The Bethania Blade
January/February/March 2020
“As a called people of God and as members of Bethania,
we will grow in our faith and share it with others”
With Ash Wednesday only a short time away, I can’t help thinking of a small but
significant event that occurred on Ash Wednesday a year ago.
You may remember that that is the day a cat was found trapped behind the church,
frozen into the inch-thick sheet of ice near our trash cans. The cat was rescued and given
into the care of the Wisconsin Humane Society. They named her “Bethania” (thank you!).
She lost her tail, her right rear leg, one of her front toes, and the tips of both her ears, but
she survived.
I was thrilled to adopt “Bethie” and am pleased to report that, one year later, her recovery is remarkable.
She rockets around my condo like a little missile; plays enthusiastically with all the cat toys and her cat sibling;
loves to nap in sunny warm spots, and thoroughly enjoys lots of “scratchies” and cuddles. She is a very sweet
and happy cat.
There was a point last year, while she was a stray frozen to the ice and suffering from hypothermia, that she
was probably fearful, desperate, and had little hope. As a stray, she probably didn’t have too much close
contact with people and might not have trusted them. Despite this, when Jacci Young pulled her out of her
hypothermic stupor by moving the trash can, she wisely decided the best option was to call for help – loudly.
She began meowing like she probably hadn’t before and certainly hasn’t since (she chirps and squeaks now,
but doesn’t meow). That is how she came to be rescued.
I’m fond of saying that if we didn’t need each other, God would have only made on person at a time (In
fact, say it elsewhere in this edition of the Blade!) While it is true that no human relationship is perfect, it is
also true that God gave us to one another as a gift. But, like any gift (including faith, itself) we have
responsibility to be good stewards and users of this gift. One way is by making a conscious effort to be kinder
and more understanding of the people we are least likely to cut some slack: those who are closest to us.
Just as important is to follow the example of Bethie the Cat. When she needed help she did two important
things. She decided to trust someone who might help her, and she asked for help! Trusting one another and
asking for help can feel very risky, but the bigger risk is allowing our relationships (and possibly our hearts) to
freeze solid. That’s not what God intended for you at all.
Did you felt compassion as you read about poor Bethie frozen into the ice? It may not be literal ice, but
when we need help or support and don’t let others know it or don’t ask for help, we’re in much the same
situation. Those around us who are in situations by which they feel overwhelmed can also feel “stuck,” too.
Let us share compassion with others and continue to “Bear one another’s burdens, for in this way you fulfill
the law of Christ.” (Gal 6:2) Let us also have compassion for ourselves, by allowing others to help bear our
burdens, as well.
Blessings,
Pastor Heather

LOVE, NOT HATE
“Love, not hate” is the theme this year for our life as followers of Christ… especially in our life beyond the walls of our congregation.
Love instead of Hate and Judgement is exactly what Christ brought to each one of us. His great commandment wasn’t “Go out there and point out how everyone else falls short and, if they don’t listen call them names.” No! It was “Love one another as I have loved you. This is how they will know you are my disciples: if you have love for one anoth-er.” (John 15:12)
We find ourselves in an increasingly divided society, where ugliness and name-calling are becoming alarmingly normal. With the political season heating up, it is likely to become worse. We are encouraged almost daily to judge, label, and marginalize those who are not the same as us.
When we stop and think about it, nobody really likes it… but it keeps going on and on. So, how do we change it?
One person at a time…
One conversation at a time…
One moment at a time…
Jesus gave us the very thing we humans most need: love. He gave us the thing our current society causes us to long for more than ever: love.
He gave us love…
And told us to share it...
It’s not always easy… but it is likely to be the most amazing thing you do in your life. Love, you see, is the one precious resource that doesn’t diminish as we use it. The more love we give away, the more love we have.
This means we have in inexhaustible supply of Love to offer a fractured hateful society… and to each other.

