EDITORIAL

This issue tackles a subject close to my heart: climate change. It is imperative for the young generation to finally feel responsible for the future. It is now and collectively that action must be taken, and what better way to get results than by soliciting our teenagers? The art project was a great way to do so. That is why the conference at Saâcy sur Marne displayed all the art the students made. The journalist, Olivier Nouaillas, was available and ready to come to Samuel Beckett, so maybe a project for next year? This is the last issue of this year, we never know what the future may hold, so who knows if the Beckett Voice will still exist next year? Here’s to hoping...It was a tough job but overall I enjoyed being responsible for such a project. I also got to do some writing, mostly in this column, and it was nice to be able to do so.

WORLD NEWS 2A Bottle in the Sea

Tonya had the chance to discover a 132 year-old bottle containing a message on a beach inAustralia, a few months ago! This is the oldest example of a bottle in the sea ever discovered.

Last January, on the beach of Wedge Island in Australia, Tonya Illman, while walking withfriends, notices a bottle half buried in the sand. She picks it up, without suspecting herdiscovery. By removing the sand that has slipped inside, she finds a sheet of wet paper,rolled on itself and attached by a wire. A text is written on it. It’s slightly erased but we canstill read, in German, coordinates and a date. After extensive research on the Internet withher husband, Tonya understands that this bottle was thrown into the sea on June 12, 1886!The captain of a German boat, La Paula, dropped it in the Indian Ocean, in order to study thesea currents.

After this discovery, Tonya was put in contact with German specialists, who continued thesearch in the archives. They found the logbook kept by the captain of this boat, whichconfirms that he dropped a bottle in the ocean on that date. Thousands of bottles werethrown around the world from 1864 to 1933. 663 messages were found, with Tonya'sdiscovery. The bottle traveled 950 kms across the ocean, before ending up on the beach thesame year it was thrown. Then it was covered by sand, which kept it for 132 years.

What climate for tomorrow?

This month we are going to talk about a very important subject, the climate. In fact the Beckettvoice went to a conference that was about the climate of our world and the dangers ahead. We’re

going to try and summarize this conference for you. Moreover, we’ll show you some drawings fromstudents of Samuel Beckett high school on this topic, being part of a project related to the conference.

We must not wait until it’s too late to act, even if it’s locally. Each and everyone of uscan do something about the climate change!

First of all, the conference was at Saâcy sur Marne on Friday, April 6th. It brought together seven local associations that mobilize against the disruption of climate. This meeting was presided by a journalist, Olivier Nouaillas. For a couple of hours, he explained to us the situation of our world nowadays. The assessment isn’t good. We have arrived to a point that the world has to work as one to reverse the situation. If the world keeps acting the same way, our beautiful Earth will be beyond repair and unlivable for the human race.

This conference welcomed seven organizations that are fighting against global warming with for example « Association Terroir » at St Cyr sur Morin that works on the resources of this area. At the beginning of the meeting, they introduced themselves. Then, the journalist started his speech. One of his first words was “we have to think global and act locally”. He said that because he wanted to explain to us that to save the Earth, Each individual has their role to play. After that, he made a first assessment, 2017 was the hottest year since 1880!By the way, 17 from 18 years of the 21st century were the hottest. Today, there is a threshold of irreversibility, if we cross it, there will be no solution to go back and the Earth will not be viable anymore, dying in the near future, at least much sooner than we could think.

WORLD NEWS 4Then, he talked about the acidification of the oceans and its increase, which causes damage to a whole Eco-system. At this speed, in 2050, there may be more than 150 million of climate refugees! That’s why we have to act now to avoid this. Moreover, the overall temperature is always rising, and because of it, the ice melting lets methane out.

After that, we can observe that there are more and more climate catastrophes such as floods and tsunamis nowadays. On top of that, since the beginning of the century, we have lost 30% of bird species, the biodiversity is threatened. We over-consume the resources of the Earth, so much so that the Americans use the resources of five planets and the French three!

We have to react and fast.

