Tuition is up and student enrollment is down at Muskegon Community College this fall But the news isnrsquot all bad says MCCrsquos top administrator Despite a 27 decline MCCrsquos fall enrollment is still the 2nd highest in the schoolrsquos history said President Dale Nesbary The number of student credit hours is also down 61 percent ndash meaning that students are also taking fewer classes Nesbary said there are several likely reasons for MCCrsquos enrollment drop MCC board of trustees earlier this year approved a 58 percent tuition hike for students this fall the college has also been hurt by the elimination of federal aid for displaced workers who can no longer afford college The problems have forced MCC to look at other resources to help financially-strapped students he said ldquoWe added programs to help the students with expensesrdquo said Nesbary ldquoThat way the number of enrolled students

would remain high or eventually increaserdquo According to the Michigan Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers Community College Weekly Enrollment Report a total of 27 community colleges have reported a student enrollment decrease this fall Those schools have included Grand Rapids (178 percent) Westshore (185) Jackson (127) Kellogg (104) Delta (27) Macomb (22) Montcalm (21) and Oakland (59) ldquoThe economy plays a part in the decreaserdquo said Nesbary ldquoThe more the economy improves the fewer students feel the need to get an education ldquoThere is a direct relationship between education level and income People not knowing this will cause them to drop out of school and lower the collegersquos head countrdquo Many MCC students have elected to continue their schooling because a degree will increase their chances for long-term financial stability ldquoI gave up my job to continue with schoolrdquo student Seanice Johnson ldquoI was losing sleep and I did not have time to study I was getting Arsquos and Brsquos but when I started working my grades dropped I was not going to give up my education for a jobrdquo

Muskegon Community College which has earned many accolades since becoming the arearsquos first college 85 years ago added the prestigious title of ldquoworld record holderrdquo this week The National Electric Drag Racing Association (NEDRA) officially informed the College on Thursday that its dragster ldquoShort Circuitrdquo built and operated by MCC students and faculty established the 48-volt world mark of 4847 mph over a quarter-mile on Saturday at the US-131 MotorSports Park in Martin Mich North Muskegonrsquos Ryan Lubbers an MCC student and the Motor Sports Club president was behind the wheel but achieving the global standard belongs to hundreds at the College according to Al Thomas the MCC Automotive Technology faculty member who has guided the Short Circuit project since its inception in 2008 ldquoThere have been four years of many many people working on thisrdquo he explained ldquoWhile my Hybrid and Alternative Fuels class was the main group in designing and building this car doing the research and development and putting together the components that other classes could not they were not alone Hundreds of students have been involved not only in automotive technology but in welding machining CAD electrical graphics and throughout our entire Technology Department wing Automotive Technology instructor Allen Thomas fourth from the left poses with his students and the world record-setting Short Circuit electric dragster at US-131 MotorSports Park in Martin Mich Pictured left to right are Ryan Lubbers Lucas Mayhugh John Broadbent Thomas Pete Studeman Adam Green Eric Wilson and Jedidiah Kuepfer ldquoWhat happens here typically is we build the cars in classes where the work is applicable If wersquore working on steering then we do that in alignment and suspensionrdquo Thomas singled out the dedication and contributions of Dave McCloud an MCC student and retired engineer whose

involvement dates to being part of the very first class that ldquodesigned and hatched the ideardquo Owning a world record has only whetted the competitive zeal of Thomas and his students ldquoI did this so my student could see successrdquo he noted ldquoThe means arenrsquot as important as the achievement We did our homework and shot for a couple of records that we could legitimately achieve the eighth-mile and quarter-mile The eighth-mile which we didnrsquot get was set back in 2003 The quarter-mile was wide open No one owned it Back then it wasnrsquot technologically feasible to go that distance ldquoShort Circuit is a constant work in process Wersquore learning every time we take it out Quite honestly wersquore trying to figure out what happened on Saturday because it didnrsquot go as fast as we thought it should Our calculations said we should have gone 93 miles per hour based on our previous testing with an accelerometerrdquo Thomas explained that the racing season is rapidly coming to a close so the MCC crew may have to wait until next spring for a crack at a new record Like those who went before them the current crop of MCC students will use the winter months to tweak the vehicle for its next outing For his part Thomas says he must seek alternative sources of funding if MCC hopes to eclipse the eighth-mile world record ldquoWe would need to add some technological expertise and funding somewhere between $7000-10000 for a battery pack and the same amount for a pair of new motorsrdquo he explained Whether or not a new record is on the horizon Thomas says his MCC students are interested in acquiring the skills associated with the emerging alternative fuel field ldquoI think the opportunity exists for employment in the field beyond these classesrdquo he explained ldquoA lot of our students are interested in making a vocation and a future out of battery or electric car opportunities I started the Hybrid and Alternative Fuels class four or five years ago Itrsquos popular Itrsquos been full every time wersquove offered it ldquoWhat has happened is wersquove ridden numerous waves of popularity for electric power over the years Therersquos been some push then a decline Wersquove watched this over and over Itrsquos been a cycle I think we have the most momentum wersquove ever

