A former funeral home operator and pastorat Bela-Bela, along with his son, left thecourt as free men after charges against themwere provisionally dismissed. Both cases against Christo Stander (56), as

well as the case against his son Johan (25),were provisionally struck from the roll. The Standers appeared in the Bela-Bela

Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 29 January. The men were arrested at the end of 2015on charges relating to the alleged theft oftwo computers and a microwave oven fromBafa Funeral Services.Christo was also accused of fraud. The

complainant in this case, Malose HermanusMabote, a resident at Settlers, previouslyalleged that Christo had pretended that hewas operating a legal funeral scheme onBafa’s behalf. Mabote invested a sum ofroughly R16 500 in the scheme. He allegesthat the scheme was illegal and that themoney he invested was spent for personal

profit. The cases were previously postponed after

the defense said that they needed access tothe police files, after which petitions wouldbe submitted and the senior prosecutorwould then decide whether there is merit forprosecution.

According to Louis Tottleben, theStanders’ lawyer, the police investigationhas not been completed and is still ongoing. However, it was decided that the casesagainst the Standers would be temporarilywithdrawn while the prosecutor decideswhether the cases would continue.

Christo Stander was involved with BafaFuneral Services at Bela-Bela and wasdismissed last year after an internalinvestigation.

He is once again working as a funeraldirector at Bela-Bela. Bafa FuneralServices was bought by the Botswana-based funeral services group BFSG.

He is also serving as pastor at the AGS ElShaddai Church in Luna Road.

He spoke to The BEAT’s sister newspaperDie Pos about the situation. He said that hefeels that his reputation has taken seriousdamage from the case, and is concernedthat it may become difficult to find work.

“We’re surviving, but this situation hascaused a lot of damage to my reputationand I’m having trouble finding work,” hesaid.

He mentioned that he has an excellentrelationship with his community, andthanked them for their support.

A survivor of nyaope addiction spoke to TheBEAT recently, warning them of the dangersand consequences of using the drug.19-year old Abel Hlungwane of Bela-Bela

told The BEAT that after he survived hisaddiction, he never wants anyone else to sufferwhat he had suffered. He said that heexperienced unbearable pain and emotionaltrauma following his use and abuse of the drug, and hurt his friends and family by his actions. His mother said that she had not suspected

anything at first. She said that her son wouldalways ask for money nicely, claiming to needit for harmless things. She said that soon she noticed a change in his

behavior. When she asked his friends, they saidthat he was using nyaope. He started beingnoisy and rude, and making promises that hecould not keep.“He kept denying it even after I told him that

I had confirmation from different people. I thensought help from professionals. He told me thathe was only smoking dagga, which obviouslymany people use to keep healthy,” she said. “Iapproached social workers about the problemand they told me that he should make the

decision to quit himself and get rehabilitated. Ithen resorted to some medication which I hadheard about. People said that it replaced thecravings and our doctor even called him in forcounselling, but he still couldn’t quit.”Apparently Abel became very ill over

December, and was hospitalized. His legbecame swollen and he complained of seriouspain.X-ray tests revealed that there was damage

to his leg. His heart was apparently swollen, and he was referred to the provincialhospital in Polokwane.Abel’s mother said that the hospital

drained a large amount of pus from his leg.“I went through hell and I have learned my

lesson. I can assure my family that I havequit and I am never going back to thatagain. Anyone who lets himself be luredinto using this drug has no idea what theyare getting themselves into. I am speakingfrom experience,” he said. “Please, quitwhile you are ahead. No good can come ofthat!”

Meanwhile, police in Modimolle haveannounced that they are facingincreasing instances of theft near bankbranches and Auto Teller Machines(ATM).

“The community must please be veryaware of their surroundings whendrawing cash at the ATM’s. Often thereare two or three people standing aroundat the ATM’s. One of them will drawyour attention away from the machineswhile the others get the informationneeded, and in a few minutes you willsee there is a withdrawal of money fromyour account. Do not let anyone assistyou at the ATM’s except for bankpersonnel. We have had a few caseswhere people have been done in likethis,” he said.

Modimolle up in armsover new policy

Mzamane Ringane

People who owe water, refuse and sewerage accounts are likely to face the wrathof Modimolle Local Municipality. Photo: Mzamane Ringane

The Modimolle Local Municipality hasput in place a new system to persuadelocal residents to pay their accounts ontime and in full.In a bid to ensure that unpaid accountsare resolved, the municipality hasintroduced a system where the meternumbers of account holders with unpaiddebt are blocked.

The new arrangement makes itimpossible for an account holder topurchase electricity until they have paidtheir outstanding water, refuse andsewerage accounts. The municipality has notified residentsby posting leaflets on all entry points attheir municipal premises.Residents recently took to socialnetworks to express their frustrations asa result of this new arrangement.

