Corporate Communion:

Centerpiece of Knight Life Our Knighthood within the All Saints Catholic

Community is about living the Life of Christ by word

and example, fueled by our common connection to

the Sanctifying Grace emanating from the

Sacrament of Reconciliation and by our sharing in

the Life of Christ through our Knights of Columbus

Corporate Communion – the centerpiece of Knight

Life.

What makes our Lumen Christi Council #13520

unapologetic commitment to the core teaching and

GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGE

Brother Knights,

On August 12, 1852 the founder of our order, Fr. Michael J. McGivney was born. We

marked his birthday this month with our Corporate Communion on Saturday, August 13th.

One Hundred thirty four years ago, our order began because a young priest saw a need for

the people he served and decided to do something about it. In the basement of St. Mary’s

Church in New Haven, Connecticut the Knights of Columbus was born and today we are

more than 1,800,000 members strong and growing. Happy Birthday, Fr. Michael.

Today, we continue the dream of Fr. McGivney to serve the needs of our parish and our

community.

This month we held a pancake breakfast on the 14th. The placemats for this month’s pancake breakfast mark the 40th

Anniversary of our parish.

Last week we participated in a blood drive. Later this week we will provide a luncheon for the families of veterans who are

being treated at the VA Hospital in Dallas.

Our parish Fall Festival is coming up in September. We will be joining the other major parish organizations in selling tickets for

the Fall Festival after Masses on September 3rd and 4th. Take a few minutes after Mass to help out. Look for Fall Fest Ticket

Sales on the signup sheet at our business meeting.

We will be selling Tamales at the Fall Festival. We will be looking for volunteers to man our booth on Saturday and Sunday.

Join in the fun. Sign up to help out.

We are off to a good start. Thank you for all you do.

Michael Greene, GK, PFN

Monthly Recognitions Our Knight of the month for July is a “Go To” guy when you need help. You will find him working at most of our

monthly pancake breakfasts. That is just one of the many council activities that he regularly participates.

During the June Pancake Breakfast we discovered that one of the ovens

was broken and not reparable. I asked Ed to check out what it would take

to replace the ovens. He jumped on it and had information about

replacement equipment to Darrell Flowers by Tuesday morning. This

month’s Knight of the month is Ed Munno.

The Family of the month is actively involved both the Ladies Auxiliary and the Council. In July

we were asked to help out with the VBS Closing Dinner. This family helped to setup the serving

line and serve the families who attended the closing dinner. The family of the month for July is

Ann and Jeff Stuart.

Corporate Communion: Centerpiece of Knight Life - continued from page 1 -

coincidence? Without a doubt, Fr. McGivney would have been a proud witness to all the knights, spouses and ladies auxiliary who

served and contributed to this memorable liturgy and fellowship which immediately followed.

Brother Knights, can it get any better than this? Yes, it can. But only with you. Article submitted by Frank Coy; pictures taken by Jerry Cayce. More pictures can be found in the picture gallery section on our website (www.lumenchristikc,org)

New Ovens

The ovens we use on a regular basis gave up the ghost after 30 plus years of use by the numerous

ministries here at All Saints. The Lumen Christi Council joined by the All Saints Women’s

Organization and the All Saints Men’s Club provided the funds to purchase new ovens which were

in operation in time for your August Pancake Breakfast. Thanks to Ed Munno and Stan Tax who

worked to get best pricing information to Darrell Flowers, facilities manager at All Saints, who

ordered and arranged for installation of the new ovens. -article and picture submitted by Mike Greene

Coffee and Donuts Still a Big Hit Sunday Morning Fellowship (AKA Coffee and Donut Sunday) continues to be a

big hit with Parishioners. The Coffee & Donuts Team serves between 200 and

300 cups of coffee, 3-4 gallons of orange and lemonade juice mix, and between

80 and 140 dozen donut holes each week. Quantities vary with the weather,

the school year, and special events; and the Team takes a few holidays like

Mothers’ Day, Father’s Day, Palm and Easter Sunday, and close to Christmas

and New Year’s Day. The All Saints Jazz Band puts in frequent appearances

during the school year providing music and vocalists.

The Team sets up the hall with tables and chairs, serving and condiment tables.

Eight varieties of coffee creamers are also provided. Although coffee and donuts are provided free, donations are accepted.

