of causes out there but two spring to mind. The Tree of Joy at Greenacres food court and our community feature, the Ubomi Obutsha Centre.

Use our What’s On section to navigate your way through December’s events. But if you are looking to get your heart pumping then Adrenalin Addo, home of Africa’s longest double zip line, is guaranteed to kick start it into action.

From Me and the Bay Life team, we wish you a very merry festive season.

Yes folks, December has arrived. It brings with it last minute frantic gift shopping, bashing your way through busy malls where every shop you walk into is playing that same ole Boney M Christmas album that was first released in 1981. In a bid to remove that stress, but mostly to save your ears from that torture, we’ve showcased a handful of extremely gifted artisans and independent retailers in our support local feature.

Tis the season to give and share and if you are like me, we have everything we need anyway. Why not suggest to your loved ones to rather donate to a worthy cause on your behalf. There are loads

I am the fundraiser for the Aurora Special Care Centre, and have been here for over 2 years now. I am also a presenter on air at Algoa FM and have worked there for around 8 years now. I am very fortunate to have 2 jobs that I absolutely love, and that complement each other so well. I also do voice-over work, sell Avon and convert VHS to DVD’s... all things which I love doing.

Where is you favourite place to eat?

Being the mom of a two year old and a four year old, eating out tends to involve play areas, balloons and face-painting.

We are really enjoying the new Mikes Kitchen on the beachfront. My kids love the digital game that gets them moving! I am not sure what it is called, but images appear on the floor and it requires them to be active by participating in the different games. For example – jumping

on popcorn kernels to make them pop, stamping on cockroaches, colouring in an image by walking across it.

There is also a baby section, where they have carers, a small slide, puzzles and colouring in.

When I am not with the kids – which is rare – I really enjoy Como Café in Walmer.

What is your favourite activity when the weather is miserable?

If the weather is a bit miserable, we enjoy going to the library. Our family are all avid readers, and the boys love going there. We also enjoy the museum and in windy weather we fly kites.

What is your favourite way or favourite place to wind down after work?

We enjoy heading to the Boardwalk to watch the Light Show – the kids are always enthralled by it. We also spend a

lot of time at the beach, the kids always meet other children there and can spend hours playing in the water (to the left of the pier). I love it in the evenings, when it’s not too hot and it really is a great way for the whole family to unwind.

What is your favourite outdoor spot in Port Elizabeth?

We have several. We love going to St Georges Park, and often pack a picnic basket and spend a Sunday morning there. We also enjoy the skateboard park and bike park outside the Walmer library. There is a great playground – 8th avenue Walmer, and we picnic there too. We have quite a small garden at home, so we tend to get out quite often for the boys to play ball, ride bike and burn off energy.

What is your favourite shop?

Any bookshop! Can spend hours browsing through books. ☺

PERSONAL - LEE CHILD

This book is the 19th Jack Reacher book by Lee Child.

Alongside Jo Nesbo’s “Harry Hole“, Ian Rankin’s “Rebus” and Ludlum’s “Jason Bourne “ Jack Reacher rivals for first place as most incredible-on all accounts- in all categories- man of mystery. Such spotless characterisation and long legged roguish heroic action men are what the real page-turners are made of. Read one Jack Reacher book, or any of the other above-mentioned for that matter, and you are hooked.

It is not a Sylvia Day fix, or a James Patterson weekly, but rather something for the more seasoned reader. No, a mindless read it is not. Lee Child is very well researched and weaves an intricate plot, takes his time to set up before he lets one loose, and then, you find

your heart rate increases, adrenaline in overdrive, while you hold your breath until finally released to put the book down. And then Jack Reacher takes his time to fade away, properly just like it is, in the book.

What seems to be a botched assassination in France turns out to be the start of an investigation on a figure head during international congress of the United Nations. Someone is going to be taken out, and Reacher has been lured out of his hiding place to stop the extraordinary assassin in his tracks. But Reacher finds more than what he bargained for, a personal vendetta, a game of cat and mouse to vindicate a bad man. Together with a gorgeous young CIA side-kick, this time Jack Reacher gets Personal.

