•  Goals of this project were to enhance fish and wildlife habitat in Burrard Inlet, and to increase public access to nature.

•  Once combined with the Green Shores principles, the project team had a clear path to successful completion

•  The GSCD Gold rating reinforces the positive work the

project team and project partners delivered at New Brighton Park, both for the environment and the community.

Page 30: The Benefits of Green Shores Two Projects Start to Finish · The Benefits of Green Shores ... (Chum and Chinook) and for resting and feeding shorebirds v Restore Hastings Creek through

• The urban location of this project proved to be challenging, specifically the robust consultation that was undertaken due to a variety of local resident and stakeholder groups.

• Winter construction work also proved to be a challenge due

to an extremely wet and cold winter experienced in 2016-17, followed by severe summer drought conditions in 2017.

Challenges:

Page 31: The Benefits of Green Shores Two Projects Start to Finish · The Benefits of Green Shores ... (Chum and Chinook) and for resting and feeding shorebirds v Restore Hastings Creek through

stewardshipcentrebc.ca

• Partnering with the City of Vancouver/Park Board on a project that was very important to many local residents and park users

• Collaborating with the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh

Nations in such a positive, progressive way • Re-opening this area of Burrard Inlet to tidal influence for the first

time since the 1960s. Juvenile salmon have been observed utilizing the wetland since project completion.

• Receiving local and international recognition from Green Shores and

others.

KeySuccesses:

Page 32: The Benefits of Green Shores Two Projects Start to Finish · The Benefits of Green Shores ... (Chum and Chinook) and for resting and feeding shorebirds v Restore Hastings Creek through

stewardshipcentrebc.caGreen Shores Verifier

Key Success/Challenges of Project: •  Huge boost to habitat diversity, quality and quantity = dramatic change

at site •  Biggest challenge was remediation of contaminated soils Key Success/Challenge of Verification Process •  Documentation was clear and well organized •  Project overview captured the project’s key aspects and design

elements
