Task: Due to its exposed location, theexterior of the buildings have towithstand extreme weather conditionsand even though they were paintedaround 6 years ago, Barrie HaighPainting Contractors were called in torenovate the outside of the buildingsto ensure that the surface remained intop class condition.Because of the location of thedevelopment and its close proximity tothe road, cherry pickers, rather thanscaffolding were used to complete thehigher parts of the building. The individual flats within the buildinghave their own characteristics andeach had their own challenges, buteven so, the finished result wasoutstanding.
Product: The first task was to preparethe surfaces. The buildings beingpainted were power washed to removeany loose and defective paint beforeusing Johnstone's Pliolite® BasedMasonry Finish to paint and protectthe masonry surfaces.

Preparation advice
Check for surface imperfections where water can collect such as joints, holes and ledges.Use a good quality All Purpose Filler to repair these areas. Algae or fungal growth should betreated with Sterilisation Wash.
Loose powdery masonry surfaces should be sealed with Johnstone’s Stormshield Stabilising Solution.
Microporous systemsTimber to be over-coated with a microporous system such as Johnstone’s StormshieldFlexible Gloss, Exterior Satin Finish Woodstain or Opaque Wood Finish, should be given apre-coat of Johnstone’s Woodworks Exterior Universal Primer before applying the correctsystem as directed.
Concrete, brickwork, cement rendering, masonry - fresh orpreviously paintedThoroughly brush down with a stiff brush to remove any dust or surface contamination.Repair defects and cracks with the appropriate materials.
On porous or friable surfaces apply one coat of Johnstone’s Stormshield Stabilising Solutionor Johnstone’s Stormshield Quick Drying Stabilising Solution. If the surface is very sound, apply finishing coats of the required coating direct. When finishing with a solvent-bornesystem, first prime with Johnstone’s Alkali Resisting Primer. Johnstone’s Stormshield PlioliteBased Masonry Finish is self-stabilising and can be applied directly to the substrate as directed.
Fletton common bricksPaint adhesion problems can occur on this type of external brick. The presence of kissmarks, dark, smooth and sometimes slightlyglazed areas can result in paint failures in lessthan two years.
In addition, a tendency to form powdery surfacedeposits of efflorescence can also causesubsequent failure. All paint types are affectedand thick films can fail extensively due to theadded effect of trapped moisture.
External rendering, carried out in accordancewith BS5262, can provide satisfactory adhesionfor paint systems. Sand-faced and rustic Flettonscan be painted satisfactorily.
British Board of AgrémentThe British Board of Agrément is designated byGovernment to issue European Technical Approvalsbased on the assessment of products forconstruction. Johnstone’s productscarrying this logo have undergonerigorous independent testing andreceived approval from the BBA.
