Carter, “Each One Minister.” The sermon series and study are based on Paul’s letter to the Ephesians. “Out of the generosity of Christ, each of us is given his own gift.” 4:7 Everyone has been gifted for ministry! Ministry is why the Church exists! Using our unique gifts the many ministries of Bethany forms Christ in us, even as we share Christ with others. “He handed out gifts of apostle, prophet, evangelist, and pastor-teacher to train Christ’s followers in skilled sevant work, working within Christ’s body, the church, until we’re all moving rhythmically and easily with each other, efficient and graceful in response to God’s Son, fully mature adults, fully developed within and without, fully alive like Christ.” This year we celebrate our unique giftedness. We celebrate the many ministries of Bethany. We celebrate the gift of the Friendship Center with a dedication on September 29 th , “Friendship Sunday.” We will host Ministry Fair. All the unique ministries of Bethany will be on display between the two Worship Services. Invite a friend and enjoy breakfast as you discover how God might be calling you to do something new with your unique giftedness! “We take our lead from Christ, who is the source of everything we do. He keeps us in step with each other. His very breath and blood flow through us, nourishing us so that we will grow up healthy in God, robust in love.” Peace of Christ, Pastor Cindy Muncie The Bethany Buzz Bethany United Methodist Church 1853 Maybank Hwy. This Choir has begun practicing the Christmas Cantata. (No…it really isn’t that far away!) We would welcome anyone who would like to join us. We really do need some men! Choir practice is on Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m., and we would be happy to have some new faces.

The Bethany Bells will begin practicing on Thursday, September 12 at 6:00 p.m. Even if you have never played handbells we would welcome you to join us. If you can count, you can play. We have several openings so come try it out!

TERRIFIC TUESDAY All Older Adults are invited to join in a pot-luck lunch on Tuesday, September 24th, at noon. Meat will be provided but please bring your favorite dish to share and join us for fellowship. Following lunch Pastor Cindy will do a short survey on the book of Genesis. This will be the first in what we hope to make a monthly lunch. Plan to join us! MINISTRY FAIR This year our stewardship emphasis is “Each One Minister”, a study on how God has gifted each of us for ministry. So to celebrate our many ministries at Bethany, we want to host a Ministry Fair. Each group of the church is being asked to decorate a table with information about your ministry. Use pictures, sign-ups, flyers for special events, giveaways like candy, or props that illustrate what God has called and gifted your group to do through Bethany. Choose an available table in either the Friendship Center or Fellowship Hall to set up. Tables will have clothes and be available to you Friday and Saturday prior to September 29th. Our District Superintendent, Rev. Dr. Sandra Stevens-Poirel will be stopping by to have a look! Another way to serve is to volunteer service or breakfast items for our breakfast that day. Then everyone invite friends, both old and new, to join us September 29th, Friendship Sunday to dedicate the new Friendship Center and find your calling to minister through Bethany! CHARGE CONFERENCE Our annual Charge Conference will be on Sunday, October 6th, at 1:00 p.m. This is the annual meeting of the church led by our District Superintendent. All members are welcome however only members of the Administrative Council may vote. If you have reports that are to be included please have them in to the church office no later than THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 19th. If you have questions regarding whether you need to turn something please call the church office.

BUDGET REQUEST FORMS are on the table by the church office. If you are a committee chair for 2019 or will be for 2020, please pick up a work sheet and work together to submit your 2020 requests as soon as possible. We need to have our budget finalized with approval of the Administrative Council, prior to Charge Conference on Oct. 6th. Therefore, we would like to receive all requests by September 1 but definitely before Sept. 6th, so that we are able to prepare a budget before the Admin Council meeting on September 9th. Thank you. Pam Riggs, Finance Committee BETHANY PUMPKIN PATCH 2019

Everyone get ready!!! The pumpkins are coming! Gear up for our Pumpkin Patch again this year. An entire truck-load of 3,000 pumpkins will be arriving on the church on Saturday, October 5th, at 10:00 am. We will be asking the JICHS football team to help us unload once again. We also need as many Bethany volunteers as possible to help with the unloading. The more volunteers, the faster we can get done. There’s something to do for all ages; from unloading to sorting mini-pumpkins on pallets to providing support. Breakfast will be served at 9:00 prior to unloading.