had right now in part because of the federal governmentrsquos push to reduce our dependence on foreign oil and the fact that we are now producing huge amount of ethanolrdquo

On October 19 the Coalition for a Drug Free Muskegon County and Muskegon Alcohol Liability Initiative (ALI) were on

the MCC campus to promote safe driving habits In order to give students a feeling for how hard it is to drive while impaired there was a computerized Drunk Driving Simulator set up in the Student Union A student could head outside to the main parking lot where they had the GEM car available to test drive They had a small course set up with orange safety cones that you had to drive around This would not be much of a challenge except for the fact that they had the students wear special goggles on their head which blurred their vision Needless to say there were a few orange cones that took quite a beating that day Even though the day was overcast it still was fun for anyone who got an opportunity to drive the car There was talk of possibly doing this again in the spring for those who were unable to attend this event

If you are attending college and have student loans maybe unemployed without health insurance or on the verge of losing your home then yoursquore just like 99 of all Americans The wealthiest are the 1 of Americans and they have the most political influence The time has come to admit that the system we follow has a problem Occupy Wall Street (OWS) is a people empowered movement for democracy that began on September 17th with an encampment in the financial district of New York City There are many smaller public outcroppings coming forth throughout the US and now throughout the world The one purpose and goal in mind is to show solidarity for the people who occupy Wall Street The world is now listening There are a wide variety of complaints and goals from the Wall Street protesters The environment labor standards housing policy government corruption World Bank lending practices unemployment and increasing wealth disparity Many people have been affected by many aspects of the same system and are symptoms from the same problem Whether we agree or not is not the problem We all know that there are investment bankers getting rich on Wall Street while things for the rest of us are getting tougher This movement is not about a victory but rather a movement of sustainability Muskegon now has it chance to show solidarity Occupy Muskegon was first presented on October 15th in Hackley Park and has been a presence ever since Facilitators from West Michigan have made their way to New York to the Occupy Wall Street demonstrations and have came back to help facilitate and educate others of the main objectives in OWS There is no single person in charge it is strictly a horizontal organization something our current system shows no knowledge

of A horizontal organization is a type of social organization which implies equality for everyone participating in a group or society There is no hierarchy and it is the opposite of a vertical organization in which some people make decisions and others obey them This method is used to take decisions through general assemblies Occupy Muskegon (OM) began its occupation at 557 W Clay a private residence owned by former Muskegon City Commissioner Scott Sieradzki As this is being typed the site has been moved a half block down to a new site located on 6th and Clay Ave with regards to the seniors living in the area Daily general assemblies are held at 600 pm at the 6th and Clay Ave campsite Saturday and Sunday rallies will be at 1200 pm at Hackley Park Friday October 21st started the first designated march between noon and 300 pm called ldquoOperation Cash Backrdquo at the Bank of America on Henry Street What they wish to accomplish is that anyone with money in any Bank of America withdraw it or transfer it to a credit union or smaller bank Show solidarity and be a part of the movement for the 99 of Americans This is a US wide event As you may know Bank of America has made the decision to charge $5 monthly fees for debit card users It has been met with consumer backlash calls for boycotts and the start of a migration away from the big bank to smaller banks and credit unions There will be ongoing protests

every Friday at the same times but different locations will be discussed at general assembly meetings Anyone interested should attend Also everyone is welcome to join the occupation at the Clay Ave site as long as they are respectful of the neighbors For more information on assemblies general meetings and information please follow them on Facebook by searching for Occupy Muskegon They are currently working on a domain and a website will be up very soon If anyone would like to volunteer at OM they are in need of people to help

