly damaged ship enough for it to get back to base rather than having to be scuttled.

Weapon Systems:Lasersonic: 2 forward in the nose of the cockpit.
2 forward mounted in the wings of the AVT, near the base of the wing where it connects to the main body. These lasers can be fired in any mode (the beams exitthe hip-mounted wing units in soldier mode) but can only be aimed along the front arc of the mecha (max angle is about 45 degrees in any direction from the nose). 1 mounted on the head of the mecha in soldier mode, and is located in the central dorsal section of the main body pointed rearward in fighter and
gerwalk modes. The laser can only fire to the rear of the fighter in these modes; it cannot be turned to fire along another arc.
Assault Missiles: 10 per wing. Each leg of the AVT contains an enclosed missile bay which holds 5 missiles each.
Gunpod: The main weapon of the AVT-1 is the new Gallant Gun Pod which is mounted on a special hardpoint below the AVT in fighter mode, and is hand-held in gerwalk and soldier modes. It uses clips of ammo with 2 spare clips mounted on the back of the AVT's bulletproof shield; replacing a clip takes two melee actions and can only bedone in Gerwalk or Soldier mode. The gunpod does 4D6 for a short burst, D6x10 for a long burst, or 2D6x10 for a full melee burst. Each clip holds 400 rounds, equal to 40 short bursts, 20 long bursts, or 10 full melee bursts
The AVT-1 was designed and built during the Federation's war with the Celestial Alliance and proved invaluablein deep strike missions on shipyards. The AVT was plagued with problems and mishaps throughout the course of its testing. Due to difficulties in controlling such a powerful variable fighter, the prototype was damaged several times and several test pilots were killed during the early trials of the aircraft. Eventually these problems were overcome and the AVT-1 has enjoyed a long and successful career.

Rifle: The main weapon of the AVT-2 isthe new Rail Gun Rifle which is mounted on a special hardpoint below the AVT in fighter mode, and is hand-held in gerwalk and soldier modes. It uses clips of ammo with 2 spare clips mounted on the back of the AVT's bulletproof shield; replacing a clip takes two melee actions and can only be done in Gerwalk or Soldier mode. The AVT-2 is a heavily armed, and transformable fighter that was pressed into service by the Federation as the older, standard AVT-1 fighters were being lost in severe numbers. The initial fighters were used it so well in defending an outpost that hardly any Arcturan fighters could get to the ships in the AVT-2’s vicinity.

Interstellar Rescue
The team's headquarters is on an island near Vanuatu. Its main building is a hugepyramid containing an entire city inside known as the Arcology. A space station in orbit is dedicated for use by IR and monitors mayday calls. This is made easier by a well maintained series of communications array platforms, which utilize hyper-subspace technology to greatly reduce the time it would normally take for a message to reach its destination. The arrays make use of cosmic field collector and transmitter hardware. The arrays are visited regularly by fleet engineers for periodic maintenance or upgrades. The central faceted dish and three outer articulated antenna paddles can bore deep through subspace to pick up faint whispers of signals that might normally have been considered lost through energy dissipation over tens of thousands of light-years. The longer, multi-panel collectors comprise the omnidirectional detector system, which tells the array to slew around to maximize signal energy input. Different energy levels can be focused by the dish into a mobile feed horn "cab" riding hundreds or even thousands of meters away from its docking base. The cab contains banks of subspace preprocessors running at FTL speeds and can transmit preliminary results to the array's main computers via
the short-range link or directly to earth by way of standard subspace radio.

Survey ships are specialized starships that are used for scientific research missions, such as observing the collapse of a star, mapping newly discovered planets and nebulae, or simply being an isolated location for hazardous experiments. Most science vessels are not designed for long term missions. A science vessel (or research vessel) is a limited-role starship. Completely modular, the craft are divided into three basic sections: the command module, the passenger module/service pod, and the superstructure (containing the landing gear, access corridor/galley, aft compartment, fuel tanks and main propulsion system). The command module of the Shuttle can detach from the main body enabling it to dock with another compatible craft or for use as an emergency escape capsule. Several typesof pods could be used, depending on the mission.
Passenger — The standard passenger module, provides maximum seating space for thirty two people.
Transport/Supply — These are used to transport supplies and equipment rather than passengers. They are designed to carry equipment and have limited seating space for passengers.
Docking — Usually a standard pod fittedwith an extendable airlock to enable docking with another craft in space.
Freighter — These specialized pods are used to transport dangerous substances; unlike other Shuttles, they are heavily shielded to protect their crews from radiation and other hazards. The waste canisters are carried in a 'pallet' type podwhich links to a conveyor belt at the disposal areas.Laboratory — A specialized pod which carries equipment of a more scientific nature than the standard Shuttle; they areusually fitted with additional airlocks for

Like the Lightning, the Thunder is a separate and distinctive fighter. However, it can connect to the Lightning, effectively becoming one large war machine. Together, the Thunder adds a barrage of missiles and bombs while still attached to the Lightning. When the situation demands it, the two can detach and fight as two completely independent combat units.
The Lightning and Thunder combinationis usually used when entering a planet's atmosphere from space (or exiting an atmosphere), first strike (then separate toengage in separate combat, effectively doubling the number of planes) and space combat. The Thunder Bomber is designed specifically to be a heavy back-up or counterpart to the speedy Lightning. Consequently, the Thunder is much larger and laden with explosives.
