the Islands Team Races

After holding the Southern Area

Championship in June we doubted

this years event would be well sup-

ported. Thankfully the usual crowd

of 15 Welsh Harp boats turned up,

(only 10 visitors for the June

event). I suppose we are no longer

surprised by the poor turn-out of

Poole boats (6), and this included James Stafford,

still a B.T.Y.C. member.

The mornings light winds created a long, slow

race for the anti-clockwise route won by, surprise-

surprise, Richard Lord of Seahorse.

Efforts by Baldrick to have a shorter race after

lunch created not only confusion but total rejec-

tion, and a sore throat shouting successive

changes of course. Baldrick’s embar-

rassment was completed by the wind

stiffening nicely and the racers enjoy-

ing an excellent, long, spinnaker reach

from Piccadilly to the finish line. Oh

Yes, Richard Lord won again.

The event was won by B.T.Y.C. ‘A’

team (bye-bye trophy) with very con-

sistent individual results Roger

Walton 2 & 3 and Za Jelliffe 5 & 5.

Mike Williams was the best of the Poole boats

with a 4 & 4.

Many thanks to Phil Hoath for shepherding a

small visitors cruising group on the Sunday.

7/8 June - Poole Yacht Club Saturday gave us wind speed between 5 - 16 knots with regular 90 degree wind shifts against the 10 - 12 knots northerly forecast. The OOD had been tasked with a target of 45 minutes per race - one hour between races and this he managed to maintain. The eventual overall winner Richard Instone with the help of crew Steve Parker proved the simple rule for winning a race - start well - get into the lead - don't let any boats pass you until the finish - this worked for all the races he won. The last race saw the wind lift from 5 to 16 knots and shift so that generally the fleet was over standing the windward mark after rounding the leeward mark. Winning this race left Andi Tunnicliffe of Windemere with Matt Burge of Poole second still in the running after the first day both with four points from their best two races. Sunday gave us 16 - 22 knots northerly against the 7 knots forecast but the glorious sunshine made it seem so much better. Richard Instone cemented his lead with two clear wins as the wind speed saw many local and visiting GPers enjoy the warmer waters and soft mud of Poole harbour - wind shifts and gusts catching them unawares. The final race gave the Burge clan a 1st and 3rd as Matt's father Andy crewed for Colin Rainback in Reflection. We think there was a separate competition between those two.

Ian Sinclair and Alan Jones "swiped" the silver fleet trophy with very consistent finishing al-ways in the top 8. James Ward and Richard Whitehill took bronze again with consistent finishing - always in the top half of the fleet.

Many thanks to our sponsor Piplers of Poole without whose support over the years we would not have been able to host many of our events. No 1 The Pollocks

Chipping Moreoff

Letter to the Editor Greater Albion

Dear Sir

I would like to complain. I feel it necessary to give you a piece of my mind.

I find it descipable hobbirable unplesent to note that

there are indevidules people who wait lurk -

waiting for disaster to strike others. In particular I refer

to the article in this Summers Mainsail showing a poor

unfortunate annnnnomus un named individual on whom tragedy has befallen. See photo. While

attempting to discover the identity of the individual in

the photo I spoke to one indevidules person who said

“ I do not know any red heads with a big bum” I can

not reveal my sources for fear she will divorce him if she finds out what he said.

Another example of this activity is taking pleasure in others misfortune. Following is this prevuusly before

now unpublished picture despicting showing two intrepids battling the elements – lose concentration for a

moment and YES there was the lurker - with a camera. And OH. Did they offer assistance. NO Just sit there

and took bl**dy photographs.

There have been examples of this at other events with even the safety boats getting in on the act (Celia)

A final example of this unfortunate activity is as the attached photo of a boat 3OZVW - I think. The poor

unfortunate obviously inexperienced sailor with his

novice (if a bit cute) crew is floundering in despair. But

does the camera man come to their aid. No. He focuses

on the poor young girls bum. And so does the

photographer.