If you haven’t read a Reacher, now is a good time to start.

DIARY OF A WIMPY KID : THE LONG HAUL BY JEFF KINNEY

It has been a whole year’s wait for the 11th book in the hilarious Wimpy Kid series.

Greg Heffley aka ‘the Wimpy Kid’ takes a road trip with his dysfunctional family that takes several wrong turns before it turns into an adventure.

If you are not familiar with the Heffley’s, it is a family not unlike the one you are in.

A dilly and dishevelled mother who, in a desperate last attempt, whilst frantically trying to raise three kids in a world gone mad, grasps at anything that will give a sense of purpose to her life, champions the ideal of a picture perfect family, and ultimately, commandeers the disastrous road trip on a whim, taking her inspiration from a mail-order magazine

called Family Frolic. There is dad, whose accommodating nature is counter-balanced with mixed outbursts of passion and frustration. Tread lightly around the super awkward Rodrick, Wimpy Kid’s older brother, always at the ready to torture, exclude and ridicule his siblings. The baby in the family, Manny, cute and inappropriate, innocently often finds himself as the catalyst to calamity. This brings us to the young neurotic narrator, Mr Greg Heffley, his nerdy existence always on the brink of shambles which he deftly manages by keeping a diary, complete with illustrations.

The Long Haul takes us on a hilarious ride where Flat Stanley goes out the window, (literally), to quaint but cheap motels, freaky fairs and a runaway piglet. What a joke. What a journey.

A quality read for mostly boys, but also girls, and grown-ups too!

Having tried out quite a few (but not all) of the coffee shops and cafés in PE over the last few years, these places listed below have become firm favourites of ours.

These are based on personal choice, as I know there are many good places out there, but we seem to be drawn back to these time and again.

In no particular order they are:

Dessies – Bloomingdales Centre, Walmer – Tel: 041 581 3113

Dessies is located at the Bloomingdales nursery and when sitting outside on a sunny day the setting is incredibly relaxing and tranquil. Serving the most delicious light meals and breakfasts, you are sure to encounter equally good coffee and other awesome baked treats.

Deli on Main – 9th Ave Shopping Centre, Walmer – Tel: 041 581 7316

Also located on Main road in Walmer, Deli on Main has a personal charm which is also apparent in the dishes they serve. Light meals, a great burger and now offering pizza – definitely worth a visit.

Posh The Eatery – 32 Stanley Street, Richmond Hill – Tel: 041 582 5005

The Stanley street area and other parts of Richmond Hill have blossomed into a food lover’s haven and this is where you will find Posh. An elegant café, very friendly waitrons and a great menu is what awaits you. Soaking up the laid back atmosphere whilst nourishing your soul with one of their delicious meals is definitely something for your to-do list.

Rhubarb & Lime – 7 Park Lane, Mill Park – Tel: 041 373 3186

Park Lane in Mill Park may be renowned for Natti’s Thai kitchen but right next door is another favourite breakfast haunt of ours, Rhubarb & Lime. They serve a brilliant omelette and really good cappuccinos with a modern feel and some interesting décor.

Cobblestone Bakery – 40 6th Avenue, Walmer – Tel: 041 581 0182

Great meals, exceptional baked goods and a firm favourite in PE, sums up Cobblestone. Fresh ciabatta, panini, homemade pies and their famous magic bar are all signature items on offer.

Something interesting to note, all of the above eateries are owner managed and this is one reason why I continue to support such establishments. The passion, dedication and commitment to serving you only the best, is what makes your experience exceptional.

Brioche – 181 Main road, Walmer – Tel: 041 581 2136

Brioche is an artisan bakery in what seems to be a renovated house in Walmer. Charming and quaint, their food is served with lots of love and care.

Lorette Knowles-Taylor wins Nissan World Cup Qualifier 2014PORT ELIZABETH – Lorette Knowles-Taylor and Nissan Nabab Forever claimed top honours in the tightly-contested final leg of the 2014 Nissan World Cup Qualifier in Port Elizabeth on the 16th November.