The Team consists of Knights: Rommel Almagro, Pat Heaney, Michael Riley, Don Shaver and Jeff Stuart who are supplemented by

other Knights who fill in for occasional duty before or after the Mass they attend. -article submitted by Jeff Stuart; picture taken by Mike Greene

Pancake Breakfast Team Back in the Saddle Again Our Lumen Christi Council Pancake Breakfast was back again on

Sunday, August 14 and as usual, it proved to be a successful start for

our new fraternal year. Total served was 157 which was pretty good

considering the school year has not begun. Once again, Stan Tax came

up with a couple of good casseroles and the French toast was

especially popular. This is such a great event and really brings the

parish families together for some good food, good fellowship, and an

opportunity for the Knights to highlight our contribution to the

success of the parish.

Thanks are due to the many members who help make this monthly

event a continued success. This is a great way for our new members

to get indoctrinated into the “Knight Life” at All Saints. Contact Jack

Falloure for additional information.

Fisher House Luncheon On Thursday, August 25, Lumen Christi Council will provide lunch to the guests and staff of Fisher House. This quarterly council event

entails some food prep prior to the actual date and then meeting to car pool to the Fisher House to put the meal together including

salad and dessert at their facilities.

If you have not gone to Fisher House yet, please join us the next time. The Fisher House is located next to the VA Hospital in Dallas

and enables family members of veterans to be close to a loved one at the most stressful time - during their hospitalization for a

combat injury, illness or disease. There is no charge for veterans or their families to stay at the Fisher House.

This is another activity where new Knights who are available on weekdays can jump in and get acclimated to the “Knight Life” very

easily.

Family Activity Successful Following the quarterly corporate communion, a group of Knights and

their families headed over to Spring Creek BBQ to help celebrate the

birthday of the Venerable Fr. Michael J. McGivney as well as round

out an evening of family activity for the council. Pictures can be found

Seminary / Seminarian Profile

The Redemptoris Mater Seminary of the Diocese of Dallas was born on the feast of the Immaculate Conception December 8, 2004 after the signing of the Decree of erection by the then Bishop of Dallas, Bishop Charles V. Grahmann in the Cathedral Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe. In its first days, the seminary was located at Immaculate Conception Church, Grand Prairie, Texas until a more permanent location could be found. After two years, the seminary moved into its current location on the campus of the sisters of Our Lady of Charity on Cockrell Hill Road. It is one of 105 Redemptoris Mater Seminaries worldwide

which are founded on four fundamental precepts: the Neocatechumenal Way, they are diocesan (governed according to the present norms for the formation and incardination of the diocesan clergy), they are missionary (upon ordination, the priests are available to go wherever the ordinary sends them) and they are international (with vocations coming from different nations). In the eleven years, five priests and one deacon have been ordained for the Diocese of Dallas, and all are currently serving the Diocese of Dallas in different capacities (see last paragraph for additional details).

Lumen Christi Council was introduced to this Dallas seminary in 2006 when then Grand Knight Chris Diaz encouraged the council to take advantage of the Knights of Columbus Refund Support Vocations Program (RSVP) where councils “adopt” one or more seminarians or postulants and provide them with financial assistance and moral support. Since all of the Holy Trinity Seminarians already had at least one sponsoring entity, it was decided to put our efforts into those without support. The first two seminarians the council

supported were Michal Markiewicz and Tymoteusz (Tymo) Ksiazkiewicz, both originally from Poland. The following year the council added support for a third Seminarian from Redemptoris Mater, Samuel Martinez, who is originally from Spain. They are all Third Degree members of our council and are on schedule to be ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Dallas in 2018, 2019 and 2020 respectively. Each will be profiled separately in upcoming editions of THE BEACON.

Through the years of our association with Redemptoris Mater Seminary we have watched the Seminary and the Seminarians grow. Our council members met Michal and Tymo at our first Clergy Appreciation dinner on March 29, 2007. Seminarians from Redemptoris Mater were the acolytes for the first Diocesan-wide Knights of Columbus Corporate Communion in March of 2009 and for each Corporate Communion at the Cathedral Basilica of the Virgin of Guadalupe since. Following each event they joined us at El Fenix for a mid-day meal.

