Family of the Month

The Bob and Kathy McDermott family was

selected "Family of the Month" for August

2011. The entire family got involved with their

son Robbie as he cycled his way from

Anacortes, Washington to Bar Harbor, Maine, a

distance of more than 4000 miles, in 41 days.

The entire family was with Robbie for all or part

of his trek across the northern United States.

His trip was dedicated to those who have

Multiple Sclerosis and raised money for those

with the disease. This summer endeavor by

Robbie definitely showed what family is all

about.

Knight of the Month

Doyle Kitchen was selected "Knight of the Month" for August

2011. His work in reestablishing the "Chalice for Vocations" is just

one of the reasons for his selection. Doyle has also worked hard

at taking over the Church Program from Brother John Poston.

Besides his work in the Church Program, Doyle is a behind the

scenes guy at many of our events. He likes to be in the kitchen

doing the cleanup activities after Pancake Breakfasts and Sunday

Morning Fellowship. Doyle is also the "favorite" council spammer,

as he ensures the weekly Lumen Christi Weekly Updates get out

each week.

Grand Knight’s Message

Greetings Brothers,

The new fraternal year has just started and soon we will begin the

new church year. I hope that you are all aware that there are

changes to the liturgy that will start with Advent on Sunday

November 27, 2011. The third edition of the Roman Missal will be

implemented that weekend with the November 26, 2011 5:00 PM

anticipatory Mass. Our parish is already in the process of

planning for these changes as attested by the various articles in

the parish bulletin. You might want to look at these articles so

that things won't be totally foreign when that time comes. The

parish is going to conduct classes about the forthcoming changes

starting with the first Wednesday in October. The classes, which

go for 4 weeks, are currently scheduled at 7:00 PM in the St. Theresa room. Bishop Mark has assured me

that there is no final examination for this class! Here is an excellent opportunity to understand the

changes coming and to ask any questions that you might have.

At this time, we have three new seminarians from All Saints that are attending Holy Trinity seminary.

They are Ross Busby, Stephen Ingram, and David Sinagub. Please keep each of them in your prayers as

they discern God's will. Our seminarian intern this past summer, Albert Solis, will be returning for his

second year at Holy Trinity as well. In addition, Lumen Christi brothers Samuel Martinez, Radoslaw

"Michal" Markiewics, and Tymoteusz "Tymo" Ksiazkiewicz will be continuing their studies at Redemptoris

Mater Missionary Seminary in Dallas. Brother Sean Keating will be continuing at the Benedictine

Monastery in Pecos, New Mexico, while Martin Mwangi will

be at St. Mary's in Houston. Huy Do will be discerning

God's will for him at the Benedictine Monastery in Subiaco,

Arkansas. Please keep these men in your prayers as they

follow God's calling.

We will be getting busy with various activities of the

Knights, the diocese and the parish in the coming months.

Please take some time to see if you can help your brother

Knights at Lumen Christi. An excellent way to do this is by

attending our business meeting the third Monday of each

month. If this doesn't fit your schedule, you can visit our

website at www.lumenchristikc.org and volunteer for the

many events on our calendar. It is a fun time and you will

be helping us with many wonderful causes.

Pray for our clergy, our seminarians, all religious, and

for an increase in vocations to the religious life.

Vivat Jesus.

Community Programs

On July 14, 2011, the All Saints Vacation Bible School held its Family Pizza Night. As they have for the

past few years, they asked the Knight's to serve the Pizza and drinks. Fourteen Knights answered the

call, and served 150 to 160 guests quickly and efficiently. The following Knights worked the event: Jack

Ayers, Len Kiefel, Ed Monaghan, Larry Milliken, Ed Munno, Greg Neywick, Doyle Kitchen, Mike Zolton, Stan

Tax, Fred Fink, Steve Trax, Jeff Schneider, Bob Wise, and Larry Brennan. John Gorman's daughter, Jessi,

also helped the Knight's serve and clean up in order to earn JPII service hours.

Pro-Life

With the HEAT of summer

starting to decline (all the way

down to 100 by NEXT weekend)

it is time for the Pro-Life

activities to start heating up.

We have listed here the events that will be coming up in the next two months.

September 24th – Hike For Life. This will take place at John Paul II High School. Registration will be

between 8 and 8:30 am and will last until about 11. The “hike” takes place on the school grounds. After

the hike, refreshments will be served. Pre-registration is encouraged at www.HikeforLifeTexas.com.

Proceeds benefit the local Pro-Life organizations.

October 2nd – Life Chain. This is the event where we stand in silent protest against abortion. The Life

Chain for us will be at the intersection of Coit and Frankford. It will begin at 2pm and last until 3pm. No

registration is required – just come on out. Signs will be provided.

