The Bell January 3, 2016 The Epiphany of the Lord
Mission Statement
We the people of St. Mary
Parish, because of our
baptismal promises and compelled by our Catholic
identity, seek to be an example of
God’s presence by worship, education,
and service to our neighbors
with sensitivity
to those most in need of God’s love.
From the Pastor’s Desk! January 3, 2016
Months ago a new parishioner, Ferdinand Uy, came to me and asked what he could do to become more involved in the parish. He and his wife, Christie and son, Isaiah had been parishioners for a little over a year moving from the North side of Chicago and had looked at many of the neighboring parishes before settling on St. Mary. After a lengthy conversation it was decided that Ferdie would work on beginning a new ‘Welcoming Committee’ here at St. Mary Parish. The goals would be
twofold: to have events to encourage people to get to know one another and to work with our current parish leadership in the art of welcoming new people into an established community. Looking for an event that would get this new ministry started, Ferdie came up with the idea of ‘Milk and Cookies with St. Nick’. Along with that event he would host events to share with different groups and interested parties on how to go about reaching out to the stranger in our midst in a more proactive way to help them feel more welcomed and involved in the different parish ministries. It can be difficult for a stranger to break into a group of people who all seem to know each other. Ferdie would use techniques that he had learned through his work experience and readily adapted to a parish community. He got very busy and reached out to all the parish organizations to be a part of ‘Milk and Cookies with St. Nick’. Some responded most positively and chose to be a part of the event on December 6th, the Feast of St. Nicholas. In looking back on who came to the event there was quite a large number of newcomers at the event since publicity had been sent to all the preschools and grade schools in Riverside. It did turn out to be a welcoming event that introduced non parishioners to our St. Mary Community. Other events will be planned in the coming year and Ferdie will host more workshops to help us be an even more welcoming community. Thank you to Ferdie for taking on such an event and thank you to all those who said ‘yes’ to help in this event for you assisted a newcomer in our community to feel welcomed and included and in the process began a new tradition for our parish. A perfect example of how we build and invite people to be a part of the kingdom!

OUR PART
THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD – JANUARY 10TH
Next week ‘our part’ of the readings, everyone’s part, is to sing this Response:
“O BLESS THE LORD, MY SOUL, O BLESS THE LORD.”
The readings are Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11; Psalm 104:1-4, 24-25, 27-30; Titus 2:11-14; 3:4-7; Luke 3:15-16, 21-22. Reading this scripture before we attend Mass next Sunday will enable us to be more fully prepared to listen to God’s Word and faithfully to sing our part, “O BLESS THE LORD, MY SOUL, O BLESS THE LORD.”
A MEDITATION
O bless the Lord, my soul, O bless the Lord. Spirit as dove comes to this river scene, Showing the Baptist his Holy Reward, Revealing God’s mercy as in a dream. Thinks John, “Is this the One who is to come?” John hears truth, “You are my beloved Son; With you I am well pleased”- the time has come; God’s plan of salvation is now begun. Son to increase, John to decrease and cease, As blessed martyrdom comes to this saint; The way now prepared for the Prince of Peace, John then faces beheading without complaint. After John’s work will the Good News begin, One without sin came to save us from sin. Deacon Bob