Now, we are going to talk about the challenge the world faces. To begin with, we must not reject more than 2900 billion tons of CO2. By 2040, we will have reached the limit. In 2050, we should have reduced from 40 to 70% our pollution. In 2100, we need 0% emission (meaning there must be a perfect balance between the emissions and what the Earth can absorb). The whole world needs to take its responsibility for this goal to be attainable. To put it into place realistically, we can use more renewable energy, help some countries to develop sustainable solutions, reduce the consumption of meat, have less airplanes, more trains, learn the gardening, teach the seasonality (why import some fruit and vegetables all year round instead of consuming what we have each season?). If we act in that direction, we can meet the goals to save the planet, but the change must start now on every level, global and local. Once the irreversibility threshold has been met, it will truly be too late and the big companies won’t make it better by paying a pollution tax! Think about it!

Make up has been around for centuries. Every year, a new makeup trend is discovered and appreciated throughout the world. Women from different countries around the world are eager to improve their beauty knowledge and try the newest techniques to create unique, appealing looks.Makeup is appreciated differently all around the world and the majority of countries have set their own trend. Here is a quick review of the makeup trends prevailing in seven different countries.

Japan – Doll Face

Having rosy blush high up on the cheeks has become a big trend around Japan. The doll face look is a flush of pink under the eyes that makes the face look softer, younger, and rounder. Japanese beauty trends are seen as eccentric as women love wearing colored contacts and thick fake eyelashes on a daily basis.

Korea – Glow

Blushed cheeks and hydrated skin fits the Korean aesthetics. Korean females prefer applying lightweight BB and CC creams with blushes that provide them a flushed look. On top of that, they like using hydrating mists or water skin finishers that give their skin a glowing and shiny finish.

France – Highlight

French women are embracing highlighting rather than contouring. They prefer to accentuate parts of their face rather than shading them. French makeup artists say that a highlighter should be applied to the areas of the face where the light hits directly.

United Kingdom and Dubai – Bold Brows

Eyebrows have been an obsession in the past. The two regions that love this trend are the UK and Dubai. While the females in the UK prefer their brows to be lush and arched, the women of Dubai like theirs to be flat.

Brazil – Lower Lash Liner

Brazilian women are gifted with thick, dark upper lash lines so they try to give the same effect on their lower lash line by giving it definition. They usually use waterproof mascara or pencil liners, which is applied and blended with a brush on the lower lash line.

Latin America – Color Pop

Women in Latin America like to add a pop of color under their eyes. They use bright colors such as blue and pink to enhance their lower lash line.

India – Color Play

Indian women love experimenting with color play on their eyelids. If they are applying pastel colors, they choose to accentuate it with strong contrasting eyeliner. The colors of the eyeliners range from electric blue to magenta pink and shocking green.Every country has different trends that they follow, but it does not mean they do not embrace the others. Makeup is something everyone should have fun with because it follows no defined rules.

Woodley plays Hazel Grace Landcaster, a sixteen-year-old cancer patient who is forced by her parents to attend a support group, There, she meets and subsequently falls in love with Augustus Waters, another cancer patient, played by Elgort...

This movie is really recommended to people who like love stories. Maybe this story will end well, or not?

Will Smith plays in this movie, and it is two hours and 3 minutes long. If you are a freaking romantic, go on, you will cry your eyes out, I swear it!

NBANational Basketball Association

The NBA is an American-Canadian sports franchise of basketball. It was created on June 6th, 1946. First named BAA (Basketball Association of America), this league was renamed NBA in 1949 after its merger with the NBL (National Basket League). It’s one of four major professional sports leagues in the US, alongside the NFL (American football), MLB (baseball) and NHL (ice hockey).

The NBA was founded in 1946. After its beginnings in the postwar period, the NBA saw its popularity grow in the 1960s, marked by competition between two dominant teams: the Lakers and the Celtics. The league is gradually gaining international recognition, welcoming non-American players and enjoying the popularity of star players like Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and especially Michael Jordan, considered one of the greatest sportsmen of all times.