Forty Days for Life. This event begins on September 28 and lasts until November 6. The plan is to have a

presence in front of the SW Women’s Surgical Center 7/24 during that period. Our council has adopted

Friday, October 21 through Saturday, October 22. If you want to sign up early and get one of the choice

hours – let us know via the email address below.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!

Every Saturday after the 9 am Mass we pray

the Rosary at one of five Dallas abortion

clinics. We do this rain or shine, hot or cold,

even when it is snowing.

Council Programs

Corporate Communion

During the 5:00 Mass, Aug. 20, Council

13520 held their Corporate Communion.

Color Corps was present and a reception

followed.

Meatballs were cooked by our infamous Len

Kiefel. Also served were cheese, grapes,

crackers, beer, and wine. The evening was

highlighted by presenting Fr. Peter with a

sugar free cheesecake, with numbered

candles and meals from a local Indian

restaurant in celebration of his 60th birthday!

We Love you Fr. Peter, and Thank You for

being our Chaplain!

Thank You all who participated in the

preparations and set up……

Pro-Life Tip of the Month – September 2011

Can you be personally opposed to abortion, but still think

it should be legal?

Many people who are personally opposed to abortion –

who consider abortion to be the unjust killing of a human

being – still believe that abortion should be legal. They

say that it’s impossible to stop abortion, so we need to

keep abortion legal to reduce the risks associated with

abortion. However, history does not support this

analysis.

Between 1972 (the year before Rove v. Wade legalized

abortion throughout the United States) and 1979, the

nation’s abortion rate doubled. But, when Poland made

abortion illegal in 1993, its abortion rate plummeted.

The law is a powerful teacher, influencing people’s

attitudes towards right and wrong. We cannot assume

that if abortion were made illegal, the abortion rate

would remain steady, with similar numbers of women

seeking illegal abortions. The evidence above suggests

the contrary.

Those who wish to make abortion rate go down must seek

to make it illegal. That would not end all abortions, but it

would dramatically reduce the nations’ abortion rate.

Pancake Breakfast

My goodness, what can I say! The weeks before were filled with anticipation as we had two months off

from our last event. Naysayers were saying “we had too much on our plate(s).”

Well we pulled it off, not without glitches, mind you, but we broke an all time record once again with 214

paying customers! The encouragement of Doyle Kitchen and Al Steindorf kept the program on track and

WE ALL, including Jim and Shirley Sammons, Ed Munno, Al Steindorf, and Doyle Kitchen doing the prep on

Friday, along with our regulars on Sunday (too many to mention), accomplished our first attempt at Eggs

Benedict. The process and food flow will improve as experience is gained and suggestions are received.

Membership Corner

As we move down the paths of our lives, there are moments

that define us and become indelible parts of our memories. It

could be a wedding, the birth of a child, the passing of a loved

one, or something as simple as a sunset. These experiences

add up to become the sum of our lifetime's experience.

The goal of the Knights of Columbus is to make a difference in

the lives of our members and potential members and their

families by offering them the opportunity to be of service to

our Church and our communities.

There is a place in the Knights of Columbus for every qualified

man, whether he has a huge amount of time to volunteer or

only a couple of hours a year. Regardless of what his interests

are, the Order has something to offer him.

As we continue the celebration of our 129th anniversary under

the theme of "Membership 365,” we endeavor to expand the

vision of our founder, Father Michael J. McGivney.

His vision gave birth to an organization that today numbers

more than 1.8 million members in over 13,000 councils

throughout the world.

In 2010, for example, we donated more than $140 million

dollars and gave over 70 million volunteer hours to charitable

and Church related causes.

As a Knight in any council, each of you should be prepared to

answer the question "What is a Knight of Columbus?" We

have many brochures available to assist and you may ask any

member of the Membership team for help.

There will be several First Degree programs Lumen Christi Council may participate in during October:

Saturday, October 8, at St. Ann Church in Coppell. The candidates are requested to arrive by 9:30AM for registration and orientation. The program will begin at 10:00AM.

Wednesday, October 26, at Prince of Peace in Plano. Candidates are requested to arrive by 7:00PM and the ceremony will begin at 7:30PM

A Major Degree program will be held at Council 5052 Hall on October 23. The day will begin by candidates and observers attending Mass at 7:30AM at Mary Immaculate Church in Farmers Branch. The 2ND and 3RD Degree ceremonies will take place after Mass at Council 5052 Hall. This will be the first Major Degree program conducted in our area since the new fraternal year began in July.

You can always check the status of the Degree schedule by going to the Lumen Christi website and click on the Degree schedule tab.