KENNETHBRYANT

setup share ideas and help organize the OM assemblies Also OM is in need of donations Donations should include coffee hot cocoa rain ponchos and cold weather gear They are living in tents Food donations are also being accepted Another great website to gather information and become educated in group dynamics of the peoplersquos assemblies is httptakethesquarenet Now is the time to have your voice be heard Become involved and stay informed

Information Commons Misbehavior

The Information Commons lab at MCC is a place where students go to get assignments done Of course there are those who need to get their games played and unwind from classroom stress There are rules to be followed no eating no talking on cell phones no open drinks and talking is to be done quietly if it is academic related Students know this yet the immature ones see how far they can go with breaking them From infancy one has pushed the limits to see what they could get away with But this is college and that kind of behavior needs to be left out of this setting

Most people who are subject to those who choose to break the rules do not report it for their own reasons But when given a survey regarding this subject they gladly gave their opinion When asked ldquoWhen those who are breaking the rules andor being disruptive do you think that the innocent student should be the one who goes to the adjoining quiet room (like they are the ones being punished)rdquo ndash Fourteen out of fifteen students surveyed wrote ldquoNordquo When asked ldquoInstead of the ones who are obeying the rules do you think that the ones breaking the rules or being disruptive be the ones sent to the quiet room After all shouldnrsquot the ones breaking the rules be the ones made to use the old computer equipment and not the ones obeying ndash Many said lsquoyesrsquo and some even said they should be lsquomade to leaversquo One person said that they ldquoshould be grouped upon majorityrdquo That is clearly one person who thinks rules are meant to be broken When asked ldquoRules have been

put in place for everyone to be able to take advantage of the computer lab When rules are broken do you feel that steps should be taken to make sure these people are not repeat offendersrdquo ndash All fifteen students agreed Many students added that there should be a step process If there is not one in place there should be and it should be enforced Why do some students make those in charge go to a level that is meant for grade-school Those who break the rules will always be around But if those in charge ldquoenforcerdquo the rules there will fewer incidents that occur

Last Wednesday night on the stage of the Frauenthal Theatre Muskegon was graced by the presence of one of Americarsquos greatest literary minds After an amusing and poetic introduction by MCCrsquos Mary Tyler David Sedaris appeared reading not from his latest publication Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk (a series of stories he professed at the reading which uses animals as characters as a method of fending off potential litigation when writing about people that may not appreciate what he has to say about them) but from older works which bore not only the kind of observational humor he is best known for but also a nostalgia for the antics of his

childhood that was rather bittersweet at times Though the highlight of the evening by far was when Mr Sedaris read from his own diaries everything from the kind of people encountered in line at hotel coffee bars to bon mots gleaned from radio programs to dirty jokes shared by readers at various signings was subject to scrutiny in his thin slightly drawling voice which complimented perfectly the kind of off-the-cuff wit that evidently effortlessly comes to him By the end of the evening the audience was in tears from laughter Though to simply call him Americarsquos preeminent humoristmdashwhile it is truemdashis to undermine his personal presence When off stage Mr Sedaris seated at a modest folding table in the theatrersquos lobby signing books was not only unpretentious (a rather great feat of the ego for someone who has had all eight of their books on the New York Times Bestseller List) but exuded a certain indefinable warmth taking the time to speak to each of his readers asking questions about their lives and sharing stories of his own before signing their

The Three Musketeers An Agonizing Failure

The time is the 17th century the place is France and the Cardinal seeks to relinquish power from the King ndash what havoc is to follow That havoc is the black mark that is left on the cinemarsquos reputation Itrsquos getting clicheacute to say that a movie is clicheacute but this one is Itrsquos come to a point where ldquomindless action movierdquo has become its own genre and although it felt like it was going to be really unique early on that creativity turned out not to be anything special The movies main protagonist would have to be DrsquoArtagnan the young adventurer that leaves his home to join the Musketeers on their quest for glory adventure and the service of France DrsquoArtagnan ends up making all the wrong decisions and as soon as he leaves his home village he gets shot After arriving in Paris and fighting alongside the Musketeers he befriends