Knowles-Taylor said she was “ecstatic” with her victory and especially her

“legend horse” Nissan Nabab Forever, a 19-year-old who was retired two years ago and topped a stunning comeback this year with today’s win.

They were followed by Dominey Alexander on Discovery Enjoy 68 and Nicola Sime-Riley riding Sunny Park Stables El Paso.

More than 180 horses and riders made up a capacity field to deliver four days of show-jumping thrills with very few spills, show director and organizer Tanja Radke said.

Show-jumping veteran Nicole Horwood, riding Mark White Nissan Capital Don Cumarco, was crowned the overall winner of the 2014 FEI* World Cup

Qualifier series, jumping her way into the FEI* World Cup final to be held in Las Vegas, USA, in 2015.

“I am absolutely thrilled,” said Horwood of her win. “We were set a testing course today consistent with the standard we expect in this series. Mark White Nissan Capital Don Cumarco is so consistent, always gives me 100 per cent, and we’ve had a really successful year as a result. The PE Riding Club ground is absolutely super, they’ve done a fantastic job,” she said.

The Eastern Cape had its share of winners, with Grahamstown rider Carey Pohl placing fourth in the Nissan World Cup Qualifier, and Robyn Gerber, also of

Grahamstown, clearing 1.75m to win the Nissan 6 Bar Challenge and R15 000 in prize money.

The Nissan 6 Bar Challenge had spectators on the edge of their seats as riders battled it out to clear the highest jump over five rounds in which the jumps are raised after each round. The current record is a 2.0m jump, set by Knowles-Taylor and Nissan Nabab Forever in June 2014.

Proceeds from the event were donated by Nissan to the East Cape Horse Care Unit, which looks out for the welfare of working horses.

Radke said the international-standard course by leading South African course

designer Kevin Spratley had challenged the capacity field of top competitors over the four days of competition in adverse weather conditions.

“This is a premier international event on the local equestrian calendar, and we are proud that Nelson Mandela Bay and our team of volunteers from the PE Riding Club hosted a seamless event enjoyed by the competitors and thousands of spectators over the past four days. The commitment of Nissan as our partner made it possible for us to bring world-class riding to the Bay,” Radke said.

Nissan SA Managing Director Mike Whitfield said the event proved yet again

Nelson Mandela Bay’s capacity to host international sporting events.

“We’re proud to associate Nissan with this event as horse-riding is a sport that reflects our brand ethos of excitement, innovation and excellence,” Whitfield said.

THE BAY LIFE COMMUNITY

Serving a community in excess of 25 000 people across the Kwazakhele, Zwide and Soweto On Sea townships of Port Elizabeth, the Ubomi Obutsha Centre addresses the needs of orphaned and vulnerable children (OVC’s) negatively affected by a poor living environment, poor education levels, debilitating and life-threatening diseases, neglect of healthy childhood development, abandonment and abuse

in many forms.

At the Ubomi Obutsha Centre we work to combine volunteered time, donated resources and developmental activities to affect a meaningful impact in the lives of children who live in circumstances that deprive them of care, opportunities and resources that would enable them to realise their potential and grow into self-supporting and contributing

members of our society.

Activities to address these issues are organised into three main programme groupings.

High Risk OVC Interventions involve home support visits, meeting basic needs, toddler educare, school support and referrals & follow ups.

Life Skills Programmes include teaching values, relational life skills, conflict solving, self-awareness, positive social behaviour, relationships, setting goals and responsibility.

The Open Community Programmes are Sunday school, soup kitchen, homework & tutoring and holiday clubs.

Other activities include crisis needs interventions where practical disaster relief is given during flooding, shack fires, etc

Through these activities the Ubomi Obutsha Centre directly impacts the lives of approximately 900 OVC’s each month and reaching over 2000 OVC’s in an average year .

Passports & Visas – silly season

THE BAY LIFE TRAVEL & TOURISM

Here we go – it is nearing the time of year in the Travel industry which is really more silly season than festive season. This is the time of last minute holiday bookings – trying to find seats, trying to find good package deals and most of all, trying to get Visas for the last minute bookings.