I hope by this letter I can put an end to this activity.

Maybe your readers can send other examples of this

disgraceful practice.

Yours

Mr Irving Rate

SAILING RESULTS

A full set of the Sailing results are included with this issue.

Our thanks to Ian Wall

SATURDAY AFTERNOON DINGHY SAILING There are discussions among the dinghy fleets about weekend sailing. With the lower

numbers on Sunday mornings (less than a third of the GP fleet) and with frequent Sun-

days where the volunteers outnumber the competitors there have been many moves to

improve attendance over the last few years. This has mainly been in the form of starting

later or finishing earlier in the season.

This has been compounded by the frequent bad weather and not helped by the too many

occasions where I am advised that the race office has cancelled racing "unnecessarily".

This issue I am advise is being dealt with.

My suggestion is that we try substituting Sunday morning racing with Saturday after-

noon racing. This has been put to Sailing Committee and has generally received a posi-

tive reaction. I am confident that we will have Saturday afternoon sailing this time next

year.

My reasons are as follows

Saturday afternoon is generally a time associated with sport while Sunday is associated

with family.

I am advised the sea breeze usually fills in around then.

There would be more heat in the day and in the competitors.

Parkstone seem to have a thriving Saturday afternoon dinghy fleet.

The club is virtually empty on Saturday afternoon.

Cruiser racers like myself would be available to sail.

If you race on Sunday your kit would not be dry for Monday.

Saturday afternoon lends itself better to coaching / taster sessions for new people.

It has been suggested that we could run two short races with a helm and crew series of

races.

Against

There are still people who work Saturdays or mornings who would struggle to get there.

There may be conflict with Parkstone fleets

We would need new volunteers for Saturdays - although the ribs are only required for

dinghies so only a few extra volunteers would be required.

I look forward to any comments and response but I feel that if successful the trial could

be extended with more summer afternoon sailing.

Martin Murphy GP14 Class Captain

SATURDAY VOLUNTEERS

If the club give the go ahead to hold Saturday

Afternoon Racing, we will need extra volunteers.

When the volunteer forms come out please vol-

unteer if you can.

For all your boating needs

The Piplers of Poole annual Round the Is-

lands Team Race event, where boats from

Poole Y.C. compete with Seahorse S.C and

B.T.Y.C. Sailsports from the Welsh

Harp, London, attracted an entry of 21

boats in 7 teams. Fortunately the previous

days winds of force 7 and above subdued

but still forecasted to be breezy. As com-

petitors arrived with the islands covered in

mist and light winds the forecast looked

questionable. At least the sky cleared and

the islands were viewable for the start of

the first race.

Race 1 – With the imminent arrival of the

Barfleur, a course of anti-clockwise round

the islands of Green, Furzey and Brownsea

was chosen. The force 2 south easterly

shifted southerly at the start causing a

crowded pin end and a one sided beat to

Piccadilly mark. Martin Trim (PYC) and guest

crew from the Harp recovered from a poor

start by sailing low of the fleet to pop up in

front but their lead was short lived as the

favourites closed in.

Mike and Margaret Williams (PYC) tempted

the fleet to sail close to Green Island with

inevitable consequences, one being the un-

forgettable sight of the favourite Richard

Lord, parked and sedately climbing from his

boat into knee level water to remove the pin

from his fixed rudder.

This was magic to the passing fleet espe-

cially the Williams’s who now seized the lead

which they held past the castle to the home

stretch. Lord fought back and choosing to

cross the channel uncovered paid dividends

and passed the finish, streets ahead of the

pack that sailed close to the island. Second

place in the two and a half hour race went

to Roger Walton & Serena Counsell (BTYC)

in front of Den Valentine & Serina Thorley

(PYC).

Race 2 – As boats began to launch in bril-

liant sunshine so the breeze leaped up to

force 5 promising some exiting sailing.

