Historical Notes

The battle was fought over the contestedsuccession of the English throne. Edwardthe Confessor, never produced a son thatwould continue his family line, so inJanuary 5, 1066 Edward recognized HaroldII Godwinson, his wife brother and theEarl of Wessex as king. Prior to January5, it was claimed that Harold II made adiplomatic meeting with William swearinghis allegiance to the Norman Duke and hiswillingness to aid William in aquiring theEnglish throne after Edward died. Breakinghis oath to William, Harold takes the throneof England and thereby provokes William'sconquest. During this battle Harold is hit inthe eye with and arrow and is slain. Theremaining English retreat from theBattlefield giving the Normans Victory.