The championship includes 30 franchises, divided into two Conferences (East and West), each including three divisions. After a regular season starting in October with 82 games, the top eight teams in each conference compete in the playoffs. The Finals oppose the best team of the Eastern Conference against the one of the Western Conference. The team that manages to win four games first is named NBA Champion.

The All-Star Weekend

In February, the season ends for a weekend. It is the NBA All-Star Weekend, which is an event bringing the best players of the current season together and the opportunity to focus on the show. The highlight of this weekend is obviously the All-Star Game, which sees the best players from the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference play. The five major players are chosen by vote of fans around the world (who can vote on the Internet), while the seven reservists are selected by the coaches of the league. These teams are led by the coaches of the teams with the highest winning percentage in each conference a few days before the All-Star Weekend. The same coach cannot perform this function for two consecutive years.

Awards

The team that wins the first four games in the NBA Finals is named champion, and wins the Larry O'Brien Trophy. The Boston Celtics dominate the classification of championship teams with seventeen titles; however, these were mostly won in the 1950s and 1960s, when the league had fewer franchises. This same team holds the record of consecutive victories, with eight titles obtained between 1958 and 1966.

With sixteen titles, the Los Angeles Lakers are the second most successful team. Historical rivals of the Boston Celtics, which they faced twelve times in the finals, the Lakers are the only team to have won at least one title in each decade, with the exception of the 1960s and the 2010s. Third in the classification, the Chicago Bulls have won six titles in as many appearances in the finals.

For three years now, the NBA finals have been played between the Golden States Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers.The Larry O’Brien trophy.

The creation of the WNBA was officially approved by the NBA on April 24th, 1996. Although the WNBA is historically not the first professional women's basketball competition in the United States, it has the advantage of having the support of the NBA, the major North American basketball league.

The league was on fire for its first season in 1997, in the wake of the victory of the US women's team at the 1996 Olympic Games. The league then consisted of 8 teams, each team being located in a city already having a NBA franchise, the name and the colors of the franchise evoking most of the time its male counterpart (the Utah Starzz with the Jazz of Utah ...)

For our last article, we will present two traditional dishes from Romania, and we will present the Romanian culture.

Number one: Cabbage rolls/Sarmale

Servings: 6-10

Ingredients:1 large soured cabbage or one large cabbage and sour kraut (borsch)750g of ground meat (a mixture of pork and beef is recommended)4 large onions2 tablespoons of rice3 tablespoons of lard 5-6 tomatoes or 1 tablespoon of tomato saucesalt peppersour creamDill (aneth)

Step 1First of all, chop the onion and sauté it with the oil, just enough until the onion is translucent. Add the rice to the onion and cook it together for a minute or so. In a large bowl, add the ground pork, dill, onion, rice, and salt and pepper.

Step 2 Cut the cabbage with a sharp thin knife. Carefully remove the cabbage leaves, one by one, so that they do not tear. Cut larger leaves in 2 or 3 and then place meat in each cabbage piece and roll in (use about 1 to 2 tablespoons of the meat mixture in each roll).

Step 3The smaller the rolls are, the tastier they are. Place a layer of rolls in the pan (take a deep one), then cover with a layer of chopped cabbage, then a layer of thinly sliced tomatoes. Do this layering until all the rolls are made. The last layer must be tomato slices or add tomato sauce. Add a tablespoon of lard, pour the borsch and let simmer for 30 minutes. Then place in the oven so that the liquid is reduced. Serve with sour cream.

Number 2: Walnut Sweet Bread / Cozonaci cu nuca

Ingredients:For the dough - 1 kg flour - 300 g sugar - 500 ml milk - 6 egg yolks - 50 g yeast, 200 g butter - 2 tablespoons oil - vanilla stick - salt

For the filling: - 300 g ground walnuts - 3/4 cup sugar - the egg whites - 1/4 cup rum/vanilla - 3 tablespoons cocoa

Step1:Start from yeast and a teaspoon of sugar. Mix until it’s the consistency of sour cream, add 2-3

tablespoons of milk, a little flour and mix well; sprinkle some flour on top, cover and let it sit in a warm place to rise.