This time the same course but clockwise

and a spinnaker start. After a short post-

ponement they were off with the first cap-

size just yards from the line. Richard Lord

and Lorna Davis (Seahorse) enjoying the

conditions soon made the running, gaining a

convincing lead as they passed the cas-

tle. The uncomfortable beat to Nat West

Buoy and then the route round the Islands

saw no change and with Lord now cutting

the corners the rudders again were lifting.

With the club now in sight and a beam wind,

the kites went up and the planning began.

More capsizes but again no change for the

leaders and once round Piccadilly the exhila-

rating, long fast reach to the line became a

perfect climax to the days racing.

Another first for Richard and Lorna but sadly

not the prizes as this is team racing.

Mike Arrow and Ian Aitken from PYC took

second place but the result that clinched the

Trophy, a third for Roger and

Serena (BTYC).

Scoring best overall was Team A from BTYC.

Congratulations to:

13696 - Brian Jeffries and Richard Malden

13980 - Za and Libby Jelliffe,

and 13887 - Roger Walton and Serena

Counsell,

all deserved winners of the Piplers Trophy

for 2008

After Tea and Prizegiving the evening

rounded off with a dinner in the clubhouse

for sixty plus with special guests John and

Catherine Gardner from Piplers of Poole and

some kind words from Za Jelliffe represent-

ing the visitors.

Roll on next year !

A Letter from Dave Thompson ( GP14 Snowey)

Hello from the Sunny Mexican Riviera. As you all know (I hope) I now work for Princess Cruises working on Sapphire and later Crown Princess. Somewhat bigger than the Royal Navy frigates I am used to! So what is it like?

The ship is 115,875 gross tonnage, 50 Me-ters wide, 290 long, 3,400 tonnes fuel, cruise at 20 knots on 2 electrically driven shafts, 3 stern thrusters and 3 bow thrusters means we can go sideways at 2 knots! Crew of 1,200 and 2,600 Passengers. Has 16 decks, 5 swimming pools, countless bars and restaurants and a Gym (yes I do use it).

We have just finished cruising up in Alaska – stunning scenery! And are now based in Los Angeles as our “turn round port”. We sail down to Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta on the Mexican mainland then up to Cabo San Lu-cas before heading back to LA, each cruise is a week long. When I cross over to the Crown I will sail from Port Everglades and cruise the Caribbean on one week cruises.

What do I do? I am the Second Electro Tech-nical Officer (Communications) responsible for (Deep breath), All radars, Integrated bridge display systems (including electronic chart system), all GPS, 2 gyros, all Passen-ger Announcement equipment, computerized digital phone system, all stage equipment, all music systems, GMDSS, U / VHF radio sys-

tems, TV Broadcast equipment (including sta-bilized Satellite TV), Satellite communications and I am sure I have missed a few bits! So a broad spectrum of equipment that keeps us busy, I work for the First ETO with a work force of 4 (2 Pilipino and 1 Indian).

We work every day regardless of where we are and my contract is 12 weeks on 6 weeks off.

I have a double cabin (with windows!), en suite facilities and a full entertainment suite (well I do maintain it so I get a plasma TV!).

As an officer I get to use all the passenger facilities including restaurants and pools, we get to go to the shows and bars too (the latter we do have to pay but get crew discount!).

Tempted? Well come on over it is a good life and interesting and somewhat bigger then a GP – yes I do miss sailing and look forward to sailing again in my weeks off!

Some of the questions I have been asked so far (usually by Americans!) Do these stairs go up as well? What time does the midnight buf-fet start? Why do we have to get off this side today, yesterday it was the other side? Is the tennis court on the sport deck?

Well I hope that has given you an insight to life on a small cruise ship, those of you old enough may remember “Love Boat” a TV se-ries based on a cruise ship in the 70’s and 80’s, that was Princess cruises in the early days.

See you all soon.

Dave Thompson

PS – Hannah has settled in at Aberystwyth University, joined the sailing club and they have GP14s too!