I have once again discovered in the last few weeks that not everyone makes sure that their passport is valid or if they have enough blank pages in them, especially if you are a dual passport holder.

When it comes to travelling abroad and you have dual citizenship, it is important to make sure that BOTH your passports are in order and still valid. The general rule is that the passport must have at LEAST 6 months validity on it AFTER your return from your destination – but preferably a lot longer than this. The important thing to remember is that you cannot exit and then re-enter SA on your foreign passport (unless you have

SA residency sticker in that particular passport) Otherwise you are seen as a Foreign visitor to South Africa and will only be granted a certain amount of days on a visitor visa which just causes major confusion and frustration at the Customs counters.

As Home Affairs is no longer issuing Temporary Passports at all, it is really imperative that you make sure you give yourself at least 1-2 months time to obtain a new SA passport, especially now as everything is much slower in getting processed this time of the year.

Another important thing to keep in mind is that Visas for certain countries during this time take much longer than normal due to the amounts of applications that these Consulates have to deal with. Mostly it takes an extra week or two, so this is good to keep in mind for any future trips in December. Some consulates do not always require air tickets, only itineraries, which means

that they are under no obligation to issue a Visa in time for your planned trip. (They usually recommend no tickets are issued until visas are obtained) In my own experience, I have found that they are quite accommodating and normally visas will be issued in time, but this is not a given. So basic rule is – book, plan and prepare as far in advance as your circumstances will allow. It will not only save you lots of stress, but unnecessary expenses too when it comes to changing dates on air tickets already bought.

But all in all, things always seem to work out and while we all have a few last things to tie up before we say goodbye to 2014, may it be a wonderful time for everyone taking a break. May 2015 be an excellent year for all travellers and their families!

A little about Rose CowparThis fair dinkum Aussie never imagined herself moving halfway around the world and ending up in beautiful South Africa, yet here I am and loving every minute.

When I was asked to join the G&S Committee I was very flattered and agreed, not ever thinking that within 4 years I would be the very proud President of what I believe is the best amateur company I’ve ever had the privilege to be a part of. My hubby thinks it’s nice that I enjoy my

hobby and I don’t have the heart to tell him that my “real” job as Business Manager of our family pubs, Captain’s Beachfront and Central is more like the hobby – theatre is definitely in my blood thanks to a Dad that shared with me his passion for all things musical!

I host lots of parties for the theatre crowd and the first question everyone asks is “will there be pav?” I think there’d be a mutiny if I didn’t make it so here’s the recipe, just don’t let on how easy it is!

editor’s note: bio has been shortened

This recipe will make one large pavlova for about 6 people or 6 smaller individual pavs.

Oven temperature: 100 – 110CCooking time: 1.45 – 2 hours

INGREDIENTS :

• 3 Egg Whites• ¾ cup Castor Sugar• ½ teaspoon Cornflour• ½ teaspoon Vanilla Essence• ½ teaspoon Vinegar (brown or white

is fine – I use brown as it’s easier to see that it’s all mixed in)

FILLING :

• 1 cup Cream

• Fruit of your choice – I use Strawberries, Blueberries, Kiwifruit, Banana and Grenadilla

METHOD:

Preheat your oven and prepare your baking tray. Cover the tray with foil and either give a liberal coating of Spray and Cook or, even better, grease with Tin Glide available from any baking shop and nothing will stick! Draw a shape onto your tin, either a circle, square or oblong – I usually do a long narrow

pav when multiplying the mix for large groups – then everyone gets some crispy side pieces and the delicious chewy centre.

Beat the egg whites on high until they form stiff peaks. Add the sugar a spoonful at a time and beat well to dissolve each spoonful. Mix in the cornflour into the last spoonful and beat in. If the sugar is not properly mixed in you will get a syrup seeping out around the edges of your pavlova during cooking.

Gently but thoroughly fold in the vanilla essence and vinegar with a spatula making sure not to overwork the meringue.