Step 2:Boil the milk with the vanilla stick (cut in very small pieces) and leave it on the side, covered, to

keep warm.Mix the yolks with the sugar and salt, then slowly pour the milk, stirring continuously. Place the risen mix in a large bowl and pour, stirring continuously, the yolk-milk mixture and some flour, a little at a time.

Step 3:When you finish this step, start kneading (pétrir). Knead, adding melted butter combined with

oil, a little at a time, until the dough starts to easily come off your palms. Cover with a cloth and then something thicker (like a blanket). Leave in a warm place to triple in volume. If during kneading the dough seems too hard, you may add a little milk. If, on the contrary, the dough seems too soft, you may add a little flour.

Step 4:Mix the sugar with the egg whites and stir until they turn into marshmallow. Add the walnuts

and the cocoa and keep stirring. After the filling has thickened add rum. Roll a sheet of dough about one finger thick, uniformely spread the walnut filling on top and roll like a jelly roll. Grease a bread pan, place the roll inside, let rise for a while. Wash with egg and bake at medium heat. Take out of the pan as soon as it is done, place on a cloth and let cool.

FOOD CORNER 19So, these two dishes are eaten during great opportunities like Christmas in Romania. They are very traditional, and the Romanian gastronomy is like other European countries!Today, we will present a short story about Cozonaci cu nuca, because we think that it is more fun to learn more about this recipe than just read a text!

December 24th, 1994Irena was waiting for her father. She looked out the window, hoping to see him.

Her mother called her from the kitchen:

“Irena, come here! I need your help!” “Yes, mama!, screamed the little girl, sad.” 

Nikoletta had lost her husband during the revolution of December 1989. That day, the dictator Nicolae Ceausescu and his wife had been killed by rebels. Razvan had been killed that cold night, because of the riots (émeutes).

December 25th, 1989It was in December, and Irena was still a little child. She had prepared the traditional “cozonaci cu nuca”, the family dessert. Irena was so happy, because she wanted to make this cake for her father, for Christmas… But the cake wasn’t eaten. A military came to Nikoletta to tell her the bad news. The woman fell on the ground, crying and screaming her husband’s name. She didn’t want to believe this man, she didn’t want to believe than Razvan was dead. So, she asked how her husband was killed. “He was killed by a rebel. It was a mistake. I’m sorry, madam.” Irena was in her bedroom. She had finished the cake, and she was preparing a gift for her father. However, when she heard the door slam, and her mother’s sobs (sanglots), Irena ran down the stairs to know what was happening. She saw Nikoletta, on the ground, crying.

“Why are you crying, mama?” asked the little girl, sad. 

Nikoletta stopped crying, she got up and looked at her daughter with desperate eyes:

“Your father is… Gone. He’ll never come back home…” “Why? Papa must eat my cake! He…”

The little blond girl burst into tears. That Christmas, one family didn’t celebrate Christmas.

Since that day, Irena made this cake–thinking about her father– and, each Christmas, the little girl and Nikoletta didn’t eat this dessert.

Until that day. Until that night. Until that Christmas. Five years had passed since this tragic night when this family had been broken. But that Christmas 1994, a man came to the house. He was very tired, sad and… Nostalgic? Nikoletta opened the door and, when she saw the man, her eyes were devastated. It looked as if she were seeing a ghost. A lovely ghost.

Lily of the Valley

The most beautiful day of his life was the day the love of his life told him that his love wasreciprocal.

Everything started on the first day of May, Jack was walking slowly in the street. The rainstormwas soaking everything. Jack loved the rain, he was certainly the only one in his town who lovedthe rain, people were running away from the rain drops as if it were some kind of danger. So Jack was left alone in the middle of the street, enjoying this moment, taking his time. He wasgoing to his high school because it was the day of the Spring Dance.