One member of the community, who didnot want to divulge her name, said thatshe felt that it would have been better toshut off the water when consumers fail topay their accounts, instead of denyingresidents access to both water andelectricity.

“I feel that our rights are beingviolated. Why deny us access toelectricity when we only owe rent? Weuse prepaid electricity, so it is unfair tocombine the two accounts,” she said.

The BEAT spoke to ModimolleDevelopment and Unemployment Forumchairperson Hendrick Malatji on

Monday, 8 February. Malatji said thatthis new system is not fair to thecommunity of Modimolle, especiallythose who are unemployed or survivingon grants.

He said many residents who qualify asindigents were not given that privilege, adding that the municipality has delayedthe process of capturing the applications.“It is not our fault that we find ourselvesowing the municipality so much money.People have been applying as indigentssince 2013, but the municipality onlystarted capturing the applications in 2015.The municipality has failed us. Theyshould have called a meeting withresidents and attempt to find a solutionbefore they can even think ofimplementing this new system,” saidMalatji.

Malatji also cited the poor condition ofwater in Modimolle as another reasonwhy residents have decided to stoppaying their rent.

He said the only way to find an amicablesolution is for the municipality to come tothe people and listen to their complaints.

“The condition of water in the area isnot up to standard and they expect us topay for it,” Malatji concluded. The BEAT contacted Modimolle LocalMunicipality spokesperson Patrick Shika, who said he was on study leave andreferred all queries to the office of theMunicipal Manager. At the time of going to press the office ofthe Municipal Manager could not bereached for comment.

Former mayor encourages honestyand reliability in leadership

Former Bela-Bela Mayor councillorHenrietta Ledwaba spent her 55th birthdayencouraging honesty and reliabilityamongst her fellow leaders in the area. Her address follows the weekly

disruptions that have been taking place atthe ANC’s Branch General Meetings(BGMs) in various wards of Bela-Bela.Leaders are alleged to be causing havoc inorder for the meetings not to take place sothat they can remain in leadershippositions. They have allegedly called ingroups of young people and bouncers todisrupt the meetings were they feelthreatened by their opponents so thatproceedings would stop.

Ledwaba said that a good leader knowwhen it is time to step down and let otherstake over. She spoke of the time when shewas mayor and the challenges andhighlights that she encountered during thetime. She added that she accepted that herterm was over and stepped down butcontinued working for the party as usualbecause the ANC belongs to everyone inthe country and not a specific group ofpeople. She further emphasized that every

person needs spiritual and emotionalguidance and one should engage therelevant people when the time comes, such as turning to God for every plan. She added greediness and gangsterismpractices will never make people respectyou as a leader and a leader involves herpeople in her activities.Ledwaba was also celebrating her

victory and the support of her followerson the day, saying that the public mustwait for the main celebratory event, where everybody will be invited to sharewith all the candidates that emergedvictorious in the BGMs. The event isexpected to take place at the new Bela-Bela Stadium once it has officially beenopened.

A seriously ill man was allegedly turnedaway from the Bela-Bela Hospital afterhe was apparently told that he could notbe helped at their operating theaters.Willie van Rensburg (59) told The

BEAT that he visited the public hospitalon Wednesday, 3 February for the lasttime.“I have been suffering with a big gout

problem for more than a year now. Thehospital has never done a properinvestigation into this and they only giveme Tramazac medication every time I gothere. I waited for hours before I washelped even though I had been thereearly. When I was eventually helped, they

had been given pills each time he visitedthe hospital instead of being scheduledfor an operation. He said that one of thedoctors told him that most of thehospital’s finances are spent on vehiclesand that the theatres have all beeninoperable for months. The pensioner, who resides at the

Exodus centre, said that he and his wifehave no money and that they rely onVolkshulp and contributions from thecommunity.“I have immense pain and hoped the

Residents demandanswers about allegedpipe sabotage

A resident of the newly-establishedExtension 9 at Bela-Bela approached TheBEAT with concerns regarding leakingpipes in the area, a problem that hasapparently been going on for over a week.

When The BEAT visited the area onSunday, 7 February, the situation was stillunchanged.

According to local residents, people whoown cattle in that area have allegedly cutthe pipes supplying water to households fortheir cattle to drink.

This causes concern and aggravation to

the neighbours, who are left with low waterpressure to their homes and streams of waterflooding the area. The residents said that thecows arrive at a specific time to drink theleaking water from the pipes before theirherder takes them back.

The residents said that they have alertedthe municipality several times about theproblem but no progress has been made. One of the residents said that they calledthe municipality’s Technical Servicesmanager, Jimmy Moloto, to inform himabout the matter, but no results have beenforthcoming.

Moloto and the owners of the cattle couldnot be reached for comment in the matter.

end of the month.”Sello Kwakwa, another resident, said that

it is surprising that, since the building wassaid to have failed the buildingrequirements, no one from the Departmentof Health has followed up on the situation.

“Our community is growing but they donot seem to care, because they are not