STEPHENFOLTYNEWICZ

them and joins their ldquocliquerdquo Soon after this he meets a girl and spends the rest of the movie trying to gain her favor - the Musketeers just go along for the ride Later it is found that the Cardinal is trying to take control of France by starting a war with England and itrsquos the Musketeers and drsquoArtagnanrsquos job to save their country (and win the girls heart at the same time) Outrageous adventure is soon to ensue When it comes to swashbuckling action unnecessary fight scenes and an overwhelming sense of awesomeness then this movie undoubtedly gets an A I mean come on there was a blimp fight On the other hand if a complex original or excessively creative storyline is what you seek then look elsewhere They tried to keep the movie at a constant apex whenever action was involved and so nothing was special At no point in the movie did I gasp or feel a manifestation of apprehension The costumes acting and animation were unquestionably great but without at least a morsel of originality or suspense it just seemed to drudge on and on and on I caught myself yawning through the ldquoclimacticrdquo fight scene I just couldnrsquot get into it at all The character development was shallow

on even the most important characters Athos Porthos and Aramis aka the Three Musketeers At first it looked a lot like Pirates of the Caribbean but it turned out to not be in same league An OK movie but Irsquod suggest waiting until it comes out on DVD

ArtPrizersquos Efforts a Disappointment

BIANCABOVA

We were there We voted We read article after article in the aftermath of the top ten And we the public after casting our votes were outraged by the results as we watched them unfold on the stage and on our televisions What does this say about us as a city As a society And what moreover does it say about Artprizersquos future Wersquove heard it all that any discussion is good discussion that Artprize has met an early demise that next year the real artists will come back to prove themselves the venues more selective and voters more diligent that Artprize will rise to the occasion and Grand Rapids will claim a place as a new world art center Radical in its inception and disappointing in its execution Artprize now faces an uncertain future which raises questions of form and content but also that of the most base argument in all of art history What constitutes art What makes art good or real or important While Artprize has attempted to engage all of these questions as is the case with such infinite endeavors it may have sacrificed itself to find the answers

Most people who are subject to those who choose to break the rules do not report it for their own reasons But when given a survey regarding this subject they gladly gave their opinion When asked ldquoWhen those who are breaking the rules andor being disruptive do you think that the innocent student should be the one who goes to the adjoining quiet room (like they are the ones being punished)rdquo ndash Fourteen out of fifteen students surveyed wrote ldquoNordquo When asked ldquoInstead of the ones who are obeying the rules do you think that the ones breaking the rules or being disruptive be the ones sent to the quiet room After all shouldnrsquot the ones breaking the rules be the ones made to use the old computer equipment and not the ones obeying ndash Many said lsquoyesrsquo and some even said they should be lsquomade to leaversquo One person said that they ldquoshould be grouped upon majorityrdquo That is clearly one person who thinks rules are meant to be broken When asked ldquoRules have been

put in place for everyone to be able to take advantage of the computer lab When rules are broken do you feel that steps should be taken to make sure these people are not repeat offendersrdquo ndash All fifteen students agreed Many students added that there should be a step process If there is not one in place there should be and it should be enforced Why do some students make those in charge go to a level that is meant for grade-school Those who break the rules will always be around But if those in charge ldquoenforcerdquo the rules there will fewer incidents that occur

childhood that was rather bittersweet at times Though the highlight of the evening by far was when Mr Sedaris read from his own diaries everything from the kind of people encountered in line at hotel coffee bars to bon mots gleaned from radio programs to dirty jokes shared by readers at various signings was subject to scrutiny in his thin slightly drawling voice which complimented perfectly the kind of off-the-cuff wit that evidently effortlessly comes to him By the end of the evening the audience was in tears from laughter Though to simply call him Americarsquos preeminent humoristmdashwhile it is truemdashis to undermine his personal presence When off stage Mr Sedaris seated at a modest folding table in the theatrersquos lobby signing books was not only unpretentious (a rather great feat of the ego for someone who has had all eight of their books on the New York Times Bestseller List) but exuded a certain indefinable warmth taking the time to speak to each of his readers asking questions about their lives and sharing stories of his own before signing their