Actually he didn’t enjoy dancing that much but he was coming especially for someone. He knewthat this dance was certainly his only way to confess his feelings before the summer break. Thesummer break was synonym of the end of high school and of their lives together. And to Jack,this was the worst thing that could happen to him, seeing his first love walk away from him. Thatis why he had decided to tell him everything before the end of the year.

The way from his house to school wasn’t that long but Jack was so stressed out that he couldn’thelp but walk as slowly as possible.

The dance was starting at nine o’clock, that meant it had started thirty minutes ago already. Jackwas late and his friends were calling and texting him every second to make sure he was coming.The answer was yes. Jack was coming but would he talk?

Five minutes of self-doubting later, he was close to his school. He could hear the very loud musicfrom far away but he hadn’t paid attention to it before. In the courtyard, his friend Amy waswaiting for him. She was the only one who knew what he was going to do.

Seeing her smile kindly at him gave him strength and bravery. It was as if all of his doubts werefading away and all of his fears too.

“Jack!”

Amy was now next to him. Her look was uncertain as if she was making sure he was okay beforespeaking more.

“You-Know-Who is inside.”

Jack nodded, smiled at her and started towards the gymnasium but Amy stopped him.

“Jack... He’s not alone.”

Her smile turned into a worried face. Jack was even more stressed out now but he knew it.Someone like him couldn’t go to a school dance alone. It would have been bad for his reputation.

FICTION OF THE MONTH 21“Amy.” he tried to sound confident but his voice was too high-pitched. “I’m okay. I have to do itanyway. I know that even though he doesn’t see me the same way I do he will not hurt me orsomething. We have known each other since first grade, he’s not a bad person.”

Amy smiled and let go of his arm.

“Let’s go then. Good luck Jack, I’ll stay here.”

As soon as Jack was inside, he saw him. Everyone could see him because he was literally thecenter of attention. He was dancing, laughing, talking. Everyone could agree that Peter Brookswas in his right element with all of these people. Jack waited almost an hour for Peter to bealone. When the guy finally was, he ran to him. His heart was beating faster than ever.

“PETER!” he yelled, making sure Peter had heard him.

Peter turned and saw him. He smiled and Jack smiled too, his heart skipping a beat.

“Jack! Long time no see bro’ how you doin’?”

Bro’… This brought Jack back to reality. For Peter he was simply a friend. At least for now. Jackknew that as soon as he would confess, their friendship would be over.

“Peter, I need to talk to you before I go.”

“Sure, let’s go outside. Is everything okay?” Peter sounded worried.

“Yes it’s just… You’ll see.” Jack smiled.

Once they were outside and that Jack had made sure no one was close enough to hear what theywere saying, he took a deep breath and started speaking.

“You remember when I came out?”

“Yes, I also remember you told me you liked someone!” Peter winked.

“Well, I lied. I don’t like someone. Actually I’m in love with them. For so long by the way but Iknow they only see me as a good friend. I don’t know what to do, I wanted to confess and try but,is it worth it?” Jack stopped talking. His fears had just come back to him and right now, with Peterin front of him he thought it was a bad idea.

“Jake”

Jack, whose head was down, looked up in Peter’s eyes after hearing the nickname Peter gave himwhen they were children.

FICTION OF THE MONTH 22“You can never be sure of something. The best way to be is to go straight to the one you love andto tell them your feelings, your fears and your love. Their reaction can’t be bad because it willcome from you. Do it before something stops you.”

With a spark of bravery, Jack took Peter’s cheeks in his hands and slowly kissed him. Realizingwhat he’d done, Jack blushed and stepped back, looking at the ground and apologizing.

“W-What...”

“I know. You don’t love me and all. I know that, Peter, but I needed to do it because I couldn’texplain myself with words. Since the day we’ve met I’ve always seen you as someone wonderfulwith only qualities. I’ve always admired you and in some way, I've always loved you. I tried not totell you because I was afraid that you could end our friendship and never talk to me again but Iknow I can’t live properly if I stay like this. It’s just too hard to see you everyday and to keep asecret like this. When I came out as gay actually I just wanted to tell you my feelings but Icouldn’t. Now I do, and I will respect your opinion and your decision after that.”