How can I support someone I don’t know
well? Each month we publish a Care and Concern list of members who could use pray-
er and support for various reasons. It is important for us, followers of Jesus and as a
church family, to support one another. But what if (for whatever reason) you don’t
really know people on the list very well?
First, keep in mind you already know the 3 most important things about whomever
you see on the list: like you, they are beloved children of God; they are members of
your own church family; and they have a burden right now. You don’t even have to
know what their burden or challenge is to support them.
How do you do it? It’s really quite simple. Show them that “snail mail” (U.S. Postal
Service) isn’t just for bills and advertising fliers. Send them a postcard, note card, or
even a “thinking of you” type greeting card. What you write doesn’t need to be all
that complicated. An excellent message is something as simple as: “Thinking of you
today, Your Name, from Bethania Lutheran.” Other choices could be “I prayed for
you today;” “I thought this might bring you a smile;” or “Sending this to brighten your
day.”
If you know more and want to say more, that’s great! Maybe to someone who
just moved to assisted living or a nursing home you might say “I hope your move
went smoothly and you are settling in to your new home.” A shut in might appreci-
ate, “I know you can’t be with us at worship as much, but I wanted to let you know
we think of you.” One of our college students could get “The end of the academic
year is coming fast. I pray it all goes well.”
What about someone I do know but haven’t seen in worship for a while?
Sending a note to someone you haven’t seen at worship in a while is actually an
important and helpful thing to do – it can mean so much coming from a fellow
member. Like the Care and Concern notes, simple, caring statements a good
choice. Stick to what you know (not what you don’t… like the possible “whys.”) You
might say “I was thinking about you today and realized it has been a while since I
saw you on a Sunday. I hope all is well. Please know that, whatever has kept you
from coming recently, you are cared about and missed.”
If you don’t have any note cards or greeting cards handy, please select some
from the basket in the Hearth Room (and feel free to add to that basket if you’ve
got too many notecards at home!)

Each Wednesday in Lent features a casual soup supper in the Fellowship hall at 6:00 followed by Worship in the Hearth Room at 7:00. Many people go to both, but you may also go to just one of the two on any given week!
Worship is about 45 minutes and uses the perennial favorite: Holden Evening Prayer. Each Lent the Pastor Heather’s homi-lies follow a theme. This year it is “Tales and Truth: favorite stories that remind us how to be God’s children.” Pastor will be using some of her very favorite stories from over the years and hopes this will be a memorable Lent for us all.

Making Lent a Blessing not a Burden Whether you look forward to it or dread it, Lent is coming very soon! Because Lent is so
strongly associated with “giving up” something that you like and also with not being able to
do certain things (like have meat on Friday), many of the faithful have unconsciously come to
associate it with punishment. It reminds us of when we were kids and weren’t allowed to
have dessert or watch t.v. because we’d been naughty.
Lent, however, is not meant to be a punishment. Lent is a valuable opportunity to unbur-
den ourselves of the weight of sin, disappointment, regret, and failure …it’s supposed to be a
relief! The whole “giving up stuff” was always intended as a spiritual discipline - not some
sort of Divine way of making you go stand in the corner.
So how do we turn that around?
If you “give up” something as a Lenten discipline, remind yourself it’s not a punishment
but a way to remind you to focus on your relationship with Christ. One way to do that is,
when you want whatever you “gave up,” to think of what Jesus gave up for your sake.
If you “take on” a discipline such as using a devotional, increasing prayer, reading the Bi-
ble, or doing service, remember that this is also to deepen your relationship with Christ… to
center you and draw you closer to the one who cherishes you beyond measure.
Try to participate in Lenten fellowship and worship. The soup suppers are a relaxed way
to spend time with the companions on your spiritual journey: members of your church family.
If we didn’t need each other God would only have made one person at a time. So, get to
know some of the people God has given you over a comforting bowl of hot soup!
You may not make it every week, but try to participate in the worship, too. The service is
about 45 minutes and features the lovely Holden Evening Prayer. The theme for the homilies
this year is storytelling.
Lent is an opportunity – we hope you seize it.

Dear Reverend Bumstead,
I want to thank you for opening the
doors of Bethania to the membership
and guests of Preservation Racine. We
were also so happy to see many of
Bethania’s parishioners and guests joining us for Michele Caskey’s excel-
lent presentation. We hope it was enjoyed by everyone.
Thank you for your very kind addition to the program informing us about
the history and background of Bethania Church in Racine. It is always
good to hear about Danish people in our past—in the past of our commu-
nity.
Preservation Racine appreciates your hospitality and the gracious help
and kindness from Cathi Webster, She was excellent. It was the perfect
place to have our program and we are so grateful to Bethania for provid-
ing that place. I am looking forward to returning for the Aebleskivers!