In June of 2008 we started what is now a Lumen Christi Council tradition, we spend time interacting with these young men from around the world who are studying Philosophy and Theology while discerning God’s will. This event usually sparks keen interest from the members of our council and more than forty members have made the short road trip to Cockrell Hill over the years. Those who were making the trip for the first time took a short tour of the facility. The seminarians like to show off their “home” and all of the “little projects” they have completed, enforcing the sense of community this group emanates. The group then assembles in the chapel for Vespers, also called Evening Prayer, a part of the Liturgy of the Hours. Evening Prayer gives thanks for the day just past and makes an evening sacrifice of praise to God. We then adjourn to the family-style dining room to enjoy a feast of smoked salmon, brisket, pulled pork, smoked chicken macaroni and cheese, and all the usual fixings prepared by our own Woody Berry and his wife Gigi. The seating arrangement offers a great opportunity to mingle with the seminarians and find out how these future leaders of the church are coping with the day to day situations God has laid before them. At the conclusion of the meal, Fr. Fernando thanks the Council and its members for their continued support of the group – financially, spiritually, and through their interaction with the seminarians during these special dinners. All who attended are awed by the experience and by the seminarians. (See our website www.lumenchristikc.org for additional pictures and activities with RMS).

The picture below was taken at the recent Ordination Mass at the Cathedral. Newly ordained Fr. Daniel Rendon (center, to the left of Bishop Farrell) is currently serving at Mary Immaculate in Farmers Branch. To his left are three priests, Msgr. Fernando Carranza, Rector of Seminary, Fr. Alan McDonald, Vice-Rector of the Seminary and first priest ordained from the Seminary and Fr. Eduardo Gonzalez, Spiritual Director of the Seminary. Fr. Paolo Capra and Fr. Juan Carlos Marin (first two priests from the left) are stationed at St. Elizabeth in Bonham and St. Joseph in Richardson, respectively. Fr. Luca Simbula (tall priest on the right side) is serving at St. Augustine Parish. Deacon Javier Diaz (to the right of Bishop Farrell) is serving his pastoral year at St. Ann in Coppell. There were 22 of the 27 seminarians in attendance at the ordination ceremony. Michal Markiewicz and Tymoteusz Ksiazkiewicz, were not in Dallas for the ordination as they were on itinerancy in Israel and Oregon respectively. The other three “missing” seminarians were also on itinerancy assignments in Kiribati, Guam and Michigan. Click for an interactive world map showing the seminarians at RMS Dallas and their home country.

We Stand Strong on Ethical Ground Some people believe that

ethics in business is a

contradiction in terms. They

think that in order to be

profitable, a company and its

leaders must abandon

morality and embrace the

dark, greedy side that they

see so often in the news and

in movies. At the Knights of

Columbus, we know this

isn’t true. A business can be

both ethical and successful.

We are. As a Catholic

organization, we understand

the value and importance of

our core beliefs and the

original mission of The

Venerable Father Michael J.

McGivney. In fact, much of

the strength and financial

security we provide to

members and their families

can be attributed to our

ethical, moral standards.

More than 96 percent of

Knights who buy our life

insurance keep it, year in and

year out. The Order takes

this commitment to our

members very seriously.

This means carefully

planning when it comes time

to invest. Our professional

staff researches all

transactions to insure that

they fall in line with

Catholic values. If a

transaction makes them

uncomfortable, they don’t

make it. “We exclude any

company engaged in activity

that conflicts with Catholic

moral teaching: companies

directly involved in abortion,

contraception, human

cloning, embryonic stem cell

research, for-profit health

care that pays for any of

these, or pornography,” said

Supreme Knight Carl

Anderson. “There are many

companies in the

pharmaceutical and

communications industries

that would undoubtedly

provide excellent returns for

us, but which are not in our

portfolio because they

engage in research and

development or

programming in ways that

violate the sanctity or dignity

of human life.” In the end,

the Knights of Columbus

investment strategy is

motivated by morality, not

money. Yet, each year we

remain profitable, increase

our assets and stay dedicated

to this vision that will keep

the Order financially sound

for generations to come.

From The Supreme Knight Carl Anderson

The pope is calling on us to

build a nation of neighbors

who treat each other as true

brothers and sisters. This, of

course, is not a new concept

to the Knights of Columbus.

More than a century ago, our

founder, Venerable Michael

McGivney, proposed a

vision of Catholic

brotherhood for the men of

his time. This vision not only

strengthened Catholic family

and parish life during the

19th century, but it has also

continued to offer an

attractive avenue for men to

live out their vocations.

Father McGivney

understood that the “key” to

a Catholic way of life was

precisely to see society

through the fraternal lens of

charity and unity. In other

words, the vocation of a true

Catholic “knight” is to love

his neighbor as another

brother or sister. Fraternity

has been the foundation for

what has become one of the

most sustainable and

successful business

enterprises in the Catholic

world.

Some may say that this is a

kind of idealism that cannot

compete in the real world of

business. On the contrary,

the tremendous success we

have achieved in recent

years demonstrates that our

approach is the height of

what I would describe as

Catholic realism.

Vivat Jesus