Jack stopped talking again, catching his breath. He had done it, he had confessed to Peter andeven kissed him!

Peter stayed silent and Jack immediately started to regret his audacity. Maybe he should havesaid nothing.

Minutes went by and Peter didn’t move or talk. He was like a beautiful statue in a garden.

“I might just leave and leave you alone Pet’. I’m sorry if I troubled you, I didn’t mean to. Goodbye.”

Jack turned, his heart broken. He thought he was ready for a situation like this but he was not andthe tears that he was holding back were saying the same. He started walking home, wanting toavoid everyone when a hand took his arm.

“I don’t want to ta-...”

Someone cut him off by kissing him... Kissing him? Jack pushed the mysterious someone awayand was ready to yell when he recognized him.

Peter.

He smiled shyly at Jack and after some seconds, they kissed again.Maybe it was faith but as soon as they stopped kissing and looked at the sky, they saw a lily of thevalley bouquet standing above their heads, hanging from the high-school gate.

That was the happiest and most beautiful day ever for both of them. Their love was mutual.

HOW TO DRAW LIKE YOUR FAVORITE MANGAKA

WARNING! We are not professionals, we are just giving you some advice as amateurs.

Now that you know everything about mangas, it’s your turn to become a mangaka! This month, learn how to draw a face, body, and how to color your

drawing!

The face Step 1 - Start to draw a circle, it doesn’t need to be perfect because you will erase it after.

Step 2 - Then, draw the lines that will be the cheek bones. And connect them into a kind of triangle that will be the chin.

Step 3 - Then, you can erase the line of the circle in the middle of the face. Draw a cross that will help you place the eyes, nose and mouth.

When you do the eyes, it’s important that you can draw a third eye between both eyes. It enables you to keep good proportions.

Here are some ideas of different eyes, noses and mouths!

Step 5 -The haircut. The rest of the circle is the skull of your character; so you have to draw the hair just a little bit higher. The haircut depends on your taste.

Eyebrows : it gives to your character his/her expression, so it’s really important.

The tip of your eyebrow has to begin at the extremity of the eye next to the other extremity of your eye.

There are different kinds of noses, choose and use your favorite. (look at the previous pictures)

For the mouth, it’s not difficult, you can refer to the picture. Don’t put the mouth down too much because your character won’t have a chin, poor thing!

Step 4 - Now, the neck. The size depends if you want to draw a man or a woman. It will be bigger for a man. Don’t forget the Adam’s apple when you draw a guy. Details are important because it makes your drawing realistic.

Here are some ideas of different haircuts!

Step 6 – Ink your drawing! You can use a special pen which is used to ink drawings. You can find it in shops like Cultura for example.

Step 3 - To finish, add brightness around the «light spot» with a clearer and opaque color like white. Add some brightness in the hair to do some light reflection. You can use a Tippex as well. It’s the detail which makes all the difference.

When a drawing is inked it makes all the difference! Erase your pencil line.

Time to color!

The coloration

Step 1 - First, color with the colors of your choice, the skin, the eyes, the hair and the clothes if there are any.

Step 2 - Create a «light spot». Then, color in a deeper color the shadows on the opposite side of your «light spot».

Our advice for amateurs : Begin by copying some drawings, it will help you and bit by bit try to draw without any models! The hands are really difficult so watch some videos on YouTube in order to help you. Try to improve your own style, you can mix different styles to create one. The body is also hard to draw, you have to be careful with the proportions, once you did it well you did the most difficult.Draw again and again it’s the best way to improve yourself in drawings!

For the profile and the 3/4 view begin with a circle as usual. For the 3/4 view align the eyes and the eyebrows but a side will be shorter than the other, the nose and the mouth aren’t in the middle. Here is a vague idea.

Drawing a body isn’t easy, think about proportions. For a woman we put a vague example with the proportions. But it is almost the same for a man, except that he will be more muscled and he won’t have boobs. Begin by drawing the head and then build the body with a rough draft line.