them and joins their ldquocliquerdquo Soon after this he meets a girl and spends the rest of the movie trying to gain her favor - the Musketeers just go along for the ride Later it is found that the Cardinal is trying to take control of France by starting a war with England and itrsquos the Musketeers and drsquoArtagnanrsquos job to save their country (and win the girls heart at the same time) Outrageous adventure is soon to ensue When it comes to swashbuckling action unnecessary fight scenes and an overwhelming sense of awesomeness then this movie undoubtedly gets an A I mean come on there was a blimp fight On the other hand if a complex original or excessively creative storyline is what you seek then look elsewhere They tried to keep the movie at a constant apex whenever action was involved and so nothing was special At no point in the movie did I gasp or feel a manifestation of apprehension The costumes acting and animation were unquestionably great but without at least a morsel of originality or suspense it just seemed to drudge on and on and on I caught myself yawning through the ldquoclimacticrdquo fight scene I just couldnrsquot get into it at all The character development was shallow

on even the most important characters Athos Porthos and Aramis aka the Three Musketeers At first it looked a lot like Pirates of the Caribbean but it turned out to not be in same league An OK movie but Irsquod suggest waiting until it comes out on DVD

If you are attending college and have student loans maybe unemployed without health insurance or on the verge of losing your home then yoursquore just like 99 of all Americans The wealthiest are the 1 of Americans and they have the most political influence The time has come to admit that the system we follow has a problem Occupy Wall Street (OWS) is a people empowered movement for democracy that began on September 17th with an encampment in the financial district of New York City There are many smaller public outcroppings coming forth throughout the US and now throughout the world The one purpose and goal in mind is to show solidarity for the people who occupy Wall Street The world is now listening There are a wide variety of complaints and goals from the Wall Street protesters The environment labor standards housing policy government corruption World Bank lending practices unemployment and increasing wealth disparity Many people have been affected by many aspects of the same system and are symptoms from the same problem Whether we agree or not is not the problem We all know that there are investment bankers getting rich on Wall Street while things for the rest of us are getting tougher This movement is not about a victory but rather a movement of sustainability Muskegon now has it chance to show solidarity Occupy Muskegon was first presented on October 15th in Hackley Park and has been a presence ever since Facilitators from West Michigan have made their way to New York to the Occupy Wall Street demonstrations and have came back to help facilitate and educate others of the main objectives in OWS There is no single person in charge it is strictly a horizontal organization something our current system shows no knowledge

of A horizontal organization is a type of social organization which implies equality for everyone participating in a group or society There is no hierarchy and it is the opposite of a vertical organization in which some people make decisions and others obey them This method is used to take decisions through general assemblies Occupy Muskegon (OM) began its occupation at 557 W Clay a private residence owned by former Muskegon City Commissioner Scott Sieradzki As this is being typed the site has been moved a half block down to a new site located on 6th and Clay Ave with regards to the seniors living in the area Daily general assemblies are held at 600 pm at the 6th and Clay Ave campsite Saturday and Sunday rallies will be at 1200 pm at Hackley Park Friday October 21st started the first designated march between noon and 300 pm called ldquoOperation Cash Backrdquo at the Bank of America on Henry Street What they wish to accomplish is that anyone with money in any Bank of America withdraw it or transfer it to a credit union or smaller bank Show solidarity and be a part of the movement for the 99 of Americans This is a US wide event As you may know Bank of America has made the decision to charge $5 monthly fees for debit card users It has been met with consumer backlash calls for boycotts and the start of a migration away from the big bank to smaller banks and credit unions There will be ongoing protests

every Friday at the same times but different locations will be discussed at general assembly meetings Anyone interested should attend Also everyone is welcome to join the occupation at the Clay Ave site as long as they are respectful of the neighbors For more information on assemblies general meetings and information please follow them on Facebook by searching for Occupy Muskegon They are currently working on a domain and a website will be up very soon If anyone would like to volunteer at OM they are in need of people to help

setup share ideas and help organize the OM assemblies Also OM is in need of donations Donations should include coffee hot cocoa rain ponchos and cold weather gear They are living in tents Food donations are also being accepted Another great website to gather information and become educated in group dynamics of the peoplersquos assemblies is httptakethesquarenet Now is the time to have your voice be heard Become involved and stay informed