The Pumpkin Patch will be open every day from October 7th through the 31st, during the hours of 11:00 am-7:00 pm.

We also need volunteers to work the daily shifts. Shifts each day are from 11:00 am-2:00 pm, 2:00 pm-5:00 pm and 5:00 pm-7:00 pm. Signups will begin in September and continue through October. It takes everyone giving a little of their time to make this event a success! This is our largest fundraiser of the year to raise money for Bethany’s programs and missions. Thank you for the support of Bethany and for helping with this outreach service to the community! Julie BLOOMING AT BETHANY SURVEY Thank you for taking time to fill out and turn in a survey of interests. We’ve learned that there are a lot of interests at Bethany. Some of the interests represented can be pursued by Senior Citizens at the Senior Center but many of those responding are not in that age group or eligible to attend there. So we want to offer opportunities for all people to grow and create as they enjoy friendship. We hope you will pursue those interests and use them as invitations to invite friends into our fellowship. The newly renovated Friendship Center is available to groups wanting to meet. We are praying that this facility will foster many friendships. Results: Prayer, Community Ministry, Working with Youth, Missions, Photography, Drama, Activities for Children and all ages received some interest. Studying books of the Bible, Meditations and Listening for God, Evangelism, Activities with other Churches, Arts and Crafts, Dancing, Yoga and Stretching, Music, Book Club, and Cooking received the most interests. Next Steps: The surveys will be shared with our planning groups such as unpaid staff meeting, Evangelism, Discipleship, Adult Ministries, and Family Ministries, and any others that may be interested. If you would like to create a new group and use the Friendship Center or any of the classrooms at Bethany as a meeting space, please schedule with Melinda in the church office.

New Members John Wiggins is a lifelong resident of James Island and currently lives in West Ashley. He is an alumni of James Island High and the College of Charleston. John is retired and just happens to be the son of our very own, Joyce Wiggins. John transfers from Westminster Presbyterian and joined our Bethany family on July 28, 2019. Welcome John!

Alex (Alexandra) and Kevin Speers live on Johns Island after moving south from Virginia. Alex is from Manassas, while John hails from Richmond. Both of them lived in Farmville, Va., while attending Longwood University. Alex is a Special Education teacher and Kevin serves the public as a City of Charleston Police Officer. They enjoy keeping in shape by working out at the gym. When they’re not watching an episode of “This is Us,” you may find them two-stepping to country music. They both joined our Bethany family on August 4, 2019. Welcome Alex and Kevin!

WHY NAME BADGES? Why are some people wearing name badges? Do I need one? Ushers and Greeters are wearing name tags to identify themselves to visitors in the event that the visitor might need assistance or have a question about our services. Other church members wear the name badges to identify themselves as being approachable, friendly and open to meeting and greeting strangers as well as church members. Having your first name printed boldly on the tag makes it easy for people to greet you and use your name. It’s just a friendly gesture for a church who prides itself in being “The end of your search for a friendly church.” How do you get one? One has already been printed for you and is on the table in the Narthex. A greeter or usher will help you find yours. If, for some reason, your tag is not there, or is not correct, please let a greeter know and one will be made for you. What if I don’t want to wear a badge? That’s fine, not everyone is comfortable with doing so and shouldn’t feel that they have to. Do what is comfortable for you.

CELL PHONES AND CHURCH-POSTER FOUND IN A CHURCH IN FRANCE (Translated) “When you enter this church it may be possible that you hear “the call of God.” However, it is unlikely that He will call you on your mobile. Thank you for turning off your phones. If you want to talk to God, enter, choose a quiet place and talk to Him. If you want to see Him, send Him a text while driving”