Working quickly, spread your mixture onto the pan. You can shape it like a cake, a dome or a pie shell shape as preferred. The dome can be hollowed out to put the filling in and the pie shape, my preferred, also holds filling well.

Place in a cool oven for 1½ - 2 hours until the outside has formed a shell that sounds almost hollow when you tap it gently. It will continue to cook a little after you turn off the oven so don’t let it get too dry. Open the oven door to cool it down completely before you try and

remove from the foil.

Serve by filling with whipped cream and decorating with fruit. I usually cut the strawberries into quarters, slice the banana thinly and cut the kiwifruit into quarters lengthwise then slice. Top it off with granadilla. You can add a little icing sugar and vanilla to the cream if you want but I never do.

TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT!

• You can multiply this mixture up to 18 egg whites without any problems although if making large quantities it is easier to mix 6 eggs at a time to get the right stiffness in the mix.

• Pipe different shapes onto your baking sheet, eg a heart or diamond.

• Make round flat shapes which you can layer and fill with any type of mousse, fridge cheesecake mixture, chocolate or marscarpone plus your cream and fruit.

• Add food colouring – I made a Barbie princess with a doll in the centre surrounded by pink circles for the skirt, filled with fruit and strawberry mousse.

I retired in 2013 after 43 years’ service in the work environment and opened my Etsy shop the next day

At present my focus is mainly on one-of-a-kind handmade bags. These include tote bags, rucksacks, shoulder bags, duffel bags, travel bag and many more. I have so many ideas of what I want to make that I have a hard time deciding what to do next and am always looking for bright new ideas.

Other than making handmade bags, I also have many regular local customers who make use of my dressmaking services. I can also personalize items and only use the very best embroidery and silk screening services.

I set up my studio at home in 2012 at first just for fun as a hobby. Friends started wanting to buy from me and in 2013 I was asked if I wanted to participate in the Back To Earth Organic Market once a month. My aim is to make pretty, functional items that have a mix and matchy feel and look just handmade enough not to have a mass produced appearance. I never expect them to look absolutely perfect, in fact I don’t want them to. I believe that there is beauty in imperfection. Every item is oven and dishwasher safe.At the moment I’m selling off my Facebook page, at markets and from my studio.

Studio visits by appointment onlyLittle Sparrow Ceramics will be at the market at Father’s House church on the 16th of Dec and at the Walmer Town Hall on the 20th Dec.

The buildings I paint reflect an attitude rather than an image, abandonment and despair, but with reference to hope albeit only in our minds-eye. The starkness of the building in a desolate background will serve as an intense focus on the story behind the lives that drifted through these buildings and not so much as the building itself. Although the buildings are devoid of life the observer is left to draw their own conclusions as to the many stories that the image may evoke in them.

The images may have been born out of my intense appreciation of Surrealism, but the simple approach adopted by artist such as Edward Hopper is a constant driving force in my work.

If you are looking to get your heart pumping then Adrenalin Addo, home of Africa’s longest double zip line, is guaranteed to kick start it into action.

Make a day out of it though. Pack a picnic, pile the kids and gran in the car as it has something to offer everyone. The kids will be thrilled with their very own mini zip line and jungle gym in the play area. For those seeking a more tranquil experience, hire a canoe and drift down the Sunday’s River, taking in the scenery and abundant bird life.

The giant swing is the perfect way to prepare yourself for a bungee jump as it mimics that same feeling you get in

your stomach when you are released from 18m up in the air and drop to the ground, only to swing back and forth like a pendulum.

But the main attraction is the double zip line.

The nervous laughter and chatter during the 10 minute hike to the starting platform is soon silenced as you gaze down the 500m long steel cable. The build-up of nerves added to the breathtaking views over the citrus orchards from the platform 60m above the valley, definitely make this an exhilarating ride to remember. For those of you who are wondering how you stop

after zipping through the air at speeds up to 60km per hour, don’t stress, as your zip line comes with its very own state of the art braking system.

Adrenalin Addo is the perfect setting for families, corporate groups and school outings.

Bookings essential.
